All you need to begin drawing is a pencil and some paper
Feel free to post any drawings of yours in this thread. Illustration, doodle, traditional, digital - anything goes. Discussion on skillbuilding techniques and fair critique of other wizards' work is welcome.
had a few boxes left from online shopping, figured I actually try and do something instead of being the same worthless thing. Made a spice rack out of papermashe, figured I first ground it with white wall paint. The paint works great on my wall BUT NOT on this, holy shit what a mess. I had it dry for several days and it was still awkward. It also didnt work well to use it along side of acryl colors to save on white. Paint != Paint, that lesson is learned. Since it was going to be a spice rack, it obv. had to be Dune themed. Figured I add some nice 3D effect with the lettering. Figured wrong. "The Spice is vital" was done first and with cardboard cutouts. They were horrible to handle and gave no "depth", so I first tried to stack them wich didnt do shit, then just had them "sideways" to give it height. Never Again. "For Space travel" was done with a mix of cardboard cut out with a lot of layers of tissue added to them. Just as bad. These two rows took me afternoon to evening each, roughly 5-8 hours. I was slow. The letters at the top were last and I made them with tinfoil, much easier to work with. Since I had no experience I tried this "dry brushing" out on the first two words. As you may guess I gave up after the third word seeing that this 3D effect I hoped it would have simply wouldnt happen. Was happy about my colours though. Paid 30 i.o.u.'s for them and got a nice range of colours in small tubes. Also surprised about how much paint you can get out of a single drop!
I have a single figurine wich I tried to paint today. ~2:30 hours. The smaller abonimation was done with the leftover paint from my spice rack. The left one I tried today, completely messed up the water ratio for thinning. Did skincolour first since it was the brightest. Wanted to have a very thing black since her dress was lighting up - you can see the result, I could not prevent it. Messed up the eye with a misplaced stroke and tried to fix it with a cotton swab - does not work. This is a occasion were my bad eyesight is actually nice. Blurry enough my brain adds and forms the "painting" to look passable. At this point let it be known if I dont wear glasses I actually see thing lights like the one on my router double.
After the spicerack I had so much glue left over i tried making some figurines out of papermache. It was fun, no idea about painting it but if its going to be like my Rack or Miku…
>>59380 I like this. Are you the same artist as the last two images? this latest piece has some weirdcore vibes and reminds me of liminal space images.
>>59382 I am and liminal spaces were definitely in my mind when making it, I am glad you get something from it lol. Conveying anything with such limited skills and understanding of the medium is difficult.
>>59383 you may not have the same skills as other artists but your ideas you express have meaning so it makes the art valid beyond the technical skills used to express it. will wait for next one
Painted one of the two today. Tried dry brushing again with black, didnt work as I hoped. Cleaned the excess but when i applied the varnish the black spread again, wich i couldnt see back then due to poor lighting - its much clearer in digital form. I did try to paint hands on him but the poor form made it look horrible so I coated it with grey again. Was hoping I could give the cloth some structure/color with red and blue so it wouldnt be just boring grey - used on of them flat pen nibs in hopes of getting a some even lines. A finer one would've maybe gotten me a better result.
Another papermasche thing. Too bad I cant do perspective and colours or else this might have turned out good. The digital picture doesnt do this "3D" any honours but it did turn out how I hoped it would, so that atleast is something.
And the last of my papermaschees I did was the >Black Door. Man my phone camera really ignores alot of the hues. Not that the actual thing is much better in reality, but a lot of the darker red hues around the middle of the whole thing are just ignored to this big red blob (I tried so hard there ;_;).
>>59408 for the 2nd structure I made a final layer of common kitchen tissue, figuring the white wall paint would stick better and have an easier time painting after everything is dry. This was A LITTLE bit true, but after it dried the whole thing just bended. While both things didnt turn out how I hoped, I did not regret spending the 2-3 days on them. I even have a slightly elated state of feeling if I look at them (Is this Joy? Does it get stronger if I actually produce something good?)
>>59409 Today I tried this here little tutorial of doing a pathway (might have helped with the first structure) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksALsh6cLzk&t=936s What a disaster! Made 2 attempts and tried to do it exactly as the vid showed me. Followed it including those 4 brushes and the same paint (except for the black were I used Umbra - wich he said I could, since black is such a fucking strong color to mix). Not sure why exactly, but I had ZERO control of the paint while mixing. I applied no pressure by taking the colours but as my palletes show, the brush always also left some paint on the "main drops", resulting in a huge loss of paint and disgusting colours. Frustrating as hell, wanted to do a free painting after that tutorial but after the ~2 hours I had enough for a day. I wonder if I actually learned anything from this…
>>59470 >Primitive look at that, it looks how it should look like. Sure you can do more details and the like, but the core is solid and nothing to be ashamed of. On the contrary, depending on what your bar is for criticism I'd say its good! Movement is correct, it looks like a grill, it even has this artsy feel to it. is this >>59372 also you?
>>59474 Great job. The same thing goes to you: it "looks correct". Speaking of tablets: to the scholars who have one: what kind of tablet are you using? The ones with a screen or the simple ones were you only have this pad and a stylus to draw and can only see what you did on a seperate screen?
>>59480 I've never looked at drawabox.com but sounds good, I draw tons of boxes. For gesture drawing: https://line-of-action.com/learn-to-draw https://quickposes.com/en/gestures/timed I stopped using them when I started gesture drawing people in real life. I might start gesture drawing my own pictures in a slideshow. z-lib.org and libgen.rs are good sites. Moatdd has good videos on drawing.
Regarding books, I'd rec Hogarth's books on hands and his book on heads, Winslow's book on anatomy, and Bridgman's books.
ACHTUNG! Had this little idea before going to bed. Regardless of how it turned out, it was really fun doing it.
I tried using less water today since the last few times it was all runy and some ugly drops went across half the picture. Today I had trouble doing details over painted areas. While I didnt pay attention to the others and I dont think I tried like I did here, did the less thinned paint lead to it? Is this why paint should be thinned, so you can overpaint it with other colours?
I was thinking I was going to try to get so good at straight-through animation that I would have no need for keyframes, but now I see that doing so I simply create the keyframes in my mind before I get to them, so I may as well draw keyframes.
my other stuff I did this week. The first one is what I kinda was going for with my papermaschee construct. Also a bunch of clouds I tried following this nice ladys jewtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpoZQMdacJY They came out worse than I expected so there is that. Cant wait to make my first passable picture.
My wet pallete also arrived! Can you imagine, I went to art stores in 2 different citys and they all had only dry pallettes! Maybe because they were more the general arts/creative hobby store who had more then just paint but still. This one I aquired over (((amazon))), its from one of those minature companys - Army painter or something. (((Amazon))) had others to offer but they were all imports and they would've costed me double than this one. Its pretty good, paint stayed fresh for several hours (instead of those 20 minutes).
>>59498 you mean the paper things with the metal things with bent legs in the joints? No real opinion. When I was a kid I cut out paper figures I colored and played with them, no need for joints. I stopped that the first time I got modelling clay.
I'm mostly interested in animation to simply get better at normal drawing, creating 2d illusions of 3d things. Going to try animating anatomy soon, have full 3d understanding of it. But right now I'm just gonna animate boxes or something while I watch simpsons as in >>59489
I will soon get a better computer but here is me using winxp version paint of which I downloaded for win7 as they are pretty much the same thing but classic mode is much preferred by me. If I ever switch to Linux I'm getting that win9x theme on it somehow the way lainchan users do. >tries winxp version >no crop?
Nevermind. I used both win7 and winxp for this. I wish krita worked though.
Also I wish an asshole had not mistaken my graphics tablet pen for a dead marker. Using a touchpad on my cheap business laptop from 2009sish is a pain.
Drawing figures is a lot of work. Cubes so easy and comfortable. Training to be able to keep the center of mass from wobbling while doing straight through. Think I'll write down my ideas about training drawing skills and write a book eventually.
>>59522 >Oh I just expected the cube in the screenshot to be animated. Don't feel bad. I tried to screenshot a spider that landed on my screen a while back
wageslaving again since a week so I am happy that I did a few in my off time. Tried clouds again. Then I made the Guardian from a Boardgame, couldnt just get the colours - again. Atleast it kinda looks like it should look like (if I dont wear glasses and am sufficiently far away!). Then felt bold this week and made something brash - resulting in something that belongs in the trash. Ran out of white in the middle of a painting, go figure.
Cant help but wonder if I am actually practicing or just wasting paint.
>>59592 How? Mh, I guess it was something 4 weekish ago? Just before my holiday I noticed I had quite a bit of cardboard lying around. When I was spicing a meal I also noticed I dont actually have a spice rack so I figured, why not be productive for a change and make myself a spicerack out of said cardboard. This escalated into having it covered and painted, for that I needed papermaschee. As a side thought I figuried I can make some 3D pictures with it and maybe a figurine? When I was done I had paint left and figured why not keep at it? Havent done any art in the past 20 years (has it really been so long since I finished school? Yes. I have been wageslaving at this job for nearly a decade now…)
Have kept myself very busy with gamedev so there hasnt been much time for art. I think its nearing the point I have everything working as I want thankfully.
>>59660 i see this style so often but it didnt seem fun when i tried it. it is too clean and boring to block big sections. i always liked smudging and scribbling and dotting color into areas. it is hard to clean it up though…
Wageslaving, 12 hours of my day just dedicated to commute and slaving. The usual numbness and parlyze is taking half of what little free time I have, so I am happy that I still made some pictures. Tried people this week instead of clouds. Also attached: Picture #2 and Picture #20. I need a brush that is smaller then 1 (or I need to draw bigger. THOSE EYES)
>>59664 yes planes are among the building blocks of painting. form/value/perspective and understanding how light works is like 90% of painting. color and composition come after
Is there an easy way to draw feet’s and hands or if just practice? I can do the exercises I found in the books of Hogarth or Loomis, but when I try to draw them in a position that is not in the books, most of the time I fail and when y try to draw something just from my mind I forgot them. Yesterday I try to draw my own art without reference, I tried all the afternoon. Most of the times I don’t know what in trying to do and the other times I forgot how to draw something. The last try was the least bad attempt. Maybe I should break my bad habit of trying to do things without sketching it first. This is normal in every person who tries to draw?
Wonder wich setting on my phone does this, pictures all seem brighter than they look like through that photo screen. Cant even see the difference between the sky and the clouds in pic #24. I also reached a milestone: 25 pictures in total and 1 month of time invested with 1-3 hours per picture. A genius would paint somewhat good now. Someone gifted passable and someone talented would definetely show improvements… Getting to old and tired searching for my talents. Atleast its somewhat enjoyable, should be fun once I reach the ok stage.
Tried out L-Theanine combined with caffeine last night. (1 dr pepper and 200mg of l-theanine)
Makes me serene and allows me to focus on things. Very big difference. I highly recommend it. Enjoying it again right now. I did this excercise last night while using it (among other things I accomplished with my focus, e.g. writing script to change my tablet's mappings easily, modded Crusader Kings 2 a bit). Will post after I practice drawing for an hour right now. I'm studying hands right now.
tried 2 older ones again to test wheter I improved a little or not. Had one of those days on wednesday, was only able to do the sketch. Spent 3 hours on it where only 1 was me actually doing anything. I guess I fucked up less with 29. Also the fuck is wrong with my cellphone camera? Was I just shaking while I took them today? Eh, not that they look any better.
another week another dump. Had 2 days were I wasnt on top of my time management. #32 was half finished while #34 was merely penceling (is there a difference visible between 34 and 33 where I only used grey?). #35 took me so long, >1 hour the sketch and >3 the painting - my speed remains abysmal. Couldnt quite translate the pose between the ref (bottom right corner) and the meme. Output of the happy hormone is also diminishing - 31 was the only one that released some.
I wanted to learn how to draw for a very long time, but for whatever reason could never get into it. Tried again this week and something finally clicked for me. So enjoy some terrible beginner shitscribbles.
Any drawing guide recommendations would be much appreciated.
if i knew how to draw, if i had the tools and time, id draw things like this. i like tall, thin succubi. long and narrow necks, legs, arms and fingers. curvy shoulders. fluffy, curvy, > waist length hair. breasts, petite or very large (<= B, => E). always seem to draw eyes like these. i like modest clothes like simple dresses without much cleavage. and i really like illustrious from al, shigure from kc, and an-94 from gfl. i think thats the sort of thing id draw. i dont know if anyone would like it, but its how id do it. i like drawing and if i decided this is what ill do id put a lot of effort into it, and go so far as reading kleine rassenkunde for anatomic reference, and draw from my favorite artists, who arent few, but i feel more drawn to programming and math, the possibilities are much more infinite.
>>59928 the eyes are about the only thing i can draw as i imagine them with a crappy mouse and ms paint. i like music too. but ill pick programming and never look back. so i wanted to try drawing anything quickly because i know ill never do it again, as much as i like it. same for music. pick only one thing, and become the best at it.
more warmups +some coom picture, 30 minute paintings in the morning is actually really good to set you up for the painting mindset later in the day after a long sleep. I wish i was better at drawing coom but i can't draw appealing porn
Have any other newbie drawers found that less time spent on a drawing makes it better? I feel like when I just let my imagination flow and not think too much about it things end up coming out better, it's like learning that there is no logic in drawing, it's just free flowing
Lots of "Tips for Artists" say one should join a circle/group where you can post your stuff, get feedback and be encouraged to grow and stuff. Sounds like normalfagcentral, but is anyone in one? Are they really better than doing this alone? Also is anyone doing NFTs? Apparently really low quality shit is being bought and sold.
>>60022 Positive reinforcement is never a bad thing. Exposing yourself to other artists who you can relate to in personality and skill level can help to encourage you. I find it's easier to draw and stay motivated when I'm drawing for someone or a group of people who I like, such as wizards. Knowing they'll get a kick out of a doodle keeps me focused on it.
The "circle" these guides speak of doesn't have to be something official, regulated, or even organized. If you draw a character you like and post it to a media sharing social network like Deviantart or Twitter with the appropriate tags, people who search for that character/series/whatever will find it and be happy to share it. Then you look through their art and respond to the things you like of theirs. A mutual exchange of "good job" goes a long way. >Are they really better than doing this alone? You have to ask yourself this. If you find that you would appreciate some kind words about your art, and would like to make like-minded artists happy with kind words of your own, then yea exposing yourself to a group of fellow nice artists will help. If you resent people with every fiber of your being and don't want anyone seeing or being involved in your artistic adventures, then just avoid social networks all together and never upload.
finishing 1 each day becomes increasingly difficult as I use more and more time for each one - ineffectivley that is. I spent +2 hours on the pencil part of #50 and I am pretty sure I could've done it in <1 if I didnt do double the work and a bit smarter. The painting itself took me ~4-5 hours. Surely there is a lot of potential to do those faster.
ANYWAY. I usually spent anywhere between 1-3 hours on the pictures between each 5. To make the equation easier, lets say I spent a minimum of 2 hours on this. 50x2 and this nets us with a MINIMUM of 100 hours. Milestone reached I guess. Looking forward to picture #100 - ofcourse its gonna be my only figurine again ehehe
wasnt really good of a week practice wise, but the sky of #54 turned out pretty good. Decided to draw one of my 3 YuGiOh cards I bothered to keep, spent something like 5-7 hours on it. Neutral colours are such a nightmare to mix and match. Can you spot the 3 letters I oversaw and had to add them last minute?
Only managed 3 pictures this week where I have given up on the 3rd one. #56 looks like some elementary kid could've done a better job. While #57 has its fault - especially the lighting - I am really glad how that one turned out. I really like my tree. There are more nuances to it in reality than what you can see on the picture made with my smartphone so you have to trust me on that. I think I'm gonna seal it so I can keep it for the coming years. Nothing needs to be said for #58: I thought I challenge myself, challenged myself, failed and given up halfway through.
>>60231 Thanks for the feedback and praise, but unfortunately I am sketching beforehand. You can best notice it by Hiitas Staff or the fox's head.
Hey Wizfriends, this is the first thing I've drawn in over 3 or 4 years probably. I just got a graphical tablet in the black friday sale as I want to learn how to draw better. Any tips on what I'm doing wrong and how to improve would be great! I've been looking at tutorials online about the basics but it dosent seem to click in my head for some reason, could this be an autism related issue or is it like this for everyone until it does click. I only want to draw for fun and not as a profession, but part of the fun of learning skills for me is being able to impress myself with finishing something, like say a keyboard sheet music of a composition I like as thats also something I do, so do you think I could actually improve my drawing skills by continuing to draw somewhat bad pictures like this? I dont post often at all so if my post is low quality or hard to read I'm sorry.
>>60304 I find that a lot of the time the difference between bad and good art is just shading, without shading things just look like flat shapes on a paper. I've only attempted to shade one drawing ever and I was surprised at how much of a difference it made
>>60309 I'm not that good at drawing, but early in my life I read about how Leonardo Da Vinci made a study of anatomy in order to draw realistic animals. My autism makes me fascinated by how bodies are hooked up in terms of how muscles are connected, veins, arteries, nerve bundles, so I keyed in to that.
And even something as simple as like dragon ball Z art really just simplifies how the human body is put together with just some lines that angle over and flow in to each other. So once you learn the major muscles then you can let your autism drool all over medical anatomical drawings or weight lifting depictions, and then it starts to get easier to depict really complicated things like a shoulder or a hand or a forearm with just the main suggestions of where the muscles go and how it fits together. Or at least that's what worked for me with my shitting fucking around for fun and thinking bodies look cool.
Guess what, I too purchased a tablet, or a pen display as the box says. Krita 4.4.8 works in win7 - is what i'd like to say but I have no idea how to use it. All I did was using a pencil, airbrush, the eraser and this line stabilisation thingie. Atleast they work. I wonder if its simply the new tool and my inexperience with digital that made my pictures look like this, but I am doubting it.
This week also just amounted to 3 paintings. The last one has to dry because I am planing on some finishing touches so you'll see them tomorrow. #61 might the best thing I'll ever create
>>60304 hivemind. Also good drawing of your samurai. Like >>60308 said, shading would improve yours since you kinda have the basics down. Your Samurai looks like a Samurai should look like - thats huge!
>>60315 >>60308 Thanks for the feedback! I tried to draw a face on this one, as well as shading it too. This may sound stupid but I think the thickness of the lines matters a lot with certain parts, like the chin area for example, this was my first time shading anything really but I think it came out OK. What do you guys think, maybe its a bit heavy handed in places and mostly just makes her look filthy instead of darkened in shade? Also any tips on drawing faces? She looks kinda evil or scowling when I actually wanted her to have a softer more youthful face.
>>60315 I like your anime drawing, I can't remember the name of the character but I used to see art of her all the time when I played osu! and I instantly recognised her when I saw your post so nice work!
I tried a sunset with 59 and wasnt really pleased with the result. It looks worse in reality. With 60 I tried to apply composition or whatever that is called. I looked at the sample and tried to find what the picture tried to express. I found myself drawn to the light up pathway. So I tried to simplyfy the surroundings while highlighting the end of the path. The left looks more like some hill instead of that grassy huge bush. Still soooo much to learn… especially if you look at my 2 digital drawings. ANYWAY. I promised you #61 and so I deliver. If you look at the early parts of this thread you'll find my portrait painting of that reaction immage "general delight.png". One day before going to sleep it simply made click: the next step of delight would be absoulute delight. The connection was easy to make - general delight, and under absolute its easy to immagine an absoulute monarch. So I present you his royal excellency ABSOLUTE DELIGHT! This years valentines day I bought some discount chocoloate, it was in this silver/gold wrapper. I kept 2 pieces figuring "why not". 3/4 year later I finally found a use for them! I peaked. Its just downhill from here.
>>60320 >I think the thickness of the lines matters reading that reminded me of a vid I saw about painting. It handled soft and hard edges and what effect they have on a picture. While its for acrylic painting, the same principle applied to oil. Perhaps this can be translated to digital as well? Here the jewtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d37ecv1FgyE >I like your anime drawing Then there is something objectivley wrong with your brain
Back when I thought I didn't have any talent, somebody told me to draw the back of your hand. I mean, who knows the back of your hand better than you do? But I was in to dragons and shit so I drew claws instead because that was what fixated my imagination.
I started out just tracing my hand and then filling in where all the tendons and veins go. Veins are weird because they grow like roots rather than according to an anatomical plan. So I guess that's a good way to riff on what things could look like.
>>60308 I think you might be spot on with the shading thing, the difference between these is huge!
>>60326 I tried to use thinner lines this time and I think it turned out much better. The soft and hard edges also seem really important as the drawing looked vastly different before I put the hard lines in around the darker areas, so thanks! You're right about the grass looking like a hill, maybe its because it looks like a solid colour and not very translucent? Absolute Delight is amazing btw I expecially like the way its framed and how everything looks like it belongs together! Seeing you use those chocolate wrappers for texture reminded me of something I saw on a painting restoration programme where in historical oil paintings they would use a heavy amount of paint to give the painting actual 3d properties so thicker parts of the painting would cast shadows over itself, so maybe you could use that technique (or not) to gain further insight if you used oils? >>60315 I found out her name(obviously)and it inspired me to draw her too.
I think my drawing today came out really well actually, but I am getting a little saddened by the fact all I can do is copy other peoples work and not really draw from my own imagination. If any Wizzies know how to improve my imagination in this context it would be SUPER appriciated, although I have been suffering from brain fog for a while now so I'm not sure im even capable. Ultimatley I'd like to be able to draw like pic-rel just from my own imagination but that might just be a pipe dream.
>>60331 I've been wanting to draw characters in strange situations/poses that I never see but I suck at anatomy. I think pictures like that one are on the easy end of drawing because it is just a still character 3/4 view in a cartoony style
>>60331 >but I am getting a little saddened by the fact all I can do is copy other peoples work and not really draw from my own imagination >If any Wizzies know how to improve my imagination in this context Almost every tutorial I saw underlined the importance of references. Pic rel is what I used for his excellency and #35 should be obvious. People said once we "build a visual library, drawing from imagination becomes easier. But references should still be the way to go for a very long time". I believe this might be closer to half a decade or longer. But this isnt school or any contest with thight rules - CHEAT CHEAT CHEAT. Just like your cirno, find something close of what you're imagining and apply her to that.
>>60336 u may not have the same skills as other artists but your ideas you express have meaning so it makes the art valid beyond the technical skills used to express it, i love it great job wizz
>>60337 that was just a bit of a dumb oekaki, i found the expression amusing. i always liked the panels in manga or hentai or even anime where they make funny faces like that, stuff like onizuka. give me a prompt and i'll make something else if you dont mind
>>60331 > I am getting a little saddened by the fact all I can do is copy other peoples work and not really draw from my own imagination. If any Wizzies know how to improve my imagination in this context it would be SUPER appriciated Practice is really the main factor, I've found. It's very important to do a mix of referenced drawings and drawings with no reference to go off, to avoid becoming reliant on having a reference. But it all comes down to doing it a lot, and always trying to get better. There aren't really any substitutes for mileage.
>>60332 I have no idea whats easy or not since I just started. Do you think learning anatomy is something I should be looking into as a beginner? Or is there something more useful right now for me like shapes or perspective?
>>60334 >>60360 Thanks for the tips friends, I guess after a while of drawing from references you start to just remember what things look like? I know that sounds very stupid but I don't know how to phrase it better, maybe like how you learn new words but its images/geometry insead?
>>60315 >>60334 By the way, how is getting familiar with the tablet coming along?
>>60367 >I guess after a while of drawing from references you start to just remember what things look like? Yeah, pretty much. But like I said, it needs to be reinforced by frequently trying to get it right without the ref. >Do you think learning anatomy is something I should be looking into as a beginner? Or is there something more useful right now for me like shapes or perspective? The thing that helped me most was perspective, because it applies to everything you draw. Anatomy is subject dependent: learning a human's anatomy isn't going to help you much with drawing cats or cars, but perspective applies the same to a cat as to a human as to a car.
My recommendation is to just draw what you want for now. When you're starting to feel frustrated by your lack of knowledge, that's when you bust out the proko videos (a very solid resource, just try to ignore the humor). If you have a bit of skill in the manual side of drawing first that's when anatomical knowledge will actually help. A lot of people try to learn anatomy when they can't even draw a nice line or control their values, which makes it hard to tell when they get it right because it looks bad either way. People often say that eastern artists tend to learn art faster, but I think what's more accurate is to say that eastern artists just draw a lot more. They'll doodle a lot as a kid, go into serious art education with a solid amount of drawing experience and thus can apply the knowledge they gain from education far faster than somebody who just picked up drawing. A lot of skill in art is the physical application of lines or value, and learning through trial and error what looks good and what looks bad. This is conjecture, but I'd say a lot of solid artists didn't really study anatomy or perspective consciously, they just drew a lot of stuff (often copying somebody who DID study) until eventually their drawings started looking "correct", even if they weren't really accurate to life.
One of those weeks again… Only managed 1 painting. This was with 3 sessions over 2-4 hours long. Overall productive time of maybe 3 hours max, so an efficiency of likely 30%… and with a result of this… atleast the water is passable.
>>60369 >When you're starting to feel frustrated Isnt frustrated the default emotion of us?
>>60367 not good as you can see on D4. That pendisplay and my main screen look different so imagine my shock when i compared pictures on both screens. I tried some settings but I cant get them to match, likely that my mainscreen is atleast 5 years older that this tablet, different manufacturers and that my GPU only has 1 DVI-E port so my pendisplay is connected through HDMI of my MotherB. This can be most clearly spotted on D4s skin: on the display it looks "flesh" tinty while on my main its closer to white… One setback after the other, the universe must be setting me up to something grand, right? RIGHT????…….
>>60369 Thanks for the guidance friend, I'll made sure to keep it in mind.
>>60386 I would'nt say that your painting is bad wiz, I very much like the right half with the good gradient on the water and the blending of the yellow to the purple. Your Miku looks good on my display, maybe you could tweak the setting of your monitor for a (janky) solution? Other than that, you seem to have more consistent lines and a good use of colour so I would say you've improved decently!
I actually tried to draw from my own imagination this time, it's a DnD 5e group I used to be part of a long time ago. I know it's in a simple art style and probably quite childish but I like it.
This week I managed two paintings, while #63 took me the longest. It was also completely without reference. Its too bad that my hand slipped with that purple, the smol wizard I put there is barely visible. Not to mention the vomit forest on the left. Atleast the grass in the front is kinda ok. Also what kind of self respecting wizard doesnt have a swiming pool?. #64 was simple enough, wanted to do a nocturne. I'm happy how the grass and shrubs on the ground turned out. With my digital #5 i tried something I've been trying since the beginning as seen in these posts: >>59408 >>59503 >>59793 Left it half finished since I can already tell the usual things I do with paint in the nightmare plane dont translate 1:1 in digital with the basic simple_brush. I guess I can try some of those effect thingies Krita comes with preloaded though I am not sure if that will help me in the long run. With that I mean actually getting gud at this shit.
I present you with my 65 CHRISTMAS DELIGHT I apologize for nothing. Likely the one that took me the longest to paint - and still this is the result…. Anyhow, after I finished it I thought I could give it a nightlike feel by glazing the finished painting with some dark blue and yellow. While it doesnt look like an urban evening ambiente there IS some lighting variation and thats something! Should've had a "We support the Black Community" sign on the store that doesnt accept ebts ehehehe
>>60457 >>60477 You succeeded and thats the best/most important part.
>>60390 I haven't drawn since I did these 2 and it shows. I'm finding myself constantly drawing something then having to resize it with the transform tool which I'm unsure on how to go about correcting.
>>60521 A journal could help with personal progress though. Basically a way to review thoughts, ideas, and lessons learned and see progress not just in the drawings themselves but also in the thought/learning process.
Really dissapointing, almost 200 hours in and all I am able to is this teenager level. Anyhow #67 or digital 7 is not really sfw. I did my pictures in both digital and physical, of course physical is slighty better given the gap of 60ish works. Also I did frame and hang his majesty
>>60581 i dont know what to say other than you need to basically sketch everything out before painting. it should be proportional and virtually identical to whatever your painting. you use a scale divider to do this. you then just mix up color and literally hold it up in front of you and match it to something, then you apply that color on the canvas. it isnt technically difficult to achieve realism in painting by doing this, it just takes a very long time
>>60586 you should look for artists that paint in the exact style you want to paint. they have already solved the problem of how to create paintings, there's no reason you must start from zero and fumble around on your own. you should spend time getting second hand experience watching those artists paint
>>60587 feel like i should be transparent and just say ive never actually painted anything, all ive done is just watch other people paint. but i ordered some supplies so i will try and paint something when it arrives and post it for fun
>>60619 If you're new, please don't go in using all the fancy mechanical and optical tools that painters of old used to reproduce people and places to near perfection. Try to draw with your imagination and mind's ability above all, strengthening your natural capabilities to see and recreate shapes, colors, and texture. If you start off just using special tools, you'll forever be dependent on them.
>>60622 >your imagination and mind's ability i can't do any of that. don't bother suggesting i have to train it. my mind is empty and there is nothing to see. the type of painting i wana to do benefits greatly from accurate sketching and guidelines and contours and things to help put the color down correctly. it doesn't require any imagination whatsoever
>>60624 >my mind is empty and there is nothing to see are you sure? Are there really no stupid random thoughts that you see, that you'd like to express?
>>60629 you think i wouldn't know if i could see shit or imagine things in my head? i actually have a hard time believing your brains are capable of any of that
>>60581 If you're serious about wanting to get anywhere near good and not just fucking around with paint for shits and giggles, I'm going to have to be honest with you. You're bad and you should stop working with colors until you're solid in grey scale. Stop painting until you're half decent at drawing. As a beginner you have none of the skills you need to tackle color and painting, and no experience and capacity to understand the issues involved. You have to start learning the basics, otherwise you will be stuck struggling with problems that exceed your current comprehension. You have to simplify the challenges you're facing and start training in a classic manner from the beginning, or you will remain confused and directionless forever. Get a lot of cheap paper, basic pencils, kneaded erasers, sanguine sticks. Get one of these cheap fiberboard drawing boards with a clip. A3 is a good paper format for beginners, not too big not too small. Torrent Glenn Vilppu's instructional videos, learn from them (thepiratebay.org/description.php?id=7409774). Do it concurrently with drawabox.com exercises. Don't just blindly follow the instructions, you have to study and understand this stuff. Make a training schedule and follow it. Don't get stuck on singular exercises when you feel you can't get a "good enough" result out of them. Complete the tasks you have scheduled for yourself whether you're satisfied with the results you're getting or not. Unfortunately drawing is an arduous and thankless skill to train, improvement can only be gained through repetition. Most of the resulting drawings will inevitably be disappointing and there's no way around it. The skills can't simply be improved by focusing 200% of effort on making single pictures and then spending forever trying to correct them. Finish the practice you start, note what needs improvement, and be ready to do it again tomorrow, as many times as it takes. This is not a complete or universal "get good" plan, it's only a bare bones starting advice. When you earn some basic skill and knowledge you will start noticing these guides aren't covering everything you want to learn. There is an abundance of learning materials available and once you have an idea of what's what in the art training world you will be able to find more on your own and tailor your studying plans to your own needs. Until then you have to go back to the basics and train the classic way.
>>60581 Copy simple drawings with few lines (stuff like manga or chibis) and focus on training your observational skill. What the wizard above me said is very good advice, but the observational part moreso (as one group of beginners on another forum is starting to realize). Once you're proficient in replicating what you see in two dimensions, you will transfer this skill to life drawing. This also trains very essential stuff like pen dexterity and control over proportions.
So I tried this shiny tree in a dark forrest I saw. My first attempt didnt turn out as I wanted it to, there was simply to much in the background. 70 was definetely an improvement. With 71 I tried to use komplementary colours to make the center tree shine even more but there I used to much stuff again and it simply looks busy overall. Less focus on the side trees would've been the right choice I believe.
>>60670 >>60671 Thanks for the advice. I realized it myself that simply doing pictures and some of my practices simply werent enough. Its just too bad I really work bad with these instructual materials, but there is obviously no way around it. There is nothing to say about the lady with the smileycrotch but what about the red man? I thought the physical one turned out okay atleast?
It's my first drawing ever in 27 years. My brother works as a tattoo artist and I want to work with him in 2 years. I want to focus on drawing and improve my lines. So,
What kind of a strategy would you suggest? Is tracing the lines of some drawings a good idea? Thanks in advance.
>>60762 Tracing might work for getting a sense of how a skilled artist's lines flow but it doesn't really build up your hand-eye coordination.
Pic related are some exercises for line and pen control.
I hear tattoo artists need to be incredibly good at transferring the designs into ink accurately, so you should get started on some kind of course with an academic drawing approach in order to get you observational skills up to par. Bargue is usually the go-to here.
>>60767 Tracing is good. Studying the old masters line by line is really good, or other artists you want to emulate. After you are good at perspective or constructing 3d shapes, copying da Vinci is really helpful. I recommend going to a library where they have high res books of da Vinci's sketches.
>>60677 Dont listen to >>60682, your art is gorgeous. When I first started watching this thread I must admit I did'nt like your drawings, but as I saw them more when I came to check the thread I began to appreciate the consistency and small details you put in. Keep posting Wiz, I enjoy your work.
>>60798 How about you post some art then big guy and we can all poke criticisms at you. Or did you come to the art thread just to shit it up and contribute less than nothing?
>>60797 >>60792 you know she's kinda growing to me. If you're using one of those programms, look if it has linecorrection or somethin like that. That does a huge deal for smooth linework, even if one would use a mouse.
>>60511 Still not practicing and I'm pretty sure I'm actively getting worse. On a side note, do you guys think its un-wizardly to draw w*men? If so, where is the line drawn, waifus only? None at all? I know it doesn't matter but its just something I thought of during this session.
>>60819 I draw anime succubi all the time I don't think it's unwizardly in fact it's very wizardly. Good practice for how to draw human bodies and learning perspective
>>60823 I'm >>60819, do you think you could draw Misato sitting on the bonnet of the Alpine 310 (her car) from the TV series? I tried to do that originally but had lots of trouble with the perspective and proportions so I gave up. Maybe you could give it a go?
>>60824 I've never really drawn cars or anything rigidly structured like that, but it could be a fun challenge. I'd prefer something easier first for a start though.
>>60819 Feeling pretty good about this one Wizzies, there are a few parts that are bad of course (construction lines for joints still partially visible and his right hand is a bit scuffed) but still passable right? >>60308 I think you're proven right again about the shading. >>60806 Looking good, the colour blending is excellent on this one!
I have a cheap wacom screenless tablet but don't like drawing on it. I want to get either a drawing tablet with a display or an ipad. I have no idea what to look for. Is there any updated buying guide around? There's a general on /ic/ but the op looks like a meme and all the posts in the thread are people asking what to buy. I don't know if the ipad is better or worse than a drawing tablet but the resell value is really good in case I end up not using it (and I know they have good reputation for drawing).
>>60861 I >>60854 use the Wacom One and although I'm not very good, I do enjoy using it as its light and very smooth (also quite reasonably priced at £50). I would be careful when looking for tablets with a display since they might have different properties than your monitor, see >>60386. I have no idea on iPads as I've never owned a tablet like that. Also, how come you don't like the screen-less tablet you already have? Could it be the disconnect between your eyes and hands that's the problem, as I've seen many people online say the same things but I might just be looking in the wrong places.
I'm also really unimaginative if anyone wants to give me simple requests.
>>60697 >I thought the physical one turned out okay atleast? Anything is okay as long as you end up learning something in the process. You should try to adopt a learning first mindset. It's more important to learn stuff than just make pictures that look nice.
>>60775 No, the first and third images are from Peter Han's "Dynamic Bible". The second one (freehanding straight lines) is from Scott Robertson's "How To Draw".
>>60878 >I can’t draw a straight line thats untrue but it will remain this why unless you make a minimum effort for straight lines. Its actually really easy to avoid this scratchy thing - sure they wont be perfect but it will look alot better with almost no effort
>>60890 I understand youre trying to help this guy out but maybe give him some actual advice other than "Its actually really easy" >>60878 Getting nice lines can be hard, I try to use the point to point method where I set up the start an end of the line and try to connect them together. see >>60767
>>60878 Drawing straight lines is a different issue, and absolutely not necessary for avoiding chicken scratch. The issue here is just being really inefficient with the lines you're using, too many lines going nowhere and doing nothing but confusing the forms. You don't need practiced line control to avoid chicken scratch, you just need to use longer more confident strokes. Here's the kicker: you're actually already doing it in that drawing. See those lines you're using for the upper arm sleeves? Do that for the rest of the drawing. You want to aim more for lines like that, and avoid the kind of lines you've got on the collar.
Pic related is an example of messy sketches that aren't chicken-scratchy. The lines all serve a purpose, either to help find the form, define the form or apply value (shadows). When something can be achieved with one single confident line, it is. The lines don't need to clean or straight, but they should be confident and readable.
>>60894 >>60895 well I did a drawing trying not to scratch anyway, the sleeve on that image I modeled after myself standing in a mirror so maybe that's why I felt more confident
anyone know some good video tutorials? I am struggling with text only. Drawabox's combi with text, video and asignments wich are shown are pretty good. Are there similar ones? Looking for both digital and acrylic.
>>60923 as its clearly evident in this thread I'm not qualified, but your nishiki isnt something I'd call bad or worse. Certainly its rough but if we were in school you'd clearly get a C at minimum.
>>60864 >Also, how come you don't like the screen-less tablet you already have? Could it be the disconnect between your eyes and hands that's the problem, as I've seen many people online say the same things but I might just be looking in the wrong places. maybe it's the disconnection, the size of the tablet (small intuos) or lack of practice, i can't draw lines the way i want them to be i also just solved an issue where close strokes would connect with each other the problem was the pen double click distance wacom setting >I'm also really unimaginative if anyone wants to give me simple requests. draw chickens
>>60938 >subsist off this if you're already of wizard age? Well as far as I know only a handfull people make it as artist. However there is money in porn, especially if you're willing to cater to THOSE people. Atleast thats what i hear. I wonder if that "niche" has been saturated
How do you quantify improvement in drawing? This one turned out alright, but I'm still just copying. Are there milestones in drawing like there are in music (Grades 1-8+)? How do I actually create something somewhat-original (if thats even possible)? I learn music from a teacher and its so much easier to tell if you're improving (faster notation reading, muscle memory of tricky phrases, ect), is this because I have a teacher to guide me towards these observations or what? Do you reckon it would be beneficial to join an in-person drawing class or something similar?
>>60986 Improvement is something you measure over years, not by each individual drawing. At least I've never had a "wow I'm so good now", I just go back to my drawings from years ago and see they were fully of dumb mistakes that aren't present in my more recent drawings. And I don't doubt that my recent drawings are full of dumb mistakes I'll notice when I'm looking back at them in 5 years time.
>>61057 Stop talking out of your ass. If you want to learn to fit into a very refined and established style like manga then you have to learn how it works by copying.
This one looks fine, but its almost like its two drawings stuck together in the middle. I'm not sure how I did this, but I tried using the selection and transform tools to made it more seamless but couldn't get any better than this. Maybe its just my imagination from looking at it for so long, or because the lines are too hard without shading? What do you guys think?
>>60970 How goes it with you friend, Getting any better results with the tablet yet?
>>61048 I really like your ability Wiz, your drawing skills are what I aspire to be like. Do you have any tips regarding brush selection? The brush you use seems to not overlap and darken like the ones I've been using. I use the latest version of Krita if that matters (I don't know what program you use so no worries if you cant help)
>>61068 >Do you have any tips regarding brush selection? If you're not happy with the brushes you've got then don't hesitate to try new ones. Just don't spend all your time searching for the perfect brush, because it probably doesn't exist. Just take brushes you find nice to draw with and tweak the settings to your liking. Of course, first you've got to figure out what settings are to your liking, which just comes with experience and experimentation. >The brush you use seems to not overlap and darken like the ones I've been using. I use the latest version of Krita if that matters (I don't know what program you use so no worries if you cant help) I use CSP. The black is a custom brush I nabbed when it was free, it's meant to emulate inking with a wood pencil. I dunno if it does a good job of that or not but I do find it fun to use, so I tweaked its settings to work in monochrome and now I use it as my primary inking brush. I'm just as comfortable with a default g-pen. The sketching brush I use is just the default Real Pencil that I've set to be fully opaque and bumped the pressure up (so the "floor" of the pressure variation is higher, meaning there are no super thin tails). It does still get darker when overlapping itself, but that's because it's a texture that's overlapping. I don't use krita but chances are if your lines get darker when you draw over them it's because the brush isn't fully opaque.
>>61070 Thanks for the tips, its much appreciated! I tried a couple of drawings with the default pencil and changed settings a little (flow and opacity off), but run into some different problems like shading and using construction lines. Usually I draw the image first with a default thicker pen, then turn the layer opacity down and trace over it with a finer pen tip (pic 2 rel) but this doesn't seem to work as well using pencil tips, so I might be doing something wrong.
On a side note I keep drawing using very little of the canvas, or drawing what I would consider to be proportional for the brush size only to have the image be either too big or too small (usually too small). I know I haven't explained that well but I don't know how to since I lack knowledge and experience.
>>61103 Are you trolling? You realize that anime characters are stylized representations of people, right? Also, you can't get good at drawing anime characters without studying anatomy.
>>61104 >Are you trolling? He asked a yes/no question and I responded with a yes or no, then reminded him of the sentiment shared by most users here and reflected in the rules and subtitle of our main board which I did so to explain the reasoning behind my answer. I don't understand how you can consider that to be trolling. >You realize that anime characters are stylized representations of people, right? He said he was using references, which leads me to believe that his drawings aren't stylized at all. This comes off more of a "Anime isn't wizardly because it's 3DPD" thing than you defending him looking at 3DPD. >Also, you can't get good at drawing anime characters without studying anatomy. Not true in the slightest! So much of anime, good anime even, is drawn with a complete disregard for basic rules of anatomy. Look at the stick figure characters of Ojamajo Doremi, the moeblobs in Binchou-Tan, or the great varieties of character styles in anime such as Kirby of the Stars. There are many artists who distort the human form in their own unique way to the point where knowing anatomy will contribute to reproducing those styles only marginally.
And no, one does not need to study the intricacies of, and certainly not REFERENCE real people to get good at drawing humans, especially when drawing in a simplified animatable style. One who walks the world with an attentive eye already has an understanding of human form stored within his psyche (it's instinct even!). By attempting to bring these deep-rooted understandings of the human body to the conscious artistic brain through trial and error - by drawing with imagination alone until he sees his inner vision reflected well in his art - does one get better at drawing humans. I dare to say that to study from art itself is even more applicable than studying from real 3DPD, as that will teach you nuances and caveats of many styles, the technical production aspects, and the kino of composition and framing from the perspective of static art.
>>61105 Drawings are fine, but the reference photos of 3DPD have been deleted before and they will be deleted again!
>>61106 Okay you crab retard. Post your awesome sketches that you learned to draw without ever looking at a reference, I'll wait. You don't know every muscle and bone in the human body and how they look in different poses by "instinct" you fucking buffoon. No one can. It's fine if you just want to draw childish cartoon characters, but most anime and manga characters will be close to realism in their anatomy, and to draw the simplified forms competently you need to know how they actually work first. Your religion of being averse to everything "3D" isn't a part of wizchan, it's your own business and you should keep it that way.
>>61107 Why are you saying such rude things? I'm not going to reply to those parts. >You don't know every muscle and bone in the human body and how they look in different poses by "instinct" I mentioned before that the importance of viewing the world attentively. Not directly studying static images or videos and trying to remember what parts of the body look like as if one was trying to remember the lyrics to a song. Rather just the act of passively appreciating the shapes and textures of things in reality. I meant to emphasize the importance of viewing reality in terms of simple shapes, and paying special attention to things you see that you may wish to draw in the future. I didn't want to drag in to the realm of unwarranted advice though, but I'm glad you gave me a chance to explain. The instinct I refer to is one that's been altered by an artistic mindset. After studying from life and art for so long, you'll come to develop a subconscious understanding of how things ought to look when translated to 2D. An instinct to recognize patterns, shapes, and particularities of objects is present in every man who walks around with his eyes open. To become an artist is to figure out how to simplify these visual properties, deducing them to a set of simpler rules. It's through drawing from imagination alone that you can pull from your mental catalogue of what things look like to you and learn to reproduce that knowledge to paper. If you begun drawing something right now that you see regularly in real life, but never "studied" in the way that you propose anatomy should be studied, you may be surprised to find that you can draw it quite well. If something about it looks off, you can lay down some light lines and random shapes and eventually you'll see something that your human instinct of scrutinizing and recognizing aspects of everyday things in your life recognizes as correct, putting you back on the path to reproduce it through drawing. It's such a great feeling to be puzzled by why a sketch looks off, and then after thinking and doodling on it, suddenly coming to realize why it doesn't click as the real deal. Like figuring out a riddle or puzzle.
I encourage all artists new and old: If you wish to draw something which you've never drawn before, then just try to draw it. Don't look up pictures of it or guides on how to piece it together from blocks, just jump in. If you've seen enough of it in your lifetime, you'll eventually get it right by erasing and redrawing individual pieces that look "out of place". If you haven't seen it much, then do your best anyway and then when it's time to look at images of it, you then compare how the reality differed from your understanding of the object. This will help you to remember what it looks like for future reference. A man never forgets times he was critiqued, even by himself, so if you can critique yourself by comparing what you did with what you should have done, you will never forget what you learned. >Post your awesome sketches that you learned to draw without ever looking at a reference Are you the same man who's been saying something along these lines every time someone's work is critiqued in any way? I would sure hope so. My only post in this thread so far has been >>61074 , and it may be my last if even trying to give advice on how to improve warrants such an angry response. The waters of the draw thread have changed and I'm glad there are other similar threads on Wizchan free from such hate. It's not a great sketch by any stretch, but I referenced nothing for the style, anatomy, or framing. because of this I am proud of my work as something entirely of my own. I did refer to an official settai sheet to know what this succubus's outfit and hair looked like, as I had not seen this anime in a long time, and I really needed her to look as she does because this character was requested by another wiz. It took me about an hour of work to get to that point. If I were to ballpark I'd say I have about 500 hours of drawing, mostly anime and scenery. >Your religion of being averse to everything "3D" isn't a part of wizchan The contrary is evidenced in the very rules page and FAQ, but this is a conversation for /meta/. >it's your own business and you should keep it that way. He asked about it though.
>>61106 >Not true in the slightest! So much of anime, good anime even, is drawn with a complete disregard for basic rules of anatomy. This… is a completely, horribly mislead view. I'd even dare to say factually incorrect. Even super deformed or hyperstylized cartooning (referring to all forms of simplified illustration/animation) is based on the real human form, or at least based on something that is based on the human form. If you're studying anime then you're just studying people who studied people who studied from life. Layers removed, yes, but even something like Doremi is based on the same knowledge as Akira. It's foolish to willingly ignore this for the sake of ostracizing wizards who seek knowledge and power, even if it involves studying the unwizardly.
>>61108 >but I referenced nothing for the style, anatomy, or framing I can see that because it's shit. Her arms are too small and short and the legs are completely fucked. Please drop your retarded ego and pseud Dunning-Kruger theorizing and study anatomy. You're not special and you're not less of an artist if you use references. You can draw from imagination but that's only viable after perfecting the forms and proportions and drilling them into your mind. That's how everyone who ever got good at it did it. Saying it's "unwizardly" to look at real succubi to learn to draw is the worst teenage larp truwiz shit I've ever seen, so just fuck off with that please. I'd bet money that you're an actual teenager from the way you type and go on about your little theories.
>>61117 Calm down. There's no need to get violent. >Suggest through many posts that drawing is something any man can do, and the best way to get started is to just start drawing and finding out what he can do already, and then to learn from there by studying passively from reality and other artists he enjoys. >Angrily get cursed out and called a teenager, a troll, a larper, a psuedo-intellectual, a crab, a retard, a buffoon, childish, and a religionist Oh golly what nerve did I strike by suggesting that men on the "disregard 3DPD" board not spend time looking at naked 3DPD and violating rule 7. You're beginning to come off as very insecure in your drawing ability. If it bothers you so much that me and other men here can draw to our own satisfaction images which weren't traced from 3D pig disgusting, then perhaps this isn't the board for you. >I can see that because it's shit. "Well go ahead, post your masterful works that you drew from referencing 3DPD, we can wait". (See how easy it is to drop that line in response to any criticism or suggestion?) I eagerly await what you have to say next.
>>61119 >to our own satisfaction If you don't care about being actually good and only want to draw for fun, like some normalfag that never gets good at anything, then that's fine, but don't poison the minds of others. Just winging it and trying to dress it up with some ridiculous claim that people can naturally draw isn't enough to become competent, it's just arrogance. Pride cometh before the fall. >spend time looking at naked 3DPD and violating rule 7 Nude photos meant for study aren't the same thing as posting sexy succubi to jerk off to.
>>61121 >If you don't care about being actually good and only want to draw for fun, like some normalfag that never gets good at anything Doing something for fun makes you a normalfag? Not being good at something makes you a normalfag? Hmm…
>>61121 >If you don't care about being actually good and only want to draw for fun, like some normalfag And there it is. We could only assume your beliefs were of the angered, insecure normortal variety from your tone alone, but you've just spelled it out for us in plain English. You believe that a wizard doing things for himself, entertain his own ideas through strictly creative expression, disregarding 3DPD in the process - is normalfaggish. This implies that you believe the true goal to drawing is to impress others, and if you're not drawing only for other random people and their attention, then there's no point in drawing at all. You opinion is revealed and everything you suggested thus far has been disregarded. You are truly an outsider and I thank you for so bluntly admitting to such, and for giving us the opportunity to explain why you and your type are so wrong. >but don't poison the minds of others Again I'll iterate: So far I've suggested that any man can draw. Those who have payed more attention to the world with their eyes will be able to draw more from memory. I noted the importance of drawing from memory and imagination before anything, so the man can see where his current skill level is, and from there focus on what he needs to improve on. If explaining to wizards here that 'Yes, you CAN draw, don't let anyone tell you otherwise, please start!' is poison to you, then you truly are a mundane normalfag who wishes ill upon us all. If you belive you can't draw, that's fine and I'm sory my advice went through you, but don't suggest other men can't because YOU can't. It comes of as very insecure. You didn't fall for the aphantasia meme… Did you? >Pride cometh before the fall. A wizard should be proud of anything he creates with his own hands and mind. Even normalfag males should. Am I not allowed to be proud of my own creation because I made it without tracing someone else's work? Are you proud of yours? And if not, then why not? >Nude photos meant for study aren't the same thing as posting sexy succubi to jerk off to. I notice you didn't make any /meta/ thread on this so I'll entertain you here. If nude photos can be posted because they were used as a reference, then any porn could be dropped so long as the poster claims it was the target of his copyings. Would you want half of the drawing thread to be filled out with landwhales and succubi? There's a post in his thread (which I'm now certain you haven't actually read through). >>59664 shows that the image on the left has 3DPD, but it has been spoilered. I was the one to report it. Only the mods can spoiler individual images of a post so this alone gives insight to the policy of posting reference photos. You couldn't even be wise to suggest would-be porn poster spoiler their 3DPD, which too speaks volumes of your understanding of Wizchan's functions and positions on the matter.

>>61117 it's just some metaburger autist who adopted wizchan rules as part of his identity so even a drawing of a naked human being it's bad because it's "3dpd". ignore the retard
>>61126 Now I'm also a metaburger autist? Splendid. >wizchan rules as part of his identity When on a site, discussing that site's rules isn't indicative of an obsession. >drawing of a naked human being it's bad because it's "3dpd" If it escapes you that some men can get by with their lives while disregarding 3D in every aspect of it, then you have much to learn about Wizardss
>>61127 > discussing site's rules isn't indicative of an obsession. you're doing it on the drawing thread because it butthurts you that a wizard uses references, in this case real people, when drawing. You're the most pathetic person on this site saying that it's bad because it's 3dpd when it's common practice in art school for figure drawing. Who the fuck are you to tell others what to draw or not, or what to use as reference? >If it escapes you that some men can get by with their lives while disregarding 3D in every aspect of it That has nothing to do with my post, and that's your butthurt because one wizard uses nude models for drawing. Grow the fuck up.
>>61124 Picking up a difficult thing like drawing as a hobby just for a lark, with no intention of ever mastering it, is what normalfags do. You should aim for mastery for the sake of the art itself, but there also isn't anything wrong with wanting to impress others. It's only natural and useful to use that as fuel to motivate yourself. >Am I not allowed to be proud of my own creation because I made it The problem isn't with being proud of your work, but with being too proud of your perceived innate ability to try and actually learn. You're crippling yourself with misplaced pride. You don't respect the art form and only care about spraying your ego jizz to your mediocre talent.
When it comes to a hands-on activity like drawing, it is generally a good idea to be skeptical of advice from people who write long treatises about such-and-such, yet fail to produce outstanding work upon request. The true test of their methods and theoretical knowledge lies in their work.
To all who are interested in drawing anime/manga: the best Japanese artists, like most excellent artists, have all carefully studied from life at some point, and done so on a consistent basis. Very few exceptions here. I've looked up the backgrounds of some of my favorites.
>>61106 >And no, one does not need to study the intricacies of, and certainly not REFERENCE real people to get good at drawing humans, especially when drawing in a simplified animatable style Complete and utter bullshit. Full-on bullshit. I suggest you read an interview from an animator, or look up the curricula of animation schools, or just browse the Twitter feeds of artists who post their studies, or open a how-to-draw anime book (the Japanese ones, which I seriously doubt you've ever bothered opening), or open an animation textbook, etc…
>>61128 >>61130 >>61132 Rules for me but not for thee? Not sure which one of you is the guy, but to him: Why have you not posted your work yet? You asked me to submit mine to validate my claims, and I linked to it. Why have you not done the same? Go on, post your work to prove that drawing figures from a direct reference will produce something good. What do you have to be afraid of? This is the drawing thread dafter all, so draw!
>>61134 >prove that drawing figures from a direct reference will produce something good You were arguing that drawing from reference is just forbidden according to your truwizardly code, but now you're going to argue that it doesn't even work, and it's better to look at a copy or draw from memory? You realize that those are just lower resolution and less reliable references, right? Shouldn't you be drawing pure abstraction instead of cute succubi if you hate references and 3D so much? >You asked me to submit mine to validate my claims, and I linked to it You have invalidated your fanciful claims with your drawing which had glaring mistakes, and that's enough. If you want validation for the standard method, look at any artist that draws humans well. You're the one arguing against common sense by advocating learning how to draw by referencing a memory of the real thing, or a copy of a copy, like a fucking retard, instead of just looking at the real thing, and only because you think it makes you the wizardest wizard of all. What a joke.
I can see that you have talent by looking at your drawing, so stop wasting it, humble yourself a little and learn to do it properly, using every tool at your disposal instead of crippling yourself for idiotic reasons. No one cares about how epically wizardly and against 3D you are, as long as you meet the requirements.
Anyhow, another busy week with little to no free time. My little sisters birthday is coming up - she is 16 years younger than me, imagine that - so I got her a few things she asked for. I also wanted to give her a painting and since we watched that fucking sponge - and still watch the first movie like yearly together - I figured she'll get something from me that belongs in the trash. I made one >>59591 like 4 months ago so I'd like to think I atleast dont make all the same mistakes. I belive the middle one turned out the best.
>>61068 >Getting any better results with the tablet yet? I atleast like to think so. There is a difference between a digital pen and a pencil even if its a small one. Still cant make a picture look identical on both of my screens so thats an anoyance.
does anyone have suggestions on how to draw chibi type bodies in action poses? I tried to do it but all I could get is kinda lanky, the big head and small body seems impossible to put much detail into, I kept drawing the arms over and over again but couldnt make anything that looked proportional
>>61267 study Yoh Yoshinari's (the animator) sketches of Tezuka characters. In that collection of sketches he draws old-fashioned Osamu Tezuka characters like Astro Boy (usually three or four heads tall) in lots of action poses
>>61295 Amazing Miku wiz! I may be biased but this is my favourite panting you've done so far. The detail and values you've used I think are top notch; great work! How come you gave up on the digital one? it looks like it was going well so far, if its the shading that was putting you off try using 100% opacity brushes and drawing the outline of the shade then filling it in. That's what I've been doing and I think its working so far, I also use separate layers for the shading/colouring and combine them when finished if that helps at all.
>>61297 >>61312 well thanks for the praise but as I said: its just a copy from this. All details are credit for the one who made it, I just copied it. As for the digital: mostly since I was in a bad mood and I wanted to match the colours here - wich I evidentely couldnt. >combine them when finished mh I do use layers but is there more to it? Elaborate further if its more than just "create layer and have it visible or disable it if unneeded".
>>61318 would you care to recreate them and show your progress?
>>61367 I don’t know if this is supposed to look like a Charlie Chaplin marionette, but that’s what it looks like to me and it looks really cool stylistically. It would fit in on an indie album cover.
>>61295 A bit rude of me to ask but, would you do me a painting of Asuka Soryuu in the style like 79 Miku (second pic rel) so I can use it as my phone wallpaper? No worries if you don't want to / can't.
Block in the big shapes and colours first, try to simplify, imply the shapes, use brush as a tool for shaping instead of only applying paint, do more then one layer, highlights last all check….. I dont plan to go for realisim but the end result should look good… Looks like my camera couldnt cath the the bits of dark shadowy green on the right side.
>>61377 few colours, not so many details, little highlights - i guess it wont be impossible but >so I can use it as my phone wallpaper? there is the issue of quality since I can only photograph my pictures.
Sup, it's the guy that just got out of San Quentin and thumbs upped the veemon pic. check out my galleryI did these all while in prison withouth references or stencils… Also i was wrongfully convicted and hope to appeal the manslaughter charge someday when I get Judges on my side Https://imgur.com/a/C3TmcJm
>>61380 >there is the issue of quality since I can only photograph my pictures. Judging from your Miku I don't think it would be a problem as its very clear and well lit, as well as far higher resolution than my aged phones screen. As long as its a flat-ish photo I think it would be perfect!
I wish i knew how to draw or paint but I cannot properly mentally visualize things. I just have a basic mental concept of something and it's too poor to be pictured.
I really need to manage time better. Only 30% of the used time was actually doing something… Anyhow >>61373 >>61386 as requested, a simple copy - take your pick. I was selective about those outlines. I COULD make all of them but do keep in mind that my hands are not steady.
>>61407 Use references. Unless you are trying to be a cartoonist, damn near every other visual artists uses references for stuff they haven't drawn a thousand times before.
