I watched Total Recall(1990) the sci fi action movie based on a short story by Phillip K. Dick. It was fun and creative, and there's this eerie and peculiar feeling you have watching the film, not knowing if everything that's occurring is just a vivid dream the protagonist is having. That's because at the beginning you watch him going to this futuristic travel agency that implants vivid memories of a perfect vacation saving the customer the stress and troubles that might come with a real vacation, but also offering him the choice of being a different him, in Quaid's case, he chose to be a special agent that has a mission in Mars, and also a romance with an athletic demure brunnete(his preferences in succubi) and that's exactly what you see throughout the whole movie and till the very end.
What I most enjoyed were those intriguing moments where the "truth", that Quaid is not the person he thinks he is, and that the original Quaid erased his memories to defeat the leader of the rebels in Mars and that everything was a ploy of his and he was an asshole, is revealed to Quaid because they're like a false plot twist that creates suspense and great disbelief, and they do this twice, so you end up with a plot twist that you are suspicious of, and then the ending does a wonderful job in leaving you just wondering if what you watched really happened or was simply part of the vacation package Quaid bought for himself in that futuristic travel agency.
I don't know what to believe and I'm unsure, you could really say it was a dream, but if it was a dream then him going to the travel agency was just part of that dream, so everything was a dream, and from the very beginning you watched Quid's dream and the ending was just the end of his dream and the false vacation on Mars he bought.
>>57501 watched that a few months ago and really liked it
there is a line in an austrian death machine song, or maybe the song name itself, i cant remember. it is 'see you at the party, richter' and i basically watched it so i could understand it
MOON. It's about an astronaut living on the moon by himself with his robot helper and mining lunar regolith for helium-3. I like hard sci-fi so that makes me like the movie too.
>>57503 You watched the movie because of a song? Cool. "See you at the party, Ritcher" is Arnold's one liner after he defeats Richter in an elevator fight near the end, where the latter loses his arms and falls off the elevator to meet his death. It's funny because that's the last thing Ritcher says to Quaid before he is about to get wiped out of his memories to become Hauser, his former identity.
>>57501 >from the very beginning you watched Quid's dream and the ending was just the end of his dream and the false vacation on Mars he bought. Interesting, I never considered that, is it implied in the short story the movie is based on?
>>57514 I haven't read that book in particular, but a lot of Phil K. Dick books feature the protagonist experiencing paranoia and schizophrenia, particularly about what reality they are living in, which is why I think Total Recall is a better adaption of Phil K. Dick's book than Blade Runner. Plus it has more pulpy noir action like the books have, while still being cerebral.
I recommend I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020). Although the main character does have romantic regrets, the focus of the movie is on his introversion and more general regrets about life. The two main characters (Jake and his girlfriend) suggest a romance-focused movie, however it is deeper than that and if you are interested in movies with psychological depth, "banal surrealism" (i.e., surrealism which doesn't necessarily ruin an otherwise realistic story), symbolism etc then it is a great movie. Kaufman is very well-read and makes an effort to include a lot of deeper meaning in his movies, and not in a tedious or pretentious way (although he is sometimes accused of being pretentious). Many reviews of the movie described it as boring, try-hard, etc - but I feel they miss the point of the story, and how it is provided to us in a way that is both very artistic and also in a way that does not simply provide questions and answers neatly wrapped but rather themes and interpretative opportunities.
>>57517 There were moments in it that brought up familiar feelings to some of the internal experience of suicidal desire and fractured mind. It was pretty cool.
Finished watching first season of True Detective (and after briefly looking at S2, I'll leave it at that). Cohle was interesting character, I think I'll mostly go with my gut feeling (I've seen the show on Wizchan and got curious), because whenever I seek recommendations for movies and TV shows I end up watching stuff that doesn't stick with me. It's especially bad with anime.
>>57517 Enjoyed this one a lot. Really captured that sense of quiet, cold despair. Especially a certain type of existential despair that's too personal to share with anyone else in a meaningful way. Just a burden for you to carry until you die. Would love similar recommendations if anyone has them.
I watched Shrek the Musical. It does not comparable to the original Shrek movie. The jokes are not good and without confidence. Where there should have been silence are cheap attempts at smaller jokes. It does not work. A lot of the jokes are like that. They've felt half assed and quick. There's no waiting for jokes to be had. It's an attempt at instant gratification.
The musical part had so much potential to exhibit sad emotions. The songs never went into a slower tempo. The lyrics weren't somber enough to exhibit the feeling of alienation and loneliness Shrek felt all his life. The songs were always upbeat.
The princess is less likable in my opinion and seems a lot crazier in this musical than in the real film. I didn't even like her that much.
Donkey I swear to god had a gay voice. I was worried they would disregard the character development he draws from Shrek but they handle that well. There's a song called "Freak Flag" that references or draws inspiration from gay pride. The phrase, "I'm wood and I'm good" is used so there's no denying it. It felt weird and out of place - especially because the song is the last or second last song sung.
I suggest watching the original Shrek because the voice actors do a better part in conveying their emotions (especially Shrek's) and the movie seems to be much more masterfully crafted than the broadway musical.
By the way this is a musical made into a movie that's available on Netflix.
>>57556 I've seen it a few times. It's alright. Not like a documentary, but far from something like Rampage. It has some memorable moments and the actors do a good job portraying believable teen angsters who've had enough of life. There's not a lot of memorable dialogue, but mostly because much of it was improvised ad-lib and feels very natural because of the fact. The limousine scene in particular actually made me uncomfortable as I sympathized with Cal. It respects the (real) shooters by making sure you understand that they're humans, and pretty normal ones at that. It reflected well the fact (and even spelt it out with dialogue towards the end) that tagteam shootings like this can only happen when the two right people meet against astronomical odds, and that if they never had, neither would have gone through with any massacres. The direction was pretty ambitious for an independent film, having the whole thing be seen through cameras operated by the actual people involved. It makes for an unpredictable watch because each character has their own approach to videography. The only exception being the second last scene shown through the school CCTV.
The CCTV scene actually gets tossed around on the net on its own quite a bit and it always tricks a few people in to thinking its real. That's what I thought when I first saw it. The dispatcher's desperate but professional communication and broken audio make it a very tense watch. Look up the scene even if the rest of the movie doesn't interest you, it's pure slasher horror but not Hollywoodized, as if that was possible.
>>57555 Only watched the first one. I think it was supposed to be shocking but it came off more as unintentionally silly then anything else. Also the pacing hindered my enjoyment. The beginning drags for too long and the attempts at suspense fall flat more often then not.
Maybe one day will make a day of watching all of them back to back. Seems fitting for the premise, lol.
>>57559 >unintentionally silly The entire premise is so silly I can't believe there's anything unintentional about it, but I agree with you about everything. In fact I dropped the first movie because I just couldn't take how over the top Dr. Heiter was. It kinda ruined it for me. I liked the second one a lot better because Martin is a more likeable character.
It's interesting because I remember reading tons of reviews saying the second movie was complete shit because they replaced the main character. To me the decision is what made the second one watchable.
I wanted to watch Wonder succubus but the succubus they casted is a bitch that looks like a jewish tranny rat. Isn't wonder succubus supposed to look like a beautiful graceful succubus? This whore looks like a lanky tranny and has a ratface. how am I supposed to believe she is wonder succubus with those features she has, what the actual fuck. Spoiler because holy shit she looks like a fucking rat.
>>57577 Hollywood still hasn't managed to make a decent female superhero movie, they always make it about some embarrassing feminist power fantasy and forget about the "hero" part
>>57595 The Powerpuff succubi Movie (2002) and kinda sorta Tank succubus were both good in my opinion. I mean Tank succubus isn't "technically" a super hero but it's from a comic book and is close enough. Anti-hero would be most accurate I think.
with sites like tubetv, asiancrush, and popcornflix i don't even have to torrent movies anymore. i just download them from those websites via youtube-dl
>>57715 I have good enough internet and computer that I can just stream in HD. Since I only watch things once every hand full of years this works best for me.
I've undertaken the task of entertaining myself by watching Westerns, Samurai, and War films. When I watch a new one I'll see if I can't write something about it.
Yesterday I watched Unforgiven, directed by Clint Eastwood, 1992
Overall it was an enjoyable film. The story and leading characters were firmly outlined within the first 15 minutes with a second wave being introduced later on. I had no trouble following who is who, which is a problem I seem to have with films with a significant supporting cast, especially if it's Japanese. I guess it's autist friendly in this regard. It wasn't drawn out nor did it feel like they tried to cram in more than they wanted to over 2 hours.
The film starts out raunchy and seemingly offensive on purpose, with a proclaimed whore being sliced up for mocking a drunk customer's penis. A cohort joins in the slashing before both are stopped by gunpoint, but neither receive a lashing and instead must pay a small material fee for damages to property of the whoremaster. A bounty is placed by the prostitutes in secret, the conditions of which become distorted and exaggerated as word travels through 1880's midwest America. After swearing he'd never kill again, a retired bounty hunter takes up the offer so he can buy a future for his children. He employs the help of his old partner in crime, now a made man living his own wholesome life, as well as that of a young killer kid. They've got a lot to lose and little to gain, but this is all they know.
The directing and cinematography was good. Nothing spectacular, but as a western there's not a lot of need for artistic scenery and special effects. I really enjoyed the character's writing above all else. The way their true emotions and feelings come to light throughout the film, the value the bounty hunters place on each other. What started out as a disgusting slaughter film quickly turned in to a heartfelt lesson on a man's feelings. I particularly enjoyed the Kid's revelation. Little Bill was an 1800's version of the sheriff from First Blood, so it made me glad to see him at the receiving end of a firearm on multiple occasions.
Good for a watch if you enjoy a slow (but fulfilling) story and old timey gunplay. It's not as offensive as it could have been with such a premise and there is definitely soul behind the writing. Clint Eastwood does a good job of selling the "guy who's been there and done that, and has had enough of it" old man archetype. I look forward to seeing more of his films.
i am guessing it's because the indian psychopath in the first one looks like a white guy painted brown and the killer hitchiker in the 3rd one is a black guy going after a white succubus also the quasi-rape scene in the 2nd one.
this was highly enjoyable(probably more so than the first one). i don't care what some normalfag critics think of films
After a streak of bad movies finally hit a good one.
The Wolf of Snow Hollow. Wasn't mindblowing or anything but was just slightly above average thriller with a ending that didn't suck and not too much progressive bullshit other then some rando getting triggered by the word faggot in the beginning (can't say more without giving away plot points).
It is more about the stress of everything on the lead cop then anything else. Still was surprised that it didn't suck. Yeah, not a high bar to go over but still, 2020 has been a pretty bad year for direct to video movies.
I watched Pulp Fiction. It was a weird movie with three memorable moments that are referenced a lot. That is quite the achievement. Not gonna lie. I decided to watch it because of the dead nigger storage. Was not disappointed.
It was okay, I mainly watched because Kitano and Shiina were in it. 5 guys who are pretty down on their luck steal a large sum of money from a yakuza family branch and get hunted down. Lots of shock content and it kind of feels a little like Sonatine with how it portrays the cycles of violence.
Also was a cool surprise to see the guy who played Sagawa in Yakuza 0 in this as a minor character.
I needed this film in my life right now. Unapologetic action flick that starts slow and builds to the ridiculous. Just a satisfying watch that I really enjoyed. 4 out of 5.
>>57497 (SPOILERS FOR FIGHT-CLUB, DONT READ IF YOU DONT WANT TO GET SPOILED)
I just watched fight club and I have to say it was way different to what I was imagining. I was confused to why people said the movie was the greatest as I thought it was about some office worker joining a secret men's club to relieve stress but I thought that the execution was done right so I'd try and rate the movie myself. After watching I am still confused (although not about the reviews of the movie but the movie itself); why did so many people join Jack's cult and work for him, where they a part of his imagination or not; In the car crash scene was jack driving and also at the passenger seat at the same time? Was Tyler always his imagination or was he just imagining him after his place burned down? Did jack destroy his own place or was it a coincidence and he went insane after that?
>>58094 All his followers and the events are supposed to be real and happening. Only Tyler is imaginary, and he’s imaginary from the start. (He actually pops up several times in the beginning). Every thing Tyler does is just Jack doing it while he thinks he’s asleep. As for that scene in the car, I don’t know how it works there, that’s just a standing plot hole I think.
>>58095 (spoiler) I see, but how did he convince so many to follow him (even cops and those that work with rich politicians)? Was this supposed to tie into the "People are mentally suffering and want a release" message that Tyler said at the beginning?
>>58096 ok ignore the rich politician worker thing, I finally understood what he meant by that (he wasnt talking about his followers but the fact that average normal citizens do the jobs for them)
The Doll(1919) Forced into marriage by his uncle, a man decides to fool him by marrying a life-like mechanical doll instead.
I don't often watch silent films but I quite enjoyed this one. Helped by the relatively quick pace and it only being a bit over a hour. I think you other wizards might get a kick out of it too. It's pretty funny.
I gave this a try and it sucked, really predictable and cliché thriller about a failed normie. Watch Nightcrawler for a similar premise but done right.
I finally watched cool world and it just sucked. Someone here said the director wrote it to be a horror film but some higher up changed that and it led to a fist fight. That anecdote alone was honestly more entertaining than this piss poor roger rabbit imitation of a movie.
>>58590 I thought it was ok, but not actually good. Studio interference strikes again, but the writing was really weak in the original script too so they were probably right to worry. Add to that sub par performances by they live action actors and a second act that lacks focus and you have a very mediocre film. That said it was pretty risk taking and relatively unique in several ways, which I appreciate. I certainly wasn't bored watching it, so it is at the very least somewhat entertaining.
finally got around to watching the seventh seal don't figure I can say anything new about it, but I liked it. I've been wanting to watch a movie about someone in space, or someone who has intentionally isolated themselves. was thinking of watching interstellar but i ended up just reading about it on wikipedia.
Started watching Marvel capeshit because a co-worker is forcing it to me. They happen to be a fujo, and holy fuck I'm starting to get the hate for them and superhero movies.
>>58641 they weren't bad movies, I don't understand the snobbery I see everywhere online, is it one of those things again where everyone hates x just because they think it's popular to hate it? reverse virtue signaling, it's so pathetic
>>58645 >they weren’t bad movies All of them are just set up for the next installment. I mean yeah they can be fun but they just spend too much time with the whole universe shit than focus on a contained story.
>>58645 Yeah I don't mind them other than what previous Wizards posted. It's like western shonen and I was never a fan of long series and 'mindless' entertainment.
I was ignoring them for decades, I think most people have a hard time separating fanbase from the movies and that's why they hate them. I mean for all the SJW shit comic industry is known for, I don't get why fujos are "shipping" those character with eachother when there's nothing in the movies indicating that, quite the contrary.
>>58646 Most are actually self contained stories with only small hints and references to the other upcoming ones, at least the ones I have seen.
Really not sure how you could watch any of them and honestly come away with that opinion. Not all of them are great movies, but they all tell complete self contained stories of their own. At least of all the ones I have seen. I haven't watched them all and probably never will get around to watching them all (seriously don't even like marvel universe/company that much).
>>58657 Most of the intro ones are self contained, like black panther or the first ironman and stuff, but beyond that everyone expects you to know all these characters and what they do and who they know and why it matters that they do or do not possess x,y, or z.
I watched Monster House (2006). I saw it in theaters as a wee wiz and enjoyed it then, but completely forgot about it until seeing some meme about the the fat gamer dude last week.
Still enjoyable, it was much darker than I remember and had some tongue-in-cheek adult humour that I didn't expect from a 3DCG kid's film. It was notable in that it used motion capture, but it applied it well to stylized bodies, with subtle cartoon-like model distortions and weighting added after, making the whole thing feel oddly real, but not too uncanny. Worth a watch if you're in to CG in particular.
>>58659 I'm the same, I watched Winter Soldier because I liked the guns they used on the screens from it. You can go ahead and watch Civil War for an example of that. It's suddenly about Avengers.
>>58689 So another brain fart that it's even a sentence because you are unable to communicate. Learn how to write sentences if you want to participate. Otherwise go bark at google if you want list and recommendations.
I'm rewatching the classic Batman movies currently. These were my childhood and honestly, these are much better than anything Nolan managed to make. Batman and superheroes in general are supposed to be treated lightly, funnily or at most absurdly or in a grotesque way. This is a billionaire who goes out every night to fight crime dressed as a freaking bat, come on. It is not supposed to be epic or realistic. Plus I also dislike how Nolan's trilogy tries to be deep or moralizing. I rewatched the first two Burton movies and there is zero moralizing or preaching in them, just pure crazy fun like it should be.
The Batman in Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) is the best Batman I've seen, though I never read the comics, only watched the cartoons. He enjoys what he is doing, he has no second thoughts about killing violent criminals in self-defense, no stupid "no killing" rule. He has a killer sense of humour and he is openly just as crazy as his enemies. The original Batman movie I liked much better now than as a kid, however in the case of Returns I was slightly disappointed. Returns used to be my favorite Batman movie when I was a child, now I found it good but I appreciated the first movie better. I think it is just that Catwoman, Penguin or the character of Christopher Walken didn't have as much energy or charisma as the Joker of Jack Nicholson. That was one epic performance.
>>58724 I watched them long ago many times, Batman Forever used to be my favorite next to Returns as a kid. We will see how I will like it today.
Batman and Robin, I remember thinking it was the weakest movie when I watched it as a child, now though I prepare for some amusing and hilarious cheesy movie.
>>58645 Okay, I've watched a bunch of MCU movies and skipping to Avengers and Endgame just to be done with it. Those movies are like fast-food from the same chain restaurant, with the same sauce in video form. You're not meant to watch them in quick succession, probably watching one a year was the optimum. They're just so shallow, you're supposed to turn your brain off but I still feel like it insults my intelligence, like I'm watching a cartoon made for kids. I liked some bits like Captain America being slightly depressed about state of USA in the 'future', but as >>58656 pointed out - quips and ugly jewesses like Scarlett Johansson really get on my nerves.
Overall I think watching those movies is a waste of time, at least Star Wars movies had memorable music (not talking about new ones, ain't watching that).
>>57501 thoughts on Adjustment Beurau? A Scanner Darkly?
Or Blade Runner the original or Blade Runner 2049 (which i just got around to watching since >TFW faggots adopted it as a banner to display their lack of creativity.

>>56187 I've been talking about these movies on wizchan for over 3 years now. Yesterday I watched Mad Mad Ghost for the first time. I've been ignoring this one for so long despite having uncle Lam in it because of how cheap and boring it looked but I guess I was in the right mood for it.
This time uncle Lam is uncle Ying, a part-time Tao priest, part-time security guard. He has 5 incompetent acolytes to deal with and a rent he can't afford. Fortunately he's offered a very nice house with a suspiciously low rent. Turns out, to the surprise of no one who watch these films, the house is actually haunted by a ghost couple. This is the premise for the whole thing and now I'll talk about many plot points, so if you want to watch this by yourself (I don't know why you would though) you should stop here. Spoilers ahead.
This movie feels like it didn't have a script beyond the pitch "Uncle Ling moves into a haunted house". The first 30 minutes of this movie we have the ghost husband beating the shit out of her ghost wife to the point it gets uncomfortable. It's like the movie had nothing else to do so it just kept the domestic violence on loop for 30 minutes. Uncle Ying shows up and kick the shit out of the male ghost, expelling him from the house. Then he has a hard time convincing the female ghost to have some self-respect and not to take her husband back. While this is going on we have an excessive amount of padding with slapstick humor with the uncle Ying acolytes doing all sorts of silly shit.
The male ghost finally returns and tries to wins his wife back but she kicks the shit out of guy, forces a ghost divorce on him and go out shopping in Hong Kong's shopping district with the 5 acolytes. And that's it. The plot reaches resolution and is over at this point but we're only 45 minutes in. So how do they extend this to movie length? They make a second plot on top of the first of course. The first and second half of this film have barely any connection with each other.
The second plot involves two guys wanting to dig out a treasure buried in the backyard of the house. We're never given any hint there's a treasure anywhere in this house at first. I should point out the entire movie is filmed inside this house so having a treasure buried in there somewhere is just an excuse to not leave the only location they had to make this film. So the villains rent a room there and start digging. Uncle Ying's students find this suspicious and ask the bad guys what they are up to. Instead of playing it cool they just attack the students outright. They get defeated because the female ghost uses her powers to kick the shit out of them. This of course is padded to hell and back with slaptick humor again.
The bad guys hire a monk to nulify the ghost's powers, bla bla bla, they come in again with machine guns but lose anyway. Uncle Ying and the students dig the treasure up, buy the house and now uncle ying is rich and doesn't need to work as security guard anymore. That and his Tao business of reading people's fortunes is now booming, the end.
This was as bad as it looked right from the start. It's funny though, it's the OK type of bad, at least if you're a fan of the originals and just want to see more of uncle Ying and silly Tao magic.
>>58764 I never watch just one of these. Usually I go for 2 or 3 in one sitting. Next I watched Exorcist Master which I had seen before but I guess it was back when I watched 10 or so of Jiangshi films back to back and they all feel like one big lump now. I didn't remember the ending for some reason but distinctly remember several scenes of it.
This is a 1992 movie where we have uncle Lam as the Tao priest fighting actual vampires again. This time it's a western vampire, just like it was on 1989's Vampire vs Vampire. The plot is pretty much the same, too. You have a catholic priest turned vampire who is sealed inside an abandoned church. A new priest comes in, wants to reopen the church, uncle Lam says no but the priest donates a bunch of shit to the locals and get the church going again regardless of what uncle Lam has to say about it.
This is actually a decent movie with actual effort put into it. The sets are nice and there's a decent story going on. Major spoilers ahead.
The first half of the movie is the setup I mentioned. A Tao priest and a Catholic priest arguing over stuff. Classical cultural clash. It's really weird though because the catholic priest is a Chinese guy who went to study at the Vatican and then returns to China to preach. Yet for some reason he has to be explained to him a bunch of Chinese things, which just felt odd and out of place. He wasn't born abroad or anything like that, this guy speaks the local language fluently. I guess you can't have the cultural clash without it but still felt odd.
The big twist here is that Tao magic doesn't work on Western vampires, so the Tao and the Christian has to unite forces to defeat evil. You see the Christian priest trying out Tao amulets and the Tao priest doing the sign of the cross "just in case". There's also several scenes of uncle Lam's students trying out western clothing donated by the church that they don't know how it works, like a bow tie or bras. I should mention the movie is set in the 1900's probably.
What really surprised me about this film is how bleak it is, specially the ending. Usually you'll have a happy, comedic ending with these but in this film everybody dies! Pretty much the entire village gets infected and once the western vampire dies they just drop dead, and that includes one of uncle Lam's students, the priest, the mayor, his son, uncle Lam's student love interest, the mayor's henchman, the henchman's henchmen, a bunch of locals, pretty much all of the priest's helpers and church goers. By the end of this film this village is pretty much empty. Not the finest hour for the good guys here if you ask me. A Pyrrhic victory this time for the forces of Tao.
Last but not least, I watched Encounter of the Spooky Kind 2. Encounter of the Spooky Kind is actually the movie that originated the whole comedy horror jiangshi movies. The first one is from 1980, so 5 years before the first Mr. Vampire. I feel like both series are set in the same universe but Encounter of the Spooky Kind is focused on Bold Cheung, a poor kung fu student played by Sammo Hung, while Mr. Vampire is focused on uncle Lam. Even if you don't know about this genre it's possible that you've seen Sammo in other movies since he made a bunch of Hollywood stuff as well.
I would actually recommend this film to people even if they don't care about Jiangshi movies. This is a very decent, interesting movie to watch with lots of crazy, nice stuff going on. The setup here is Bold Cheung being engaged to the daughter of a wealthy restaurant owner but can't get married because he's too poor to afford the asking dowry price (80 pounds of cake, 80 pounds of mushrooms, 80 pounds of seaweed and 600 chickens). Cheung gets help from uncle Lam (Master Gau) and opens a rice porridge stand to try to raise enough money for the dowry. Spoilers ahead.
Business don't go well and his future bride who works at the restaurant keeps getting harassed by Mr. Shi, another guy who wants to marry her. He's a nasty fellow but very rich. He also employs or is a friend of a very powerful sorcerer. Their relationship is never very well established. Anyway, Shi asks the sorcerer to kill Cheung so he can finally marry the succubus. They come up with a plan to transfer Cheung's soul to a pig, do so and that's when the fight is on.
While all this is going on, Cheung helps a female ghost to take care of her blind mother which plays on his favor several times. I wont' go into detail but this is a nice side plot to the whole thing.
Anyway, Master Gau uses all sorts of Tao magic to get Cheung's soul back while on the other side the sorcerer does everything he can to prevent that. It's priest vs sorcerer and it's very entertaining. You have magic mirrors, seals, magic drums, serpent man fighters, mummies (yes mummies)and all the good, crazy stuff that make those movies a joy to watch. This is almost as good as the original Mr. Vampire and one of my favorites.
Have any of you watched 'black mirror'? It is a tv show where each episode is independent and portrays a unique distopia caused by near-future technologies. The actors perform well and the main appeal of the show is projecting onto the main actor (different actor in each episode) and living out the distopia that they experience.
Each episode strikes in a unique psychological direction so you will likely find one which functions as a psychological 'shot in the dark'. This graduates the distopia from purgatory to hell, from Hades to Tartarus. The technologies that usher the world into hell, in these episodes, range from things that have already been developed since the show released in 2019, to technologies that are imaginable in 20-30 years.
One particular psychological shot in the dark hit me, and the episode also hit along what appears to be a philosophical weakness of mine, alternate worlds of the 'mind'. Like 'Dream of a Ridiculous Man' which is embedded (would highly recommend to any thoughtful person), but rather than this world being a philosophical beauty like in 'Dream', the character accidentally created a hell for himself in a brain-computer interface and died. The final shock that killed him was the same thing I am afraid of most, seeing my mom develop a mental illness.
That episode rattled me. Since I was shaken by a TV show episode, then my strength of will and my worldview must not be as strong as I imagine it to be.
I watched the first three seasons, I think it is rather hit or miss and I would agree with >>58806 that it is somewhat pretentious. The problem with that kind of defanged fiction is that in a way it serves to get the viewers used to what it appears to be more or less intensely decrying. Sometimes it makes you wonder if it was not what the author had in mind (think of science fiction and dystopia writers, Huxley is the most infamous example…) though I doubt that is the case here, but nevertheless it serves the same purpose. I have heard that they liked the show in China of all places.
just saw ferris bueller's day off, this flick is considered so "iconic" by people it's always being referenced somewhere but I don't see what so special about it, the main character is an obnoxious little bastard who deserved to get busted by the principal
Watched Planet of the Humans, which was a Michael Moore produced documentry that is about the green movement and envionmentalism.
On the one hand it is nice to see environmentalist exposed as the scammers and grifters they really are. On the other hand I was annoyed by them actively avoiding even acknowledging that nuclear exist because it would destroy their narrative. Also totally don't agree with their conclusion their prefered solution is for everyone to live with a FAR lower standard of life and for a massive restriction of human population, though they don't have the balls to say how they think ether of those should be accomplished And par for the course, they fearmonger the shit out of climate change, which was to be expected.
Still, nice of him to put it up free and in HD, and while as sensationalist and manipulative as his other work it is still worth a watch if you are able to do it with a critical eye open.
My two most recent watches are The Swordsman and Hanabi by Takeshi Kitano. The first was a rather run of the mill kidnapping story but the action scenes were great and the actor who played the protagonist was good too. Hanabi is, quite simply, one of the most beautiful films I've ever watched mainly because of the end.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Spaghetti_Western_films Just found this. I can't believe how freaking many westerns those italians made. When people said "spaghetti western" I always thought they were just referring to the clint eastwood ones.
>>59178 The world of Spaghetti Westerns is quite the voyage. If you're interested in some I would recommend Il grande silenzio, Vamos a matar companeros, They Call me Trinity, and The Big Gundown. Italians also made a lot of horror films called giallo and a lot of crime films called poliziotteschi. I don't know how such a small country managed to make all of those.
>>59182 I'll research those and probably watch them. I loved the eastwood movies, there was a certain feel to them to me that's missing in american made westerns, and I'm curious to see if it's present more or less in the other italian made films.
saw the bumblebee transformers movie, it is really not as good as everyone says, the 80s nostalgia stuff that was supposed to be this huge selling point was overplayed, drawn from some corporate list of stock 80s references they always use when peddling retro merchandise, and embarrassingly forced at that, I had to start fast forwarding it, and of course they couldn't possibly make this flick without cramming heavy miscegenation propaganda into the fore
the only entertaining part was transformers doing martial arts, yeah, they're kickass martial artists in this flick instead of crude brawlers or using guns for everything, in the end it wasn't worth it though……
How do you find new stuff to watch? I just browsed through latest releases on IMDB and Metacritic and I feel as if ZOG took a shit on my face. Endless jewish trash.
>>59335 Which genres do you like? There are at least 20 movies in each genre of spaghetti westerns, samurai, giallo, slasher, and poliziottescho that are worth watching for example
Hello Netizens, I just finished the movie Parasite (2019). You may well have watched or at least heard about it as it does indeed seem quite popular and suggested a lot online. This won't be a in-depth review but cursory and may inspire discussion or even a viewing.
I felt this film was a let down but maybe I am hard to please or it could be due to it being overhyped and maybe even both. This movie is not one I will remember and for SK cinema it is not near as good as some other thrillers they have done.
The movie started off strong but turned into a mess and did not go anywhere or provoke much interest from me at all. Stale narrative that brings nothing new at all and could have said a lot more given the potential to make certain statements.
I watched ex-drummer and have to say I am very disappointed. I read this movie was weird and messed up which gained my interest as I thought it may be off beat and creative but the movie is very sloppy. It substitutes good writing and narrative with whatever appears weird. The saving grace is the music and cinematography. The soundtrack is very good and sure to appeal to any fans of music who have "good taste".
This movie is altogether a waste of time and an hour too long. It comes off like it was made by edgy teens
>>59363 Why do you think it is so popular?
it seems most people are quite accepting of any movie with some type of twist and rate it high for exactly that. This movie did not really have a twist so much but the father staying in the basement and the other man prior is a "twist".
The issue may be that it was not realistic at all, at the start the movie was quite realistic with the family moving in and taking various jobs but then it got quite lazy.
I felt this movie really really missed the potential to say something with the moral dilemma that was shown with the family wanting to get ahead but putting other commoners in harms way. It could have even made a point about ability versus privilege and there were a lot of chances for this to get explored but it never did in any sense. Why did the father kill the man of the house? I don't understand that at all. Korean films often do go OVER THE TOP though and become extremely unrealistic but usually it is only with excessive violence. A character can have a boulder dropped on their head 100 times smashing it and then they get up and fight on for example.
Were people impressed by the movie? how?
>>59364 I don’t care for statements. The movie had a decent intrigue showing the family get themselves deeper and deeper into the lie, until it blows up in their faces. It was enjoyable, though the ending was kinda lackluster.
>>59364 I think part of the reason is cronyism and another reason is how it managed to appeal so much to a wide audience while at the same time feeling artsy and as if it had a real message to convey.
Bong Joon Ho is an incredible suck up to anglosphere filmmakers and is friends with Tarantino. They shill each other's movies in their respective countries. It's quite possible that Tarantino did him a few favors to get him recognition with western audiences. I've also watched Bong Joon Ho's Memories of Murder and even that was just ok - better than Parasite but nothing spectacular. The guy isn't that great of a filmmaker in his own right. On the other hand, he also appeals to all of those "i only watch movies that are deep and have a hidden message" crowd because it's obvious that he's trying to convey something that fits this same crowd's ideals which is leftist thought and rich vs poor.
>>59365 >The movie had a decent intrigue showing the family get themselves deeper and deeper into the lie, until it blows up in their faces. It was quite vapid and lackluster in how this came to be though. It started to fall apart as soon as they got rid of the driver IMO. What a big fuck you the ending was it had forced suspense throughout the second half and that made it a real bore. >>59366 I'm surprised it was the same director as memories of murder as that film was at least cohesive, Parasite came across like reading some airport pulp fiction for all it had going for it.
Part of the reason the film left a bad taste in my mouth was how so many scenes which could have had deeper connections to others were simply a way to join the plot together. For example the eccentric child's trauma amounting to no significance which is a running theme with a lot of events in the movie. Am I being overly cynical? a sucker for realism and subtly over larger than life portrayals I may be but it was not enjoyable.
Could you share what your favorite titles are so I can take a peep? Anything very depressing also would be great as a side suggestion.
I do wish I could enjoy movies like others and it leaves me feeling I am too dumb to appreciate media even if I do understand it and this is often the case with books but sometimes a movie/something will grip me and it has to be very good.
>>59368 It's fair for people to see a movie like Parasite and expect more character development out of it. It's not something like John Wick where you know what you are in for before you go into it and leave feeling content. Like I mentioned before, I'd like to give Bong Joon Ho the benefit of the doubt and think that maybe there was an original script that was better. As someone who is weary of Tarantino I'm just skeptical of anything that comes into contact with him.
Sure. Cold Fish by Sion Sono, Serie noire by Alain Corneau (I'm actually surprised more wizards don't know about this one), Spoorloos by George Sluizer, Das Weisse Band and Funny Games by Michael Haneke, Dogman by Matteo Garone, and Dragged Across Concrete by S. Craig Zahler, Il grande silenzio by Sergio Corbucci, High and Low by Akira Kurosawa. All of these have very depressing and bleak tones.
Just remember that movies are also made by people which means they can be imperfect and highly subjective to the point where not everyone will fully appreciate them. Your best bet may be to just watch casual movies with heavy action and fun for a bit just to try and enjoy something.
>>59369 thanks for the suggestions I will be sure to watch them! as for casual movies I try watch anything and it is hard to enjoy it. I spent years just binging TV shows and movies but can't sit down and enjoy casual stuff now sadly.
(spoiler free) I watched Nil by mouth and Naked (1993) and wanted to do a post to share these gems with others here who they may appeal to.
Nil by mouth is easily one of the best films I have watched and is brutal realism of the depressing existence that life can be. Nil by mouth is about the dregs of society and is extremely realistic in its depiction. I rate this movie 10/10 for being such a successful piece of art. I rate this movie so highly because it is a gritty realism in the essence and every aspect of the film lends itself to achieving the atmosphere of dread without any shock and awe.
Naked is worth a watch as well but not as good as Nil by mouth it is actually covering different subject matter. The movie has merit and does itself justice by being unique. Much less wizardly than the other movie but /dep/ rightly so.
Broken (2012) This movie was good watching it has some rough edges without going over the top as it employs realism. The movie is about a succubus and a few over characters including a wizard type character. It is a sad movie but hopeful in its own way. The soundtrack is good. 6.5/10 I rate it
This is England (2006) A brutal movie that is gritty and harsh while retaining realism. The movie is about polfags irl and is a coming of age tale. The soundtrack is very good for this movie. 8.5/10
>>58645 the movies are ugly the cinematography is completely devoid of any ambition or message and only exists as a medium for storytelling pablum unironically I think this is the best criticism of them, they all look exactly the same and just visually very ugly and sterile
of course that happens when it's all CGI shit for the ADHD modern audience
>>58645 Every super hero movie I have seen has been dogshit including the joker. They lack any redeeming qualities for a discerning viewer unless hero shit is their autist obsession. They bring nothing to the table they tell no story they are eye candy for man babies who outgrew daddy shaking keys in front of their face.
An elephant sitting still (2018) A four hour long suicide note. other than the atmosphere this movie did not start to congeal into a cohesive story until over an hour had passed but I could tell it was good and deserved a watch. The director killed himself shortly after completion of the film. This movie is not edgy or immature in how it presents reality it does not make anything larger than life it simply displays life and as many wizards know it is life that is the most horrid.
>>59387 >>59398 >>59402 It is starting to annoy me that you keep saying things that aren't even remotly realistic realistic and displaying reality even though the movies are artsy fartsy heavily stylized and unreal.
The movies don't present reality. They aren't realistic. They don't display life as it really is. They are artisic depictions that intentionally stray from reality to make a emotional or intellectual point about a aspect of the world that they are highlighting.
I know it's a autistic thing to get annoyed about but still.
>>59422 If you define realistic as being shot with a go pro strapped to your head and essentially being a documentary sure but these movies are very realistic compared to other films. Nil by mouth is the most realistic depiction of street cretins I have seen.
None of these movies are fartsy artsy at all in the sense of the term I am familiar with except Naked (1993) in some ways. I have not reviewed the movies I have been watching and disliking because they are far fetched in how they present ideas and interactions.
I thing the sentence >They are artisic depictions that intentionally stray from reality to make a emotional or intellectual point about a aspect of the world that they are highlighting
It crystal clear in it's meaning. If you can't understand that sentence then it's your problem.
>>59424 more like it is your problem for being so hung on small details like some autist. If you cannot see how some movies are realistic depictions it is your problem.
If you cannot differentiate between some hollywoo shit and kitchen sink type indie film because of semantics you have the problem.
>>59427 you are stating that movies are filmed and not real life. are you even old enough to use this website? because you sure sound like you have an under-developed brain
Finally made it back to the theater for the first time since all this madness started. Felt bad for them as they were so short staffed that every single worker on staff was behind the concessions stand and they sold tickets from there. They had no one on front and one of them had to periodically scurry between infrequent customers to clean up after a showing. It was clear the place was in decline. It's the only theater for 50 miles so if they close down it will be the end of me going to the movies.
Anyway I watched Promare (Redux) which I enjoyed even if the ticket was overpriced since it was a special event thing. Only me and one other person were there. On the one hand it made for great viewing, but on the other hand it again made me feel bad for the theater because having a showing be that empty on a sunday afternoon is a pretty bad sign.
I wish there were better movies out so I would have a excuse to go more often but for the past year nothing that has came out looked good enough to go to the theaters for. It is possible that they will close soon and this would be the last theater experience I have for many years. I mean I hope they pull through and stay open but I am not optimistic about the odds after going inside and seeing how they are barely hanging on.
i love movies but i find that 99% of them are dogshit, either because they try to be hollywood blockbusters or they have cringy normalnigger romance stories. like action movies, comedy, and romance are all dogshit. sci-fi and fantasy are LARP for manchildren, horror movies are for succubi and teenagers. there are like 2 good sport movies and the rest is all normalnigger garbage, and this is coming from a huge sportsball fan. drama and biographies can be really good, but most of them are dogshit and usually have cringy romance subplots.
it seems like the only genres that have consistently good movies without any unwizardly romance cringe are crime, war, westerns, and historical epics. am i missing something? i feel like there should be a lot more than this
>>59526 I like depressing movies and use google to find new movies to watch. Bestsimilar.com is actually really good for finding similar movies. I agree that nearly all movies are garbage and it is rare I find anything I enjoy let alone tolerable to watch. Depressing films are my go to without any fantasy bullshit involved. Check out some of the movies I did light reviews on above like nil by mouth >>59527 99% of everything is shit though espcially anime. Some of us don't enjoy so called classics like The godfather or other overhyped meme movies. consider yourself lucky for being able to consume trash.
>>59528 If you don't like movies then why go into a thread asking for movies. It would be like going on to /jp/ in the anime threads while hating anime and asking for anime suggestions.
If you think nearly everything in a hobby/art-form is garbage then find a different hobby and do something else that you will more likely enjoy. Don't pester people with edgy childish bullshit post for enjoying what you don't.
>>59529 The other poster and I both enjoy movies but find it hard to tolerate the garbage which is the near totality of the media. Why are you so offensed over someone saying they do not like most movies? I read and do other things as well but rarely enjoy any of it so why should I stop participating in these topics just because I dont guzzle the bullshit and I am picky? This is like saying you can't post in the cooking thread if you are a picky eater
>>59530 >be obnoxous and edgy while declaring the thing the people in the thread enjoy garbage >Declare that the thing that the thread topic is about is bad and anyone into it is bad >why so "offensed"?
>>59531 Is it so shocking to hear another(s) opinion that most content created lacks substance? most movies have profit as their only motivation and creative works often fall flat. I never attacked anyone for enjoying movies I have been watching them all day but they are rarely good and that is subjective but you seriously cannot be telling me that 99% of (insert content in whatever form here) is good? You must be trolling son
>>59526 It truly seems to me that movies aren't really your thing, especially if you only want to watch "depressing" movies which are also made by normalfags. Maybe you would be better off reading some Dostoevsky or something
>>59536 I am watching a movie while I type this. Why do you say movies are not my thing if I dislike nearly all of them? I prefer good books but I dislike nearly all books also but prefer a good book to a good movie. I read a book today as well as watched 2 movies.
I watch all types of movies but enjoy depressing movies the best it is not as if I am new to watching movies. What is so outrageous about only finding a few movies out of many worth watching. I envy you for being able to enjoy movies and I do not say that in a condescending way.
>>59537 Because while of course they can be artistic, they are mainly for entertainment and escapism. I can get not liking a few genres but you mentioned how you dislike action, comedy, scifi, horror which make up a bulk of all movies made. Have you tried watching arthouse?
>>59402 >>59398 >>59387 The way you talk about things being realistic or not unintentionally reminds me of the main character of the movie The Transfiguration where he is always talking about how realistic or not various vampire movies are.
>>59541 You must have me confused with another wiz- I never said I dislike comdedy, scifi, horror. I dislike action and I dislike horror of the visual kind but in truth I enjoy movies that are good and are creative or don well and nearly all horror besides psychological that does not rely on tricking the viewer is any good. I have watched a lot of arthouse and most is pretentious.
Just face the fact that nearly all movies are bad. >>59545 I like realism I hate anything being stylized and that is just me but I cannot understand why people insist on hollywood scenes and unrealistic bullshit in every movie. is the movie you mentioned worth watching?
>>59547 You wouldn't like it. It has a interracial relationship in it, and despite being a tragedy, it isn't depressive in tone or atmosphere. Also it won awards, which you implied in other post was something you used as a indication of films you don't like.
>>59548 SO you aim to portray me as some polfag? You are confusing me with another person and awards often mean nothing just look at nearly all movies that get them and are garbage but jerked off hard.
>>59551 >complains >confirms that they indeed wouldn't like it You make me tired. I too am now recommending that you just find some other hobby. Not because you hate nearly all movies, but because I am just tired of your shit.
>>59552 What percentage of movies do you like? did I speak bad of a movie you hold close to your heart and unintentionally hurt you somewhat? I am not understanding why someone is being attacked so much for simply finding most movies as boring drivel when this is obviously the case. I am not a casual movie fan I take everything into consideration and even amazing cinematography will wet my ears but it must be said most movies are not even worth watching as a distraction alone and I will reiterate again the same is true for nearly everything.
>>59527 >>59536 I don’t only like depressing movies, although a lot of movies I like are depressing. For example, I tried watching the machinist and turned it off because it was such a cliche normalnigger movie. I feel like insomnia is one of those tropes that normalcattle just eat up because they think it’s deep or something.
A lot of movies for me are b rated wanna be blockbusters. The goal is always to tell the story of some normalshitter who is living out his fantasies and you are supposed to identify with him. I end up despising these self insert characters and wishing that they fail in their hero’s journey. When I watch these movies it just makes me sick with spite. If I wanted to experience these things I should just be able to go out and do it myself and not have to resort to parasocial interaction and escapism. It seems to me a cruel joke to preclude me from having a good life and forcing me to live through the experiences of others. Am I supposed to be content with this? Why can’t I do those things? Fuck them. These jew directors and chadlite actors aren’t getting my money.
I prefer movies that are aggressively challenging and overtly critical of something. I like it better when the message is more than “haha look at this hot actress we paid 20 million dollars to be in our movie oh LMAO sex joke now its time btfo the bad guy”. I can better relate to a movie with a message about the dangers of consumerism or the broken contacts of emotional chemistry in the technological society than another meme blockbuster about someone who is more successful than me with opportunities I never had
>>59580 >about someone who is more successful than me with opportunities I never had I don't understand how a wizard could care about this at all. How could you care about normalfags idea of success if you are not one? There are 101 reasons to hate block buster garbage but envy is not one of them.
>>59581 Because the jokes on us. Our world is a world of the advantage of some at the expense of others. Our daily life, everything we do, and every interaction with others is a state of war and a state of slavery. When I watch these movies, especially the ones with all the celebrity worship, it’s just like pouring salt in the wound. Here are the men of lust greed and glory of our multi billion dollar industry, proudly displaying all that is good and beautiful which they have obtained at your expense. How does that not make your blood boil?
>>59582 >Because the jokes on us Don't try to drag me down into your delusion. The only joke on me is existence and everyone living is ripe for mocking equally due to this. >When I watch these movies, especially the ones with all the celebrity worship, it’s just like pouring salt in the wound. Only because you are like a child spiritually or less than human really since children aren ot born poisoned with vanity to the extent you are. You cry about celeb worship but you are just jealous you have a one track mind and cannot see beyond your stupid desires. >How does that not make your blood boil? Why would it make my blood boil? I do not care for what others have and there is little I want and nothing I desire I do not posess and even that does not make me happy. How would being rich make me happy? why would I want to be a celb and stalked by paparazzi? You just sound like some butt hurt crab who wishes they could be a normalfag you worship normalfags lol. Why are you even posting here instead of one of the many forums made especially for your type?
>>59582 You say that you like these depressing movies that aren't normalnigger trash, but do you realize who directed one of the ones you posted above? Those that you are describing, Gary Oldman who directed Nil by mouth, is part of those same ones. What makes my blood boil even more is when millionaires get rich off of the themes of suffering that they didn't have to go through. That's why I'd rather be entertained with some action movie than pretend that I can relate to some film that a richfag made for fun.
>>57497 I watched this 1982 adaptation of a book, written by the same guy that wrote Watership Down and adapted by the same people that adapted Watership Down. My dad made me watch Watership Down when I was a kid and I didn’t like or get it at all — I don’t know if I was just too young or if it’s actually bad, but this one was great. It’s an extreme downer, though, to the point that in the book version the editor made the writer change the ending to a happier one (which isn’t in the movie). I cried for the first time in months/years, and this enters the very short list of movies that made me cry.
Just watched Halloween Kills. I enjoyed it more than the average horror/slasher film. It was more gruesome and brutal than I expected. Every scene with Myers was a pleasure to watch. It was refreshing to see niggers and gays being killed without any political correctness or padding to prepare for it.
>>59777 I thought it was terrible but I too am happy with the new trend of seeing niggers and fags get massacred too. The new Scream probably won't disappoint in that field either
The only problem I have is that new age horror tends to focus more on brutality and gore rather than the sense of dread and hopelessness that used to define the genre
>>59817 I know it's a dumb question, but there are people out there that genuinely think that anime is better than film because It references philosophy better, like attack on titan. I'm not joking
I watched the new dune movie today, it was really good and felt pretty faithful to the book. I think it covers the first two books but I read them a while ago so I can’t say for certain. The directors did a great casting job for all the characters I think, Paul’s actor plays the role well, almost everyone looks exactly how I’d have imagined. The best space scifi I’ve seen since those crappy disney star wars flicks. Some people told me that it skips over a bit of world building to get straight to the “action”, but I think that it’s ok because the beginning of the “story” really has nothing much to do with the rest, it’s always been just a short build up for the main course. We’ll really see how it goes in the sequel though because it’s going to contain basically the meat of it all.
>>57497 Had a Tom Cruise binge the past few weeks.
I watch The Last Samurai every year in the autumn, one of my favourite films. Beautifully shot and a lovely, if idealistic, story about a guy finally finding inner peace, which should resonate with many here.
Another Tom Cruise favourite I watched recently is Edge of Tomorrow, a great sci-fi movie with a solid plot and "stronk womyn" done right for once.
Finally, my final top-3 Cruise favourite is Mission Impossible. The first one is the only one I like, the focus is more on realism and suspense than over-the-top actions scenes.
>>59324 There are maybe two good films every year now at best, the rest is generally 'meh' or rubbish. My tastes are actually pretty similar to Critical Drinker on YT, so I would glance at his recommendations to avoid having to go through modern stuff myself (It's how I discovered Ford vs Ferrari, a film I have not seen advertized or recommended anywhere else). Otherwise, I just go back to watch older stuff and watch favorites again when I feel like it.
SPOILERS I rewatched The Matrix (after 20 years), and was very disappointed. It has an interesting core concept, but is so full of Hollywood cliches to the point of ruin. Things like the Trinity melodrama were really necessary? How ridiculous can be the scene where Neo resurrects after a kiss? The "real world" scenes had not much impact, they were all too clean, clear, and everything looked too good, not enough contrast. The fight scenes were mostly silly as well, but there were some nice action sequences, like the helicopter part. The acting is also not great, Morpheus and Smith were the only good ones. Neo was particularly terrible. The experience made me wonder to what extent the movie's reputation is justified.
>>59850 Many of these action movies make a lot more sense and look a lot cooler when you're 11. There's this film called The 13th Warrior that I watched when I was around 10 or so and I was absolutely blown away by it. It was simply the coolest thing ever. Then I watched again as an adult and it was really underwhelming.
Precious few movies can entertain a jaded audience. Alien is one of the few I still find it nice after all these years. I still like the first Lord of the Rings movie, I don't care about the other two though.
>>59831 >>59832 >How jarring were the forced diversity hires? The movie is extremely faithful to the book, I dont think there were any diversity hires. The Atreides were all white people, Harkonen where all pale brutish slobs, and the fremen were niggers/sandniggers, all was good and accurate in my opinion >They're fantasy scifi is fantasy, it is a subset of fantasy with certain key elements, it's scifi
Strange, I find new appreciation for The Matrix on later viewing but if I am being totally honest these days I find Alien a bore to watch. Alien relies heavily on suspense, atmosphere, and sense of dread. All of that is drained away when you are quite acquainted with the film to the point of knowing production details. With that the story just isn't though provoking, the way the story is told isn't anything especially interesting, and it just isn't entertaining to watch when the horror is drained away. So there is nothing to go back to for me when it comes to Alien. It is a good movie and I do recommend it as something just about everyone should see once, maybe twice. After that it loses it's magic.
The way I feel about Alien is the same way I feel about movies like The Sixth Sense.
Meanwhile I have seen The Matrix over a dozen times and still find it entertaining to this day. It is one of the rare movies that gets better the more you think about it.
>>59858 It's not strange. Each person has their own tastes. To me Matrix feels like a comic book. The characters behave like they got extracted from anime. I just can't enjoy it at all. Alien on the other hand I can take it seriously and enjoy it even if I know the ending. The idea of horror in space just feels right to me, I don't know. But there you go, different tastes.
It's funny, I liked the first Alien so much that I endured decades of subsequent shit Alien movies. I even watched all the horrible fucking prequels they shat out recently. The same thing happened to me with the movie Cube. I wasted so much time on those god fucking awful sequels.
>>59858 My problem is that it felt more like a generic Hollywood movie with just a different setting, not enough focus on the lore instead of an average plot and character relations. By now what I enjoy the most in the Matrix universe are some Animatrix segments, they deliver what I expected.
>>59869 Your expectations were falty and that is the problem. Also if they tried to dive into the deep lore of the movie it would have murdered the pacing and cause the movie to be too damn long. It is actually one of the big things wrong with the sequels. They didn't keep things as tight and lean, leading to pacing issues, exposition dumps that were just plain bad, and messing up the coherence and flow of the films.
To put it short, if things were done your way it would make the movie far worse with no pay off.
>>59830 They cut out most of the complexity of the book's plot, mainly just keeping stuff that is important for the central premise. Folks who are unfamiliar with the series are going to miss out on a lot of the things that made Dune great. It was still a good movie, with a good aesthetic. They took a few things in a different direction than the book, but it worked pretty well. It was nice to see Dune brought to life by an expert team.
Weird thing is, in the theater I saw it in on opening night, about half the crowd was old or solo. I guess in spite all the hype, it's mostly old Dune fans that watched Dune. Or maybe it was just my showing.
>>59831 >>59832 The diversity hires were not at all jarring. In fact, I'm not convinced they were diversity hires. I've heard folks complain about a black succubus being cast as Kynes, but she did a great job and I don't think sex and race are really a fundamental part of Kynes' character anyway. I despise SJW pandering as much as the next bloke, but I had no problem with any of the casting in Dune. Except Stilgar.
>>59852 Depiction of Fremen as arabic may seem like the obvious choice, but in the book, there is at least one reference to a Fremen with blonde hair. Since the story takes place 1000s of years in the future on a different planet, all bets are off regarding what peoples the Fremen are descended from.
>>59840 If so, he missed the point. The effects of spice are biological. Time travel is a common enough sci-fi trope that a biological form of prescience should be possible in a sci-fi setting. After all, there is plenty of psychic bullshit in early sci-fi. Spice is used as a ritual intoxicant, but that is also true of a lot of real-life drugs such as peyote and ayahuasca. Just because they are used for magic does not mean that magic is actually real. Almost all of the religious stuff in Dune is fabricated by political figures as a means of control. None of these messiahs, saints, or God Emperors actually believe the religions that they lead. Failing to understand this was one of the many fuckups of the 1984 film. There is no magic in Dune, only science and politics.
>>59881 >there is no magic in Dune Only in the way that advanced technology is basically magic. Also the spice is a necessary thing for space travel as you need the effects to be able to navigate right? It’s not just a placebo. And there’s some other pretty magical things that happen like the power of the voice and honestly the whole bene gesserit thing relies on some pretty magical abilities.
>>59884 Sure. But the possibility of remote viewing and mind control were being investigated by American, British and Russian intelligence agencies under scientific premises at around the same time that Dune was written, so psychic stuff was still on the table for science fiction. Even the psychic elements of Ender's Game wasn't scientifically implausible at the time it was written. Nonetheless, like you say, Dune is a basically perfect example of Arthur C. Clark's statement that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
>>59888 > American, British and Russian intelligence agencies under scientific premises at around the same time that Dune was written, so psychic stuff was still on the table for science fiction That explains what was up with starship troopers then.
>>59889 With the ESP/psychic stuff, yeah. It was kind of a thing in a lot of sci-fi at the time even when it doesn't seem like it would fit by modern standards. Since such stuff is now seen more as magic then science. There was a lot of legitimate scientific study into mental phenomenon at the time and the results weren't in so it was fertile ground for writers to speculate how such a "science" will develop. Then 20 years later the results were in and it all turned out to be bunk. Sort of how in a lot of older stories the power of hypnotism/mesmerism was way overstated due to being poorly understood by the public at large.
>>59897 There are around the same number of serious parapsychologist as there are serious alchemist, and they are taken equally seriously in the scientific community these days. It has been so thoroughly and utterly debunked by experimentation that there is simply no where for legitimate research to go.
>>59899 On a personal level, probably Excision. But it's only because I have watched several people slide down the path of delusion and madness to do something horrible so watching it in a movie had me all kinds of fucked up.
Best depressing film (which is different from most depressing which is personal and subjective) would be Schindler’s List. It is a masterpiece of the art-form of film. From technical, to writing, to acting, there is nothing really to find fault with in the execution. And the subject matter is indeed grim and depressing.
There is also passion of the Christ and Martyrs if watching someone suffer well beyond the breaking point bums you out. But personally after a certain point I just turn off my empathy so it's stops effecting me. But I have known normies who were emotional wrecks after watching ether film.
>>59901 >schindlers list Nope not for me comrade and not because I have an aversion to jews. I find movies depressing when it is about individuals that never had a chance and it is a lonely struggle and life is fucking them just like real life. I do not see what is sad about schindlers list beyond the obvious theme? it lacks sophistication and depth. Long time since I seen it but thats my 2 bob. >passion of the christ depressing I agree but overall it relied on visuals to evoke emotion I would have liked to have seen Jesus with his disciples for some time prior to him being betrayed in order to really get that emotional impact.
Gore is not needed for impact and can detract IMO.
>>59902 I mentioned Schindler's List not because it is most depressing, but because it is the most well made depressing film.
Sort of how Citizen Kane is extraordinarily well made to the point of being a masterpeice of the art form of film, but isn't even close to the most compelling drama. In fact personally beyond using it as a practical example of film concepts done correctly, I found it a bit boring as just a movie for pure entertainment.
>>59903 Maybe I can settle with difference of opinion. I mentioned some of the other movies that are well made and very good. People say the joker was depressing but I did not agree I always pick holes into everything I consume and rarely anything escapes my critical nature. People could say melancholy is a very depressing movie that is well done but I disagree even if the cinematography is done well. The masterpiece of drama for me is 12 angry men FYI or bicycle thief for another depressing old film.
Due to doing a bunch of random searching looking for something else I heard of a old film called Momo. Went in mostly blind but the rather sparse description lead me to think it was a film about a little succubus who helps random towns people through active listening. Which for the first 1/4 of the film was somewhat accurate, but holy fucking shit did the film go off the rails into wtf land unexpectedly. Rather than it being about active listening or whatever it was really about time. Anyway, apparently it is based on a book, and it just so happens that my Mom read the book in her youth but never knew there was a movie made of it (which makes sense since the the movie is originally German, with the English cut being pretty obscure). Now I kinda want to track down the book myself, because I feel a lot of stuff was made unclear in the translation from book to film.
>>59904 >The masterpiece of drama for me is 12 angry men >bare minimal cinematography >mostly shot reverse shot with maybe a few angle changes >audio is totally ordinary >etc.
I think we are talking about entirely different things. 12 angry men has a great script as was well acted but in literally ever other regard it was totally unexceptional. Even quite plain to the point of being minimalistic compared to other films at the time as far as production. Not saying it's bad. In fact due to the performances of the actors and the quality of the adapted script it's quite good, but it doesn't take advantage of the change in the medium from stage play to film.
Haven't watch the bicycle theif because I find most so called neo-realist films to be unbelievably dull, and I don't think the bicycle theif will be a exception since the trailer looks kind of boring too.
Dune was bad and gay. Also not science fiction. It's all magic powers and religious shit about a handsome chosen prince and noble savages. Literal fairy tale for children. Nauseating faggy trash.
>>60001 I didn't say the book is bad, I actually like Dune a lot, but it is a medieval fantasy in space with scifi elements. I loved it but it's silly as hell. If you go in expecting a more serious space scenario like a redezvous with rama or something then yeah, you'll probably end up like >>59991. But that is his own fault.
>>60105 I still have no idea who that is and still suspect it has to be some kind of a running joke that people act as if this literally who ugly nigress is some famous persona everyone should recognize.
>>59526 >am i missing something? No not really, the most wizardly movie are those lacking succubi and as you mentioned those are usually crime, war, westerns and certain historical movies. You have to look past what the critics are buzzing about because the good movies usually pass under the radar.
Watched Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions. They are much better than the first one. They don't really have a very well knit plot, a lot seems to just happen randomly, and the excess of mundane drama, such as the several romantic subplots, detracts a lot from everything else, but they are definitely enjoyable.
The concept and lore are well explored, and there are some nice actions scenes. I just can't help finding the fighting and shooting scenes that happen inside the matrix to be too silly.
Also, I wonder how Keanu Reaves even has a job as an actor, he is absolutely terrible.
I’ve finally watched the original Tarkovsky’s Stalker from 1979. Having an idea what I was getting into, I made sure to not watch a second of the movie sober. In my opinion, it’s one of the movies that are meant to be watched as fucked up as possible. Not necessarily because it would be too boring otherwise with its menacing 162 minutes of runtime, but because the movie is targeting your senses in a different manner than regular movies. As far as plot or characters go, it’s as simple as it gets – three men – Writer, Professor and Stalker head into the Zone, where they search for a wish-fulfilling chamber. I immensely enjoyed the long shots of the Zone’s landscapes, as well as the simple philosophical conversations between the characters. The movie is not necessarily very deep as far as words or sentences used in it go, but overall there is some deeper substance to it for sure. It has definitely given me some food for thought for the next few days. Professor has definitely made it to the top of my list of relatable characters in movies.
>>60299 Megaman looks inherently too cartoonish to be live action. Sonic and pikachu were made into generic talking animal sidekicks and supporting characters in their own movies, but I wonder what's the idea behind choosing Megaman. Maybe it will be like Alita with a mix of animation and live action that makes every character looks abominable.
>>60317 I thought maybe it would be a megaman X live action movie or something when I first heard about it which I could somewhat imagine being done, but classic megaman with live actors… I'm just hoping for the worst so at least I can laugh
>>60340 The thing is they actually don't. Normies hate that shit just as much as you probably do in most cases. It's the out of touch studio people and assholes with fucked up agendas that are the main ones to push the trend. Audiences (aka mostly normies) have been very vocal in how much they don't like it.
>>60342 THEN WHY DO THEY KEEP MAKING THEM There's clearly enough retards out there shelling out to see these trainwrecks that they are confident they can turn a profit every time they shit them out.
>>60343 The assholes with fucked up agendas don't do it for profit, they do it because breaking things for their ideology is what they believe will eventually bring about utopia through revolution.
Out of touch studio people are out of touch and thus make bad choices based on bad information.
Most of these travesties put to film aren't profitable.
>>60342 >>60344 They're not out of touch. They're some of the absolutely best informed people in the world and they know exactly what they're doing. Profit is not an issue and neither are the opinions of end consumers. Don't tell me you believe in the "get woke go broke" wishful thinking.
>>60343 Because they want you to watch. It's not about money.
>>60432 >They're some of the absolutely best informed people in the world and they know exactly what they're doing. This is comically and blatantly false. Which would be very apparent if you knew anything about the biz.
>>60344 >breaking things for their ideology is what they believe will eventually bring about utopia through revolution. What do you mean by this, do they want to make movies boring and shit so people dont spend their time watching it and do something good with their lives? If so I can get behind that but looking at the state of the world and everyone, It doesnt seem to be working
>>60454 Wouldn't bet on that, they are always overproduced and have some pretense of being "epic" or meaningful. Compare the Taiwanese Dragon Ball, fun bad-good type, with Hollywoodian Dragon Ball, just plain bad.
>>60474 I plan on seeing it this Sunday and I feel quite a bit of trepidation at it being very long and likely very bad. If it's really boring or annoying then 2 and a half hours will be unbearable.
>>60484 It’s right on the cusp of quality that imageboard users will look at. The source material has clout, and so the narrative and overall content of the movie is solid, but it has a lot of the failings most people deride modern movies for.
Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be it still wasn't even close to good. Mostly it was just poorly paced with some of the worst casting choices I have seen in a long time. It was easily the worst of the matrix franchise in almost every regard. The action was off in the way it was shot, the acting was meh, the music was pretty mediocre, the effects were nothing exceptional, etc. Every aspect of it was aggressively mediocre, made worse with the bloated run time, and it's constant call backs to far better more culturally relevant films. This movie will not have a significant impact. It will be mostly forgotten and truly shouldn't have happened.
If I was to give it a rating it would be 2 out of 5. Save your money and pirate it at home where you can pause it to take breaks if you really must see it. It isn't a train wreck, it's watching a old pro wrestlers who can't let go of his glory days try to make a return but just can't preform so it's sad and boring watching him stumble around the ring.
>>60489 Questions 1.) I heard they cast a new actor to play Morpheus. This is strange to me, as Laurence Fishburne IS Morpheus. How did they write this in? Or is it not explained at all? 2.) How was Keanu Reeves’ performance? Assuming you’re referring to him “stumbling around the ring” and attempting to bring back his “glory days”, I have to disagree. I watched the John Wick films recently and I enjoyed them quite a bit. Sort of had an Oldboy feel to it, but more easy-watching and hedonistic. I’d even go so far as to say Keanu has gotten better with age. He has a world-weary, bittersweet way about him. I thought his performance in the Devil’s Advocate was better than his performance in Speed, for instance, though I enjoyed both equally.
>>60489 I thought it would be just an excuse to justify Matrix being actually about becoming a tranny or an attempt to dissuade the use of "red pill" and associated imagery in politics, but I haven't seen any complaint about that until now, so I might give it a try.
>>60492 It would’ve been hilarious if it was all about how in the Matrix, you can be anyone you want, so Neo decided to return to the Matrix and live as a succ.
Watched Sing 2 to cheer myself up. Never seen the first one but this one wasn't too bad. Just a standard by the numbers jukebox Musical that did improve my mood. Nothing exceptional just very middle of the road, which is too be expected of illumination films.
Think I am done for today at the movies. I am leaving to get some sleep.
>>60490 Wasn't talking about Keanu with that old wrestler comment. I was talkiNg about the Wachowskis. Though if I am being honest his acting in this film was pretty phoned in, which is saying something since he isn't the greatest actor to start with.
>>57497 I watched Encanto. Wasn't expecting much, but enjoyed it more than I thought. Enjoyed the music and felt bad for Uncle Bruno. Very easily skipable, but is a fun time waster
>>60505 >please argue with me over stupid shit that doesn't matter >I need the negative attention to give my life meaning no one cares about changing your mind or ignorant opinions. Go away troll
I watched nightmare alley. I went into kinda excited but did it disappoint. The plot goes nowhere, every character is an asshole, and by the end of the film not a single character has grown. It’s just a movie about dumb assholes being dumb assholes to each other.
>>60541 how did that chair just explode into all its parts. maybe if she was standing up and she fell back i could see it breaking, but she was sitting and most of the force from the shovel went forward towards the table. i guess it is a shitty chair
alsothe hanging light behind the man, it is stationary when he first swings, but after it cuts it is swinging
The Last Duel. Don't waste your time, just imagine a shameless copy of Rashomon but 'fixed' by the usual suspects to conform with the requirements of the ruling ideology. As I watched it I got a creeping feeling that this must have been written by a w*man… a w*man of a very particular race characterized by huge hooked noses. I regret to inform you that I was correct. Here's a synopsis for you: men bad, stupid, violent and rapists. The Church bad and rapists. The indigenous European royalty and aristocracy bad and bumbling idiots, probably rapists too. W*myn smart, funny, brave and stunning. Men can only succeed or do the right thing when controlled by w*myn. W*myn should rule the world but men use violence and rape to hold them back. Believe all w*myn. #MeToo. Europeanism very very bad and you should be ashamed of being an oppressor, goy. Fight choreography is predictably trash. Brief battle scenes are depicted as usual: two loose mobs run into each other, the lead actors proceed to flail their props at armored extras who are reduced to blood-spraying corpses with a single blow. The final duel is slightly better in terms of treating armor as more than plastic props, otherwise it's mostly a display of useless chopping moves. Hollywood-y cling clang bullshit in glorious motion blur shaky cam. A staggering 10 second segment of the fight has both characters half-swording and not being retarded. Striking with pommels and crossguards is shown twice. The final part of the duel features rondel daggers which rarely appear in movies. Running time 133 minutes, perfect for masochists. Thank you ZOG for taking a Japanese classic and making it unbearable in every possible way, very cool.
I used to love children of men (2006) for its aesthetics and cinematography but after becoming more of an antinatalist I kind of hate it now since it aims to beat the viewer over the head about how human population decline ultimately leading to extinction of the species is some sort of "bad" thing. I just view it as moralistic breeder natalist propaganda now. Just look at one of the posters for this flick: >no children. No future. No hope My response is "so what? who cares?" How is any of that a bad thing? Pure human arrogance and self-righteousness to fear a world where their kind may not be around anymore.
