Been wageslaving for a year and I managed to build my first half decent PC with some of the money I saved up. Any other anons enjoy this?
I used:
Ryzen 5 2600, ASUS ROG x470 mini itx, 16gb of RAM, and an rx590. Hopefully should last me 4 or 5 years since I plan to go NEET for awhile again soon.

It was always a pain in the ass to me when I had to build a PC. Every single build there was always some part that was shipped bad and needed to be sent back or replaced even when I only bought new parts from well respected dealers.
I mean for fuck sake, I had to send back a case once because it was bent at the joints due to shipping damage. Had shitty PSU, CPUs, Mobo, GPUs, HHDs. Only thing I have yet to have shipped fucked up before is new ram sticks. Why the fuck is this acceptable is beyond me.
I now use a laptop/prebuilt as my computer and have had almost no troubles. My next computer will be a prebuild or gaming laptop too. Fuck all the shipping drama and bad parts.

I don't know where you live but that hasn't been a realistic option in years. Besides, with the mark-up they charge you are usually better off buying prebuilt by the time you are done. At least that is how it was 15 years ago.

Anyone here who runs Windows 7 on Ryzen and can share their experiences?
I want to upgrade my PC after 7 years of using the same build (except PSU replacement and some storage additions) but Ryzen doesn't support Windows 7, and I don't really want to move up to 10. I know it's technically possible to run on 7 after looking it up online, but I wasn't sure if there were any issues people had run into I should be aware of.

Running windows 7, the only complain I have is that it has no support for individual monitor scaling. So if you have a 4k monitor, then you can only use scaling that affects both monitors.
It's kind of shocks me sometimes when people say that win 7 is old, for me it was and is like a brand new OS, weird.

I have been saving up some money for sometime and would like to build my own pc too. Can anyone give me a rundown of what specs are the best. I am gonna be using it to play old games mostly, maybe modern games too. Is the RX 590 a 4 or 8 gb card? I'd say you're good for a nice long while. I put together a budget build to replace my pre-built toaster and it runs smooth as butter. AMD is great.

Assembled a pc for myself finally today, it brings me so much joy. I used to wait for visual studio to start up like 3-4 minutes on my previous crappy pc, now it's almost instantaneous. And no laggs with freezes in games.
It sucks that there so much marketing gimmicks for gaming monitors though. Some one them go as far as blatantly scam you and straight up lying to customers in specs.
For fucks sake I just want a high refresh rate with gsync.

I've been thinking of building a new PC for a few months now.
I plan on using Ryzen 5 2600 (no overclocking) it's pretty close to 5 3600 in terms of specs but costs half its price where I live and is going to have an easier time with Windows 7, hopefully. (The price will probably drop further once Zen 3 hits the shelves, not but I'm not sure if I'm really willing to wait and who knows what's the economy going to be like by the end of 2020).
Still unsure about the motherboard. Having more room for future upgrades would be nice, even though I won't be touching my PC for the next 4 or so years once I'm done. Whether I should choose mATX or ATX is also a big question. I've never built mATX builds before, I suppose building a smaller PC could be fun and I'll be saving myself some money, but shittier VRM and cooling plus less ports overall are a big concern. For the standard ATX I have my sights on Gigabyte B450 Aorus Elite, and in case I decide to roll with mATX I'll probably take Gigabyte B450M DS3H.

When it comes to choosing a video card, I kind of want to buy GTX 1660, but I wonder if it's a good choice for me personally. I'm not a gamer, I don't follow the new releases, I care little about graphics, and I don't do art professionally. It's basically an expensive nice to have which I won't be using to its full potential, most of the time, at least. I could settle for a worse graphics card, but the worse options are only barely cheaper, so I might as well go all out.
Frankly speaking I feel kind of bad spending all the money I've got on a new, essentially gaming oriented PC, considering that my current build does its workstation side of things more or less alright and the games I play aren't usually demanding, and if they are, I can tweak the settings and use configs to make them run smoother.

If you plan to use 2 graphics card or just a lot of PCI-E devices, then check how many PCIE lanes processor can support. I did that mistake and now stuck with i9 9900k, when could have gone with i9 10th gen X-series, which is slightly more expensive by a small margin.

Can confirm. Specially older games, rpgmaker games, emulation, everything out of the big studio titles things get bumpy and broken pretty damn fast. We have big enough drives these days to have Windows installed for gaming, it's not a big deal.

Took me like a year to save up and buy all parts and wait for them to arrive, but finally assembled a gaming pc. Did a custom loop with "ZMT" rubber tubing and two PE 360mm radiators from EK
not really sure how well it is built and how long it will last, but so far the graphics card was at 54c and never got past 56c after like an hour of gaming. I built my dad a pc from scratch using my old parts. he was impressed but there's really not much to it imo. cable goes in that hole, screw those in, bit of thermal paste and ur done.

What's a good measure of CPU performance? Given changes in core processor code, memory caches, and pipelining, I want to take that into account and see how CPU performance has been improving over the past ten years since clock speed has more or less stagnated.
Also, is there a good place I can look up CPUs by such a metric?

Benchmarks probably, since they take into consideration each of those factors. There are different benchmarks that depend more on certain elements, like number of cores or clock speed, so you have to choose the benchmark that fit the use case. For videogames they often just play the game as normal and determine the fps difference(keeping other variables like the gpu static).

Not a build, but I ordered an enhanced CPU (Core i7) for my 2010 Thinkpad. The W510 is a business class workstation so it has excellent performance in 2D applications, especially digital art and photo packages. It also has an uncannily good microphone (for conferences I guess). This is great because I want to get back in to drawing and also maybe livestream it for my wizard friends over the internet. It performed great with the pen display I had before, never any slowdowns. I also got a disk drive to 2.5" bracket. I plan to upgrade the RAM to the max 22gb for laughs.
Once that's upgraded I can sell this gaming laptop and rebuild a desktop again for gaming and UHD video editing. I'm aiming for a 2080 and at least an older i7. I need Intel because the best video formats to render in are locked out of or otherwise bottlenecked by AMD. next haul of bux I get I will find a vintage ATX case - one of those beige monoliths. Where do you guys get hard drives for cheap? I've been looking at the used market, but people want new prices for used drives. I remember someone posting a link to some refurbished HGST 4TB drives for like $50 5-6 years ago, but I didn't have any money then. I did manage to find a pc at a thrift store with a 2TB drive for $12, which was pretty cool, though.
