I've watched going in with the same optimism as you did, and I can say it was an utter disappointment. It was slow, with lame action, the climax looked like the ending scene of a ps2 game, don't waste your time with it.

Just watched Unbreakable.
Very interesting approach to the superhero genre since you don't know its a superhero movie until the very end.
Enjoyed it more than I thought. Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson are great on this. I feel like this movie hold ups even better now that Hollywood is cluttered with superhero movies.

Re-watched the time-travel science-fiction film 12 Monkeys. During this viewing I have considered the villain, a loner Virologist who unleashes a doomsday plague to wipe out humanity, to possibly be a warlock. This made the film that much more fun to watch.

I almost forgot how it feels like to watch a good film. My advice is to see this without knowing anything beforehand and see how the whole thing unfolds.
How much time do you give a film before giving up on it? I'm currently watching a bunch of movies I downloaded a bit randomly and some are really not worth it but I'm unsure how long is a fair chance. 10 minutes? 20? 5? I dunno

I recommend it. It's only an hour and 11 minutes long too. Watch it in the dark too for more atmosphere. It already has a ton of it, but the darkness makes it even more atmospheric.

Watched Ralph Breaks the internet, the new Grinch movie, and the first 10 minutes of Nutcracker, the 4 Realms (which I promptly slept though).
I of course loved the new Ralph movie. It was well animated, well paced, and well written. The feels centering around the changing of friendships were unexpected but well done, if a bit on the nose some times. The references weren't too cringey which I was worried about, but it will date the movie years down the line unlike the first. While I liked the first one better this sequel didn't disappoint. If you liked the first, and/or modern Disney in general, then give it a watch.
The Grinch was ok. If I was to sum it all up as shortly as I could I would say this version is soft.
The look, characterization, motivation, and relations with others throughout the film were in general much softer. He never felt truly grinchy. For fuck sake, he didn't even dislike Christmas all that much. He just had a case of the sads from being lonely all the time
It was odd in that it often felt both rushed and like it was stalling for time. I didn't really like the pacing of this one.
The animation was quite nice, and the visuals were all good.
All the newer songs and original to the movie music sucked ass and took me right out of the movie.
I will say that the one thing I like in this version over the live action version is that there was no stupid romantic sup-plot and Cindy Lou Hoo was pretty cool in this version. In most other regards I actually prefer the live action movie over this version. Which is saying quite a bit. It isn't that this new movie is bad, just kind of bland.
Of course the original animated special is better then both of them IMO but it wasn't feature length so whatever.

Watched Fist of Legend and currently watching Return of the Fist Of Legend an I had to stop the movie and google this bullshit propaganda going on in this movie.
Movie Chinese combatants in WWI in France in direct combat roles. I called total bullshit, paused the movie and looked it up. Yeah, this is just Chines propaganda and totally bullshit that isn't even remotely true. At most all the Chinese did in France during WWI was act as super cheap laborers that had nothing to do with combat and were far removed from front line combat. But the real shame is this one doesn't have Jet Lee in it like the first one.

There's nowhere to go from here. Spoilers ahead: they killed the alien race that created humans, revealed who designed the Aliens, changed the whole focus of the ALIEN franchise to be about evil androids and effectively driven the whole plot into a corner.
I think they're done. I read it was a financial disappointment so on top of being a mediocre movie people don't even care about it anymore. The first Alien is one of my favorite movies ever but it's hard to make sequels where you have to reveal stuff for plot development. One of the most appealing things about the first movie is the unknown. Now we know everything and it sucks.

Only bothered to watch this because people said it was a movie that did the takes place on a computer idea good. Found it to be pretty good, was expecting it to be another case of "It's good in comparison to things like it but not on its own."

I went in not knowing much about this, and it was very interesting to say the least.
I have watched "9". It was okay, but not worth watching.
Why?
It's very cliched.
The main character, 9, is a newcomer to a group trying to survive in a post-apocolyptic world. 9 is introduced by being saved by a member of this group. They're also all the same group or race of "people". 9 challenges the leader to exploration and in trying to save 2, who was kidnapped by robotic monster. This is all cliched already, but when they find 2, they meet 7, a badass who manages to save them from the beast. 7, cliched enough, is voiced by a female. I actually called it before "she" even talked. Next, they turn on the robotic monster that caused this, cue scientist having a grand vision of revolution of modern technology and a revolution of the ages. A time where his invention changes the world forever. Easy enough. Then, they manage to destroy the factory where the monster lives, gets chased, figure out that the souls are absorbed into the monster, 9 finds out a way to take back the souls that it took from their group, they release the souls, and then "they're finally free now", and it rains.
5 is the leader(?) of the group, and his character is just shallow. He's there to resist 9, and supposedly knows a lot, but we never get to know. He makes so many bad calls, never really takes any risks until now, and just lets 9 take his leadership from him. For example, he doesn't just straight up banish 9 and his accomplice whose name I can't remember. that release the monster. In fact, no punishment is given to him for literally dooming them all, destroying their hideout, and, not even rescuing 2, who was old and to scout to be killed as well as being used to unleash the beast.
The leader's lackey is a big guy named… I don't know. I never really learned them. He's big, dumb, and is useless. He tries to be the badass 7 was, but instead, he doesn't harm any single robotic creation at all. On guard duty, at the new base, he's immediately captured by the snake via hypnotism. His only purpose is in the beginning of the movie where he's used as an arm to intimidate 9. He's then just killed off after the new base is settled. He's only used in one or two instances. One is during the initial meeting with the group, at the original base, and two is when they're caught coming back to the base and TELL the leader where they are and what they were doing, instead of lying. They literally had a good alibi. It's a REALLY big church. It's totally possible to say they were still there. Or anything, really.
The ending was super easy to figure out, but the lead to it was so weird. The lead was that the scientist split his soul into these creations of his, and they're all the same person. However, he ALSO said that he gave the machine his intellect, but it HAD no soul. Instead of them getting captured and re-uniting into the machine to give it a soul, they release the souls in the machine, and then release the souls of their fallen bretheren into the sky. It was weird, but it made sense, since others were lost before 9 went into the group. Still, what an incredibly stale ending. It's like every other movie where the end where the evil is defeated and now, they must rebuild. It feels like it's just black and white with no nuance or gray to fool the viewer into a new and completely different ending. They chose this instead of killing the thing. Your friends are legit dead, and I doubt killing the thing would have resulted in something different. It's not like the souls will be trapped in there forever, right? Not much is actually explained about the lore except for the war that caused it, the robot vs man rebellion, the scientist's reasoning, etc. There's not much information about what could be done with the fractured soul, what happens inside the machine to those souls, the true ramifications of killing the machine, where the souls go in the sky, what happens to souls if their bodies are destroyed (same thing?), etc.
Overall, a movie that's just like any other movie of its type. I don't recommend it. Nothing even wizardly about it too.

I finished this four hours long chinese drama. One of the most depressing movies I watched recently, but at the same time it felt kinda comfy, just watching the long shots of the fucked up world the main characters live in, reminded me of the dirty and hopeless eastern europe as I remember it from my childhood. There are at least three suicides through the movie, which is pretty solid, if we take into consideration the fact that the movie director killed himself after finishing his debut. I am not sure if I understood the message of the movie, or even if there was one, but I definitely liked the overall theme. Given the slow nature of the movie, I'd recommend watching it one hour at a time.

By the time I saw the "female" doll thing, I should have stopped. Still, the ending was really promising with what it could have done.
Still, the movie felt really short and the story was rushing along. I truly didn't feel like they shouldn't have killed the big machine so quickly. They didn't, but it was killed immediately after the fake out.
So don't re-watch it if you have or haven't already. Though, it could count as entertainment to find out the plot of the movie and how it'll end before it actually ends. It's a challenge too.

Was expecting a typical revenge movie, but it was a comedy. And then it went from a comedy to a gritty thriller. The director who made this is friends with the director who made Green Room and Blue Ruin (also an actor in them too) so I guess that's not surprising. Overall, I liked it. But my sense of humor is in the gutter and I'll laugh at even a shitty joke just for how shit it is.

watched this seven and a half hour film in one sitting. it's melancholia (2008) directed by lav diaz. i actually wasn't bored at any point, just fidgety from focusing on one thing for an extended period of time. if you like slow cinema, i recommend this. the cinematography seemed a bit amateur at first, especially because i haven't seen any other diaz movies or many /good/ black&white digital films, and the audio is particularly terrible in the first two and a half hours (i think the whole movie used the internal camera mic) but i'm pretty sure it's done purposely, maybe not to the extent that it is but still so, because of how the narrative is set up.

Watched Glass and Enter the Spidervers at the cinema.
I feel a bit conflicted about Glass. It has quite a few problems and isn't as good as the two films that came before (Unbreakable and Split) but it was still a reasonably enjoyable movie if taken for what it was. Still the ending was a bit anti-climactic (probably spelled that wrong but whatever) and there are a lot of bad habits of M.Night in this film that I had hoped he had gotten over.
It also kind of felt like a set up to a tv show or something that I doubt will ever happen.
Spiderman was a visual feast and overall the whole thing felt like a love letter to modern spiderman comic fans. If only the actual comics themselves were this good. It is a very unique and stylish film with a pretty good story. I recommend it to any spiderman or animation fan. You are in for a treat.

Don't remember torrenting this, but I watched it. Felt like a loose live-action western adaptation of Watamote, honestly. It's a fairly predictable movie and hard to watch at times. Since I have been sort of seeing dolls and sex robots brought up a lot in some of the content I watch and read (youtube and blogs) I desided to give the movie Cherry 2000 a watch.
Boy oh boy is it not a good movie, but still entertaining. I will say it is refreshing to have a movie where the robots don't turn out to go full "Destroy all humans" like almost every single film western film that touches on the topic of advanced humanoid robots. Overall it was just a dumb action flick with some satire and predictions that were closer then the makers probably suspected (most of it was still wrong though, lol). I also found it odd how much the movie teased nudity but never actually full on had any actual nudity. If it wasn't for some of the violent scenes it would probably be a pg-13 film nowadays.

Really enjoyed Upgrade(2018). By the saw movie guy, low budget well done film with a few neat tricks to it. The fight scenes were a lot of fun and the twist that the chip in his neck was an AI that wanted to be human so it caused all the events in the movie was worth it. The whole film kind of felt a bit disjointed until that reveal, so I loved that feeling. Plus the guy in it becomes suicidal and he never recovers from that, and it's never dealt with in the movie. I thought that was fairly interesting.

Just finished The Lego Batman movie and it is unironically one of the best batman movies made in the last 10 years. It was great. 5 out of 5.

A actual good adaptation based on anime/manga. The action is amazing, the visuals breath taking, the story follows the source material where it counts and deviates where it needs too. I am so glad I came out to see it. My only regret is not seeing it in 3d.

After almost two years (or more) of listening to this OST, I finally watched "The Truman Show".
What a movie. I think Jim Carrie did a pretty good acting job for most of the movie. He didn't really act all that well during The boating scene, where he was supposed to pretend to drown and struggle, but everything else is okay. I say that because it really didn't feel like he was struggling, and his position after his boat flipped over isn't good for drowning anyways. He was flipped on his back, so I never really thought, "oh, this guy's going to spit or cough up water" or something like that.
On his acting in the entire movie, his paranoia about being followed, his melancholy, his confusion, and everything related to him progressively finding out he's on a tv show is brilliant. The man knows how to act these feelings, and I never saw him as Jim Carrie, but as the character himself. His freakouts with his wife at the show were really great and felt mostly real. I don't think he used enough force when pushing her and controlling his wife's movements. His stance though, when threatening or prodding his wife to cut him up was a true stance of insanity and paranoia.
The ending is great to me. I've not been so interested in a film's ending and characters for a long while now. Everything, in my opinion, was sizzling, and finally, the movie was drawn to its conclusion. He progressively found out more and more about the truth, had real emotions towards things, talked to his friend about it, finally BROKE down, leaving him to do something he never could have done, go over a bridge with water, which he's afraid of, and finally, break out if site, go boating on the ocean, which he was always afraid of, and finally confront reality and decide to live it.
**His ultimatum to live in the world or pursue the real one was the final turning point, and to me, in a television series, especially one that has been going on for 30 years, I would say his breakdown and break out leading to him finally leaving his fantasy world would be the greatest ending in television in all of human history. I'm amazed the guards watching wanted to watch something else. They've seen the greatest ending in television history. The audience knew him from when he was born all the way up to his married life, and finally, the man figures out what's going on and gives the final "in case I don't see ya, good afternoon good evening and goodnight!"

Saw Spiderverse. The best part of the movie is definitely the animation. The story itself was pretty run of the mill and predictable, but it's a pretty fun movie for what it is. It would have been easy to be very melodramatic about it but he makes Truman an innocent guy who just wants to, well, find a 'true man' in himself and escape his little world.
The writing is so tight and I think it's one of those rare movies that can reward anyone. Kids can watch it and be amused by the story and Carrey's silliness, teens/young adults can watch it and sympathize with his desire to "get out there" in the world, and older/more serious viewers can appreciate the philosophical aspect and even the Eden parallels the movie poses.

Watched the Antman sequel last week, it wasn't bad but the great part was mid-credits when the Pym family was sending him on a quick trip back into the quantum level and their walkie-talkie cuts out.
He's left floating there all like "uh hellooooo, this isn't funny." The camera flips back to the Pyms, and there's a lot of black specks floating down to the ground where they were standing that made you THINK it was a plain old swarm of ants. But then it zooms in and you're like HOLY SHIT IT"S ASH! THEY JUST VAPORIZED BECAUSE OF THANOS!!!
That part really sent a chill down my spine.

I have been getting really into old Hammer horror films. Think I've seen most of the really iconic ones at this point. What are your favorite Hammer films? Are there any others with a similar "feel"?

I watched The Departed last night (spoilers ahead). It was alright. The beginning of the film was very rushed, it felt like it was flinging all these different characters and their arcs into your lap as soon as possible so it could rush headlong into the actual story. I liked the tension and DiCaprio's character, who I related with a little in regards to not having much of an identity.
The film is a little top heavy, as it kills off most of the main characters within a 20-30 minute timespan. The pacing was strange, as if they tried to start and end it as quickly as possible with this slow-roasting bog of character development inbetween. I laughed at the rat at the end.

I'm trying to watch more films in German to improve my German. I've watched a lot of the popular ones like Funny Games, Run Lola Run, The Lives of Others, Das Boot and Goodbye Lenin. Does anybody have any good german film recommendations?

I watched this movie called Lukas because it had Van Damn in it.
Was a pretty somber "normal guy caught in the middle of the criminal underworld" type of movie. Dark and gritty yet not abrasive. Was paced well too.
Not as much action as I was expecting, and the action there wasn't the typical action movie type stuff (excluding the car chase), but more sloppy and realistic as to fit with the crime drama genera it actually is in.

Giving a light recommendation to Sorry to Bother You. It's a fairly good social commentary on late capitalism and wage slavery so if it that sounds interesting give it a try.

I saw this recently. It's basically Toy Story but with darker themes of abandonment and depression. I thought it was really endearing. Well worth a watch.

It had been so long since I last watched something I almost forgot how it's like to experience a film.
Gave a chance to The Professor and the Madman because they were supposedly going to talk about the Oxford Dictionary. Spoilers; they don't. Not really. I kinda liked the buildup for the two main characters but the second half is such a mess. Besides, if you put all the scenes where they actually talk about the process of putting a dictionary together you end up with perhaps 5 minutes of screen time. Quite a letdown. Not a bad film but I felt cheated a bit. I suppose it's my own fault.

I finally watched Mad Max 1 for the first time on a whim. I never really knew much about the series, and had admittedly only seen Fury Road previously so I was quite surprised by how restrained and pre-apocalyptic this first entry in the series was. Guess that's what happens when you're filming on an incredibly low budget.
I'm excited to watch Mad Max 2, to finally see what all the hype is about and why it's influenced people like del Toro and Kojima.

Not a survival film but you might like Never Cry Wolf, which is about a researcher mostly alone in the wilderness for months on end. Unlike cast away is is pretty chill though.

Finished watching the Zodiac not too long ago. It was alright, cgi was a bit heavy but better done than many other films, and the story seemed to drone on at times.

Going to see John Wicke Part 3 on Friday. I'm worried because there's a lead female role from some a-list actor, so it might turn out to be a crappy romance despite John being so faithful to his late wife.

CG battles can be cool but nothing compares to the real deal you see in Ran and Kagemusha. Kurosawa was so amazing.
I also recommend Ten Chi To (heaven and earth). These are great movies for history buffs that like inmersion

I enjoyed this a lot, though I still do have some trouble fully getting into films from this era. The great Mel Gibson film 'Payback' was based on this classic. Also, in my research I uncovered a sort of wizardly piece of trivia: Co-star Angie Dickinson had an aspie daughter who committed suicide via exit bag.

I watched Detective Pikachu.
Not a good detective movie.
Not a good Pokemon movie.
Not a good action movie.
Not an ounce of originality in any aspect of direction.
Predictable plot twists and outcomes.
These would all be fine if it was a children's film, but this was targeted at those who were children some 20 years back when Pokemon was big in the west. The writing is vulgar, chocked full of innuendo that we've all heard elsewhere before, and it feels as if the writers are constantly taking sarcastic jabs at aspects of the Pokemon universe that they weren't able to easily adapt believably to their grungry orange-and-blue American blockbuster. Many corners were cut in regards to how much research on Pokemon the writers and designers had to do. In fact I think less then 15 Pokemon get any notable camera time despite this being the "big city where all the Pokemon live happily together". CG was crummy too, which is real bad because the whole movie is cg.
I expected "Mediocre film that's good for being a cheesy nostalgia trip" but it was beyond redemption.
