Finished playing SMT Nocturne HD Remaster
I wanted to play and actually beat this before SMTV Vengeance came out, I've emulated the game a few times over the years but always quit around the Nihilo Assembly.
The remaster for this game was kinda lazy, I thought people were over exaggerating when shitting on it but no somehow they released it with 30 FPS and the same shitty compressed audio. Luckily there were mods that fixed a lot of the issues.
As for the game itself I mostly enjoyed it, the encounter rate could get annoying at times and some of the later dungeons get really obnoxious with the invisible teleporter but the atmosphere was great throughout and the combat was always enjoyable. I ended up going TDE since I didn't care for any of the Reasons or the teacher.

the brutal encounter rate for all the smt games is what turns a 5 hour journey into a 40 hour game. I still remember that miserable tower you were expected to climb at the ending.

Pre-rendered backgrounds with 3D assets should've remained until at least the 2010s for certain genres. I'm pretty sure much of the love for the golden age of Final Fantasy (VII- IX) and the early Resident Evil games is due to the highly detailed nature of pre-rendered graphics. The worlds depicted felt more alive and lived in, meaning kids could imagine themselves in it more easily.

It's just a factor that nobody really picks up on when discussing these games. I remember my Grandma watching me play through the Winhill sequence in Final Fantasy VIII and going on about how beautiful the village looked. I don't think you could've had anything comparable in detail in full 3D for at least fifteen years, and not anything as consistently pretty over the course of a full game until around today.

Final Fantasy X was sort of a graphical step down in a sense of so much being plain, flat and ugly. So much so that when you step into a pre-rendered background house, you're taken back by how detailed that is compared to the ugly flatness of the outside.

because modern players would complain about not being able to move the camera around, I've seen many people saying old resident evil games are "unplayable" because of fixed camera angles
>And why did the point & click genre die out?
they just fell out of fashion, the point and click public moved on to other stuff like walking simulators

>And why did the point & click genre die out?
Most were really really bad and even the good ones didn't sell that well.
With very few exceptions they have always had relatively poor sells compared to most other kinds of games.

As for why modern games don't use prerendered backgrounds as much, while you still see them in indie titles on occasion the main reason is the technology has moved on and now you don't have the same hardware limitations that prevent you from actually rendering stuff in the distance instead of faking it with a painting. You can have as many complex polygons within a scene as you want provided your programing is decent. Prerendering has always been a cope for technical limitations.

I do remember some of the areas from ff8. Great salt lake, Tomb of the Unknown King, fisherman's harbor, Lunatic Pandora, Esthar city under attack. The victory arch at Deling…

Incomprehensible plot, but sometimes the art direction wasn't bad

Resident evil on the harder settings where you're expected to dodge zombies is miserable because of the camera angles. Point and click doesn't really resemble modern games in the way we think of them and often had quite bizarre object interactions that were rarely intuitive. They'd often lock you into encounters where you couldn't even get the necessary items through backtracking without an earlier save state.

Almost every single game that I played in 2023 was a game made in Japan. Mainly JRPGs. Now I can't barely play western games, which I found dull and ugly.

when Japan became the best game developer?

agreed. I still pay 25 year old strategy games because the core gameplay is tighter. Indie devs regularly produce good titles using simply rpgmaker or retro aesthetics. There's no excuse, nu gaming is a bunch of cutscenes and streamlined experiences for marvel movie fans

Just adding on to all the negatives the company pulled involving that game.

The only games where microtransations don't bother me is shit like F2P MMOs and other such games using the F2P model.

If I payed a retail price for the game then I should get the full experience of the game without being nickled and dimed.

I watched streamers play it. Everyone says it starts off good but the second 2/3 of the game are unfinished and boring. Very few enemy types. It has Denuvo so it cant be pirated probably for 6+ months minimum. I lost interest.

People are doing some crazy things with OpenMW, there is a huge Star Wars total conversion mod for OpenMW called Starwind for example. Basically a complete game.

I've only just played a bit of Starwind so far, but been in more of a fantasy mood so I've been exploring Tamriel Rebuilt.

There is also home of the Nords which adds a part of Skyrim, and there is another mod that so far adds an island of the coast of Cyrodiil called Province Cyrodiil.

 No.61568

>Starwind
Never heard of this until now cool, I love Morrowind and KOTOR so I'll have to check it out at some point.
I replayed Morrowind a few years ago (vanilla with a few bugfix and QOL mods I don't think I used OpenMW) and it was a great experience. I did install Tamriel Rebuilt as well after I beat the game and explored a little of the new area but I was so overpowered at that point and was just levitating everywhere while invisible so I kind of got bored and quit, seems like it'd be better to explore it early or midgame.

these are some of the only games i can bear to play after a dew decades of video games:

factorio
dwarf fortress
cities skyline
rimworld
sim city 4 (with the network addon mod!)
airline tycoon
pizza connection
theme hospital
anno 1602

they related in genre in the sense that they are building something up: management, city builder, colony sim.

i waited to play dwarf fortress until the premium edition on steam came out with the graphics and so far i very much like it. only recently got into it. it is a lot of fun to play because the z-levels. it feels like being in a sky scraper where there is just infinite floors to build on. it's not really a sky scraper but instead it is a mountain but the dwarfs are so crafty, they make a mountain a nice home. great game. takes a bit to get the hang of but the degree of freedom is really nice, i would think wizards would like it, some probably already do.

few games have felt as nice as theme hospital. i've played the new twopoint hospital, it wasn't bad but it just did not reach the simplistic charm of the original. it doesn't matter that the graphics are so primitive, they clearly depict what is happening. it feels so alive.

currently enjoying project zomboid only because you mentioned it, all credit goes to you.

i like how the game has it's priorities straight. graphics are pleasant and simple, i dig that everything looks like sims 1. it is surprisingly deep and it looks like it can be custom tailored quite a bit.

In this thread, ask other wizards for game recommendations.

I'm starting a new thread to look for wizards who played lots of city building games. I'm looking to get immersed in one of those games and I mean I want to completely forget this world exists. I don't have a preference for theme, though I would prefer not to play anything medieval. However if you played ton of these games and the one you think it's the best happens to be medieval themed I don't mind, let me know. Thanks in advance.

Pathologic is by far the most miserable game I've ever played, don't know if that's what you're looking for.
The original HD version is great, the remake (which is called Pathologic 2 but it's really a remake) is also good, but I prefer the original.

 No.61565

In fact
The second game has a death penalty, meaning every time you die you get debuffed, so it's arguably more tedious. And deaths are stored separately from saves, so it doesn't matter if you load your game, if you died it counts

Which visual novels have you enjoyed lately, wizzies? For me, I'd say my top VN's were Yume Miru Kusuri (only got one ending, am planning on picking it back up in the future) as well as "Our Lost World Beneath the Skies". I'm still looking for that VN that I can give a 10 on in Vndb, which I'm going to reserve for just one.
What qualities do you look for in a VN? I look for depth, music, and variety, and I don't like sex scenes (for YMK I would just skip past).

And they changed most dialogue to remove anything offensive to succubi. Besides various other things getting cut out.

I could excuse all of the content cuts if they didn't butcher the charm and artstyle of the original so much. The devs seem to think dark = scary, and took all the soul out of the menus and sound design.

They made it worse.
Better off emulating.
