I do. I've been working on and off on a RPGMaker game for a couple of years now. The thing with this engine is that you need either an interesting story or a captivating overall character and environment design, since the gameplay will be run-of-the-mill for sure, unless you're able to code many things for yourself, and if you're someone who can do that then rpgmaker is probably not the engine you want to use, it will get in your way too much. That said I managed to do several minigames using only events and some clever thinking. It's easy enough to learn and it offers a lot more possibilities than people usually take it for. I have a lot of fun doing sprites and coming up with funny and depressing dialogue for my little game. I hope I'll finish it one day. Here's a small room I recently finished.

looks cool, anon

is that yours? It looks really nice. Is everything in that pic from rpgmaker or did you draw some of the stuff yourself?

Thanks!

Yeah I draw and animate everything on aseprite, it's actually the only thing I have going for this game, since the story is not at all original (you go through several worlds looking for your missing sister), the music I'll probably have to do simple loop tunes cause I can't compose if my life depended on it and gameplay is mostly exploration and gameboy style minigames (like memorizing the path for a bridge that disappears after a few seconds and you have to go across anyway).

It takes a long time to draw everything so I reuse whatever I can. For example you can see the plant in the bedroom is the same from this other place.

rpg maker was when I realized I am a programmer and not a game designer, I realized if I want to make a game I need to team up with a game designer that could use my programming skills, but I'm a loner so that will never happen

these look amazing. I have been looking into game engines and after finding some I have been playing around with art and it's really difficult. I am using GIMP to just draw stuff like characters in 32x32 pixels then rescaling them to be bigger. I have no idea how people can design those pixel games when they have to use all those colors..

idk about 32x32, personally i find the jump from 16x16 to 32x32 to be difficult to make, you have 4x as much pixels you need to place for example. but most retro games have limited color palettes so choosing the right color isn't too hard

So if i know C++ and use SDL2 i can do better than it, at the cost of boilerplate code? Anyway programming and even art, especially pixel art like in this case is rather easy compared to music synthesis.

I can waste an entire day and write 500-1000 sloc, i can do the most simplistic sprites by painting normally at a large scale then shrink to the desired size and patch it afterwards, but i can't get into music at all, i have no talent. How are you going to make the music?

Same way I did the art. I'll sit in front of the computer and grind on until something I like comes out.

Damn. I thought there was a special trick to it at least. I'm thinking of taking piano lessons, maybe those will help me a little.

If you stop to properly learn everything you need to make a game you'll never make one wiz. I think it would be better to learn how to use flstudio or some other software you like and focus on doing content you'll use for your project. I really doubt you need to know music theory and piano in order to make some nice 1 or 2 mins long music loops for your personal project.

From what i got from that short piano lesson was that the composition is indeed subjective and the most you can do is follow some rules about tones and their placement and try your best until you get something pleasing to the ear.

I'm now halfway through a introduction to synthesis from the 80s https://invidious.fdn.fr/playlist?list=PLQ04PwFvui1BCUAE9wxmOqHE51mrDv8Ui
and i must say that it explains very well since in like 10 minutes i managed to create a decent sample by modifying a sine wave with audacity. I will try to make more and then glue them with OpenMPT.
