Part of Notre-Dame Spire Collapses as Paris Cathedral Catches Fire

>A large fire broke out at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris on Monday evening, causing part of the historic church’s spire to collapse as the blaze spread along its roof.

>André Finot, a spokesman for the cathedral, said in a telephone interview that the cause of the fire remained unknown, and there was no immediate indication that anyone had been hurt.

>Thousands of Parisians and tourists gathered on the banks of the Seine river and watched in shock as the fire tore through the cathedral’s wooden roof and brought down part of the spire. Video filmed by onlookers and shared on social media showed smoke and flames billowing from the top of the cathedral.

>“It hurts to watch this. The cathedral is the symbol, the heart of Paris,” said Pierre-Eric Trimovillas, 32. The crowd gasped and cried in horror as the spire fell, Mr. Trimovillas said, adding, “Paris is beheaded.”

>Angelique de Almeida, 32, watched the fire through tears. “We are going to lose her, everything is up in flames,” she said. “We lose this, we lose Paris. It is apocalyptic. And this is the Holy Week.”

>President Emmanuel Macron of France canceled a major speech that was scheduled for Monday evening, in which he was supposed to announce measures addressing the Yellow Vest protest movement that has roiled the country over the past months.

Because of people like you who thinks of aesthetic as this higher than life things and that people who don't care are wrong, uncultured, philistine, etc. Appreciating and creating the aesthetically pleasing may not be pretentious. Baby boy born without skin in Texas

>Ja’bari Gray has been hospitalized since his birth on Jan. 1 at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, the San Antonio Express-News has reported. With most of his skin missing, except for on his head, he was initially diagnosed with aplasia cutis, a rare congenital absence of skin.

>After he was transferred Friday to Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, specialists there tentatively diagnosed him with epidermolysis bullosa, a rare genetic connective tissue disorder that leaves skin extremely fragile and subject to blisters and tears even from minor friction or trauma.

>Ja’bari now has skin on his head and some on his legs but none on his arms or torso, so he is being treated with frequent dressing changes and ointments to ward off infection, said his mother, Priscilla Maldonado.

>Doctors plan to perform surgery to cut scar tissue that is fusing Ja’bari’s chin to his chest. His eyes also have been fused since birth. Medicaid is covering some of the child’s medical expenses, Maldonado said, and the family is getting help from Taco Cabana, which employs both parents. There’s also a GoFundMe account set up.

>“Even if he does pull through, we don’t know what the future holds,” the mother said. “We’re just praying every day. Every day is a blessing.”

Sonic the Hedgehog to be redesigned after criticism of film trailer

>Sonic the Hedgehog director Jeff Fowler has announced that “changes” will be made to the forthcoming movie based on the video game after the trailer premiere was met with blistering criticism.

>The three-minute trailer, featuring star Jim Carrey as Dr Eggman alongside the CGI-animated hedgehog, debuted on Tuesday, and was greeted with considerable derision. The Guardian’s Keith Stuart described it as “a 200mph slap in the face” and said the central character “resembles a cheap knock-off Sonic toy your child might win at a fairground stand and then be terrified of”. The character’s human-style teeth drew particular flak on social media.

>Using the hashtag #gottafixfast, Fowler – a VFX specialist whose previously worked on Spike Jonze’s adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are – posted a message on social media saying: “Thank you for the support. And the criticism. The message is loud and clear… you aren’t happy with the design & you want changes. It’s going to happen.”

>Sonic the Hedgehog has been in development as a movie since Hollywood studio Sony acquired the adaptation rights in 2013. However, it failed to get a project off the ground, and the rights passed to Paramount in 2017. The film is due for release in November.

Sonic is such a dumpster fire, a terrible movie that makes everyone cringe can only be fitting to what that character has become, the massive amount of butthurt it is generating in asspies is a blessing to behold.

I pity the poor artists that will be going on crunch just to finish that shitty film no one could possibly be excited to work in. Even when they redesign it still will flop and they will get hate for it.

Also Sonic might just be the fucking last straw of Jim Carries career before he finally kills himself like he has been hinting at for so long. Dude started as a joke in Ace Ventura, he proved everyone he could be a serious actor and now is back at being a sad clown , he has come full circle, his arch is over and it could only had happened with him being associated with the most autistic IP in the world. Its such a shitshow, this is not the best timeline, but is pretty funny still.

I wouldn't change a thing if I was the director. There's absolutely nothing anyone can do to make people happy, doesn't matter now. I'm looking the reaction to this on You Tube and elsewhere, it's obvious most of them don't know nor care about the games to even read a wiki about it. I see people complaining about elements that are actually from the games (like complaining Sonic is an alien).

>the massive amount of butthurt it is generating in asspies

If you're implying people who actually play the games are butthurt, well, yeah you're right. However you probably haven't seen or heard any of them. I'm following the buzz on this and 9 out of 10 people have no idea what they're talking about.

IF they actually wanted to make a movie for the people who play those games, it would be a full 3D movie. They know nobody actually play the games so they decided to make this one instead. I think people are complaining because it doesn't look like the Sonic they know, you know, the one I uploaded to this post. They even fucked up the title, who is Sonic? I thought it was Sanic all along.

I agree. I actually hope they don't change his design too much. I am (or was, when I was younger) a big fan of Sonic and planned to see this particular movie on that principle alone.

The movie design in it's completion does have glaring issues but I'm glad they somewhat redesigned Sonic for the movie rather than just CG superimposing the same old modern Sonic from the games that's been done to death.

It's really only minor things that look off, dependant on the angle and animation. In PIC 1 where the issues are hidden by the angle, still-frame and pose (Sonic's body being too "long" and having no muscle definition, the ugly facial details such human teeth and visible eyelashes, eye rims), it's looks like everything I would have hoped for, and I hope their touch-ups don't go beyond those points.

I like Sonic's game design, but in a live-action movie I would like to see Sonic adapted to that environment. Something just feels lame and uninspired about having a movie that's essentially just PIC 2; as if they simply shot the movie to feel like, say, a Jim Carrey movie (to the the same degree was Looney Tunes: Back in Action was a "Brendan Fraser movie") and then pasted Sonic in post like a special effect.

I agree that they went overboard with some details and made him look grotesque. However, doing him in realistic 3D CG, giving him animal textures, muscles and tendons makes it seem as though Sonic is a legitimate part of the world as opposed to some sort of tulpa, elf or fairy, so I agree with the direction.

I think people who just want to see nothing but cartoon-game-Sonic, with perhaps a realistic texture, and claim that mock ups such as PIC 3 are "done right" are being silly. I would be disappointed if Sonic had been done this way, and am somewhat irritated that he ultimately may be, because the directors immediately threw away artistic integrity in the favour of braindead bandwagoners who don't like Sonic and weren't going to see the movie anyway, and whiny over-reactive fans.

AMD says its chips are immune to crippling new vulnerabilities

>As if Spectre and Meltdown weren't bad enough, researchers recently unveiled a quartet of new CPU flaws: Zombieload, RIDL & Fallout, and Store-to-Leak Forwarding, known as MDS vulnerabilities. They're serious enough that Intel-powered PC owners need to patch them immediately, which will unfortunately impact performance – especially in multi-threading mode. However, AMD owners are in luck. On its website, Intel's rival said that its chips are immune to the problems thanks to built-in hardware protection checks.

>Continuing with the bad news for Intel, Linux-specialist site Phoronix ran tests showing that the patches can significantly impact performance. Intel machines ran 16 percent slower on average with the new updates installed and hyper-threading enabled, compared to a 3 percent hit on AMD chips.

>To make matters worse, Apple and Google have advised Intel users to completely disable hyper-threading on Intel chips if they really want to be safe. That can cause performance to drop by 40 to 50 percent, depending on the application. Again, AMD chips don't need to be patched for the new bugs, and there's no need to disable simultaneous multi-threading (SMT), which is AMD's equivalent to Intel's hyper-threading.

33 killed in fire at Japanese anime studio after man screaming 'you die!' set building alight

>A man screaming “You die!” when he burst into an animation studio in Japan before allegedly igniting the building on Thursday was arrested as authorities said 33 people were killed in the blaze.

>Most of the dead and the injured, at least 36 of them, were workers at Kyoto Animation, known for stories featuring high school succubi. A fire official told reporters that everyone is accounted for and nobody else is believed to be missing from the blaze.

>The fire started in the three-story building in Japan’s ancient capital after the suspect, 41, sprayed an unidentified liquid accelerant near the front door. Workers inside were forced to find other exits and possibly delaying their escape, Kyoto prefectural police and fire department officials said.

>Kyoto fire department official Kazuhiro Hayashi said 36 others have been injured, 10 of them critically.

>A witness told local reporters that the suspect admitted to spreading gasoline and setting a fire with a lighter. She told NHK public television that the man had burns on his arms and legs and that he was angrily complaining that something of his had been “stolen,” possibly by the company.

U.S. Officials Suspect New Nuclear Missile in Explosion That Killed 7 Russians

>American intelligence officials are racing to understand a mysterious explosion that released radiation off the coast of northern Russia last week, apparently during the test of a new type of nuclear-propelled cruise missile hailed by President Vladimir V. Putin as the centerpiece of Moscow’s arms race with the United States.

>Late Sunday night, officials at a research institute that had employed five of the scientists who died confirmed for the first time that a small nuclear reactor had exploded during an experiment in the White Sea, and that the authorities were investigating the cause.

>Vyacheslav Solovyov, the scientific director of the Russian Federal Nuclear Center, said in a video interview with a local newspaper that the institute had been studying “small-scale sources of energy with the use of fissile materials.”

>But United States intelligence officials have said they suspect the blast involved a prototype of what NATO calls the SSC-X-9 Skyfall. That is a cruise missile that Mr. Putin has boasted can reach any corner of the earth because it is partially powered by a small nuclear reactor, eliminating the usual distance limitations of conventionally fueled missiles.

>In several recent Pentagon and other government reports, the prospect of a Russian nuclear-powered cruise missiles has been frequently cited as a potential new kind of threat. They are launched into the air and able to weave an unpredictable path at relatively low altitudes.

Wisconsin fugitive wanted on child sex charges survives 3 years in makeshift bunker powered by solar panels: police

>A Wisconsin fugitive wanted on child sexual assault and child pornography charges hid out for more than three years in a makeshift bunker powered by solar panels and a pedal generator before a hunter stumbled onto him last week, police said.

>WSAW-TV reports that several months ago Thomas Nelson of Wausau found a bunker with a log door carved into an embankment on state land in the township of Ringle west of Wausau, about 145 miles north of Madison, the state Capitol. He became curious and returned to the bunker on Friday morning to see what was inside.

>The door was unlatched so he went inside. He discovered 44-year-old Jeremiah Button, who disappeared in February 2016 just weeks before he was scheduled to stand trial on child sexual assault and child pornography charges.

>"I pushed the door open, and I look inside and I can see canned foods, there's little storage boxes, and I'm like … I gotta go in," Nelson told the television station. "I come around the corner a bit and there he is, laying in his bed. I mean, I was shaking when I went in, I was shaking when I went out."

>He moved away and called police, guiding them to the bunker's door. A 20-minute stand-off ensued before Button surrendered. Marathon County Sheriff's Deputy Matt Kecker said Button seemed almost glad for human interaction.

>Kecker said Button told deputies that he had been building the bunker while his case was moving through court, stockpiling it with items he found in the Marathon County landfill.

>Sheriff's Lt. Jeff Stefonek said Button set up solar panels on the bunker's roof to power LED lights, radios, cooling fans and all manner of electronic equipment. He also had a pedal-powered generator for cloudy days. The bunker was small enough that it stayed warm in winter and cool in summer.

>“He was not only surviving, but thriving in this structure through all of the different supplies he was able to find,” Stefonek said.

>“Given the chance, I think the majority of the U.S. population would choose prison over this type of isolation from human contact,” police said.

anyone interested in anime and 3d modeling might find this news an interesting read

https://www.blender.org/user-stories/japanese-anime-studio-khara-moving-to-blender/

basically blender in the past had an extremely weird interface and nothing was intuituve. but in the latest update everything was redesigned and the layout improved. so people are now suddenly interested in using it and they started supporting blender foundation

 No.224529

>>224528
Huh, maybe I'll try getting into 3D modeling again.

 No.224543

>>224528
I've been using Blender3D for 8 years and the Blender Foundation can kiss my fat wizard ass. The old UI didn't have the universal hotkeys and on-screen help that other 3D packages shared, but it was good in its own right and had some scattered misceleaneous advantages over the norm. Plus there's always been a premade config to match the UI and hotkeys of Softimage products selectable from the main menu. The change hurts my butt because it was FORCED on to users. There was an included "Classic" interface mode but it was just flat out broken beyond use. Plus they didn't ease in the change gradually as a suplement to rolling releases and instead tacked it on full-force to a pivitol, anticipated build (In-house realtime PBR, because forget about just fixing OpenGL).

The reason studios are making the switch isn't because Blender is superior. Blender is by no means superior to Max or Maya. These studio execs just caught on that now with the interface being more standardized, they can switch employees over to Blender without needing to retrain them, saving them potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars anually in not just the saved training, but by no longer needing to buy multiple commercial licenses for Max or Maya.

Blender can make some really great anime effects that can integrate well with traditional cells, but frankly 3DCG in anime these days is still crummy in my opinion, no matter what software is used. Too many studios see it as a shortcut device for rushing deadlines rather than one which introduces new creative opportunities on top of the traditional methods.

Sorry for the angry rant but both traditional animation and 3DCG are my childhood hobbies that I've been struggling to make something with since forever. Now 3D is becomming such a highly automated process and people look to YouTube personalities to learn how to create meme scenes in minutes while disregarding the fundamentals and theory behind CG. And now these lazy kitbashing, scanning, sculpting freeloaders are using their flashy raytraced flavor of the month renders to weasel their way in to the 2D industry to bring that down too.

 No.224544

>>224543
i think thats good though. i never could wrap my head adound actually modeling in old blender (for like 12 years ive been too autistic to learn anything but sketchup) and the interface and shortcuts made no sense, but i used it for rigging skeletons, uv unwrapping and painting, checking normalmaps, and rendering stuff. this was mainly for game modding and just making crude assets that i could make purely visual 'scenes' in unity, so it didnt bother me. im hoping when i have free time some weekend that with the newer version i can model in it finally without my brain being too confused, all the videos ive seen of the new version impress me

 No.224545

>>224544
The new version definitely does come with a lot of new good stuff that will help you learn traditional methods. If you're still in to making those scenes, Eevee renderer and Cycles (if you have the PC for it) can make some really great environments. I used to do the same thing with Source engine back in the day. World building in 3d is really fun.

There's a crusty old 3D thread on /hob/ somewhere if you ever have any renders to share.

UK teen ‘blinded’ after 7-year diet of French fries, white bread

>A teenager in the UK has gone blind and deaf after living off a diet of chips, crisps and sausages for up to a decade in a case believed to be the first of its kind in the country.

>The 17-year-old, who has not been named, ate only chips, Pringles, sausages, processed ham, French fries and white bread, making him malnourished, Bristol Live reported.

>According to the teenager's mother, her son began going off his meals when he was about seven years old and used to eat only junk food.

>He told doctors he did not like the "texture" of fruits and vegetables.

>The boy began to lose his hearing at the age of 14. His eyesight also quickly deteriorated and he has now been left with no job and no social life as a result, said his mother.

>The teen is apparently suffering from an eating disorder known as ARFID (avoidant-restrictive food intake disorder).

>Those suffering from the condition often avoid food with a certain texture, smell, taste or appearance, or only eat it at a certain temperature, according to eating disorder charity Beat.

>The teenager's lack of nutrition severely damaged his optic nerve, causing a condition known as nutritional optic neuropathy (NON).

>Dr Denize Atan, who has been caring for the teenager, said the patient is still eating mostly the same food—although his nutrition has improved through vitamin supplements.

I wouldn't go as far as describing it as meek, but generally we give of the vibe of just wanting to be left alone and wanting to leave the rest of the world alone for the most part.

Some people interpret the "no females" rule as an aggressive attack against succubi. They can't even fathom the concept of men who just want to, at the very least, talk to other men and men only, without hearing the opinions of females. They believe that if you don't want to hear what the Mrs. says about your hair loss or what you jerk off to, then clearly you hate all of the Mrs. and are therefore a horrible human in need of correctional therapy.

If Wizardchan is misogynistic because it disallows females to post, and is a hellhole as a result - does that mean Crystal Cafe is misandrous for not allowing males to post, and is also a hellhole because of it?. No, that's fucking stupid. Just as there exist places in meatspace for only one sex to congregate shall there also be websites designed exclusively for either one. There are boy schools and lady schools, boy restrooms and lady restrooms, boy teams and lady teams, boy websites and lady websites. And if someone doesn't like it, they can ignore the 1% of established groups or places that exclude either sex and engage only with the countless places and programs which involve both.

If we were attacking the opposite sex with our keyboards by harassing them on other boards, forums, and whatnot, then it would be misogyny. But we're not. Some of us have been abused by females, some of us are incapable of talking to females, some of us are religiously against desiring female companions, some of us are already engaged with simulated females, some of us are actually roleplaying as Tolkienian wizards who know no lust, and YES - some of us just plain HATE females. All of us have our own reason for avoiding female contact, and this site is the place where we go to talk among others who also share this uncommon lifestyle. "Disregard Females". That's the slogan. It's not "Hate females" or "Females suck". It's just "Disregard them while within this neck of the internet". it's not misogynistic, it's just a rule. If anybody should think that to not care to hear a female's opinion is a personal attack against every female, then shit, every man and succubi walking down the street not actively perusing the attention of females is a misogynist.

this is a pet hate of mine, 48 years ago i started working on a dig in kali.
we spent 4 years on the excavation of an ancient amerind village in north central kali.
by '72 we had to shut down as the farmers wanted their fields back.
we had enough work in sorting and processing finds to work for maybe 10 years ?
fast fwd to the present, the succubus who was in charge of the dig never processed a SINGLE FUCKING SHELL BEAD!
after she died her daughter told me it was all sitting in the garage since '72.
no final report was started let alone filed!!!
it seems there are MILLIONS of artifacts/final reports from the last 200 years that were never cataloged reported from all over hell and gone!!!!
archeology's dirty little secret!!!
the shit hidden in NYMNH alone would require many lifetimes to process!
i want to cry but it would do no dam'd good.
4 years of work for NOTHING!
