 No.43802

1980s and 90s Japan, Anime & City Pop appreciation thread.

All creatives are welcome to reproduce the style and vibes.

Write conlangs in Kanji and Kana.

*Japan is alive so the 1980s autist paradise came and went. We can fork our own culture and keep the vibes alive.

 No.43804

"Autist vibes"? Last time I saw an autist vibing, the teachers had to tackle him and throw him in the hugbox.

A copy of a copy of a copy. Xeroexed to the point where each copy has less definition than the last.

Hollow.

It's not an evolution, it's just listening to 80s Japanese pop music with no context apart from an ill-formed idea of nostalgia that people here weren't old enough to experience. An unsorted amalgamation of what's left of the previous decades, not unlike the general 80s nostalgia which is now basically a delorean bathed in neon lights and synth music.

Even OP's image is an AI generated abbreviation.

"Second-hand nostalgia" alright?!?!

I loved GTA Vice City and I was a little kiddo in 2003, ok?

Besides, I am from exUSSR, where 80s movies (cheesy but badass, VHS era ones) were aired throughout 90s and 00s. I have da nostalgia for my early 2000s, not actual romantic vibes of 198x Valentine Day

With each imperfect memory of the memory, we perfect the concept of the experience.

>an ill-formed idea of nostalgia

80s Japan was perfection, this is the closest to a perfect world.

>Even OP's image is an AI generated abbreviation.

No it's a stock photo, so it's an original.

CASIOPEA (not Cassiopeia) has a lot of those works, that sound like improved, modernized jazz.

Because it is! The genre's name - "JAZZ FUSION" - implies fusion of jazz and whatever pop music was "pop" at the time.

1980s CASIOPEA sounds both boisterous and uplifiting, good.

 No.43838

>Although, a 1940s-born salaryman would probably listen to imported jazz (Stan Getz and suh) or Yukari Ito's singing - so _maybe_ you're right in _that_ regard though

So, I was told Stan Getz' jazz was hot back then in Japan and it would be that kind of jazz fitting for Murakami's "Peter Cat" jazz bar (back in those days, Murakami had a bar).

Urusei Yatsura

1981 series, got a remaster, keeps the 1980s vibe

>What genre is it?

Comedy, that makes fun of the idea of romance

hence "romance" in the tags

>Is the plot any good?

So, a dumb dude somehow emerges victorious in a duel agaist a skilled alien oni gal.

Said alien oni gal, for some reason, is not interesting to that dumb guy (IMO, she has the problems in "too much" and obnoxiousness, she's not a succubus, she's… well… an oni) - yet he does that cartoonish "hey baby you look cute" catc'spamming and gets punched every single episode.

The plot, however, is present and seems to progress, new characters get introduced, some backstories are told. Kinda funny.

Modern 202X rendition has a lot of throwbacks to 1980s, such as synthwave (sometimes) or lack of emphasis on cellphones.

It's literally one of the staples of anime. How are there such knowledge gaps in your knowledge?

What is the point of this whole thread if it's going to be hollow facsimiles paraded around as the real thing? What are you looking to accomplish if it's basically the youtube comments section of Stranger Things clips?

 No.43871

I was talking about the 2022 remaster, which, compared to 1981 series, feels… slightly different.

See, 1981 Otaru looks a bit *too* cool.

2022 Otaru is close to "a funny dork" instead.

but hey, the story's still funny

the 1981 series was "literally one of the staples" though, yes.

 No.43872

>>43868
because I did NOT know "it's literally one of the staples".

See, different people say different things:

GUNDAM vs Macross vs Votom

Super Sentai vs alle

NGE vs [not] NGE

fkit, Naruto vs Bleach

Pokémon vs Mario stuff

Digimon vs Bakugan

forgetting about, say

Cardcaptor Sakura, Gunsmith Cats, Doraemon, Spirited Away, Whisper of Heart, etc.

please recite the other staples, it's 2025. Soon, we'll be dealing with literal zoomers here - as in 30-year-old fellas born in the mid/late 90s

Honestly, 1980s Japanese worked hard. VERY hard. Karoshi-inducing hard.

Nowadays, this stuff is known as "burakku gaisha" - *black* company (where English "black" is a loanword, "burakku").

Ruined sleep due to working in such a sweatshop office of a black corp is the reason the Japanese:

a) have depression
b) feel too guilty of it - they don't know it's not normal!
c) too ashamed to seek psych help
d) do, basically, the same stuff known in China as 996 - 9am to 9pm, 6 days a week

I heard 1980s had a cursed cartoon series also.

The curse started since the screenwriters decided to whack the main character and replace her with another person named the same name.

Her name was Mink or something
