karmically speaking, it's best to be aligned with the truth at any given moment, even if it's negative. illusions bring a small short-term comfort that gets paid back double, along with destabilizing your attunement. why wouldn't you just take heroin all the time? because you have an inevitable comeback and suffer an equal amount, so that in the end you are ironically back to zero. great pleasure swings back to great suffering, and vice versa. i am much more skeptical of unearned pleasure these days and always question when the other shoe is going to drop. and for unearned suffering, i always remember that it evens itself out and that something of equal value is coming. in the end, you are always at zero. the universe likes balance and doesn't let anyone get ahead, there's no way to beat the game.
