So later on at family gatherings whenever the topic came up I'd just casually said "oh I'm gay actually".

My extended family and everyone we know is extremely homophobic, considering it's eastern europe so dropping that really made people uncomfortable since shit talking fags, minorities or jews is what most talks devolve into once people had their fill of local gossip.

I'd make remarks about the men present if someone tried to pester me to make them uncomfortable.

I don't really know what they think or what my parents later told them because everyone stopped mentioning shit like this to me.
I haven't been disowned or denied help either it just became clear that the topic is taboo. So no bridges burnt.

This obviously requires that your family at least somewhat cares about you or has to maintain an outward appearance of such. Basically saving face.

actually, and this may sound a bit ironic, i did the mistake of rationalizing it and basically saying something to effect that "why would a female want me when i have nothing and can do nothing at the age other people are in the heat of career building?" and their reply was complete BSOD on their part. i don't really remember what they answered (i didn't quite listen), but i remember them saying something to the effect that "cmon you're just gonna chat and stuff, you don't have to take it that far" which in turn made *me* BSOD because i find the idea of chatting with a female completely fucking absurd. to begin with, i've never had much to speak about with males either. yeah i kinda wish it worked as an argument, because aside from that, the only true thing left for me to say is that i'd sooner see them all in hell and that isn't exactly strategically smart.

I was a bit of a flake so I leaned into that. Nothing was worse than mom handing my name and number out to the gal pals trying to marry me off to their kids. I'd just say 'thanks, got other stuff going on right now' and ignore any contacts presented. i guess the psychologically painful part is turning down invitations, because somehow that feels like betraying them, but then again the idiots have no idea what they're signing for when they invite me and what's most important in the end i'll be the only one hurt. but after you decline once or twice they generally stop bothering you.

I think you should genuinely be thankful that there are some people making an effort to socialize with you. Speaking from the experience of going months on end with limited to no human interaction outside of very limited workplace dialogue, it keeps you from spiraling into insanity.

I would be very happy if my parents tried to set me up with people. Not that it would go anywhere, it would give me the opportunity to at least talk to someone in an informal setting a couple of times, before they inevitably grow tired of my presence.
