I'm planning to watch this. People have been talking a lot of positive things about it. I saw the trailer and it doesn't really seem like my cup of tea but the it's getting so many praising reviews I'm considering it. Anyone here watched it?
>>46355 It's about German scientists doing weird experiments on people and turning them into zombies during WW2, apparently. That's what I got from the trailer anyway. Seems to be very action-oriented which is the aspect I don't quite like.
>>46360 Its alright if you enjoy movies about people bonding with their animal companion. Decent animal movie. Though be warned that the movie is kinda boring for the first 20 or so minutes before the main character meets the wolf.
>>46353 I saw an Asian movie a few years back. I think it might have been Chinese (it was dubbed). It had amazing aesthetics, it was about royalty and took place in a royal palace. It was all gold, colorful glass panels and very beautiful surroundings overall. I don't remember the plot, just that some intrigue occurred between the various family members, where someone tried to poison someone and at the end there were armies and ninja assassinations or something.
Has anyone seen this movie? Does anyone know its name?
I've watched going in with the same optimism as you did, and I can say it was an utter disappointment. It was slow, with lame action, the climax looked like the ending scene of a ps2 game, don't waste your time with it.
I remember this. It's one of the top films that made me realize how often violence, sex and shock value act as cheap substitutes for actual mature themes and content in the hands of hacks like Miike.
Watched this recently. Liked everything about it, really. It's about a crew of astronauts and cosmonauts who go on a mission to Europa to prove definitely there's a liquid ocean under the ice and to look for traces of life.
>>46443 >>46445 Really now? Of all the the manga they can adapt, someone in charge choose fucking Hepatica. The live action seems to not able to deliver the same weight thought. The 3DPD acting of pretty faced idolshit just don't have the same edgyness of the manga. If you can stand it, you may want to check out the manga.
>>46443 >>46445 >>46449 I wish they make main characters as males having revenge the only one I know is only a short scene in a series where he's just a side character
>>46453 >>46441 It's a mixed bag, I'm assuming on purpose. Vampyr and The Last Laugh is pretty damn good. Then you have Evangelion and Star Wars in there which doesn't seem to belong at all.
Sounds like "The King and I" starring Jodie Foster and some chink whose name I can't remember at the moment (probably Chow Yun Fat or however its spelled).
Just watched Unbreakable. Very interesting approach to the superhero genre since you don't know its a superhero movie until the very end. Enjoyed it more than I thought. Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson are great on this. I feel like this movie hold ups even better now that Hollywood is cluttered with superhero movies.
>>46544 I really hope he doesn't fuck up Glass. Unbreakable was really good and split was surprisingly good too. If Glass ends up being shit I will be a bit mad.
Re-watched the time-travel science-fiction film 12 Monkeys. During this viewing I have considered the villain, a loner Virologist who unleashes a doomsday plague to wipe out humanity, to possibly be a warlock. This made the film that much more fun to watch.
I think, Dr. Railly, you have given your alarmists a bad name. Surely there is very real and very convincing data that the planet cannot survive the excesses of the human race: proliferation of atomic devices, uncontrolled breeding habits, the rape of the environment, the pollution of land, sea, and air. In this context, isn't it obvious that "Chicken Little" represents the sane vision and that Homo Sapiens' motto, "Let's go shopping!" is the cry of the true lunatic?
And at the very end a succubus astrophysicist from the future appears. It seems to be left up to interpretation whether she is there to stop the warlock, or if she is a witch, there to help the warlock complete his mission to fly around the world with his vials of doomsday virus.
I almost forgot how it feels like to watch a good film. My advice is to see this without knowing anything beforehand and see how the whole thing unfolds.
How much time do you give a film before giving up on it? I'm currently watching a bunch of movies I downloaded a bit randomly and some are really not worth it but I'm unsure how long is a fair chance. 10 minutes? 20? 5? I dunno
The music is beautiful and so very well used. The art is absolutely gorgeous, and it's just really dark and fantasy-like. There are giant trees, giant skeletons, a giant town with this weird giant machine, etc.
Story-wise, nothing is explained. Honestly. There's only like, a few pieces of dialogue, and we don't even know the two main characters' names. We don't get anything explained to us lore-wise too. It's pretty dark-soulish. I don't mind that though. It was a beauty to watch.
I recommend it. It's only an hour and 11 minutes long too. Watch it in the dark too for more atmosphere. It already has a ton of it, but the darkness makes it even more atmospheric.
Here's the link to the version I saw. That being, it's dubbed.
Watched Ralph Breaks the internet, the new Grinch movie, and the first 10 minutes of Nutcracker, the 4 Realms (which I promptly slept though).
I of course loved the new Ralph movie. It was well animated, well paced, and well written. The feels centering around the changing of friendships were unexpected but well done, if a bit on the nose some times. The references weren't too cringey which I was worried about, but it will date the movie years down the line unlike the first. While I liked the first one better this sequel didn't disappoint. If you liked the first, and/or modern Disney in general, then give it a watch.
The Grinch was ok. If I was to sum it all up as shortly as I could I would say this version is soft. The look, characterization, motivation, and relations with others throughout the film were in general much softer. He never felt truly grinchy. For fuck sake, he didn't even dislike Christmas all that much. He just had a case of the sads from being lonely all the time It was odd in that it often felt both rushed and like it was stalling for time. I didn't really like the pacing of this one. The animation was quite nice, and the visuals were all good. All the newer songs and original to the movie music sucked ass and took me right out of the movie. I will say that the one thing I like in this version over the live action version is that there was no stupid romantic sup-plot and Cindy Lou Hoo was pretty cool in this version. In most other regards I actually prefer the live action movie over this version. Which is saying quite a bit. It isn't that this new movie is bad, just kind of bland. Of course the original animated special is better then both of them IMO but it wasn't feature length so whatever.
Nutcracker had pretty colors but wasn't too bright. Lots of dark scenes. Music was pretty good and quite relaxing. Was a great nap, would sleep through again.
>>46578 IIRC the director was going through a tough time when he made the movie. I don't think he really clarified the meaning of the movie (IIRCG he even said there was no real meaning), but there are tons of symbols throughout the movie (judeo-christian and otherwise)… not to spoil anything, but listen to the words of the boy very closely(yes, he may be an edgelord) and then pay very close attention to scenery at the end. I watched it subbed originally.
>>46586 >I don't think he really clarified the meaning of the movie (IIRCG he even said there was no real meaning) i dont think that matters, it's not like anyone will watch that expecting a normal anime, if they do they are pretty dumb. every frame of the movie is like a painting and is worth watching because of the interesting art alone, and you can make whatever you want from it without being wrong
>>46578 I watched it yesterday after reading your post, and enjoyed it. It made me feel sort-of lethargic afterwards. I'll probably watch it again sometime to get a better understanding.
>>46584 I saw Ralph too and for me it was boring, emoji-lite movie, pretty much everything reversed of what you said about it ..at times you get the sense it’s more of a wild collage instead of a perfect puzzle. From scene to scene, things are regularly linked in ways that feel forced or without proper motivation, and the result is a narrative that, at times, feels very disjointed and uneven.
…10 different versions of the film were screened internally before the final one was settled on. The final film consists of 45 sequences, which were selected out of 153 sequences that were created. And to get to those 153 sequences, 7,883 versions of those sequences were considered, made up of 283,839 total storyboards.
>>46594 Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it. >10 different versions of the film were screened internally before the final one was settled on. And to get to those 153 sequences, 7,883 versions of those sequences were considered, made up of 283,839 total storyboards Where is the quote from? I would wouldn't mind learning a bit about the production of the movie.
>>46615 Since you didn't say what you like or in the mood for I will just list random action films that come to mind The Matrix Blade Death Wish Sidekicks Rumble in the Bronx John Wick Hardcore Henry The Protector Blood and Bone Rush Hour Unleashed Gangs of New York
Watched Fist of Legend and currently watching Return of the Fist Of Legend an I had to stop the movie and google this bullshit propaganda going on in this movie. Movie Chinese combatants in WWI in France in direct combat roles. I called total bullshit, paused the movie and looked it up. Yeah, this is just Chines propaganda and totally bullshit that isn't even remotely true. At most all the Chinese did in France during WWI was act as super cheap laborers that had nothing to do with combat and were far removed from front line combat. But the real shame is this one doesn't have Jet Lee in it like the first one.
There's nowhere to go from here. Spoilers ahead: they killed the alien race that created humans, revealed who designed the Aliens, changed the whole focus of the ALIEN franchise to be about evil androids and effectively driven the whole plot into a corner.
I think they're done. I read it was a financial disappointment so on top of being a mediocre movie people don't even care about it anymore. The first Alien is one of my favorite movies ever but it's hard to make sequels where you have to reveal stuff for plot development. One of the most appealing things about the first movie is the unknown. Now we know everything and it sucks.
Reykjavik 101. I think it's a western version of welcome to the NHK. MC is a neet on neetbux. Does drugs and have divorced parents. Father is a drunkard and mother a lesbian. In the end he tries to KYS but decided to move on.
I've been watching Batman The Animated Series. So far so good. I remember watching it when I was 17 years old and having a good time, but now I get a better understanding of what the stories are trying to say.
>>46726 >Whiplash >Blue Ruin >Green Room >Good Time >You Were Never Really Here (no sex despite the plot centering around sex trafficking rings) >Martyrs
Off the top of my head. Your mileage may vary on the quality of these, however.
>>46728 The closest you'll get to politics is the main characters doing a cover of video related as a joke to piss off the nazis in the bar. Outside of that, no. If the plot got rewritten to where the neo nazis were just a typical gang then 99% of the movie would remain the same.
>>46563 I really liked this movie. Thanks for the suggestion. The only other Korean movie I've liked is the Host. Can anybody recommend some korean movies similar to these two?
>>46767 this was the only movie i watched from 2018. About a wizdad and his wizdaughter. The main character is really wizardly though, he doesn't want to be part of norman society at all.
>>46563 Thanks for that fam. It felt kinda like magic, magic. Spooky but subtle supernatural and/or devil's mischief. Not predictable plot, without jumpscares. That's what i like!
Only thing I don't get is that name "Park Choon-bae"(jacket on the stone-throwing succubus and dead man/zombie). I guess it was only to deceive further about who is good and who is bad. >jap is evil >males are evil/succubi are good >rape Not much wizardly material.
>>46795 >Thanks for that Happy you liked it, I've been watching a bunch of Korean horror since that one but none is that good or interesting. If I come across something decent again I'll post it itt.
>>46731 First of all congratulations on your fantastic taste by liking the Host. There is absolutely nothing similar to it but you can check out that directors other work. Especially Memories of Murder is a must watch, though still not similar. Other good ones I've seen include: Old boy, The Chaser and Mother.
Only bothered to watch this because people said it was a movie that did the takes place on a computer idea good. Found it to be pretty good, was expecting it to be another case of "It's good in comparison to things like it but not on its own."
I found it quite tedious and boring myself. Pretty much the only thing on my mind while I was watching it was, "Man, this would be so much better if it would just drop the whole father/daughter thing, along with the military PTSD bullshit and, instead, simply be about a solitary guy who's disgusted with society and greatly dislikes other people".
I'm also quite tired of how the main character in these types of movies always seems to have some ridiculous past trauma which almost entirely informs their "abnormal behavior", thereby serving as nothing more than pandering to John Q. public, all to engender some worthless sense of "understanding" on their part. Perfect example of this would be Rust Cohle from True Detective. A wonderfully pessimistic character torn asunder by the show writer's nauseating need to give him some "tragic past", which serves as nothing more than a lame cover for the cold hard truth he spits out, since all the normos in the audience watching can just as easily dismiss it all since, "The only reason he thinks such dark & depressing things is because his kid got run over! That's all just his trauma talking!". Wouldn't want anyone to actually be challenged or have to think about such ideas. Nope they're always just the product of some stupid past crap, that completely undercuts the philosophy/beliefs of the protagonist, marking them as being unreliably sad and therefore not in their "right mind".
Without such pandering, it'd just be too unpalatable for the masses to swallow that somebody, in the case of Leave No Trace, could live that way and be perfectly content in doing so, with no skeletons in their closet "haunting them". As a result, I guarantee that we'll probably never have a film about the North Pond Hermit. Ole Christopher Knight would almost certainly make a normo's head explode in confusion/anger.
It actually made me laugh, if I'm being honest. Especially at the end, with that stupid clicking noise they made to each other, as they said their final goodbyes. Came off as super cringy and I couldn't help, but roll my eyes and chuckle as it happened.
I have watched "9". It was okay, but not worth watching.
Why?
It's very cliched.
The main character, 9, is a newcomer to a group trying to survive in a post-apocolyptic world. 9 is introduced by being saved by a member of this group. They're also all the same group or race of "people". 9 challenges the leader to exploration and in trying to save 2, who was kidnapped by robotic monster. This is all cliched already, but when they find 2, they meet 7, a badass who manages to save them from the beast. 7, cliched enough, is voiced by a female. I actually called it before "she" even talked. Next, they turn on the robotic monster that caused this, cue scientist having a grand vision of revolution of modern technology and a revolution of the ages. A time where his invention changes the world forever. Easy enough. Then, they manage to destroy the factory where the monster lives, gets chased, figure out that the souls are absorbed into the monster, 9 finds out a way to take back the souls that it took from their group, they release the souls, and then "they're finally free now", and it rains.
5 is the leader(?) of the group, and his character is just shallow. He's there to resist 9, and supposedly knows a lot, but we never get to know. He makes so many bad calls, never really takes any risks until now, and just lets 9 take his leadership from him. For example, he doesn't just straight up banish 9 and his accomplice whose name I can't remember. that release the monster. In fact, no punishment is given to him for literally dooming them all, destroying their hideout, and, not even rescuing 2, who was old and to scout to be killed as well as being used to unleash the beast.
The leader's lackey is a big guy named… I don't know. I never really learned them. He's big, dumb, and is useless. He tries to be the badass 7 was, but instead, he doesn't harm any single robotic creation at all. On guard duty, at the new base, he's immediately captured by the snake via hypnotism. His only purpose is in the beginning of the movie where he's used as an arm to intimidate 9. He's then just killed off after the new base is settled. He's only used in one or two instances. One is during the initial meeting with the group, at the original base, and two is when they're caught coming back to the base and TELL the leader where they are and what they were doing, instead of lying. They literally had a good alibi. It's a REALLY big church. It's totally possible to say they were still there. Or anything, really.
The ending was super easy to figure out, but the lead to it was so weird. The lead was that the scientist split his soul into these creations of his, and they're all the same person. However, he ALSO said that he gave the machine his intellect, but it HAD no soul. Instead of them getting captured and re-uniting into the machine to give it a soul, they release the souls in the machine, and then release the souls of their fallen bretheren into the sky. It was weird, but it made sense, since others were lost before 9 went into the group. Still, what an incredibly stale ending. It's like every other movie where the end where the evil is defeated and now, they must rebuild. It feels like it's just black and white with no nuance or gray to fool the viewer into a new and completely different ending. They chose this instead of killing the thing. Your friends are legit dead, and I doubt killing the thing would have resulted in something different. It's not like the souls will be trapped in there forever, right? Not much is actually explained about the lore except for the war that caused it, the robot vs man rebellion, the scientist's reasoning, etc. There's not much information about what could be done with the fractured soul, what happens inside the machine to those souls, the true ramifications of killing the machine, where the souls go in the sky, what happens to souls if their bodies are destroyed (same thing?), etc.
Overall, a movie that's just like any other movie of its type. I don't recommend it. Nothing even wizardly about it too.
>>46825 >Overall, a movie that's just like any other movie of its type. I don't recommend it.
And yet you created quite a long post about it. I saw it when at release date. I was a teenager back in 2009 and saw it from a perspective of someone who would be entertained by "transformers" movies; a kid in other words. Some time ago I wondered for the second time if i should re-watch it. I have similar opinion to yours. Animation and post-apocalyptic setting is the only cool thing about this movie.
>>46829 Since the beginning. It is just sort of like killing dogs. Most don't because they are pussies that are afraid the audience will hate them for it. I mean I remember in b&w version of Frankenstein the monster killed the little succubus in that movie. And that was back in the 30s. Then again even that was originally censored…
I finished this four hours long chinese drama. One of the most depressing movies I watched recently, but at the same time it felt kinda comfy, just watching the long shots of the fucked up world the main characters live in, reminded me of the dirty and hopeless eastern europe as I remember it from my childhood. There are at least three suicides through the movie, which is pretty solid, if we take into consideration the fact that the movie director killed himself after finishing his debut. I am not sure if I understood the message of the movie, or even if there was one, but I definitely liked the overall theme. Given the slow nature of the movie, I'd recommend watching it one hour at a time.
I'm glad we have similar tastes, I guess. I feel like my explanation of the movie actually goes towards every movie, and is an explanation of the tropes to look out for in these movies. By the time I saw the "female" doll thing, I should have stopped. Still, the ending was really promising with what it could have done.
Still, the movie felt really short and the story was rushing along. I truly didn't feel like they shouldn't have killed the big machine so quickly. They didn't, but it was killed immediately after the fake out.
So don't re-watch it if you have or haven't already. Though, it could count as entertainment to find out the plot of the movie and how it'll end before it actually ends. It's a challenge too.
>>46544 >>46545 loved the hell out of both Unbreakable and Split really high expectations for Glass
Shyamalan also made The Visit, really great horror movie, managed to creep the fuck out of me with very minimal effects and budget Very few whorish jumpscares, the movie is really focused on psychological horror and manages to wrench out some quality spooks from something as benign as "old people" Great acting, child actors are surprisingly not too grating (the chadlet is cringey, but supposed to be, and well done) If you do watch it, I recommend you abstain from looking at trailers, it's much better to go in unprepared
>>46632 to be honest, by now Ridley Scott has been senile for quite some time, and anyway, he never was the creative genius people give him credit for Alien owes a lot more to Dan O'Bannon and Giger than to Scott
Was expecting a typical revenge movie, but it was a comedy. And then it went from a comedy to a gritty thriller. The director who made this is friends with the director who made Green Room and Blue Ruin (also an actor in them too) so I guess that's not surprising. Overall, I liked it. But my sense of humor is in the gutter and I'll laugh at even a shitty joke just for how shit it is.
After the first hour and 30 minutes it feels like the movie just becomes random scenes that vaguely relates to one another. I wouldn't mind rewatching it a few more times to fully understand it, but it's 3 fucking hours long.
>>46885 When I was young 15-18 I loved Lynch. Saw this movie twice. It's a masterpiece. Don't remember why exactly. It's very emotional and a real trip. The photography+music is very good. Thanks for reminding this exists.
watched this seven and a half hour film in one sitting. it's melancholia (2008) directed by lav diaz. i actually wasn't bored at any point, just fidgety from focusing on one thing for an extended period of time. if you like slow cinema, i recommend this. the cinematography seemed a bit amateur at first, especially because i haven't seen any other diaz movies or many /good/ black&white digital films, and the audio is particularly terrible in the first two and a half hours (i think the whole movie used the internal camera mic) but i'm pretty sure it's done purposely, maybe not to the extent that it is but still so, because of how the narrative is set up.
>>46950 Could you make your top 10 list? 5k is a pretty impressive number. I keep a list of all movies I've watched on imdb and it's about 500 movies. I thought that was a lot.
I have really been watching less movies because it is such a hassle. If I try to stream it gets fucked up every 15 minutes and I have to reload or restart to get it working again. Direct downloads are totally hit or miss and finding active working links is a ordeal And torrenting gets my internet throttled for hours to 3d world broadband speeds.
Why is it 2019 and I can't just click on the thing I want to watch and have it just play without everything fucking up?
>>46956 My speed is just fine for everything that isn't streaming videos on movie and show sites or trying to torrent. I think they throttle certain kinds of traffic and certain web addresses that compete with their entertainment bundles.
Watched Glass and Enter the Spidervers at the cinema.
I feel a bit conflicted about Glass. It has quite a few problems and isn't as good as the two films that came before (Unbreakable and Split) but it was still a reasonably enjoyable movie if taken for what it was. Still the ending was a bit anti-climactic (probably spelled that wrong but whatever) and there are a lot of bad habits of M.Night in this film that I had hoped he had gotten over. It also kind of felt like a set up to a tv show or something that I doubt will ever happen.
Spiderman was a visual feast and overall the whole thing felt like a love letter to modern spiderman comic fans. If only the actual comics themselves were this good. It is a very unique and stylish film with a pretty good story. I recommend it to any spiderman or animation fan. You are in for a treat.
This movie was playing on tv and I watched it because I was bored. Its kind of a mix between a horror movie and an adventure one, like Indiana Jones mixed with REC. A bunch of normgroids go to the Paris catacombs and end up crossing the gates of hell. Its one of those movies that are filmed from the pov of a someone holding a camera, but its less annoying that other found footage movies. Anyway its a 6 at most, but had a fun time watching it. It had some great creature design, but they only appear for a few minutes a most. It also almost didn't have jumpscares which are usually very common in these kind of movies.
>>47008 Yeah this film. It totally lost me when that succubus suddenly have super healing powers that just as suddenly stop working for whatever reason. No idea what was that about. There's some occult references here and there that may have to do with the stuff I didn't get but the movie was not good enough to look it up afterwards.
Don't remember torrenting this, but I watched it. Felt like a loose live-action western adaptation of Watamote, honestly. It's a fairly predictable movie and hard to watch at times. Wish it ended with the main character committing suicide successfully but being a dumb comedy I knew there was going to be a last minute miracle. Thinking of it now, I can't really think of any non-dark comedy movies that end morbidly.
Where do you go watching your movies? I don't like to go to the cinema but I want to watch a recent movie. Is there a site where I can find decent quality movies? The movie is glass btw
>>47050 For big releases like that you can just go to piratebay. The moment someone releases a good copy it's bound to end up in there pretty quick. For more obscure titles I go to torrentz which tracks all public trackers out there, you would be amazed how much stuff you can find. If torrentz doesn't help and I can't find it on Youtube then >>47051, in my case iptorrents and avistaz.
Since I have been sort of seeing dolls and sex robots brought up a lot in some of the content I watch and read (youtube and blogs) I desided to give the movie Cherry 2000 a watch. Boy oh boy is it not a good movie, but still entertaining. I will say it is refreshing to have a movie where the robots don't turn out to go full "Destroy all humans" like almost every single film western film that touches on the topic of advanced humanoid robots. Overall it was just a dumb action flick with some satire and predictions that were closer then the makers probably suspected (most of it was still wrong though, lol). I also found it odd how much the movie teased nudity but never actually full on had any actual nudity. If it wasn't for some of the violent scenes it would probably be a pg-13 film nowadays.
>>47081 >>47097 A japanese cannibal who murdered a dutch succubus in France said in an interview the first part he went for was the ass, but it was harder to cut than he expected and he had to remove a lot of fat to get to the actual flesh. Maybe the video is showing the thighs, they seem a much better choice.
Not a movie, but can anyone recommend a good show that I can escape into? I’ve seen Futurama twice and I’m considering watching it again. Other considerations are finishing Star Trek or starting The Sopranos.
Really enjoyed Upgrade(2018). By the saw movie guy, low budget well done film with a few neat tricks to it. The fight scenes were a lot of fun and the twist that the chip in his neck was an AI that wanted to be human so it caused all the events in the movie was worth it. The whole film kind of felt a bit disjointed until that reveal, so I loved that feeling. Plus the guy in it becomes suicidal and he never recovers from that, and it's never dealt with in the movie. I thought that was fairly interesting.
>>47247 I have seen both in the interim and they are indeed fantastic. Thanks for bringing Lopushanskiy to my attention! I especially like visitor to a museum. The visuals are incredible and the portrait of a denegerate trash world is delightfully dark. I see it as a depiction in film of the gnostic idea of the corpse/prison world. Interestingly, I watched Zulawski's on the silver globe recently and it also touched on this idea. Some very good films they made behind the Iron curtain. Makes one wonder if political censorship can be less of a hindrance to art than profit-factor censorship.
Here's an interview with Lopushanskiy where he discusses working with Tarkovsky and his own artistic philosophy.
>>47314 Depends on what you are doing and how often. For example if they are comcast and you torrent a lot then a vpn is a good idea to get a VPN because they will illegally slow your shit down or cut your connection if you use the net how they don't like. Other companies like verizon don't really give a shit and you can ignore any warnings, not that they give any. I am assuming you live in a area where you only have one or two options? You can also avoid certain activity that they sniff for or mess with the data, but that isn't ideal. I honestly stream almost everything in such a way where they can't complain about what I am doing without admitting they are violating the law. If I apsolutly needed to torrent a lot then I would seriously consiter a VPN. Because it ain't being used for major security reasons or to hide major criminal activity or something I would prioritize which ever one is the fastest for your area. Even relatively weak VPN will do the job and their ain't shit your ISP can nor should do about it.
Think I am going to bite the bullet and actually see Battle angel in theatre this weekend and just make up my own mind if it is ok or not. I have really low expectations but I still hope it doesn't completely suck.
>>47332 I wouldn't say a big fan, no. It is more that this is a actual passion project rather then a cynical cash grab, and it has really mixed reaction among those who watched it, meaning I would have to see it myself to actually see if it sucks or not. Reviews are useless for this film because feminist have desided to be offended by the movie for some dumbass reason or another, so that is another reason why I have to see it for myself to know if it is yet another bad western adaptation of a Japaneses property or if it is something special. Plus I rather see it sooner before having any differences from the anime spoiled rather then later.
I will agree the trailer does not fill me with confidence though. I just hope that it isn't boring at least.
Just finished watching Alita My god, the mad men did it. They managed the impossible and break the streak. It is actually really good. Fuck the critics, fuck the reviewers, that shit was fucking amazing. A actual good adaptation based on anime/manga. The action is amazing, the visuals breath taking, the story follows the source material where it counts and deviates where it needs too. I am so glad I came out to see it. My only regret is not seeing it in 3d. I how it does well financially because it deserves it, and I would love to see a sequel where they finish the story of the manga. Though the ending was satisfying even if that doesn't happen.
Watched the lego movie 2. It was pretty good but not great. I enjoyed it a lot but there was something about it that I just wasn't as charmed by it as the first one.
>>47410 A very gay film about a ww2 finish war veteran that popularized leather gay porn. Its interesting since its the first finish film i see and really gay.
If you look at his artwork you will suddenly turn gay since he drew some beautifull cocks.
>>47409 extremely clever editing and staging. the frame of impact i'm pretty sure is actually just a flattened mannequin/doll. the way the shot is composed into left and right halves makes the editor's job a hell of a lot easier.
I had to pause this movie many times so that my body could escape the feeling of desperation and uneasiness by having a small convulsion that allowed me to calm down.
After almost two years (or more) of listening to this OST, I finally watched "The Truman Show".
What a movie. I think Jim Carrie did a pretty good acting job for most of the movie. He didn't really act all that well during The boating scene, where he was supposed to pretend to drown and struggle, but everything else is okay. I say that because it really didn't feel like he was struggling, and his position after his boat flipped over isn't good for drowning anyways. He was flipped on his back, so I never really thought, "oh, this guy's going to spit or cough up water" or something like that.
On his acting in the entire movie, his paranoia about being followed, his melancholy, his confusion, and everything related to him progressively finding out he's on a tv show is brilliant. The man knows how to act these feelings, and I never saw him as Jim Carrie, but as the character himself. His freakouts with his wife at the show were really great and felt mostly real. I don't think he used enough force when pushing her and controlling his wife's movements. His stance though, when threatening or prodding his wife to cut him up was a true stance of insanity and paranoia.
The ending is great to me. I've not been so interested in a film's ending and characters for a long while now. Everything, in my opinion, was sizzling, and finally, the movie was drawn to its conclusion. He progressively found out more and more about the truth, had real emotions towards things, talked to his friend about it, finally BROKE down, leaving him to do something he never could have done, go over a bridge with water, which he's afraid of, and finally, break out if site, go boating on the ocean, which he was always afraid of, and finally confront reality and decide to live it.
**His ultimatum to live in the world or pursue the real one was the final turning point, and to me, in a television series, especially one that has been going on for 30 years, I would say his breakdown and break out leading to him finally leaving his fantasy world would be the greatest ending in television in all of human history. I'm amazed the guards watching wanted to watch something else. They've seen the greatest ending in television history. The audience knew him from when he was born all the way up to his married life, and finally, the man figures out what's going on and gives the final "in case I don't see ya, good afternoon good evening and goodnight!"
I kind of want to talk about the show as well. The show show. There were a few things that just never made sense or just the lying was bad. The first thing I can think of is elevator scene. It makes sense to hide it, but they just didn't seem prepared to deal with lying, and every time they're caught in this situation, they just forcefully move people away. The previous love interest that wasn't planned also was dragged away like the others, but really, truly, the "father" did an EXCELLENT job portraying her as crazy. What a beast of an actor. I think he did everything right in that sense. Otherwise, things never seemed planned for the tv show. If he were spontaneous, they would obviously try to stop him, but he caught hold of that easily. This isn't a criticism of the film itself, but I thought it was pretty interesting to think the TV show wasn't prepared for these things. They've been doing this for 30 years already too.
I recommend this movie. I can't really explain how great it is.
>>47451 It is a great movie but my goodness your review of it is kind of amazing in its own right. Makes me want to drop what I am doing and watch it again.
Saw Spiderverse. The best part of the movie is definitely the animation. The story itself was pretty run of the mill and predictable, but it's a pretty fun movie for what it is. I don't read comics or care much about capestuff in general so I don't know how it holds up to the spiderverse comics, all 500 years worth of spiderman media in general, or the megaannum worth of capeshit in general.
>>47463 Lets just say it is a lot better then the current year comics it is loosely based on. I too really enjoyed the movie. Both as a fan of animations and as someone who grew up with spiderman.
>>47466 Interesting recommendation. I was just getting in the mode for a movie like that and then out of no where you recommenced something that fits so well.
>>47451 It's indeed a great movie. People made fun of Jim Carrey for so obviously trying to break into "serious" roles but he did a very good job. It would have been easy to be very melodramatic about it but he makes Truman an innocent guy who just wants to, well, find a 'true man' in himself and escape his little world.
The writing is so tight and I think it's one of those rare movies that can reward anyone. Kids can watch it and be amused by the story and Carrey's silliness, teens/young adults can watch it and sympathize with his desire to "get out there" in the world, and older/more serious viewers can appreciate the philosophical aspect and even the Eden parallels the movie poses.
You mentioned the OST; it's really gorgeous. Using Kilar at the end ties the whole movie up in a neat little bow.
>>47681 I use letterboxd too, mainly as an alternative because I really dislike imdb's design. I don't really interact with the community but looking at some reviews I can tell it ranges from people who love to meme and people taking their first film course.
>>47434 I've fallen in love with these melancholic, neon movies set in asian cities. Chungking Express and Fallen Angels are probably the best, but there's a bunch of others in the same vein. I have no idea if this is considered a genre but I'll make a watchlist of them anyway.
Watched the Antman sequel last week, it wasn't bad but the great part was mid-credits when the Pym family was sending him on a quick trip back into the quantum level and their walkie-talkie cuts out.
He's left floating there all like "uh hellooooo, this isn't funny." The camera flips back to the Pyms, and there's a lot of black specks floating down to the ground where they were standing that made you THINK it was a plain old swarm of ants. But then it zooms in and you're like HOLY SHIT IT"S ASH! THEY JUST VAPORIZED BECAUSE OF THANOS!!!
bi gan's long day's journey into night is finally in theatres in the states. just saw it, it's phenomenal and a must-see in theatre, so if you're interested go now while you have the chance.
I have been getting really into old Hammer horror films. Think I've seen most of the really iconic ones at this point. What are your favorite Hammer films? Are there any others with a similar "feel"?
I watched The Departed last night (spoilers ahead). It was alright. The beginning of the film was very rushed, it felt like it was flinging all these different characters and their arcs into your lap as soon as possible so it could rush headlong into the actual story. I liked the tension and DiCaprio's character, who I related with a little in regards to not having much of an identity.
The film is a little top heavy, as it kills off most of the main characters within a 20-30 minute timespan. The pacing was strange, as if they tried to start and end it as quickly as possible with this slow-roasting bog of character development inbetween. I laughed at the rat at the end.
I'm trying to watch more films in German to improve my German. I've watched a lot of the popular ones like Funny Games, Run Lola Run, The Lives of Others, Das Boot and Goodbye Lenin. Does anybody have any good german film recommendations?
I watched this movie called Lukas because it had Van Damn in it. Was a pretty somber "normal guy caught in the middle of the criminal underworld" type of movie. Dark and gritty yet not abrasive. Was paced well too. Not as much action as I was expecting, and the action there wasn't the typical action movie type stuff (excluding the car chase), but more sloppy and realistic as to fit with the crime drama genera it actually is in.
Giving a light recommendation to Sorry to Bother You. It's a fairly good social commentary on late capitalism and wage slavery so if it that sounds interesting give it a try.
I saw this recently. It's basically Toy Story but with darker themes of abandonment and depression. I thought it was really endearing. Well worth a watch.
>>47894 Great film, though it gave me way too many feels related to inanimate objects when I was a kid. Feels that took me a long time to get over. Probably indirectly lead me to the path of rationalism.
>>47894 >The Brave Little Toaster 1987 >1987 >Black female cop driver >succubus driving convertible with pro-animal stickers >internet >CCTV cameras >Theme of animal abuse in laboratories(Science laboratories. Product testing on animals that is now hot in media was not mentioned in any way.)
Im not a modern USA's history expert but isn't it all too progressive for its time?
It had been so long since I last watched something I almost forgot how it's like to experience a film. Gave a chance to The Professor and the Madman because they were supposedly going to talk about the Oxford Dictionary. Spoilers; they don't. Not really. I kinda liked the buildup for the two main characters but the second half is such a mess. Besides, if you put all the scenes where they actually talk about the process of putting a dictionary together you end up with perhaps 5 minutes of screen time. Quite a letdown. Not a bad film but I felt cheated a bit. I suppose it's my own fault.
I finally watched Mad Max 1 for the first time on a whim. I never really knew much about the series, and had admittedly only seen Fury Road previously so I was quite surprised by how restrained and pre-apocalyptic this first entry in the series was. Guess that's what happens when you're filming on an incredibly low budget.
I'm excited to watch Mad Max 2, to finally see what all the hype is about and why it's influenced people like del Toro and Kojima.
Does anyone know some movies similar to Cast Away staring Tom Hanks? I loved the sense of isolation and that 90% of the movie is just him living away from society
>>48007 Have you seen Fury Road? Fury Road is practically a remake of Mad Max 2 only with more modern special effects while 2 has that gritty 80s feel. Both are fun.
>>48022 I enjoyed this. Very little dialogue. Just a man alone on a ship. >Academy Award winner Robert Redford stars in All Is Lost, an open-water thriller about one man's battle for survival against the elements after his sailboat is destroyed at sea. Using only a sextant and nautical maps to chart his progress, he is forced to rely on ocean currents to carry him into a shipping lane in hopes of hailing a passing vessel. But with the sun unrelenting, sharks circling and his meager supplies dwindling, the ever-resourceful sailor soon finds himself staring his mortality in the face.
Not a survival film but you might like Never Cry Wolf, which is about a researcher mostly alone in the wilderness for months on end. Unlike cast away is is pretty chill though.
Finished watching the Zodiac not too long ago. It was alright, cgi was a bit heavy but better done than many other films, and the story seemed to drone on at times.
>>48028 I wasn't a fan of the pacing and some of the personal drama that felt like run time padding. Then again I usually prefer documentaries when it comes to true crime stuff.
>>47245 Got around to watching Upgrade myself, as both a fan of Sci-fi and action I really enjoyed it. Well polished and excellent throughout. May not be the "most wizardly" film, but it has been the best thing I have watched all week. A real treat.
Now just waiting for John Wick Chapter 3 to come out. I have high hopes but know the team behind it can pull it off. It is a good time for action films.
Going to see John Wicke Part 3 on Friday. I'm worried because there's a lead female role from some a-list actor, so it might turn out to be a crappy romance despite John being so faithful to his late wife.
>>48095 i'm sure it's great, but cover art is usually done by people who had no part in the movie, at least from what i can recall. the characters have so many different widths, different sized gaps between them, and shaped so arbitrarily it looks weird. that's all i meant, the house itself is kind of cool
I enjoyed this a lot, though I still do have some trouble fully getting into films from this era. The great Mel Gibson film 'Payback' was based on this classic. Also, in my research I uncovered a sort of wizardly piece of trivia: Co-star Angie Dickinson had an aspie daughter who committed suicide via exit bag. >Point Blank is a 1967 American neo-noir crime film directed by John Boorman, starring Lee Marvin, co-starring Angie Dickinson, Keenan Wynn and Carroll O'Connor, and adapted from the 1963 crime noir pulp novel The Hunter by Donald E. Westlake, writing as Richard Stark. >Point Blank combines elements of film noir with stylistic touches of the European nouvelle vague. The film features a fractured time-line, disconcerting narrative rhythms (long, slow passages contrasted with sudden outbursts of violence) and a carefully calculated use of film space (stylized compositions of concrete riverbeds, sweeping bridges, empty prison cells). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_Blank_(1967_film)
>>48126 IMBD pulled something similar for their discussion board. It was great to have a centralized place where you'd have a forum to discuss any particular individual movie.
Besides the policy changes, I just hate the loss of internet history.
>>48126 I mean idk the specifics of how they are implementing it, and whether they will get a cut of the purchases, but the basic idea of only having verified purchase reviews doesn't seem that heinous to me.
>>48136 From what I understand they will still have unpaid user reviews but they will not be displayed unless you go through a bunch of menus to find them, but they are deleating all the old user reviews made before this change. "Verified reviews" have to buy their tickets through the fandango link on the site for them to count and be displayed on the page for the film being reviewed. Obviously RT gets money from this and so does their parent company that owns both companies. Though I didn't look into this in super fine detail, so if I got anything wrong let me know.
Not a good detective movie. Not a good Pokemon movie. Not a good action movie. Not an ounce of originality in any aspect of direction. Predictable plot twists and outcomes.
These would all be fine if it was a children's film, but this was targeted at those who were children some 20 years back when Pokemon was big in the west. The writing is vulgar, chocked full of innuendo that we've all heard elsewhere before, and it feels as if the writers are constantly taking sarcastic jabs at aspects of the Pokemon universe that they weren't able to easily adapt believably to their grungry orange-and-blue American blockbuster. Many corners were cut in regards to how much research on Pokemon the writers and designers had to do. In fact I think less then 15 Pokemon get any notable camera time despite this being the "big city where all the Pokemon live happily together". CG was crummy too, which is real bad because the whole movie is cg.
I expected "Mediocre film that's good for being a cheesy nostalgia trip" but it was beyond redemption.
should /I watch transformers 4 and 5? the first three flicks were so dumb I don't even remember the plots at all, and that's coming from someone with a powerful long term memory
I saw that meth-addict jew is no longer the lead character, so I'm a little hopeful, I don't want to waste my time
Got around to watching Annihilation. It was ok, not great but not bad. A little slow and really tested my suspension of disbelief at times, but it was ok.
Just got into his work and I'm really excited to see his next movies. Manhattan (1979) was really great and surpassed my expectations. Reminded me of Taxi Driver.
>>48750 Both me and my mom really dislike most of his work. Her mostly because of the scandals he was involved in; me because I find his movies a chore to sit through. And no, before you start insulting me for brutish taste, I can enjoy many high brow films, and even well made (or not so well made) art films, but I just don't like his personal style, vision, and acting. I find it mostly boring. My sister likes some of his stuff, says she likes the way he writes dialog or something.
>>48752 What got me interested in his work was this comment made by an Anonymous:
"His movies are deeply egotistical and narcissistic, and I resonate with that. It's not that his movies are about something, or some event, like Kurosawa's movies are. It's not like his movies are about things and events as much as the person, the mind. In his movies he tries to portray the mind and the character of the director himself. I recommend watching Stardust Memories to understand what I'm saying. I mean that his movies are an exploration of the mind rather than events and that's what I like the most.
I also like that it's always about real life rather than fucking Star Wars or some shit. All the fiction I read now is about real life. I couldn't care less about fictional worlds and fantasy middle-ages or starships or whatever. I do like speculation about the future though.
Also, as I grow older I resonate more and more with the characters in his movie. In Stardust Memories he mentions Valium, amphetamine, anti-depressants and sleeping pills. Plus, as I'm writing a book, I've thoroughly enjoyed those parts where he talks about art and does inception-like things (which I think about a lot). It's great."
Lately I watched the Bleach movie on netflix.I am a big fan of Netflix and AMC channels. But I for watching stream online I use vpn tool from Veepn.cоm because in my place Netflix tv banned
