I have conducted a thorough analysis of anime from the year 2016. The primary purpose of this analysis is to identify works which have artistic merit, and to classify the nature of that artistic merit. Secondarily, my intent here is to rank the works in terms of their superiority in various categories. This will allow for comparison with other surveys of 2016 anime. This analysis is an expression of my own personal opinions and did not involve input from anyone else. I did this for my own intellectual and personal satisfaction, but I also hope that others may find it interesting or useful. At the very least, maybe this will generate some interesting discussion. Additionally, if you're looking for anime to watch, you can peruse through the specific categories I've provided to identify works that are likely to suit your tastes. 

Only anime which started airing in 2016 are considered here. Meaning that anime for which the first season aired before 2016 are not considered (ex. neither Hibike Euphonium nor Love Live are candidates here). The considered anime are evaluated on the basis of all seasons that have aired (not just the first season in 2016). Movies are not included unless they are related to a TV anime (ex. Bungou Stray Dogs). I am conducting reviews for other years using this same system. Annual reviews are typically done as soon as the year ends, but I believe my methodology here is superior for conducting reviews of years retrospectively. Furthermore, classifying the year's best works only by season/genre I find is an ineffective method for identifying meritorious works, so I've included more-specific categories. 

Categories and their results are listed below. Winning titles for each category are separated by commas, with the superior titles being listed first. For the genre categories I've provided two answers (the winning title followed by the runner up). However, polls for anime of the season and anime of the year typically list many top candidates in their results, so I've followed a similar procedure with my results here. For the anime of the season and year results, I've listed the top 5 candidates in order of superiority, with the winning title listed first and the progressively lesser titles listed afterwards.

Regarding the genre results, there are a couple important details:
Note: titles are classified by their superiority with respect to the stated genre alone, not overall quality (for example: x anime is a good sci-fi anime regardless of the writing being terrible, y anime is a good romance anime even though the comedy is unfunny, etc…). For classifications according to overall quality, please see the best-in-season and best-in-year results, or the list of highly scored anime that is provided much further below as well as in the attached table(pic related). Keep in mind that some highly rated shows don't necessarily fit neatly into a genre. Conversely, excelling in a genre category is not necessarily an indication of overall quality. 
Note: the romance genre here refers exclusively to conventional hetero romance; shoujo ai and shounen ai are provided here as separate genres.

Categories which evaluate other noteworthy characteristics are listed below, separated into 5 general sections. Some of these categories refer to characteristics that are ubiquitous to all anime, such as audiovisuals and story. However, other categories evaluate characteristics that are only relevant to a smaller subset of anime, such as humour or suspense. To reflect the differing amount of potential candidates in either case, three winning titles per category are provided for ubiquitous characteristics, whereas only two winning titles are provided for characteristics that are less consistently relevant. Again, winning titles are listed first and the runner(s) up are listed afterwards ordered by superiority with respect to the specified category. In other words, this template is used:

Among those 104 viewed anime, 58 were dropped (not watched to completion, likely due to their low quality from my point of view). Therefore my completion rate was 44.2% (46 of 104). My average score (/10) among completed anime was 6.39. Dropped anime were not considered as candidates in any category. I should mention that although my drop probability is mainly a function of enjoyment, I will sometimes complete disliked shows for idiosyncratic reasons, such as curiosity or cultural interest. For this reason, my completion rate and average score are somewhat arbitrary. Furthermore, a year having a lot of bad shows doesn't diminish the artistic value of its best works.

I'll answer questions ITT and I invite feedback from you. I'm happy to hear suggestions and criticisms towards both my methodology and personal tastes. Feel free to respond with your own answers to my categories. Comments regarding the formatting and design of this analysis are also welcome. If anything is unclear or poorly explained then please don’t hesitate to ask me to clarify.

I watched more 2016 anime than are actually named above. Unsurprisingly, the best shows excel in multiple categories and so the results are dominated by a small subset of the total considered sample size. I'm not particularly fond of action as anything more than a side dish at most, so action/shounen/mecha series are possibly undersampled or underappreciated in this analysis. The same applies for ecchi and harem series. I also tend to be less fond of sports, comedy, and psychological series relative to the average person, so anime of these genres may also be underappreciated.

Takeaway thoughts on 2016: 
Give shows the benefit of the doubt even if you think you can judge things before watching. I was pleasantly surprised by some shows, and also found that many things did not match their descriptions. 2016 was a pretty strong year for female-target-audience stuff as well. As for the best anime of the year, both Flip Flappers and Sangatsu no Lion are deserving of the award, but for different reasons. Ultimately it depends on which aspects (see categories listed above) you value more. Similarly, whether or not someone considers 2016 a good year for anime will depend on their genre preferences. My thoughts on this are already summarized in the strongest and weakest genres categories, and I think that comparing those answers with the seasonal and genre-specific results is fairly self-explanatory. 

Among the common staple genres, I was somewhat disappointed by slice of life. Despite the large number of works and my affection for the genre, only a few slice-of-life anime were particularly noteworthy or even merited any recognition at all. Fantasy was similarly disappointing. Admittedly, fantasy is a more subjective genre, but regardless I found creativity in this realm to be lacking. There wasn't any show that used fantasy elements in a notably unique or compelling way. Most 2016 fantasy shows didn't bring much to the table beyond the classic cookie-cutter fantasy setting we've all seen countless times before. I've named Re Zero and Drifters as the best in the fantasy genre only due to lack of better options. Drifters' anachronistic spin on things is at least somewhat creative, although otherwise it is a fairly typical dark fantasy story. These observations aside, I think 2016 had strong representation across different genres. Most common genres had at least one above-average title, which is not something I expected when I began this investigation; this is another indication of the strong performance of 2016 anime as a whole. 

Analyzing things by season is somewhat arbitrary in my view, but this is how anime discussions are often framed so I'll offer some brief commentary here (within the context of the already outlined constraints of this entire analysis). The Fall season was by far the strongest of 2016, followed by Winter. If I had to pick the weakest season, it would be Spring. 

From my perspective, 2016 was a great year for anime overall. I think this is best demonstrated by there being 10 shows that I rated at least 8/10. Another metric to consider would be my average rating among my top-5 anime-of-the-year candidates, which is 9. 2016 was also a surprising year for me in that the distribution of scores did not reflect my usual genre preferences. In fact some of my top shows came from genres that I am typically less fond of, such as sports and comedy. When I peruse the catalogue of shows that aired in 2015 and 2017, the year 2016 looks like a comparatively better year for anime overall. Of course I can't say that with certainty because I have not evaluated those years as thoroughly as 2016, and a more exhaustive analysis of those years could lead to the unexpected discovery of anime that I value highly. I look forward to making more-robust comparisons between years.

A few other assorted footnotes:

I did try to watch 2016 donghua as well, but many of them do not have any subtitles available. The donghua that I did find subtitles for were typically unremarkable at best, so I doubt I'm missing out on much. The only donghua I did not drop was Nuwa Chengzhang Riji (although I was forced to stop watching due to subtitles not being released). 

If you're wondering about why I included Hina Logi, it's a spinoff of Luck & Logic (2016) so I decided to include it in this analysis even though it aired in 2017. I treated it as a separate series from Luck & Logic because they were practically entirely different anime. 

*The results for the soundtracks and character songs are only preliminary because I'm still waiting to get a hold of some content. So the titles listed for these categories are not final. I will update this post with my final judgments for these categories. This caveat is more relevant to the character songs as obviously I was able to hear all the soundtracks while viewing. Even so, I'd like to sit down and formally evaluate each of the soundtracks among all the considered titles.

You're alright in my books. That show was super solid, especially considering its piss-poor roots.

I've only got 3 questions. How do you judge shows for their respective genre bracket? For instance, Bubuki Buranki was rated highly in action, despite both being full CG and rated lowly overall, as it should be. Clearly CG isn't a disqualifier, and I don't recall anything particularly noteworthy about the choreography, so what specifically are you looking for in regards to categories?
When did you begin the project? I'm curious as to how long it took you to complete full viewing of the entire years worth of shows, and whether or not that'd have any bearing on consequent results.
Lastly, how do you define artistic merit? Though it's supposedly the primary purpose behind this endeavor and I mostly agree with the rankings as is, for various reasons, the wall of text doesn't necessarily give any evidence for such a bold claim besides simple categorization of various areas of supposed excellence. Are we to assume anything above a 6 holds 'merit,' or that anything awarded excellence is automatically worthy regardless?

Lastly, for the future in case you decide to do anything like this again, you might want to include a listing of dropped anime. They don't need to be included into consideration for any genre, but full data is still nice.

Magical succubus Raising Project is my favorite from 2016. While on the surface level it's clearly a Madoka Clone, it shines as a pure battle royale.
As for Battle Royale anime there isn't anything better out there save for Fate Zero, but I always felt that got caught up too much in its philosophizing which wasn't that interesting, and it detracted from the battle royale aspect. It is leagues ahead of every other Madoka Clone, especially when comparing it to the travesties that are Yuka Yuni, Magical succubus Site and Magical succubus Spec Ops Asuka.
What I think of Battle Royale at it's most pure: throw a bunch of unique characters into the mix and let things play out naturally from there based on their personalities and abilities. MGRP does this really well. It has some really nice and memorable characters, great aesthetics and direction.

The genre evaluations are definitely one of the more-subjective parts of this analysis. Basically, for the genre categories, the shows are judged based on how well they excel at the things one would expect/desire in those genres. Action is an obvious one – how enjoyable are the action scenes? How plentiful are they? Are they entertaining? Comedy is another simple one – is the show consistently funny?

I thought about avoiding the genre-based analysis thing, but I think it's one of the more-helpful sections for people looking for recommendations. I also expected it to be one of the more-controversial sections haha. The genre-specific awards should be paired with the other categories and overall ratings to get a sense of an anime's features as a whole.

You sound like you might be fixated on Bubuki Buranki in particular, so let me briefly try to defend it. A 6/10 rating is still an enjoyable (although usually flawed) show for me. Admittedly, action was one of the less-competitive genre categories, but still I almost made Bubuki Buranki the top action show. It was only the action scenes in the third Koutetsujou movie that put it over the edge for me. This might be a reflection of my own biases in that I tend not to enjoy typical action so the unconventional nature of Bubuki Buranki appealed to me. I thought the action scenes in it were creative and fun to watch. There were all sorts of goofy weapons wielded by goofy characters, and I think the CG allowed for stuff that would be harder to pull off with conventional animation. I think it had other noteworthy qualities as well; you can ctrl+F "Bubuki Buranki" on my award lists if you're interested (same applies to any other anime title anybody who is reading this is interested in).

I naturally tended to view anime a few years after the air date, and eventually I made the conscious decision to focus on a single year. The idea to focus on 2016 came before the idea to write this analysis. Eventually I realized I was in a good position to offer insight on the year as a whole, so I decided to write this analysis. So to answer your question, there wasn't really a hard start date, but I would say I started focusing on the year 2016 around late 2019. Most of the anime considered here were watched around 2020, but there are definitely some that I watched further in the past. Although my memory is good, it is certainly possible that the results are unintentionally skewed slightly by this. Thankfully I take notes on anime when I watch them, so I was able to go back and remind myself about what aspects I liked about shows that I watched further in the past.

My goal here was to break down the various characteristics that make an anime enjoyable and then identify shows that excelled in each dimension. I feel like that kind of thing is helpful for people who know specifically what they want from anime.

This is one aspect of this write-up that I debated with myself quite a bit. I was reluctant to include a list of dropped anime because, first of all, this analysis is already very long and talking about dropped stuff will require a lot more space while adding little of value. Second, for shows rated below 5/10, whether or not I watched it to completion is fairly arbitrary. I don't want to give the wrongful impression that some of the absolute trash I watched to completion is better than some of the stuff I dropped. It will take a lot of extra words to explain this and would probably confuse people. Third, I wanted this write-up to be an overall positive thing, so I'd prefer to focus on and discuss the positive characteristics of anime. It's called 2016 Anime AWARDS, haha. I think that focusing on the positive characteristics is most helpful to people, whereas bringing up the anime that I personally disliked will probably quickly devolve into shitflinging.

We already talk a lot on /b/ so I don't have much to question, although I so have some things to talk about.

Surprised that you didn't have Drifters sitting up on the art style awards or even honourable mentions, personally I thought the art style was its only saving graces honestly. Was it just because Hellsing had already done it previously, or just not your thing? Even worse is the lack of "Da Yu Hai Tang" or "In This Corner of the World" there or in animation awards, I personally thought both were immaculately well done art wise. I know you tend to really not like movies, but how do you rate animation and artstyling in movies vs tv series? Movies basically always have a higher budget per minute ratio than TV series do, it's one of the reasons I stick so much with them vs series. On one hand movies are objectively better per minute, but on the other hand I could imagine a different way to rate them - that you might be doing. Are you just comparing the best sakuga moments? Maybe you rate animation separately movie vs movie and series vs series to prevent the comparison altogether, but then again you still rate overall score series vs movies (aka why you have movies sit so low in ratings) so that would be kind of strange to see. Personally I think Da Yu Hai Tang is simple miles ahead of anything listed, but I'm interested in seeing your response since I do think you have a bit of contradiction when it comes to movies.

While I'm not a shounen fan at all and you know that, I am VERY surprised to see Mob Psycho not make a single appearance. What struck you as wrong in that show? I though it did everything a shounen should, and then some. Great little series I thought, think I gave it a solid 6 or 7/10 which is pretty rare for me to give any standard shounen really.

Finally I do know you kind-of skip over movies usually, but how the hell did In This Corner of the World, Your Name and Koe no Katachi not even get mentioned at all? Personally I didn't enjoy Kimi No Na Wa or Koe No Katachi that much, especially Kimi No Na Wa I tend to hate all shinkaishit melodramas, but I still respect the films enough that I would bring them up in a 2016 awards show.

First of all, movies were not considered as candidates for any of the awards (unless they were TV-anime sequels, in which case they were lumped in with the TV series). Sorry, I should make this clearer. As you rightfully point out, multiple movies from 2016 could be competitive in the visual categories. Comparing TV anime to movies seemed like apples to oranges to me though.

I thought about not even mentioning movies at all because I tend to like movies less than other people. I just added a list of movies I liked as an afterthought, basically. Maybe I should move that part to the very end of the write-up to avoid confusion.

I awarded Drifters the second-best character designs of the year. Its visual flavour primarily manifested itself in the characters themselves more than anything else, as I recall. I'm kind of splitting hairs here though and an honourable mention for art style wouldn't be unjustified.

I did my best to try to like Mob Psycho. I swear I tried. I disliked literally all the characters though and couldn't deal with the juvenile shounen writing. The visuals weren't enough to keep me watching. If I hadn't dropped it then it definitely would be recognized here for its visuals. On the subject of shounen, Sousei no Onmyouji actually caught my interest but I couldn't handle the repetitive fight scenes. I'd be interested to hear what others have to say about it though.

Very true, but for instance Hai to Gensou no Grimgar only manifests any sort of uniqueness or quality in its background work. I also think Drifters actually had some interesting backgrounds as well such as pic ralted, not as good as Grimgar obviously, but Drifter's backgrounds are far better than Grimgar's character designs which are the most bland things possible.

Situations like this are one of the main reasons I made character design its own separate category. Also, in my opinion, for every decent background in Drifters there were easily a dozen low-effort chibi-style ""comedy"" skits.

Very true, I suppose if looking at it overall then maybe drifters does deserve some criticism for the lacklustre parts. I guess when I think about tv series artistically I tend to just ask what moments stood out or were good at all, since I know that budget constraints tend to lead to aspects like chibi scenes being used to pad time and reduce animation/background costs. I mean the only way you are going to get drifter/hellsing tier heavy shading artstyles with quality animation at all times is in movies; such as Redline, Ninja Scroll, etc. Either way I guess I understand your thinking about this more now.

Really? I thought he got progressively better as you went along the series. Guess its just taste difference. I am still surprised you dropped it entirely though, I thought it was pretty unique for a shounen. BNHA for instance I watched but could totally understand someone dropping, because its just so overly battle shounen and boring, it also only seems to get worse as you watch it going deeper into the shounen battle tropes. Mob psycho reminded me more-so of OPM, than a pure shounen like BNHA does. I'm guessing you must have dropped BNHA too right? Hell that show got even me real close to doing so, and I never drop anything no matter how bad it is.

I really hate this. I don't know how anyone was able to watch shit like kemono friends or land of the lustrous (I think that's its name). I watched beastars and it was really painful at times. The weirdest part is that they always save the CG for the most important parts like fight scenes cause those are the most expensive, but then they just animate the backgrounds and side characters normally. It's so ass backwards, CG should be for the shit I'm not paying attention to.

OP here. I just want to mention that if the award lists are difficult to read you can paste them into a word processor and increase the font size and line spacing. I realize that the formatting is not ideal, but I am limited by the imageboard platform. Also, for people who don't feel like reading, only the first few paragraphs are necessary for understanding the award lists.

Right now I plan on doing this again for 2017 anime. So far, it seems like there are fewer anime that appeal to me from that year, so the candidate pool will probably be smaller.

OP here. I recently realized that there was an 8-episode Shaft OVA (about equivalent to a cour in runtime) which I overlooked that technically began airing in Fall 2016, so should have been included in this analysis. The OVA is titled Kubikiri Cycle: Aoiro Savant to Zaregototsukai, and you can read my review for it in another thread if you’re interested. I rated it 5/10 and the only noteworthy qualities it had were script, OST, and cinematography. It merited honourable mentions in these categories (see further below).

I’ve also been rethinking the mystery/psychological genre category. This was in part triggered by my (presently almost complete) rewatch of Flip Flappers. For some reason I overlooked Flip Flappers as a candidate in this category, when it is in fact a good so-called ‘psychological’ show that also has mystery elements. It won so many other categories, it was like it was hiding in plain sight to me. Kubikri Cycle also has some notable mystery elements.

Accordingly, I’ve changed my mystery/psychological winners to the following:
(HM = Honourable Mention)

Mystery/Psychological: Flip Flappers, Joker Game
Mystery/Psychological(HM): Kubikiri Cycle, Re Zero

Consequently, I’ve now removed mystery/psychological from the weakest genres list, which now only includes fantasy (2016 had good genre diversity).

And the inclusion of Kubikiri Cycle has changed the following honourable mention lists:
