I imagine at some point we will get nuclear fusion to be a viable form of energy source. The sooner the better.

I think western liberal democracy will diminish as a desired form of government. Since the French Revolution western culture has only really produced three true ideologies: Liberal democracy, Marxism, and Fascism. I think monarchies of principalities of some kind are the future.

AI art will become much more of a thing. Music will continue to decrease in quality and relevance.

You will only get more depressed the more you find out how the world will accurately look like in the future, you'd usually want to isolate yourself from the source of depression and cope with something unrelated to it but you're doing the exact opposite.

Don't forget anarchy. Anarchy was big back in the day but people forgot about it because of how totally it was dominated by the liberals.

There are two books of dystopian fictions commonly assigned to school students in the English speaking world: 1984 and Brave New World. 1984 is Orwells take on rule through fear and intimidation. Brave New World is rule primarily through pleasure.

The future seems to be neither of these. In the current trajectory, totalitarianism and the removal of freedom will be achieved with literally nothing other than social pressure and the illusion of common opinion. Look at the way everyone copies the opinions and behaviour of others online. Almost no critical thinking.
All a government has to do is to create a million social media AI bots to all parrot the same behaviour and opinions and you can totally manipulate society. I suppose that is already happening. I think it will get worse.

Brave new world isn't even about politics. It's a spiritual sci-fi take on finding meaning beyond the material in a world of abundance and pleasure. Aldous Huxley take on rapidly improving living standards of his time due to capitalist free market. Huxley was into the occult too I believe. People bring up Brave New World while saying "Wooo look at this evil government sedating people with pleasure to keep them ignorant." but the government in the book was never made out to be explicitly evil. They are just materialists and there is no hidden dark secret either. It only sucks if you believe too much material comfort is harmful but again, that's a spiritual and not a political issue.

Ageing population will really start to fuck some countries in East Asia. Shit will hit the fan with that. European countries

The thing I find interesting about the future is the possibility that technology sends us back. In the sci fi series Dune, they invent Holtzman shields that block fast moving projectiles; as a result, soldiers have to go back to melee combat with swords. In the Dune universe, artificial intelligence (thinking machines) becomes so advanced that take over and have to be fought against. Thinking machines (even calculators) are banned and replaced with human mentats to do large calculations.
Two examples where advancements in technology either
1) make other high technology redundant so you have to go back to low tech
2) becomes so destructive it has to be completely banned and technological progress has to go in a completely different direction.

In my profession now, certain letters have to be written by hand stamped and posted to confirm that it was written by a person; it cannot be written by a large language model. The large language model forces us to abandon the word processor and makes us go back to writing.

There is significant evidence now that the smartphone correlates strongly with a huge collapse in birth rates and other things. I also wonder if certain communities that are anti-tech (The Amish) will end up coming out on top.

I hope that in the future there will be a good distribution of wealth

Ageing population will ruin East Asia and parts of Europe.
We will go back to a Victorian socio-economic model in which wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few and most wealth comes from the inheritance of assets.

In some ways I found peace in this. I used to stress about not voting hard enough, not fighting overreach and surveillance harder, and not making huge philosophical or scientific strides… woke up and realized I'm just some guy that can't save the planet and I feel way better about it.
