What is important is who would win, Xj9 or Shannon? i think XJ9 even if they are similar XJ9 seems to have much more raw strenght, but I haven't seen much of OK K.O.
>there must be a reason why almost all of the cartoons is calarts style oh, is that what the new style is called? >aybe is because of the time they spend on the story I always thought it was our descent into idiocracy
>>44497 It has it's flaws but it is one of the best western adult animated series ever, and literally the only one I can think of that isn't in any way shape or form a comedy.
All cartoons are calarts because it's the popular style for the times. Go back to past decades and you'll find the vast majority of cartoons had a similar artstyle as well.
Avatar was trying it's hardest to be Anime, DC animated movies are attempts at realism and use a lot of Anime shortcuts, they are by no means "cartoony"
>>44523 They weren't created in Japan nor by Japs, so they are clearly cartoons (i.e. western animation). Avatar was even released on fucking Nickelodeon - how more cartoony can it get?
>>44523 So by your standards anything that you think doesn't look bad ain't "cartoony" and no, the animated DC shows and movies didn't imitate anime nor use so called "anime short cuts". I think you have a very narrow view of western animation, cartoons, and what is and isn't good.
>>44524 Have you seen live action shows aimed at anyone younger then 25? Certain trends in cartoons right now maybe shit but there is no comparison when you take a wider view of the media landscape.
>>44522 You also have to remember that was at the hight of "gross out cartoons. For every good looking cartoon there were 3 or 4 trying to be ugly on purpose.
I remember how good was flapjack. The show was cancelled beacuse the writers left the show to make their own cartoons. Things like adventure time, regular show and over the garden wall. Those shows cant compare to flapjack
what do you all think of ren and stimpy??? I always wanted to watch it back in the day (early 90s) except the cable box had nickelodeon scrambled, now I torrented it all
just from the bit I've seen I almost died laughing
>>45733 Ren and stimpy was good cause it had more going for it than gross out though. It had a lot of funny non-sequitur moments like toast man, and some plain funny jokes.
Recenty started watching some old school sci fi stuff. Not going to lie, it's pretty nostalgic. If any of you are interested in watching them, i recommend them.
Ulysse 31 time masters/Les Maîtres du temps Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea/Les Mondes Engloutis
>>45835 >Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea Fuck's sake, I completely forgot about this series, it creeped the fuck out og me as a kid, but I still found it fascinating and watched the crap out of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDDrIgWCYC8 Feels so weird watching it after so many years, remembering things you though were forgotten for more than decade. Still rather unnerving, can't quite put my finger on why exactly, but it was the shit back in the day.
>>45837 >>45835 After watching some of the Spartakus cartoon I immediately recalled this masterpiece as well. Fuck, this shit gave me the weirdest dreams ever, like acid trips but when I was a kid. It was surreal, probably fucked up my psyche or something. Have you seen it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgCxCZNkQ9E
>>45838 Roland Topor’s work like all surrealist crap is very disturbing, sinister even… how did you get to watch this movie as a kid? You may be closer to the truth than you think when you say it fucked up your psyche, even adults shouldn’t watch this abomination. I may sound like a nutjob but this movie felt almost satanic to me, I cannot explain. It is the same with surrealism art in general, it just feels… off.
literally anti normie >The main theme of Momo can be seen as a criticism of consumerism and stress.[1][2] It describes the personal and social losses produced by unnecessary consumption, and the danger to be driven by a hidden interest group with enough power to induce people into this life style. Michael Ende has also stated to have had the concept of aging money in mind when writing Momo.[3] >Childhood is also an important subject in many of Ende's books. In Momo it is used to offer contrast with the adult society. As children have "all the time in the world", they are a difficult target for the Men in Grey: children can't be convinced that their games are time-wasting. The author uses a mockery of Barbie dolls and other expensive toys as symbols to show how anyone can be persuaded, even indirectly, into consumerism.[1][2]
As someone who loves the hollow earth premise for fiction this is really interesting. The only problem I'm too lazy these days to muster the courage to watch a series and this cartoon has two seasons with a bunch of episodes. Curious thing, it's not uncommon I end up reading spoilers for the media I do intend to watch but I'm looking for a plot summary for this whole series and can't find it anywhere. It seems when I want to have a plot spoiled the internet refuses to cooperate. Anyway thanks for posting these.
>>44523 >Avatar was trying it's hardest to be Anime There were tons of bad western anime attempts back then, and Avatar was least try-hard and shameless out of the bunch. Look at Totally Spies, which is weird since the French had a better connection to anime than Americans did. Its biggest influences were Ghibli with some minor ones most wouldn't notice, like Jet being based on Spike from Cowboy Bebop. The majority of the rest of the influences are overly western like Lord of the Rings or the Patriot, or Asian but non-Japanese like Chinese martial arts and war history.
>>46076 >>46078 The CGI planet in the film was called Pandora's Box. Because it was rendered in Blender it looked so good that impressionable youths got sad over irl being vertex lit. Some armchair salesman dubbed the woe "Pandora Syndrome" and urged tabloids to suggest that these youths use up some of their McSickdays to recover.
>>46558 Yes but why do they like it, or claim to like it if it goes against their "principles" also if they like it so much why don't they put effort to make something that actually resembles Anime? OK KO is the worst one that does this even for a cartoon it looks bad, yet it claims to be Anime-like? wtf.
>>46561 Not every single person in western animation is is like whoever you're talking about. >why don't they put effort to make something that actually resembles Anime? Probably because cartoons primarily exist to sell toys to kids and they're drawn in a style that appeals to them, much like most anime are created to sell merch or advertise existing properties.
>>46556 Why does the pic have all these characters together? Johnny Bravo and Schnitzel, or Mojo Jojo and the Saturdays, or Shaggy and Double D etc have eons in between. Flapjack should definitely have gone with the rest of the bottom.
Found this show posted to youtube called Bee and PuppyCat. It is extremely similar to Steven Universe both in art style and story telling but the characters are actually on model more often. Still the writing suffers from the same problems and in some ways is a bit worse. That said it is pretty light and mostly chill so not a bad time passer toon.
>>46706 >>46707 Turns out the main person behind it was also heavily involved in Adventure time so that may explain some of it. Also a lot of the animation was outsourced to a few small Japaneses studios.
>>46572 Western cartoons are made by incompetent faggots and people who actively hate traditional beauty. They have created a culture of rejecting all criticism and depending on cliques rather than talent. It is why everything looks like shit.
>>46714 >and people who actively hate traditional beauty The standard "traditional beauty" is boring subjective trash and nothing good comes out of doing nothing new with art. In fact that's the main problem people have with the modern look of shows, it's all boring, looks the same and completely safe, financially too(very cheap to make and won't scare people off by appearing too different)
>>46717 >In fact that's the main problem people have with the modern look of shows, it's all boring, looks the same I don't know how I made that unclear, and I don't now how it disproves what I've said
In fact, the modern style always has the basic components of what people find "cute" anyway. Small bodies with big heads and big eyes, very colorful and simple. That's basically "traditional beauty" at least when it comes to cartoons, east or west. The AT style considered new and bold once but so was any boring style once too. It's the repetitive nature of the industry that dulls it down. Look at something like EEnE, it gets much more praise in comparison to any modern show but it fits no standard of "beauty". That's such a restrictive concept for any cartoonist unless you're talking about good animation or some pin-up drawing.
I just finished watching the tenth and last season of Adventure Time. I followed the show closely for the first 5 seasons then dropped it for whatever reason. Didn't even know it ended last year. I think it was a decent ending, gave me a feeling of closure at least. I didn't know how important that plot with Betty and Ice King had become to the show, I'm reading the wiki right now. Also didn't know there was humans besides Finn and his dad. I'm sure it's in those 4 other seasons I didn't watch somewhere but I think I'll just read from the wiki for now. Anyway it was nice.
>>46942 Not bad. MC isn't overly obnoxious and the idea that every cart is its own whole world makes possibilities endless. I just hope they don't throw in annoying recurring characters.
>>46942 Maybe it's just because the wizard above mentioned it, but this just seems like a rip off of adventure time. At least the art style isn't 100% noodle limbs and potato smiles.
>>46942 feels too derivative, too 'modern' and like it's 'trying too hard', but I'll give it a chance for at least a few episodes to see if I can get over those feelings
>>44220 well I hope you are still here, trying to promote the kind of healthy discussion you desire
>>46971 Yeah, that was many months ago and I have calmed down and have been trying to practice what I preach by trying to keep discourse on my part civil and the content I post of some sort of quality.
Please tell me how to scratch the neon comedy itch. These faggots cancelled Moonbeam City after only 10 episodes. What a loss for humanity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDF4bMoo0KM
>>46970 >>47003 You know having an animal companion is not an Adventure Time convention. AT is a DnD campaign for giggles, while this is a mystery driven plot. This is like when people will call any game where it's a guy with a sword to be a ripoff of Dark Souls.
>>47004 But her companion isn't an animal, it's that robot thing. The animal is only there for that on train car. It makes me think of adventure time because it looks like it has a modular show formula, a huge universe that will be very unsatisfactorily explored, and a main plot that will seldom be touched upon. But this applies to a lot of things anyway. SU, regular show, and most other modern cartoons do this.
>>47003 The format works well for tv. In that you can catch a ep at any point of a season with few exceptions and still know what's going on and enjoy. It also means that it can be broadcast out of order and watched out of order. Another important factor is they can keep the show going for as long as there is strong demand. It works well for cable tv channels, not so much for binge watching where you want a more linear and focused story.
I feel that Steven Universe is the worst of both worlds in this regard. (I still watch it though)
watching chowder, and I love it, but by golly, do I pity him. I pity him so much.
Firstly, the show is great. I get a lot of chuckles out of the jokes, and I don't usually laugh. I think it's a lot of slapstick, but there's a lot of jokes with great punchlines too. The characters are pretty loveable, and I think Shnitzel and Mung Dall are my favorites, since they make me laugh so much. Shnitzel is the punching bag and brute, so his character works off of Mung's authority and off of being the punching bag for Chowder. Mung dall works off chowder by ALSO being a punching bag. Everyone is Chowder's punching bag, it seems. I remember a lot of jokes around Chowder screwing something up or hurting Shnitzel in some way, but there are jokes centered around Chowder being a kid as well. Truffles though, I don't really think much of her in a joking sense. He marriage jokes are by far the funniest she gets, and she works off of Mung with him being the start of the joke and her line being the punchline. Other than that, she's just an angry fairy that I really don't care much about. Mung Dall also has jokes about his personality, like his love of his mustache, or him trying to be a lady's man. He dresses up as Truffles in the rat sandwich episode, so it's really about him being and acting silly as well using his insecurities and flaws as his jokes.
He can't cook for heck.
He's a scatterbrain. He forgets orders, can't follow directions, and can't listen. It's not even his fault.
His only rival is Panini, who is CRAZY. Literally CRAZY, and she can cook better than him.
His master's rival, Endive, from what I'm seeing in season one, is also crazy, but is as good, or better, than his master, Mung Dall. We never hear about her kitchen exploding or anything going wrong. By now, they've leveled an city, ruined their kitchen multiple times, and just been pitiable.
Panini is also his love interest, and as said before, she is CRAZY. She is obsessed and STALKS the guy. She's delusional, and even though the banana baby was played for laughs or some kind of trick to get near Chowder, she gets way to close to the guy. She tries not to leave his side for so long, and near the end, jumps in his clothes, tries to trick him to kiss her, which would be sexual assault by today's standards, and at the end, fake cries to get sympathy to get him to care. Then, she does it again, and I swear to god, she was definitely fake crying, to actually get him to hug or show affection to her. She immediately snaps out of it. Fake. My sister fake cried, so I know how it is.
I feel so bad for Shnitzel too.
Endive is crazy, and in love, and in episode 17 or 18, he quits, is hired by Endive, and she freaks him out so much by putting on a fake marriage, freaks him out, then freaks out herself for being "rejected", despite him never showing any interest, and then, hits him with a rolling pin, cooks him to "open him up to the possibility to marriage", chases him through her house, and then, pins him to a high balcony where he chooses to jump versus be subjected to any of her BS again. Jesus, and Endive is so nonchalant to it too, saying that every man chooses to jump instead of be with her. It's happened multiple times. The guy's underpaid at either mimimum wage or just above it by then too. Throughout the show, he constantly gets the bad side of the broom, and it all culminates to this episode where all of his work pays off. I keep on re-watching that scene, and it shows how obsessive and crazy both Panini and Endive are. They're one of the same.
Yeah, so great show, but their lives are actually really bad it seems. Pretty wizardly. Sorry if this is incoherent. I didn't want to bother with the first paragraph, which was added in near the end and edited. I could probably put sentences in different places, but I am lazy.
>>47159 what part of that post is mental to you? you must be a visitor from normalfag 8chan or something, get fucked. writing a post longer than a tweet's character limit is not mental illness you anti-intellectual faggot.
>>47103 Chowder is a positively mad show, wild architecture and stories, though the Flash static texture attachment with moving contours gave me nausea.
Here's a breakdown since I can't think of a straight answer.
Chowder - Gets married with Panini at the end, who is a psycho who is obsessed with him to stalkerish levels. Never leaves him alone, but she's obviously a better cook, so she can probably pay the bills. However, he has to deal with her. Chowder himself has ADHD, but that lessens with age. I know. He doesn't really learn any real cooking at the end, but I think he'll be fine unless he literally learned nothing. Like, he's an apprentice teaching another apprentice with like, 20 kids, no joking, and a business that's going to fall in the future. His entire life could have been straightened up in the few years, but the jump cut killed him.
Shnitzel - Marries Endive, who is as crazy as Panini. Probably more, in fact. He looked so distressed when marrying her, and she was also obsessed with him to the point where she cornered him and he decided to jump versus deal with her. Because he later marries Endive, he probably quits his job as Mung's assistant, which is odd since he's painted to be so useful. He probably has to deal with his wife as a job now.
Mung - Nothing much for him, actually. He gets along with his wife well enough, honestly. I truly don't think he and his wife hate each other. I think their jokes are truly in jest. Still, he has to live with his apprentice until he "graduates" to take over the company and destroy it. He cares about Chowder in one scene, but others like the basement scene with the mold where he quickly jests about getting another apprentice. Also, the dragon episode where Chowder eats hot peppers, he replaces him quickly. Still, he SEEMS to care, I think? Chowder only causes destruction in all the episodes, and is so quick to leave his apprenticeship for new found "dreams" or horrible blunders which Mung never corrects him on or scolds him too much. The most punishment he's gotten was no dinner, and he actually tries to give Chowder dinner anyways. Still, I'm sure most episodes, Chowder causes the mishaps. Truly, it's his fault most of the times.
Panini and Endive - They're together since they're both crazy. I pity them both for their mental diseases. Panini is so obsessed with Chowder that she's really, truly 2D in both personality and likeness. She has some personality, like her great cooking abilities, her leadership qualities, her duty to Endive, etc. but seriously, it's more than a crush. The last episode has her stricken to not have Chowder in her life. It's sad since she's so very talented compared to Chowder. She really is going places.
Endive is probably better at cooking than Mung in the "orderly" department, but I am not sure if she's a better chef in other facets. I've yet to see her blow up her kitchen or cause massive destruction. Her apprentice is dutiful and competent. She shows a lot of promise. Even Panini's one downside doesn't get in the way of Endive's work or goals. She has a giant business with a pool, and can afford berries and other luxuries. She's done very well for herself, it seems, and I'm quite happy to see that. Still, she is dreadfully alone. She seems to have a crush on Mung and Shnitzel, and for her, *thankfully, does get married, making her candidacy for this null. Still, as said before, it's possible Shnitzel doesn't enjoy the marriage too much anyways. I hope they do well and nothing breaks her heart. She's obviously super desperate.**
So, in the future, I would say Chowder and possibly Panini who has to deal with him and probably carry. Also, Chowder's apprentice wasting his time, of course. Then, I would say Shnitzel for his marriage and then Endive for the obvious divorce that will happen.
I've still not seen many episodes since then. I've probably only seen three since the initial post, so I can keep you updated on whose life is the worst. Before the final episode though, it would be Mung and Shnitzel. Shnitzel has to clean up the messes Chowder makes, Mung has to deal with his horrible apprentice. Chowder seems too carefree to notice how he's going to fail. I knew when I was going to fail, and I was right.
I'm on season two right now, and the shippings are pretty simple.
Chowder wants no one thus far Panini wants Chowder Ceviche wants Panini
And there's an episode based around Gazpacho where a succubus bullies him because she likes him. Not sure what happens after that, but Gazpacho seems like truwiz material. Never finished the episode though. Guy doesn't have a girlfriend, lives with his mother, owns a stand, and his only friend is really Chowder, a kid.
There's also Endive's romantic interest in Shnitzel in season one's final episode. It will probably carry over to season two as well.
Also, Chowder is such a beast so far. There was an episode where he "flang mud" at Panini to stop her from becoming some kind of president to the Apprentice guild or something. In another episode not too far away, Chowder had to study for the B.L.Ts so he could actually practice cooking, and if he failed, he would never be able to cook again. In that episode, Panini, obviously, was hired to help him study, and he freaked out. During the end of the scene, the madman threw a BOOK at her head. I love it so much. I love this kind of ferocity that he's showing to Panini, and I hope it continues. It's absolute gold. I actually wonder if she'll really break instead of act like she's so astonished and heart broken? It would have been beautiful if I had not know the ending already.
Finished the entire series, so I guess. The Leela and Fry romance seemed pretty forced when I looked into episodes. Fry kinda came onto Leela suddenly in one episode rather than a boiling over and progression that one may expect.
>>47552 I am glad I wasn't the only one to notice that from the trailers.
That said, I still haven't gotten around to watching 3 yet, and I barely remember 2, so I am not really looking forward to this one. Maybe if I do a catch up watch of 2 and 3 I might be a little more hype but I doubt it.
>>47630 I can't get into this character design. It looks so soulless, like random doodles that were made to pass time. Would it kill the studio to add a little white dot to the pupils? Without it the eyes look flat and dead.
>>48629 While I agree, I really wish she used less clips of other reviewers, or at the very least checked the audio levels and equalized everything so they weren't so loud.
Overall I haven't seen much that is interesting of even good coming out of marvel when it comes to their tv animation in the past few years.
I am fan of Disney and Netflix series. I like the Fullmetal Alchemist and the storyline and main characters of this cartoon. But recently I moved to China where netflix was banned. So for watching it I use vpn tool from Veepn.com
>>48859 Oh, that is a little disappointing. A lot of decent cgi movies have come out from China that I have enjoyed, it is ashamed that it doesn't show in their animated series.
I think it's because of the influential appeal of Gravity Falls, despite the fact to say the creator suffered to make that show would be an understatement.
>>48943 The use of squash and stretch to turn static hard objects into soft, rubbery, and most importantly, active/reactive (putting the motion in motion-picture) materials is pretty neat.
>>48943 I think it is funny that my mom loved Betty Boop cartoons quite a bit and went out of her way to show them to me growing up, but when I think about it they were WAY before her time too. I wonder where she first watched them.
This one is "Bamboo Isle" (1932) You can tell they animated using live reference footage for the hula dance.
That show OK-KO had a crossover with Sonic the Hedgehog. Have you seen it?
I am (was) a big Sonic fan; I watched it on that principle and I liked it. I expected it it to be dissapointing but ignoring the flaws which are simply part-and-parcel to modern American (CN?) cartoons (fast and awkward pacing, quirky "tumblr jokes", boring characters) I liked it. I did notice that most of the references are pulled from the Classic-Adventure Era.
>>49130 Surprisingly not bad. I expected worse but it was pretty average with the "guest appearance" of Sonic being done fairly well. While it won't make me a fan of the show as a whole, it does show me it's not total trash like some shows out now.
>>49096 Halfchan has me on "Mao Mao" (kimcartoon.to) which has a pretty good pace of gags, and understands there's zero tension to be had in violent confrontation with monsters of the week, instead using fights as vehicles for more set-ups. They also like to poke fun at other CN properties like Steven U. https://twitter.com/Manga_Kamen/status/1158758117624229888?s=19 And CN-lore, like the intern who scribbled over an original drawing of Spike. Also, giving the deuteragonist a Gears of War chainsaw in the opening credits was pretty ballsy.
But it does rely too heavily on the shonen tropes it mocks, and on the 'facepalm' type of reactions as a response to out of character incompetence or emotional crusades.
There's already so little plot, having it advance based on the characters becoming momentary idiots isn't excusable through 'self-aware' handwaving about it.
so, the Rocko's Modern Life special was more or less what we were expecting- half shameless cash-in, half unironic finger-wagging at people whom I'm increasingly certain only ever existed in the fevered imaginations of the hacks who write this crap.
>>49256 Didn't they jam in some transgender bullshit or something. Remember seeing a video complaining about it, but I didn't really care all that much about it despite liking the original. I actually cared more about HQ remaster when they released the latest box set.
I was gonna watch "Enter the Florpus", but had a bad day/annoying inconvenience. For anyone familiar with Vasquez's work, that's enough to ruin your interest in Vasquez's work (and 99.99999∞% of anything, basically).
For everyone else, just replace "Freezy" with "Florpus".
I saw The Rocky’s Modern Life: Static Cling special.
It was nice and sweet to be honest. Kind of ironic yet fitting how opposite in every level it was to Invader Zim: Enter The Florpus. While one was more a continuation to that exact same universe, albeit with a more sprawling length with all the characters, settings, atmosphere and humor the same despite being amplified twentyfold, Static Cling is a shorter yet more..modern take on an old classic that embraces our times as much as it uses self-deprecation to critique them. I was excited myself to see so many characters appear again that I just barely remembered from what felt like centuries ago since I last saw them from Spunky to those two dinosaur twin things to the talking foot. The whole Rachel thing didn’t really bother me cause I had seen many other cartoons that dealt with LGBTQ WAAAAAY before it even became a movement (though, in the case of South Park or maybe Family Guy, that didn’t mean I was SUPPOSED to growing up). What did shock me, though, was just how much heart there was in this special compared to how I remembered it. It's almost as if all the characters were 20% more emotionally layered this time around, especially the Bigheads. But it fit in a special with the central theme being change.
>>49478 looks pretty bad, it being so crips and clean makes the kistakes to jump first and center, it was much less notiseable in low resolution drawn in cels.
>>49560 That's an exception to the rule, and is not that good looking really, is quite an extravagant and simplistic design. It stands out because most cartoon females dont even have tits.
>>49558 Because cartoons are seen as being strictly for kids, or adults that act like kids. So having attractive succubi offends the right wing moralizers and the left wing feminists. So it’s better to just avoid it. Also most cartoons aim for a caricature style, which does not lend itself to attractive characters in general. Even the one you posted, bobs burgers, has no attractive men or succubi. It’s just the style.
Found out the maker of 12 forever is a pedo. Which honestly isn't that surprising. I wounder how much it will effect the show, or know that the creator is outed will they get fired or the show canceled.
Watched the forth (and final) season of star vs. the forces of evil.
Man, just when it felt like it figured out what it wanted to be the whole show is over. It was a fun ride but I am left feeling unsatisfied with the way things wrapped up.
You know, when I saw every episode of The Loud House which came out at the very start of 2017, I thought it was okay. Not good, not bad, but okay. The reason I didn’t keep on watching it is because I had grown so bitter and overcritical of cartoons since 2011. I just wasn’t the same avid teenager who thought the spirit of Foster’s Home, Ed Edd n Eddy, etc. Lied in all cartoons anymore even if it did. After watching the first episode of Hilda I felt ALMOST the same way. It was good, don’t get me wrong. And as much as my heart wants to watch more, my head knows my limits won’t make this work out.
To put it in perspective, there’s a rare episode of Family Guy which I really liked and even connected with where Stewie and Brian start a radio show called “Dingo and the Baby”. Normally I would think I have this show’s formula down to a science enough to predict it would end with something like either them being kicked out or even something slightly formulaic like one of them leaving and having the show fail anyway. Instead it just ends on Brian realizing he went too far with some comments (as far as I can remember because it was about a decade ago that I saw this episode) while hosting said show and voluntarily gives it up.
This is how I feel with Hilda: it’s too innocent and goodhearted of a show for someone like ME to get into, especially when I’m not even the right demographic (despite reading the graphic novel “The Bird Parade” a year beforehand). As Muse and The Red Hot Chili Peppers would put it let’s just say “I hail from the dark side” and “dark necessities are a part of my design” so even if I do manage to be a good enough fan to continue watching the show despite those traits, I can never be a perfect one.
I feel my time came and went with these kinds of shows quite a while ago.
>>49657 Those look like they came from the same people who worked on Superjail! and Metalocalypse, can I watch, I dunno, Bojack Horseman or something similar (except Rick and Morty) instead?
>>50067 Gee, maybe John Kricfalusi will get better in time…Cos you know, the general public has let bygones be bygones for things that have been out in the open since 2013 yet they never actually gave a solitary care for since then.
>>50070 The thing about John K is that he is talented, but he should never, ever actually be in a position of leadership or the one in charge of anything or bad things happen.
The "other scandals" I tend not to care that much about because they don't usually effect the final product and in all honesty I don't really give a shit about the people/drama behind the scenes when it comes to animation. It is just clear that John K needs supervision to actually get shit done, stay on schedule, and not get up to sick monkey business with his underlings.
>>50072 That I can agree on: he's basically Canada's own Christian Bale in that department, despite Bale acknowledging he has no charisma. (or maybe just taking the piss on what happened a decade ago, idk)
Why do adult people like this poorly made toddlershow? I can't understand sensible people who apparently watch lots of Anime being fans of something this stupid, to the point of "cosplay" for this cartoon and going to dumb conventions and panels.
What's wrong with people today? Do they claim to like it solely for their political stance?

>>50159 I used to watch that show. 4 years ago or so. The first half of season 1 is good, then it drops off heavily. The writers ruined the show trying to pander to the degenerate audience, it's all wet-dream fanservice now. I saw some clips the other day of the new recent movie-series-modern-episodes and I'm glad I lost interest.
>>50159 The first season is very good, lots of FoP style shenanigans and a surprising amount of body horror. The backgrounds are also absolutely stellar, especially when dealing with the non-human environments.
As many say though it's just a vehicle for weird character interactions now that the protag is invincible.
>>50159 Yeah, the early seasons seemed to be simple and from the heart, which made it sort of endearing. Since then, it seems like they have done a lot of pandering and fanservicey stuff, and have attempted to incorporate a "serious" story, instead of just having quirky one-offs. It has lost much of its charm.
Why are cartoon characters, generally, in the ugly to extremely ugly spectrum where as anime characters are in the apparent pinnacle of beauty( i haven't seen any other media that comes close, much less surpasses it in this aspect)?
>>50193 Read the thread. This has already been asked and answered.
If you are too brain-damaged from stupid outsider memes then I will summarize.
3 main reasons. 1.Ugly/beauty are subjective 2.they are mainly for children and made by a culture that doesn't like mixing sexualized content with stuff for kids 3.simpler cartoon art style is functional in that it is made for constant movement without breaking the bank, unlike anime where they spend most of the run time barely moving unless the budget is blown the fuck out.
>>50194 So on one hand beauty is subjective, but on the other hand cartoon characters can't be made beautiful because it would be too arousing or something, and because it interferes with animation, meaning that they actually aren't made to be beautiful in the first place.
Making characters cute, as they are in kid's anime, doesn't mean they are "sexualized"–what a weird thing to say. It's also a big exaggeration to say that anime barely moves, or it's even like a dogma where people believe that it's just not possible to have motion unless the characters look like potatoes, or unless there is some crazy budget, because everything is magically solved with money.
>>50339 You got all the answers you are getting. I ain't trying to argue with a idiot that isn't even interested in the topic of the thread. Go to one of the many anime threads on /jp/ instead rather then try to pick fights here.
>>50346 I'm not the one who posted >>50193, and I'm not an idiot just because you have no rebuttal to what I said. And for something that isn't part of the topic of the thread, anime sure has been brought up lots of times.
>>50339 Part of the problem is that the high production value animation that used to be done for feature films and such got completely gutted by 3d animation movies. For some reason this didn't really happen in Japan, but I cant tell you why.
Extremely high quality animation like in the Prince of Egypt or The Road to El Dorado just isn't done any more since it is just too costly compared to 3d stuff which seems to do just as well or even better in the box office. And like many fields, if you stop employing the best of the best animators then the general quality of the animations produced by the rest of the industry tend to go down as well. Now the industry is dominated by inexperienced and less expensive animators just out of school who don't have the skill that the old masters did.
>>50348 Technological advances have made 2D animation cheaper, and if you look at Disney's budgets over time you can see that they started climbing in the 90s when 3D animation started being used, and once the movies went full 3D the budgets increased even more. But apparently 3D movies make so much more money that the extra cost is worth it.
The level of 2D animation in television was always poor to mediocre, and almost everything started being outsourced away to Asia in the 80s.
Asking why 3D didn't replace 2D in Japan is kind of like taking for granted that 3D replaces 2D, but from what I've been able to gather it happened in America because of the following (possible) reasons: 1. Toy Story and Shrek were big hits and something new, 2. a lot of low quality 2D movies came out, 3. 2D didn't make as much money as 3D, 4. the more flexible nature of making 3D animation may have been attractive to the suits, 5. Disney was already using so much 3D that they thought they may as well go all the way, 6. 2D animation was stale and stuck in a rut, and increasing doses of 3D animation were needed to proceed forward, 7. even video games in America dropped hand-drawn graphics and 2D gameplay in favor of 3D as soon as they could, suggesting that there's some general orientation towards 3D.
In anime, 3D didn't offer much that was new. It didn't expand anime to new audiences or introduce new types of storytelling or enable many things that weren't already possible with 2D techniques (that are still in use today). They have a very large and well-developed 2D industry that has great synergy with other forms of 2D media like manga, and the industry is so interconnected and reliant on freelancers and outside companies that it's a lot easier to work with 2D animation. The Japanese also prefer the aesthetic of 2D over 3D, 3D is more expensive too.
>>50351 I don't think the budgets have really kept up with inflation, and they certainly haven't kept up with cost of living in the large cities that animation studios used to be. Also, asia and Korea in particular have had huge increases in the standard of living in the last 30 years and there really has not been an equivalent emerging replacement that that kind of animation could be sent to.
>>50353 Adjusting for inflation, 2D movies (with or without extensive use of 3D) have still been cheaper. Disney's last 2D movie in 2011 cost only $34 million and apparently used no 3D animation, or nothing significant. It may seem like 3D must be cheap because computers make everything easy, but it takes time and money to develop all that technology (they don't just use off-the-shelf programs), create all the assets and animations, and have the computing power to render it all.
Even if Korea has become more expensive for TV shows, animation is still sent there because it's cheaper than doing it locally, and budgets are still anywhere from two to ten times higher compared to Japan. A lot of that money goes towards overpaying voice actors, because heaven forbid that someone in the entertainment industry has to settle for a middle class income.
>>50353 >and there really has not been an equivalent emerging replacement that that kind of animation could be sent to Wrong. You don't pay attention to industry news I see. Taiwan, Hong Kong, Australia, the Philippines, India, and Hungary have almost always been used too, with currently India and the Philippines being popular currently with production companies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outsourcing_of_animation
I finally know why it’s harder to make cartoons nowadays:
When we were young, and by default, in the more archaic past, we looked up to our favorite shows and wanted to create something like that: professional, impressive, yet still fun.
But as we got older we learned more about real life, which obviously isn’t anything like cartoons back then portrayed it.
What’s worse is that given how cartoons were made by adults when we first saw them, we come to a conclusion which sadly only arrives to us once we’re no longer children: our childhoods were NOTHING like cartoons were back then neither.
We want to create cartoons the same way the child inside of us would have, but in doing so we want to feel like children again: free of crippling pressures, heavy responsibility, knowledge of the evils in the world, etc. Which, in nature, is impossible.
We don’t have that spark anymore, and if we do, it doesn’t come to us as easily.
Think of it like Terminator 2, where the entire movie leads up to that scene where John Connor orders the T-800 not to go: that’s our childhood and adulthood leading up to one another in our lives.
We start out overpowered and naive when we look at how easily we have this abundance of strength, taking it for granted until our own personal lives (as is the case with Sarah and John Connor in the movie) progresses. But once that scene finally comes, much like the T-800, our adulthood, we can't "relate" with John Connor, our childhood, anymore.
Even if we want to.
If that doesn’t make sense then there’s a quote by Stephen King which works perfectly as a TL; DR type of deal:
“If being a kid is about learning how to live, then being a grown-up is about learning how to die.”
Without blabbering on under the pretense MY words matter I will just say this: given everything I went through this decade, this episode hit way too close to home.
The new Green Eggs and Ham show is actually super good as far as animation quality. Everything else about it is actually alright to pretty good too. I haven't watched it all yet but from what I have seen so far I can totally recommend it if you are a fan of good animation.
For the first time since that dreadful year I feel like I can appreciate cartoons again without being forced. Like I've been given a second chance to feel. To be in a proper fandom without obsessing too much. Almost to love again, even, and you want me to stop?
>>50861 Yeah, it is pretty good and I wish the team behind it the best in getting their pilot picked up. You don't see that level of passion and hard work every day.
Finally got around to watching what is left of Steven Universe. Felt pretty anti-climatic so far. Maybe the movie will feel like the real ending to the show. I will reserve full judgement until then.
>>50935 Watched the movie. I totally didn't cry from Spinel's back story. No you cried. These aren't tears ok I cried a little, shut up
But really it was a nice way to wrap everything up. She songs were a bit meh, and I find it funny that even in the movie they couldn't stay on model and had animation errors all over, but I actually enjoyed it and see it as a fitting send off to the series.
have you heard about the COPPA law? Do you think is gonna change the way animation is consumed on the internet forever? the agreement was that the FTC will periodically scan Youtube for child's content, now ALL animation is considered for children.
I think corporate animation will be unaffected since they have their own platforms but independent animation will completely die sicne, how else are you gonna store all those niggabites of content?.
>>50951 The people who make videos don't actually collect anyone's data illegally so the FTC going after video creators with the law is super retarded and probably won't hold up in court. Other then that it is a wait and see kind of thing to see how the platforms react. Web animators might just find another place to post their stuff, or just make their content edgier.
If I ever complained about and harassed a thread due to disliking the very topic of the thread this much despite having post deleted I would have long since been banned by now.
I wanted to keep my radically subjective thoughts to myself on this show. But since it ended 3 years ago, what the hell?
I knew Wander over Yonder was bad the moment I tried to stomach the first episode. So many things just rubbed me the wrong way from the annoying intro song, the overabundant flash lunacy (which would go on to be done better in Hilda and even in his previous show, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends) and the fact that, contrary to the beautiful b&w illustrations Mr. McCracken had in his deviantart, Wander is worse than MY personal idea of a Gary Stu.
I understand it was a kid's show, let alone one on Disney channel at the time. But I guess it was too much of me to expect Inuyasha level quality since kids at the time probably saw more complex anime by then (and I'm not talking about Avatar: the last airbender, trust me) and instead get everything I ever hated from that same Foster's home condensed into more than half those seasons.
Keep in mind I love Mr. McCracken's work and am a big fan of him: any person who draws clear yet proud influence from The Little Island by Richard Williams is always good in my book. So of course it would break my heart to see him go from being masterfully artistic and even emotionally resonant (especially at PPG and FHFIF's best) to what essentially feels like Dragonball Z adapted haphazardly for Playhouse Disney.
In my opinion maybe McCracken should've just tried pitching the show to any other network that wasn't as strict as Disney (nor as potty humor oriented as Nickelodeon).
>>51314 I watched a few random eps but never really got into it myself. It was well made from a technical standpoint but I didn't find any of the characters or stories/writing interesting from what little I did see so I more or less just ignored it.
Sonic Official put out another 2D Sonic animated sketch following Mania Adventure and Team Sonic Racing Overdrive.
I didn't like the previous ones because I found the style and humour to be cheap and cliche, but I was surprised with how enjoyable this one was. I now look forward to seeing more of them in the future.
Been dipping my toe in Chinese animation again. While a lot of it is pretty crap, especially when it comes to story telling, there does seem to be diamonds to be found.
>>51745 Not that guy, he hates ugly cartoons and worships Anime, Chinese Anime has a name and it's actually like those "free" mobile games in Animation form making it better than 90%of Western cartoons.
As a former hardcore fan of a cartoon, seeing a casual fan say "I want to get it on with THIS character" is like hearing them say "I'm just going to have a hamburger in the most esteemed 5-star gourmet restaurant in the world", which just makes me glad I abandoned the fandom if they care that much nowadays, I guess.
>>51753 >white snake and wukong Jesus do the chinese care about anything other than folk stories? Or do they just rely on america to make movies that aren't chinese folk tales for them?
>>51759 >it's all I've ever seen come out of china. Isn't that more of a self imposed problem since it is just what you have seen and not representative of all that the country produces?
It would be like me stereotyping all Italian films as horror films since the only Italian films I have watched have been horror films. They make plenty of other kind of films just like China has plenty of other sources for their stories in animation.
>>51761 That's not really the tone I read from your post. If that was actually your intent all along then you really need to work on how you communicate that intention. But I doubt that was actually your intention.
>>51753 I meant the "Donghua" which basically means far east or something like that or something coming from the east. what you posted is Chinese cartoons.
Decided to check out Gary and his Demons Honestly it is a alright show for a lower budget adult cartoon. Love the pacing. Not too fast but it does flow very nicely so it is a easy binge watch.
I hope it gets picked up for a second season but I ain't holding my breath.
Got memed in to watching this and was pleasantry surprised by the first season. No controversial, political, or otherwise preachy anything so far. The humor has been good and there are some memorable interchanges. Some of the characters are obnoxious but there are enough of them that the bad ones don't ever dominate screentime. Anne sometimes uses words or does things that a 13 year old crystal cafe user would do today but it's not delivered as if the writers are trying to make her relateable but rather as someone who doesn't belong.
There are no witches so far, but Maddie gave me a boner
>>49581 This is the first time I see a female cartoonist in this kind of trouble. Chris Savino went to jail for harass some female coworkers, and the guy of Clarence had some kind of psychological problem and refused to take his medication. He touched the butt of another female in an elevator while he was singing they may be giants.
When The Mickey Mouse shorts used flash animation/Toonboom/etc they were applying a style of post-modern animation (tweening and other methods I'm unfamiliar with) to a Fleischer era style that felt lacking in animation in itself compared to Mickey's later incarnations that had more fluid animation after they lost the dark pac-man eyes altogether. Meaning they were reviving a classic style that was dead enough to be considered public domain.
I personally see it as akin to when the Nippon Television Network Corporation of Japan restored The Sistine Chapel in 1980. This in the sense that whether it looks as good as the original or not (after the restoration) it still didn't look as good now as it did during the first years after it was made anymore. So as long as they do an extremely good job it's still going to be worth marvelling at all the same.
The New Looney Tunes Shorts, however, dont have this feeling: even during the Fleischer era their animation was clearly better than the aformentioned Mickey Mouse shorts of said time, so they deserved to look better than your average Newgrounds cartoon.
Don't get me wrong: I love this sort of animation, albeit on stuff like Blockhead by Michael Swain or anything Greasy Tales has made as their brand of humour feels more suited for this look and feel.
The aesthetic of The Looney Tunes shorts, however, would look better if they were animated by someone of either Zeurel or Paul Ter Voorde's quality if Harry Partridge is a pipe dream.
Why cartoon Network is moving some shows to HBO+? I wanted to see The Infinity train Again, but I discover is in HBO. Now the Channel only has Teen Titans go, Mao Mao and Thundercats Go. Mao Mao is ok, but, is not as good as the infinity Train. If that thing is an online Platform, would be easier to pirate the shows?
Modern cartoons are so soft compared to the old ones. Things like Courage, Invader Zim(forget the quirkiness and you have a one of the darkest shows on nickelodeon) Ghostbusters New Generation and Ren and Stimpy, wouldn’t never see the light if they came today.
Why Sym-Bionic Titan was cancelled? I heard it’s because of the supposed toys the series have to sell for being on air, but I don’t remember seeing any titan related toy. It’s a shame the show was cancelled. It was way better than adventure time and steven universe. The last thing I heard it was about sony trying to buy the series, but I don’t know if they did it.
>>54220 That isn't really true. The only reason why there aren't too many shows with similar edge is because of who the current batch of popular creators are. Network executives and the like have no problem with shows with a bit of edge if they think it will sell. Especially on streaming services where you have tons of fully edgy and unrestrained animated programing for a slightly older audience.
My only real issue/constructive criticism is that although I'm aware it's about AG and therefore his main focus, having it be a duet with Cherri Bomb instead of it just featuring her makes her spunky scenes feel off balance with Angel Dust's more serious tone.
But that's just me. Everything else checks out. 6.5/10
Why the Simpsons are not funny anymore? I tried to watch an episode where some gay friend of the grandpa and he kisses each other, and another where Lisa leave the U.S. It was the most boring episodes I ever seen. Almost all of the episodes are about Lisa being better than anybody on the planet, Homer being a bad person for not paying Lisa´s education at a better school, Bart doing pranks just for the sake of it and Marge being caught by every new trend. Like that time where she disguised herself as a drag queen just for sell tupperware. ¿What happened? This show was one of the funniest ever made, now, I think they make the most bad episodes trying to get cancelled
¿What happened with Klasky-Csupo? The last thing I saw from them was Rugrats Grown up, and that was during the 00s. I heard they were making a movie of real monsters, but it was too dark for kids, and monster inc was released recently, so they decide to make a rugrats movie. And also, what happened with a.k.a. Cartoon, the studio of Danny Antonucci, creator of Ed, Edd n Eddy? The guy is a genius. The show doesn’t have a single episode that doesn’t make laugh. The best comedy cartoon Cartoon Network will ever have.
>>44214 Western cartoons have been shit since the early 2000's. The shit I grew up watching was a milion times better than the low effort garbage they make nowadays.
>>55238 I have no idea what the hell you are talking about. The only rule here is the board rules. If you want to talk about a cartoon you like then just talk about it. At worse some jackass that needs attention might pick with you (which you can report) and at best you will find that others share your enjoyment and wish to discus the matter further.
>>55245 He’s referring to my little pony. And that’s not an unreasonable question considering how reviled it is across much of the internet, specifically 4chan.
>>55494 As someone that actually like Star trek I'm not watching that show. The level of contempt that the creators of the show have for both classic Star trek and the original fan base is palpable. I don't need to waste my time on something made by creators who hate me and the things I like. It's like watching a modern artist take a giant shit on a masterpiece by a Renaissance artist that I favor then expect me to praise them and pay them for it.
¿Why a part of the modern cartoons try so hard to be an anime? Look at Steven Universe. Almost everything in the show is an anime reference. The same happens with the owl house. Luz looks like one of the succubi from Magical Doremi, and there’s a character that look like a monster from Junji Ito.
>>55925 They do so not out of any bad intention. It is because the creators grew up with anime and love anime so it comes out in their work in ways both large and small.
Most animators were inspired to become animators somehow, and the current front line of animators were inspired by anime.
I think it is more of a good thing then a bad thing because they mean well and they aren't trying to be something it's not. Only taking inspiration and occasionally making small references.
>>55933 >oh I worked HARD on this shitty squiggle-armed doodle, now pay me 100k this is why western toons are shit, your animators are entitled unskilled undisciplined children.
>>44214 Exactly, cartoons today rely more on their stories, conversely, notice how older cartoons have original art styles like Flapjack but almost no history.
>>55939 >original art style like flapjack Flapjack's art style isn't original. It's the same noodle limbed bullshit that adventure time started. However the nautical themes and occasional 1800s scrimshaw designs are unique and interesting. I just wish the whole show was animated like that.
>>55940 It was the first one, and it was original by the time. It's like Gumball, it was original, then all the show taked the simple heads without the nice 2D/3D mix and the calart style was born
>>55939 Flapjack had a story though. These days, cartoonists want to be praised for "complex storytelling" they stole from toonami's 2005 era shounen lineup. Flapjack had a great team of artists and tons of mixed media going on it, but it's pretty much dismissed as a gross out cartoon from an era of CN everyone ignores.
>>55941 I like comedies about cynical losers like Regular Show and Gumball, but I haven't found any new series to watch in the last 5 years. Im mostly stuck with watching reruns of old toons i liked
It has been a while since I have enjoyed almost everything about a animated movie this much. The look, the animation, the story, the performances, everything just hits the spot. Highly recommend it. 5 out of 5.
>>56376 >released in theaters in the UK >streaming services everywhere else It's the current year and Disney is still the only company that can make theatrical american cartoon films these days; horrible ones at that, what happened to the old Disney studios? Fuck pixar
>>56378 >Most theaters are closed down in america right now But not in the UK? Wouldn't be surprised if the theaters still being closed is just a psyop so more people buy the Mouse's streaming service.
>>56378 >this appeals to my dick That is a bit cringy bro >What was good about it? Everything about it was executed competently. I am not good at writing reviews or anything. It's good because I can't find fault with anything in it besides me not caring for some of the music I guess.
Movie is called Ginger's Tale (2020) Story was a bit of a mess but the animation was mostly nice. Better then I expected but not really a great film mostly due to the writing and it just being all over the place when it came to just about everything. I wonder if I will even remember watching this movie a year or two from now. It just doesn't feel like it left any lasting impression on me beside maybe a few ideas from it would be cool to add in a D&D campaign or something.
Whatever, like I said, I ain't good at reviewing things and besides this thread is just about done. Check it out if you want to see what the Russians are up to when it comes to feature length animation I guess, or just bored and in the mood for something a little different.
Anne Hunter is probably the best episode in Amphibia, I was actually surprised by some of the jokes and music, really well done. I'll watch The Owl House now or maybe rewatch Invader Zim.
