How do you look back at the early 2000s now? Specifically the years 2001-2006?
Interesting. I think the era was either full of Guido Chads or depressed numetal/emo type of people. Everyone seems to be depressed possibly from the turn of the century or 9/11. Every media is shot in newyork inner city evem the music videos which i find cool.

It was a shitty time period to be sure.
-WWE although having the semi decent post Attitude Era, Ruthless Aggression era was soon to have that fizzle out into the shitty C-Nation (John Cena era) PG "WWE Universe" (a truly gag inducingly lame name/phrase) due to WCW going out of business and WWE no longer having any competition to keep them on their toes (and from fucking over their fanbase with retard tier tripe fit only for soccer moms and six year olds).
-9/11 the next big shitty Jew false flag mass murder spectacle after ZOG's precursor which was the Oklahoma City bombing false flag.
-Terrible shitty Bush era presidency but then both major establishment political parties are controlled by Jews and all "top" candidates of course are mass murdering criminals that belong in super max prisons but I digress.

Also of note of this time period was the oldschool message board metal fans absolute raging hatred towards the band "Staind" and emo culture/music in general. I liked some of Staind's stuff personally but again see the metaller's point about the band or lead singer coming across as whiney and weak.

In terms of big franchises there's also Wind Waker (2002), which was great but I don't think the Zelda franchise really shat itself until Skyward Sword. And Majora's Mask is a better game anyway IMO (I guess that was a 2000 title too).

I was at highschool in 01-03 so horrible. Internet was primitive, both the amount of stuff available and speed were nothing compared to today. I remember I could literally read every manga scan groups released back then (it was like a couple dozen scanlations on irc but really only band of hawks and omanga were doing interesting titles) and the quality was not that great either. There was no YouTube or similar services decent enough so we were watching gifs or 15 seconds movs you would download from websites. The process of downloading like a dozen of those would take you about a hour. The difference from then to today is like the difference between Radio era and the advent of TV.
The good things we had back then internetwise are still here today so there's nothing to miss about. Things like emulators, manga scans, forums (in one way or another), chiptunes music. And they all improved in the last decade, except for N64 emus, unfortunately.
Now, about video-games. WOW killed a much superior game, Ultima Online, both simplifying what an RPG is suppose to be and at the same time bringing in tons of people who had never played tabletop games before playing electronic RPGs, which effectively killed much of the roleplaying aspect online RPGs could have had. And I don't think it's ever coming back. It's effectively dead. It's funny when you hear something "on this server you must role play" when this was just how you played an RPG back in early 1999, 2000. Not that I hold a grugde against it, but the culture of MMORPGs that wow brought about made impossible for UO players to transition to another game. I think it was for the best though, in retrospect. I needed to quit anyway.
As for single player games, well, if you liked then back then, you can continue to play them today. I don't think the gaming industry got worse, at least for my own tastes. The Total War series keeps improving, though recently I can't run the newer installments anymore because I can't afford anything better than this ancient rig. AoE series keeps pretty much the same, it's just the novelty is over now. Same with Paradox games. Nintendo games are still cute and fun for what they are. Some times they miss, some times they get just right, but mostly their games don't change that much either. New and crazy clones of Tetris, Arkanoid and Ice Climber still gets released like crazy, can't keep up with it anymore, so that's good. Sonic Mania is probably the best Sonic I played and I love Sonic 2 and 3 to death. I think the only games that got worse is Fallout and Goemon who is effectively defunct unless someone purchases the IP from Konami. Stronghold too is dead which is a pity. I think the biggest shame is the death of Arcade games. Not just Arcade stores but the culture of arcade who got replaced for most part with smartphone gaming, which is ABSOLUTE SHIT. To imagine you had things like Metal Slug as a way to grab your money. The quality of those games are decisively superior to the coin grabbers you have today. But they're still releasing KOF and Slugs to I guess it's not too bad.
As for manga, I was never into seinen and shounen stuff so I'm pretty much unaffected by the whole cute succubi doing cute things that changed the scene of manga for an older audience in general. I just read corocoro stuff pretty much so, whatever. And now I can actually read some Japanese and of course it's a million times better than it was for me 15 years ago. I keep finding some stuff from the 30s available for free online and it's awesome. Anime I don't really care about it at all so that's another thing I didn't keep track. But the fact you now have charts of upcoming released and sites that keep track of absolutely everything under the sun must be pretty nice for people who enjoy anime.
Things that I ACTUALLY miss about early 2000s; My health was A LOT BETTER. Both mentally and physically. I held a job in 2005 believe it or not, for a full year, working at a cyber cafe and all the funny stories about people outside my family is from that short window in my life. Relationship with my parents were also better of course, since I had a job and was still young enough to be seen as "young man trying figure it out what he wants". Nobody thinks that way towards a guy in his 30s whose last job was well over a decade ago. My family was better financially as well. So I think to sum it up, digital life improved while real life took a nose dive. Fuck me.

I don't know how old you're but I think much of that list is nostalgia. Pokemon is virtually the same game since the very first installment. In fact I think Sun and Moon has a bunch of designs that blow the previous titles out of the water. Specially for the starters. Age of Empires continues to be the same game pretty much It's just not novelty anymore. It's going to be tough to make something better than RE4 but it will come eventually. RE7 was not bad at all for example.

If you go to old forums and stuff you'll find plenty of old people complaining how WOW killed all the good and sacred stuff we had before it. But guess what, people itt talk about WOW vanilla like it's something amazing. This gives you some perspective. Besides you can still play UO today, it's just many people don't want to anymore.

Flash games were absolutely amazing. This easy cross-browser thing that would never break and made it so you could play any game without installing. And no one bitched about money because people would slap an ad in the game and that was that. Flash games were absolutely amazing. This easy cross-browser thing that would never break and made it so you could play any game without installing. And no one bitched about money because people would slap an ad in the game and that was that. No idle games, no flower picking and hunger meters in AAA games, no microtransactions, the only problem was too many upgrades in your tower defense game. It was THE indie scene, I've played flash games a decade ago that still outshines the shit that gets passes for games today.
It seems there's some argument over what ended this period. The iPhone obviously. Killed Flash, made social media popular because that's where you upload selfies, brought upon a massive surveillance state where anyone could record you at any time, dumbing down of UI to cater to touchscreens, tying games to an easy microtransaction service and encouraging you guessed it microtransactions.

Meh, who cares? It was nothing special and was reminiscent to that of the late '90s. The only ones who say it was special only say so because they grew up in that very era and are just looking at things through rose-coloured glasses. Nothing particularly innovate came around this time, either. It seems like everything, especially tech-wise, was moving incredibly fast. I got a new computer and it was already shit in a year and a half. Games that came out just a few years ago seemed old and outdated. Every year my internet got significantly faster and faster. Now everything is stagnating for years, I have the same internet speed for the past 5 years, graphics card I bought nearly 3 years ago not only handles everything that comes out now, but even costs almost the same it did back then.

I have quite fond memories of the early 2000s, but I'm not deluded into thinking that they were this wonderful utopia. My most fond memories were on the internet, where I spent all of my time playing flash games, watching fan animations, and listening to music on youtube in 240p. Also, I appreciate the Sum 41 pic, considering they were my favorite band around the time.

I sperged and did during a workplace conversation about dating, and people asked me why why I am single despite being intelligent, fit and having money, now everyone makes jokes about me being a virgin… jokes on them, I can quit whenever and I am doing most of the work anyway, so the business would probably go under without me there, my resume is good enough that I get a lot of job offers, but I really don't need more money or more responsibility, and I am unapologetically unambitious.I will probably make some spaghetti and watch anime now, and that is not something I ever thought I would be doing in the early 2000s
it took me until the end of high school to become conscious about fashion or the fact certain clothes were in/popular. so of course back then i was oblivious. i had the timeless american little boy haircut and normal clothing my mom bought for me. i remember when i first got cargo pants i thought they were so fucking cool i could zip them off to become shorts and stuff the pockets with anything. i managed to squint in class so i never got glasses until i was way older. i often wore succubi shoes because light blue was a nice color and no one told me otherwise. was just starting middle school back in 2000 i think. i remember all the other kids had spiked hair but i didnt know about hair gel so i thought they just didnt bathe properly for a few years. i would play pokemon games on the bus, get home, play playstation 2 games, watch cartoons, and repeat. i think it was the end of your timeframe in 2006 i got into runescape and then mmorpgs, internet forums, imageboards, etc eventually. the best time was when everything on the internet was new and i could explore anywhere and learn something or be entertained.

I feel an increasing fondness towards it. Personally I think video games and internet were at their peak during the early 00s. Movies weren't as good as the 80s or 90s but at least everything wasn't Disney shit.
The thing I miss most about it is that people were more innocent and friendly back then. I'm not claiming it was all sunshine and roses because it wasn't but the average person was much nicer in the earlier 00s. Smartphones and social media addiction have desensitized so many people, we're living in a society full of cynical assholes now.

Even a computer from 2012 is still enough today. The most problems you'd have is hardware decoding not functioning for youtube and such if your videocard is too old. Otherwise I'd still be on my Radeon 6950.

Without reading other comments first so I have some more clarity on my perception. In 2007 I had started highschool so in 2006 I was in my last year of middle school. So I was 4th grade in 2001? Anyways it was pretty shitty like the rest of my childhood previously due to my parents and the cascade of shit making me an outcast all over probably stemming from that dysfunction. I tried to follow some trends but I just couldn't connect to any of it and in 2006 that was when I was beginning to realize I wasn't gonna be having a normal life. I remember just after that 2007 sitting on my first day of highschool in the cafeteria with breakfast alone thinking to myself "yup it's fucked alright." and so the ride on the train of multilayered self destruction through the state of confusion began. I was never into popular media because I was never able to feel a connection to it in the past outside of what my parents plopped me in front of to shut me up so I was off the beaten path there occasionally happening to like some popular things in the process like some metal bands I discovered or maybe an anime that was more mainstream in its own bubble. Guess I had no way of not becoming a wizard in the first place thinking back on this mess.

When suddenly I came across my old middle school diary and found (of all things) a preview for a comic I made for him meant to parody Alien (we did a bunch of parodies like Willy Wonka, Jaws, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Grinch, etc.). It's crazy how the world works.
This was, of course, my middle school mindset, so not for the faint of cringe.

I still not only have ADSL for over 10 years now, I have worse download speeds than I had at the start of this decade, probably because more people live in my area now, but there was 0 progress regarding internet infrastructure. And in 2010 I thought that by 2015 we would all be on Fibre optic, and look at me now.
