For this year:

Dragon's Dogma 2
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes
SaGa Emerald Beyond
Sand Land
Ghosts of Tsushima PC port
Selaco
Elin
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Rumble
Skald: Against the Black Priory
Visions of Mana
Metaphor: ReFantazio
Hades 2

Also various indies that might come out this year but seem like they're in development hell (Hollow Knight Silksong, Gestalt: Steam and Cinder, Isles of Sea and Sky)

Just found out Kingdom Come Deliverance II is coming out by the end of the year. This is such wonderful news. The first game was a masterpiece and criminally underrated. I have been waiting to hear about the sequel ever since. It looks amazing.

maybe give it a shot without hardcore. That takes away the mini map, and fast travel right? That seems like it would be a pain to do. The fun of the game does not come from being lost in the woods without a map. I don't get the appeal of hardcore.

French wizs might have heard of this.

Despite the english name, Slayers Online (SO) is a french-speaking amateur MMO that was created in 2002 by a certain "frostfall" using RPG Maker 2K assets.

It was the poor man's WoW for kids with slow internet or parents who didn't want to pay a sub.
Yes, the MMO was entirely free. NOT freemium, free. You couldn't interact financially with the game even with donations. Obviously because it ripped many assets from RM2K or other games like FF1-6.

The gameplay itself sucked. You had one key to attack, one key to defend, 3 classes that were not balanced at all, and thats about it.

But we liked it because it was an era when online games weren't as ubiquitous as they are now. They were mostly for introverted kids like me who didn't partake in IRL activities.

At its peak (2007-2008 id say) the server averaged 400 online players.

The game admins gave you the possibility to make your own skin (RM2K style). Doing one takes some training but it was accessible. At some point, "skinneurs" as we called them had the possibility to sell access to their skin. This led to the game economy being ruined as the richest people in the game were making too much gold.
I myself created skins and was shocked by how much gold normalfags were willing to put into them, but I didn't complain and exploited this lol.

I also learned HTML4 at 13 just to make a cool description for my character. Didn't have any programming knowledge before that.

The game slowly died out as f2p online games became mainstream, but also because it was hacked so much times as the game's infosec also stayed in the 2000s era (passwords hashed with MD5 etc).

Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

the games were so much better when they weren't meant for normies. i was eagerly reading game magazines, trying to find out what new awesome games were out. my life was such shit, my life was done unto me and i was just a passive victim who couldn't do anything about it but watch how people around me were competing over who can hurt my the most. but in video games i could make decisions and experience things that my nightmare real life would conspire to exclude me from.

now i don't even care to look at new games because all i see is the games being an excuse to teach bullies to respect pronouns, be robbed of data, end user license agreements and microtransactions with slightly better graphics.

I want to make a platformer that combines the best attributes of mario and megaman.
Clearly indicated hit boxes. At this point every pixel of the sprite should be part of the hitbox. No weird nebulous hitboxes that extend far outside of the sprite's graphics.
Momentum. I think this was the most attractive thing about mario.
Squating. The playing should always have an opportunity to dodge attacks and never feel like they have to "eat" damage. If a player is having problems bullet speed should be slowed until they can improve.
Can shoot up or at angles. I may not be asking for a fully analogue control, but it was annoying in megaman how enemies could come in at weird angles and I couldn't shoot them by simply pointing up.
Death in any video game should be as entertaining and least repetitive as possible. You shouldn't rub death into the character's plot as much as you should make the player seek out new and spectacular ways to die.
I can understand the need for fall death in a platformer, but sometimes they make it needlessly complicated I prefer if falls are just a minor setback and I don't have to repeat a bunch of difficult acrobatics only to fall for the 10th time at the part I can't practice for.

I want to make a video game settle during samurai era in japan. like a sekiro/nioh game but more soulslike with lot of japanese yokai. it will have beautiful graphics and interaction. I was thinking about a ronin (you the player) wander and get payed buy locals to exterminate a oni for example.

I wish somebody would reboot the old psx mgs formula of fast paced stealth. It was very polished and those games never had enough areas to explore or encounter the enemy in. Both the ps1 and 2 games only game you little over half a dozen truly stealth screens in the entire game. I don't want the whacky bosses, the movie cutscenes, the pseudo intellectual depth involving long codec calls. I just want fast paced infiltration bit where you choke out guards and use a silenced pistol occasionally while going through interconnected and reoccurring, largely urban areas

then there's that across the canyon that you shoot once, he runs off and dies, gives 11k rune, then you rest at the grace 5 feet away and repeat. getting to the area can be done through Liurnia if you have a non-pirate copy (quest requires invasions)

Had a really good first person hand to hand combat system and a lot of crazy and cool moments that you probably won't get out of any other horror game.

Resident Evil and Silent Hill are obvious, both are good until the 4th game though some people liked SH Origins. There's a 2D pixel-scroller called Ib, I haven't played it nor know much about it so check it out yourself. Both Parasite Eve games. Rule of Rose.

These aren't horror games but may still scratch your itch. Max Payne had nightmare sequences and the game takes place at night and is lonely. Pathologic is a Russian walking simulator with some shooting, taking place in a town dying of a plague.

I watched a streamers review of it and even though he said it's shit I'm tempted to play it anyway because I love mythological creatures and these types of games. He said you fight the same enemies over and over and entering cities makes fps crash so I guess I'll wait for it to go on sale during steams summer sale because it's too expensive atm.

>have you played dd2 yet?
I finished the game yesterday. There are problems inside the cities where the performance tanks really bad, but if you can enable frame generation you can workaround this, outside the cities it runs as it should, so it seems like a problem with too many human NPCs walking around. You could get swarmed by enemies out in the wild where weather effects and lightning, etc. are happening and you won't see the problem occur.

The game is carried by the gameplay and exploration, which is really good, it's a bit more streamlined than the first one so I think newer players will have a better time playing this one instead.

The microtransaction drama was overblown, you can buy camp kits and teleport stones, but those items are also available in game for regular gold and are very cheap, you also find a ton of them in chests and rewards, the cash shop is just there for lazy people. It shouldn't be there in the first place, but it's nothing that really affects gameplay, there are a lot of other games that have much worse cash shops and people seem to not care about them.

Finished playing SMT Nocturne HD Remaster
I wanted to play and actually beat this before SMTV Vengeance came out, I've emulated the game a few times over the years but always quit around the Nihilo Assembly.
The remaster for this game was kinda lazy, I thought people were over exaggerating when shitting on it but no somehow they released it with 30 FPS and the same shitty compressed audio. Luckily there were mods that fixed a lot of the issues.
As for the game itself I mostly enjoyed it, the encounter rate could get annoying at times and some of the later dungeons get really obnoxious with the invisible teleporter but the atmosphere was great throughout and the combat was always enjoyable. I ended up going TDE since I didn't care for any of the Reasons or the teacher.

Pre-rendered backgrounds with 3D assets should've remained until at least the 2010s for certain genres. I'm pretty sure much of the love for the golden age of Final Fantasy (VII- IX) and the early Resident Evil games is due to the highly detailed nature of pre-rendered graphics. The worlds depicted felt more alive and lived in, meaning kids could imagine themselves in it more easily.

It's just a factor that nobody really picks up on when discussing these games. I remember my Grandma watching me play through the Winhill sequence in Final Fantasy VIII and going on about how beautiful the village looked. I don't think you could've had anything comparable in detail in full 3D for at least fifteen years, and not anything as consistently pretty over the course of a full game until around today.

Final Fantasy X was sort of a graphical step down in a sense of so much being plain, flat and ugly. So much so that when you step into a pre-rendered background house, you're taken back by how detailed that is compared to the ugly flatness of the outside.

>And why did the point & click genre die out?
Most were really really bad and even the good ones didn't sell that well.
With very few exceptions they have always had relatively poor sells compared to most other kinds of games.

As for why modern games don't use prerendered backgrounds as much, while you still see them in indie titles on occasion the main reason is the technology has moved on and now you don't have the same hardware limitations that prevent you from actually rendering stuff in the distance instead of faking it with a painting. You can have as many complex polygons within a scene as you want provided your programing is decent. Prerendering has always been a cope for technical limitations.

Resident evil on the harder settings where you're expected to dodge zombies is miserable because of the camera angles. Point and click doesn't really resemble modern games in the way we think of them and often had quite bizarre object interactions that were rarely intuitive. They'd often lock you into encounters where you couldn't even get the necessary items through backtracking without an earlier save state.
