Has anything you've ever played, watched, listened to, or read ever truly changed your life? No matter how much I experience nothing changes. I used to walk 2 hours a day and I never felt any better mentally than I do now as a neet who never goes outside. My baseline mental state seems impossible to break out of.

it didn’t change my life in any way, but documentaries like hypernormalization do reinforce that feeling that this world is just a dream, a mental image poorly made of a place that’s not what it seems. Many such artworks leave you with that impression

Nope. I've read through hundreds of books on psychology and therapy in the hopes of gaining some insight about myself, but it was all worthless. I'd go through the cycle of reading something, psyching myself out that it was the missing piece of the puzzle, only to wake up tomorrow and either forget about it or realize it was actually nothing and impossible to really apply practically. Eventually I realized that there is nothing wrong with my mind per se, and that no change could originate from the mind anyway, all my problems originated in my body and physical circumstances that I had no power to change. It's all basically random and meaningless, you could have had a much different life if you were slightly taller and with a better face, or if you weren't as poor as a kid, or if your metabolism was different and you didn't grow bitch tits in high school. Life is very concrete and people go around with this illusion that they can change things, but things just work seamlessly on their own, until they don't.

I guess Robert Sapolsky's Behavioral Biology lectures on youtube probably forms the foundation of my worldview. Basically it's just an atheist materialist worldview that posits our thoughts and behavior are determined by our biology and environment but there's also no clear answers to life because humans are complicated.

Define "Truly changed". I have read many books and played many games that in the least completely change my tastes and what I enjoy for entertainment.

Playing Fallout 2 when it came out completely opened my eyes to the postapoc genre. I had no idea it was something that existed. I became one of the biggest fans of the franchise. Playing dnd in middle school gave me a passion for medieval fantasy and to this day I spend a lot of time reading novels and playing games with a sword and sorcery and fantasy themes. I've been reading comics since I was 4. It's also a huge part of my life.

There are many, many other such examples I could give you. I would say it did changed me significantly. I don't know what you mean by 'truly'. It didn't change my genes of course but there are many games/books/movies that completely changed how I see the world.

Employment involving the public: humans are self-centered/self-important to the point of being irredeemable.

Lawrence Krauss for me (YT and books). The deep dives into physics are over my head though.

Nothing you play, watch, listen to, or read will change much in your life because those are consumerist hobbies. Instead of playing, make a game. Instead of watching, make a short film. Instead of listening, compose a music piece. Instead of reading, write a book.

Doodling awful shit on krita and writing on my notebook pretending that I'm Tolkien reborn when I actually can't string more than a few sentences in English when speaking, learning a new language even if at snail's pace. These things feel much more meaningful than consooming pretentious philosophical pieces of media that only tell you what you already know.

 No.229121

A piece of media cannot change one life, it is just a mental image it doesnt influence material reality.
But music and games are one of the rare pleasure i got in life so i'd say yes, it is important.

Truly changed my life? Not really. But the closest I guess would be reading a visual novel where they had an acting club and realizing that I really want to get into acting. I think it might be my calling in life to bring characters to life through acting. It feels like it would be one of the few things that would fill me with purpose and meaning. But guess what, I've done absolutely nothing with that realization. Never tried to find an acting group or practice anything or try to write my own characters or anything. I am so miserably depressed that even something that seems very fulfilling is hard to motivate myself for.

Watching videos of this guy Daniel Schmachtenberger talk about the 'metacrisis', the confluence of various catastrophic risks cascading into complete collapse. Well, maybe not life changing but they've had an impact. Hearing him connect the dots between things I had known about but thought were disparate was sort of eye opening. And the realization of just how fucked humanity is, how there is no breaking out of the downward spiral we are on (even if he insists there is hope to be had).
It changed my life in the sense that I am now much more acutely aware of the absurdity of my every day life. Just seeing all these people go about their routines as if any of it truly matters, pursuing various worthless goals instead of trying to appreciate the last decade of material safety and abundance our species will ever experience. I feel much more justified in taking it easy and not struggling knowing how it will certainly all end soon.

Yes, I watched The Rite Of Spring by Stravinsky performed live when I was 15 and it deeply changed me. It felt so new and brave it convinced me the world is fluid and my anxiety literally melted away that very evening before the orchestra was even done, I started to pursue my own interests very aggressively after, which eventually led me to making meaningful relationships and getting a fulfilling employment.

I don't believe media ever really changes anybody's life. People who feel lost or stuck searching for something to inspire them to change is pretty common, but it doesn't work like that. You're not going to change by just finding the right thing to passively consume, you have to actively initiate it yourself. Searching for inspiration is just a way to pass off responsibility and not do anything.

No. It sounds absurd.

non-fiction can be pleasant

I don't think The Stranger by Camus actually changed my life but I did find it deeply moving.

Tideland by terry gilliam, I didn't enjoy watching but but made me stop doing certain things I was doing and made me a bit less anti-social. One specific thing is after watching it I stopped wearing headphones whenever I went to the store.

That's one specific example that had a sort of clear discrete impact, I have probably been impacted more by other works in other way it's just not as easy for me to say how.

Another one is no longer human by dazai I think, that impacted me in the way most of the story plays out because of his cowardice and sort of desire to appease everyone/mind reading them then deferring to what he thinks other people want. Now I am just clear about what I want and have stopped trying to do that and it's probably made me a bit more of an asshole but I think it's better.

Another thing in general might be jungian stuff and the associated practices around it w/ active imagination but that's more his corpus generally than any one work. I started with modern man in search of a soul I guess.

There are other works I would say have impacted me more but those are the ones I can point to some specific practical change.

My favorite novel is wonderful fool by Shusaku Endo, and that has impacted me and how I approach things more it's less clear how and is more about encoutering the thing infront of you and committing to it and is more of an ideal thing.
Toradora explores that theme in a similar way and I would say also impacted me, so does To the wonder by terrence malick however like I said that's more of a dispositional/perspectival shift than any clear behaiviouristic thing.
