He is also belittled and ordered around by the Captain. At the end of the opera, he loses his mind and drowns himself in a lake.

wow what? I didn't say they were Wizards, I said wizard-like (having the psychological and social problems wizards have). I think even in Mishima the characters are sexually experienced but if you read Temple of the Golden Pavilion it practically presages the phenomenon of the hikkikomori. What makes Wozzeck wizard-like is that he has absolutely no agency in his own life. I think some of us could relate to that, the illegitimate paternity notwithstanding.
