Hey wizzies, I feel the need to classify and understand myself but I'm having trouble with that.

I stay inside when possible but I regularly have to go to appointments (therapy, psychiatry). I am forced out of my shell by obligation. I isolate at home but keep a functional tether to the world via appointments. I do not go outside for fun, I have no IRL friends but some online. I have enough food at home to last me 3 weeks so I don't need to get groceries or accept deliveries. I am very scared when outside. I am NEETing and depend on rehabilitation money.

I am not a hikkimori, what am I?

sounds like Avoidant Personality Disorder. i have it too. basically it's when you can no longer cope with social anxiety and you just start avoiding everything till you're completely isolated and can't deal with people. hikikomori is more of a japanese phenomenon, but it's when the avoidance is so severe you don't even talk to your parents and just stay in your room. that's a more severe condition.

social anxiety disorder (anxious around people) -> avoidant personality disorder (avoids people because of anxiety) -> hikikomori (severe avoidance)

it's also common to develop Schizoid Personality Disorder as you get older, you gradually just lose touch with your emotions, both positive and negative ones and you just feel nothing towards people but you still avoid them because they're like anomaly zones in stalker where weird shit happens and you hate yourself after every interaction. once you lose that connection to humanity, a lot of other stuff stops feeling all that important, career, education, social status in general, you might feel completely fine just living the most minimal lifestyle as a janitor, but your inner life becomes ever so richer and you tend to rely primarily on fantasy to satisfy what little social needs you might have.

and no, there is no "cure".

That's interesting, I'll read it. I've been (mis)diagnosed with SPD but it was later changed to autism.

the way i think about it is like this: as a child, autism or neurodivergence makes it difficult to socialize and predict social situations, therefore you have natural anxiety, if you fail to learn how to properly cope, you end up avoiding which leads to poor social skills, low self-esteem, which leads to more social avoidance. spd comes in at the end when you give up on the social world, whether consciously and unconsciously, and your mind begins to slowly decouple itself from the social world, which as a side-effect lowers anxiety to some degree, but also lowers positive emotions, praise and criticism no longer motivate you, fitting in becomes less and less of a priority, social hierarchies become meaningless and tyrannical, social connections become a burden and there's a general breakdown of social attunement, everything feels fake, exaggerated, dramatic for the sake of being dramatic. you gradually turn inward as the world stops being interesting and you become enamored by your own fantasies and thoughts. that's why you can spend a lot of time alone without much of a problem.

social friction due to being different -> social anxiety -> coping with avoidance -> complete detachment from the social world

i think of them as stages of the "disease", or more like a developmental path of a certain personality type. the initial cause might be different (autism, under-socialization, high sensitivity), but from adolescence to late 20s, people that usually end up here tend to follow this path. spd is basically the endgame. after that, you can still possibly unlock schizophrenia, the more you are focused on your inner world, the less grounded in reality you become, so you might start getting some weird woo-woo magical ideas. i used to be an atheist, but now i believe some shit that old me would probably laugh at.
