As there are just too many manga, it is a huge pain to dig into this pile to find good ones to read. So why don't we share each other great manga, and good mangaka.
I'd recommend Fumetsu no Anata e (To You, the Immortal), pic related.
Story of some sort of immortal being of the shape of a sphere, has the ability to imitate object and being in his surrounding. It bit by bit, start to experience the world, pain, hardship, death, not having any idea of anything of who it is, and slowly develop of conscience. It's set in a fantasy world, where the clothing and customs are loosely inspired by early Japan, and maybe the Ainu.
Beautiful and detailed artstyle, incidentally the author of this manga is Ooima Yoshitoki which can explain why it reminds me of Koe no Katachi (same author after all).

I like downloading raw manga that is untranslated and no one knows about, at least in the English community, and reading it.
I think it's fun to read something no one has read before, even though of course that's not really the case, it still feels like it.
I only read stuff that's already completed with all raws uploaded. There is a surprising amount of stuff out there that matches this criteria.

Read Kimetsu no Yaiba, guys, it's not a deconstruction, but everything people actually like about Shōnen manga. The art is kind of wonky, but cute, pleasant to look at and it doesn't trigger flashes of real life PTSD, like some overly realistically drawn manga.
I don't understand how you guys can read ongoing manga. Too much stress about forgetting things for me, no thanks.

I used to read "I am a Hero" and liked it quite a bit. Then took a break to wait for it to conclude. Now I have finished it and FUCKING HELL the finale felt like the author just got fed up with the whole thing and decided to quick-draw a half-assed conclusion. These were ones of the most underwhelming and nonsensical final chapters I've ever seen. Very-very-VERY disappointed.

It is pretty decent up till volume 21. But then everything is dropped: all the build-up, all the mystery, all unaswered question - everything is flushed down the toilet. What used to be a wild biopunkish transhumanist mindfuck ended in something resembling the beginning of the "I am a Legend" movie. I would like to spoil it but there is nothing to spoil at all - after quite a dumb showdown the protagonist is just left alone in Tokyo and survives there for a year hunting and scavenging. That's it. The end. No explanations, no point, no sense. If I actually bought this manga I would've felt scammed.

Finished blame! today. One of the darkest mangas I have read, it's like a bleak cyberpunk psychedelic fever dream.

Do you like gekiga? I just finished Munou no Hito or A Worthless Person. It's about a deadbeat breeder who keeps fucking himself over with stupid business decision and his equally deadbeat friends. It's very pessimistic and wistful but don't expect anything too deep. It's a nice read and is only 6 chapters.

Read Miman renai recently. 29 year old IT worker ends up kind of dating a middle schooler. Art was average, tomoe was the typical archetype the young succubus in these kind of mangas. Only enjoyed some of the embarrassing situations he got himself.

I'm trying to get back into manga since I'm starting to run out of top quality anime to watch. I'll post few finished ones I've read recently because I saw them mentioned around and my thoughts on them.
Kuro(somato) [first pic] kind of interesting concept creepy goings on but at the same time it's a sort of slice of life. Unfortunately it ultimately fails to really give the concepts much polish and much of the characters feel kind of set piece. To be fair it's not overly long (only about 200 pages) but still it's a bit disappointing. 6/10
Ashizuri Suizokukan [second pic] very nice in both terms of art and feel. The feeling it evokes is of a well realized magical realism, feels very 'literary' in a way. Would recommend this one.
Sabishisugite Lesbian Fuzoku Ni Ikimashita Report [third pic], this one is basically failed normalgroid/late bloomer the manga: succubus edition. I still found it interesting enough to complete, and there were at least some relatable moments.

I binge read all of Kodomo No Jikan.
Not bad. I watched the anime when it came out. I remember someone on here described anime as just a "commercial for the manga" and that couldn't be more true in this case. The anime is a trace of the first three or so volumes with a tacked on ending at a point where in the manga, it just continues normally, but that's anime for you. The only thing I remember from the anime that wasn't in the Manga were the scenes where Reiji had locked Rin up in her room.
The art wasn't spectacular; there were no vistas or explorable environments present. It was strictly about the characters. It's kind of an upgrade from what I'm used to really. I read for the story, not the pretty pictures, so when an author focuses more time in to polishing dialogue and tying things together it has more of an impact on my memory than a nicely drawn scene. I can't really vouch or the dialogue though because I read a translated release. From what I got though, there were quite a lot of clever puns and other underhanded quips that worked.
The thing I really liked though is that it's not totally completely 100% lolibait. As the three literal succubi grow, they cool down and start viewing relationships as a more serious issue. The teachers themselves also don't remain oblivious and ignorant for the whole series, which I expected they would for comedy reasons. It gets pretty depressing at times at hit me on a personal, non-incel level. It didn't just flat out end either, the ending was in sight for 3 volumes and everything tied up at the end of volume 13.
The ending pages genuinely surprised me though and had me all giddy. I really didn't expect such a turn out. If you don't plan on reading it: Rin and Aoki commit to a relationship, starting with painful loli sex in a sex hotel, Usa hooks up with Reiji, Kuro is Kuro

I watch the anime in spring this year. I expected it to be a pedobait show but in fact it was a coming of age show. I recognised myself in Shirai and I am surprised how deep it actually was at times.

I enjoy doing the same thing, but instead of only reading completed series, I download each new thing that is uploaded that looks appealing to me, and whatever else I run into being recommended that seems of interest. My standards have degraded over time and I've read a lot of real shit, but it's a good way to practice my Japanese and pass the time when I can't make myself care about anything else, I figure. I've downloaded around 500 titles by this point, and of course I've only got around to actually reading a fraction of those, and finishing or at least reading the bulk of a small handful.
I've idly thought of starting a Wizchan raw manga reading circle or something, to be able to discuss what we've found, but I don't know if I would actually commit to it.

Finished reading Welcome to NHK manga. Not sure what am I supposed to be thinking about it: the story seems rather scrambled, the plot progression is rather unsteady - with a lot of regressions out of nowhere, with the narrative randomly speeding up and slowing down.
What were supposed to be emotional scenes didn't really click with me and often times they didn't carry any sort of weight to the overall story. Maybe except for the revolutionary garden scene closer to the end of the manga - it was rather cute, and was preceding what is basically a denouement. Speaking of the epilogue - it caught me off-guard, I mean, it came rather suddenly, ended rapidly, and is quite undeveloped.
Ending, at least for me, seems like an unfitting puzzle piece. Before that, Satou always reverted to his previous condition when things were getting better for him, and Misaki just went along with it, trying to cure him or something - fuck if I know, more on that later. In the Ending, all the main cast parted their ways - Satou got himself a part-time job and is now working, not trying to run away from this like he did before, Yamazaki moved to his parents' house although he didn't want to, and Misaki… locked her up in the attic of the apartment where Satou used to live (?). It's all rushed, somewhat ungrounded, it is probably the part of the manga I have most gripes with.
Then there's Misaki and her relationship with Satou. I'm not quite sure what the fuck is going on between these two. Misaki has an implied metal illness (or something) that's why she was bullied in her school, forcing her to drop out and go around volunteering to help people with her recovery program. She's somewhat manipulative, and is trying to feed her ego by helping someone who's worse off than her. Apparently, the plan she had for Satou, she was afraid to take it any further after he proposed to her (?), and that was the reason why she cloistered herself in the attic of his house. Everything about her is just really strange, and I'm not sure if I got everything correctly, really. Her character doesn't get any apparent development, and the motivations still remain unclear, and are open to interpretations, and I'm not sure if it's beneficial to the story or not, since some may get the notion that the writer was just too lazy to create a stark personality for his character, going with the mystery factor instead. I guess it just boils down to the reader and his preferences.
Overall, It's okay, I guess. It doesn't have any particular mind-blowing insights into hikkikomori lifestyle or the human nature, "emotional" scenes are quite weak, characters just flounder in the same small pond of problems, sometimes getting out of it, just to return to it five pages later, repeating same process throughout the whole manga up until the ending.
Art is nice, nothing extraordinary though. Manga is quite short, you can complete it in one sitting.
I'm pretty sure I'll have to read the Light Novel to clear things up, but I'm not sure. Has anybody read both the Light Novel and the Manga? Can anybody tell me if there are differences?

Maybe except for the revolutionary garden scene closer to the end of the manga - it was rather cute, and was preceding what is basically a denouement. Speaking of the epilogue - it caught me off-guard, I mean, it came rather suddenly, ended rapidly, and is quite undeveloped.
Ending, at least for me, seems like an unfitting puzzle piece. Before that, Satou always reverted to his previous condition when things were getting better for him, and Misaki just went along with it, trying to cure him or something - fuck if I know, more on that later. In the Ending, all the main cast parted their ways - Satou got himself a part-time job and is now working, not trying to run away from this like he did before, Yamazaki moved to his parents' house although he didn't want to, and Misaki… locked her up in the attic of the apartment where Satou used to live (?). It's all rushed, somewhat ungrounded, it is probably the part of the manga I have most gripes with.
Then there's Misaki and her relationship with Satou. I'm not quite sure what the fuck is going on between these two. Misaki has an implied metal illness (or something) that's why she was bullied in her school, forcing her to drop out and go around volunteering to help people with her recovery program. She's somewhat manipulative, and is trying to feed her ego by helping someone who's worse off than her. Apparently, the plan she had for Satou, she was afraid to take it any further after he proposed to her (?), and that was the reason why she cloistered herself in the attic of his house. Everything about her is just really strange, and I'm not sure if I got everything correctly, really. Her character doesn't get any apparent development, and the motivations still remain unclear, and are open to interpretations, and I'm not sure if it's beneficial to the story or not, since some may get the notion that the writer was just too lazy to create a stark personality for his character, going with the mystery factor instead. I guess it just boils down to the reader and his preferences.
Overall, It's okay, I guess. It doesn't have any particular mind-blowing insights into hikkikomori lifestyle or the human nature, "emotional" scenes are quite weak, characters just flounder in the same small pond of problems, sometimes getting out of it, just to return to it five pages later, repeating same process throughout the whole manga up until the ending.
Art is nice, nothing extraordinary though. Manga is quite short, you can complete it in one sitting.
I'm pretty sure I'll have to read the Light Novel to clear things up, but I'm not sure. Has anybody read both the Light Novel and the Manga? Can anybody tell me if there are differences?

Based Kumeta is at it again, but this time instead of constantly lampooning whatever he finds fit and inserting social commentary, he decided to go with a somewhat mild setting that makes it somewhat reminiscent of his earlier, pre-Zetsubou Sensei works, except the degree of craziness of his gags' has been lowered substantially.
The premise is: a single "dirty" gag manga artist and a caring father is bitterly trying to hide his (as he supposes - shameful) occupation from his ten year old daughter while keeping up with his mangaka duties.
Although Kakushigoto isn't as bitter as some of his previous recent works, the carping is still there, and Kumeta's aim has shifted from the social/political sphere to the manga industry. There are plenty of insights into mangakas' workflow and problems that come up along the way. The manga probably serves as an autobiography of sorts, as there are plenty of small details and scenes that directly parallel with Kumeta's own life.
Characters in this one are nothing really special, much like in all of Kumeta's works - they all possess a set of their own quirks and traits that sooner or later come up in the gags. The designs are likable and way more varied than what you'd expect from Kumeta. There's also some SZS-like subplot going on, that is, there already is a set of females who got the wrong impression that the main character was hitting on them and fell for him. Am I the only one that dropped To Your Immortality ? I feel like it's going nowhere, I'm tired of the same pattern of meeting a new character which dies and it's only reminder is it's fizical form.

Wanitokagegisu. Its a seinen manga by Furuya Minoru about this 32yr old guy who lives by himself and works as a security guard. Normally he's generally content with his life but then weird shit starts happening to him for no reason. The art is actually pretty unique and its not the typical moeshit stuff.

It was pretty short but the artstyle was interesting and it had a lot of funny black humor, the story is a bit all over the place but it was enjoyable. Only real issue was the last couple chapters felt rushed.

The story really didn't change in narrative pacing even at the end. Something weird happens and you meet this character, something weird happens and you find out about that character, the only thing the ending did was return to the characters that felt like they had the most focus and do the same thing with them. That's why it's such a great manga, and why everyone still talks about it in rec threads. It's not supposed to be a satisfying story, in fact I think the whole point of Voynich Hotel is that even if you reveal mysteries the truth isn't that much better than the anticipation of what is to come.

Full-colored manga is rare because it takes way longer and it's close to impossible to release on a weekly basis (and most serial manga is released weekly).
Never had trouble with black-and-white because manga style comics incorporate lots of effects that make it easy to distinguish action. If you're new to the medium, you'll get used to it.

I started reading HxH out of boredom. I'm now at the point where they all got their hunter licenses. Really mundane, characters are one not, and a lot of contrivances so far.

I just finished reading spirit circle. It was really good. I would prefer it to be a little longer though to show the spirits of their freinds daily lives instead of just seeing the two main characters different spirits through the times, but it was still very satisfying to read and the ending was good. It want to learn more about the time gods too though, but it makes sense to leave them as a mystery.

Well, I finished the Auction/Phantom Troupe arc and I don't think I'll bother going on with it. Guess my expectations got inflated with all the groids who I heard praising it as something above shounen, but it was run of the mill to me. Characters defined by one personality trait and their motivation, villains so out of the maincast's league the only way for them to compete is to bullshit their power up, fights where characters explain how their abilities work, worldbuilding that has no rhyme or reason outside of the mangaka going "Hey this would be cool!", etc. The next arc seems they'll be going into a video game and I already had enough of shit like that so I'm done.

I'm reading Doraemon. Finished vol.7 yesterday. I finally realized that's the type of stuff I look forward to it. I find comfort, almost bliss when reading something like Carl Barks's Scrooge McDuck or The Smurfs. Doraemon has the same feeling to it. Something intended for kids and deep into it you find an old man having fun with his thoughts. Bouncing around silly ideas in a world where they actually work. The artwork is simple but enjoyable.
Read Black Paradox and after reading that and Hellstar Remina I'm convinced Ito works better when he isn't trying to write a longer story, haven't read Gyo or Uzumaki yet though. It seems to me he's better suited to shorter things because it's awfully apparent how bad he is a plotting and characterization when he tries to take on something more.
It's painful reading naruto and seeing how it got progressively worse and worse into it's piece of shit ending, it used to be so good but was ruined by shonen jump jew making it longer for gold. It's too painful because it was so good.
Romance manga has to be the worse genre, even netorare gives you a better feeling at least to your penis compared to the black hole thats left in you from romance when the other succubus isn't chosen. And then they show a time skip 10 years later and the other succubus that we read all about in the manga now suddenly has kids with some random man instead of the main character, and the main character is married with his wife and they have kids and get old and die a happy life. Endings like that piss me off more than anything.

I've been reading manga by Oh! great like air gear and tenjou tenge and this guy is a great artist, but he can't write stories worth anything. Everything feels unnatural, random parts of the story suddenly happen that don't flow well and aren't believable and its hard to understand whats going on a lot of the time because of that. He should just hire someone to write the stories for him while he focuses on the art, he would make great manga then. Somehow he's been making manga for more than 23 years even though he can't write good stories.

Both heavy character focus, don't have much of a continuing story but still manage to link together plot elements to give you a feeling of progression as you read further. I've been purchasing the licensed English prints of Kiniro Mosaic and Nichijou. I dropped both anime about 3 episodes in as they were being released because I was enjoying both on a relaxing level, so I figured reading the manga would extend the enjoyment. I was right, but dang does it take long for them to wind up on the shelves of bookstores where I live. I want to read some more recent series which caught my attention but none have been officially translated yet.

I'm really enjoying "Marry Grave" It has a weak start and the pacing of the story is unorthodox I don't believe the Mangaka has made full use of the stories layout seems to be more of a gimmick (heard some say it was to get people interested in the story)

Just finished reading all the currently available chapters of Black Clover. (182 at the time of posting) and watching the anime.
I gotta say it far exceeded my expectations.
In my opinion Black Clover puts boku no hero to shame. Both of them being your typical shonen that hit very similar beats I feel the comparison is fair. BC is not without its faults but when it comes to suspension of disbelief, humor, characters & setting I feel BC hits these points out of the park compared with boku no. My only real complaint about BC is how fast it feels like the plot moves but I suppose it's better than dragging on forever with story arcs(looking at you one piece)
If anyone here enjoys a good battle anime I would highly recommend Black Clover. I avoided it up until now because of the memes surrounding the launch of the anime.

The anime is actually really well done as well. Certain fights are just people throwing spells at each other but since it's a world of wizards I understand the reasoning behind it. Since the main character uses an anti-magic sword whenever he fights it totally throws all the normal rules out the window and its a real treat to watch(especially with the anime since the english dub is good)
Overall I would rate Black Clover in the category of shonen as a solid 8.5/10

I've been looking for these for at least a year now with no luck. It's the Goemon manga series, there's lots of them but I can't find a single volume. All I managed to find is a bunch of screenshots from selected panels and dead links, indicating, I hope, that there are scans of these somewhere.

X-men on the other hand is pretty much just an 80s soap opera that has less to do with mutants fighting each other and more to do with a school full of outcasts hooking up (spoiler alert, that's all boku no truly is). This kind of power scaling can't take place in boku no because literally every single person on the planet has these powers and much like in X-men the show is more focused on mutant power vs mutant power rather than realistic circumstances.
The third biggest issue I have with boku is the scope of the story or should I say, the lack of scope. For a show based around the real world or even "the comic book world" I simply find it rather distracting that the greatest superhero school is full of predominantly characters so bad they would even be rejected from the X-men. I understand that the show is mostly based on call backs or homages to comic book characters but having world changing superhero events pretty much all take place in one or two japanese locations while simultaneously only directly impacting a dozen characters at most simply feels incredibly underwhelming to me.
With all that hot mess to say please don't think I am shit talking My Hero for any other reason besides my personal inability to look past the shows faults at telling a compelling narrative by my own standards. The show simply does not hold a candle to actual comic books and if it wasn't for the anime aesthetic the show would have nothing going for it besides totally re-hashed ideas. I have still read/watched all of the content available for boku simply because I am a stunted child at heart who enjoys the familiarity and safety of the shonen archetypes. I would also like to take a moment to address a green text of yours.

Caught up with Neverland. I still like it even though some of the later arcs are nothing to note. But with recent twists, it seems like the mangaka is deviating from what they originally planned.

Now my mom went on a month long trip and I'm back home to take care of her pets and endure an internet so shitty I'm not even sure this post will go through it takes so damn long to load anything. Only thing I have on this laptop is 45 volumes of Doraemon and for the past 2 days that's all I do now. It's been a while since I'm at this point where I feel like stop reading/watching/playing some media but once I stop I immediately realize there's nothing else to do and just force myself to continue. I'm actually having lots of fun with it.

I just finished volume 6 of succubus's Last Tour and I went in not knowing it was the last. I really really liked this manga, From a normal viewpoint it wasn't anything special at all and the art was comical, but this particular series clicked with me personally in more ways than one. It ended on such a sad note. I hate this feeling of the adventure ending. I guess I can watch the anime now and prolong the experience for a little longer but my pansy ass is going to be butthurt over this for some time.

Speed-read through the one punch man volumes yesterday. It was pretty good for the first few volumes, but I felt like they dragged on too much in the later volumes. (maybe I shouldn't have read it all in one sitting, lol)
Saitama's gimmick got old pretty fast. Why show all the "exciting" battles between monsters and heroes if saitama can just walk in there and end it in one punch? I began reading Goodnight PunPun out of pure curiosity. I imagined it was going to be very childish and was surprised to learn how mature it actually was.
This manga is quirky, uses often times funny and beautiful imagery, and the characters are well developed. I would highly recommend it.
The only issue is, I found myself drop it at issue 2. 2 focuses more on the PunPuns uncle than it does PunPun, and his uncle develops this, like, weird relationship with a 16 year old succubus… but he's over 30. I found myself being very unattached.

Read Bitter Virgin because at first I thought it was a wizard's autobiography. Turned out to be a tear-jerking seinen by a female mangaka. Cried a few times, pretty good overall.

It's one of my favorites too, I have the original release. Blame! is what pushed Nihei to be a big name. His Knights of Sydonia got animated too.

Binge read like 30 isekai/fantasy mangas/manhwas in a month. Felt really addicted to that shit. Certain tropes started to stand out, like "obligatory succubus romantic partner", "end goal being either returning to earth or defeating the big bad", "empty platitudes served as highly intellectual philosophy" etc. Coincidentally, the only mangas I liked were the ones that either subverted the trope or completely ignored it.
Can recommend only like 5 manga out of the 30 I read, from most liked to less.
"The Gamer" - korean manhwa about a gamer getting OP powers. Art style is below average, but the amount of chapters it had was pretty nice for my binge(a whopping 285). Romance is nowhere in sight, at least from the main character's point of view. Had a lot of fun skipping boring gamer lingo and reading how he got out of tough spots. Superpower manhwas are already for pretty dumb people, but "The Gamer" takes the cake. You can completely turn off your brain and read it without any issues.
"Solo Levelling" - another korean manhwa about superpowers. Art is better than "The Gamer"'s, but the amount of chapters is pretty low, 89. No romance at all. Was pretty satisfying to read about a guy getting stronger in complete solitude.
"Overlord" - I watched the first season of the anime and then read the manga. Manga was infinitely better, didn't even bother to watch the second season of the anime. No romance because the main character is a dickless skelly. After all the boring human isekais, Overlord was a great change of pace. Main character is a good balance between an edgelord and a goofy comic relief.
"The Eminence in Shadow" - pretty funny manga about all the stupid tropes isekais have. Subverts some of them, embraces the others. Reads more like a comedy rather than an author's power fantasy, which is pretty unique for isekais.
"Kumo Desu Ga, Nani Ka?" - a nice manga about a spider getting stronger in complete solitude.
The other 25 mangas I read were either really shit, really boring, or, worst of all, really generic. Isekai mc's suffer the "cardboard cutout" syndrome, which is acceptable if character… nay, power progression is executed nicely.

My favorite manga artist passed away a week ago, they just released the news through his official twitter. Just a month ago he was posting some drawings and sketches and kept thanking people for having bought his works for all those years.I realize now he was saying good bye. I din't know I would be this sad over his death but yeah, I'm really bummed out about it, holy shit. I liked reading manga before finding his stuff years ago but Disappearance Diary was the first manga that made me realize this art form could be something really interesting. He's also one of the main reasons I learned Japanese, just so I could read his stuff. So yeah, I really liked this guy's work. Good night sweet prince.

I finished steel ball run recently. I really liked the premise of a old west race from coast to coast on horseback, not to mention the amazing characters and fights. I tried reading jojolion after this, but it's not the same thing. After i finish it I'm reading berserk, i never read it and only watched portions of the original anime.

I just finished reading that a couple weeks ago. In my case, I found it somewhat difficult to stick with, since it often made me quite depressed and I'd sometimes take a break for a week or two before reading any more. All the sex stuff, including Punpun's constant need for human affection, and all the associated antics he gets up to in regards to that, were a little tiring after a while, but I don't know. The pervading feeling of having to endure an entirely dreary life, filled with self-loathing, loneliness, and emptiness, really bummed me out and only served to intensify my own miserable disposition. Much of the character, in what they say & do, only serving to reinforce these points of misery even further. Next to Punpun's uncle, I found Nanjou in particular to be pretty potent for this sort of thing, especially when she's giving out her rather scathing reality checks to Punpun, or, by extension, just the reader themselves, since, at least for me, I found most of her remarks said against Punpun, and his general spinelessness, could just as easily apply to me as well. That whole scene where Punpun is getting dressed down by Nanjou's former fiancee was especially brutal and all I could feel was angry & upset while reading it, making me feel even worse since that's essentially what he was calling out Punpun for.
Other than that, I thought a lot of the characters were pretty likable, especially Seki & Shimizu. I also found the abrupt direction the story took near the end, (Punpun going on the run for murder with Aiko), to be actually kinda interesting and a novel change for the pacing, despite it being a little jarring as well. The sheer cluelessness of Punpun himself can be somewhat frustrating & contrived at times, but, even in that, I could feel a sense of recognition in him, given how much of a laughable nincompoop I am myself. I'll also say that when it comes to the ending. I felt quite bad for Aiko. Yeah, she was pretty crazy in her own way and was, in some sense, just the female version of Punpun, but it would have been nice to see her be happy & satisfied somewhere. Her eventual suicide, while easy to see coming, was still pretty sad. The fact that she suffered so much guilt over murdering her horrible & abusive mother, while then continuing to be needlessly abused by Punpun, only for her life to end in such a dismal way, really reflected how awful & tragic life so often is. Leading on from that, I found Punpun stabbing himself in the eye, in a bid to kill himself(?), to be pretty dumb. Who the fuck kills themselves by plunging a knife in their eye? Fucking Punpun, as retarded as ever. The whole scene kinda reminded me of the end of Fight Club though, what with Jack shooting himself in the mouth to get rid of Tyler, in just the same way Punpun does to get rid of "God". Nanjou randomly coming across him afterwards felt kinda contrived however. The chapter devoted to how Punpun is starting to forget Aiko was also very sad.
As another wizzie mentioned, one of the biggest gripes I had with this manga had to do with the cult sub-plot. It was dumb, lame and only got in the way of the main story instead of adding to it, becoming essentially nothing more than annoying filler dragging it down. The cult seems like it might be interesting at first, but it ultimately just fizzles out & goes completely nowhere. Maybe that was the point perhaps, as indicative of how life itself follows the same trajectory? Either way, I'd of much rather preferred it had that whole cult bullshit been cut out entirely.
Another, somewhat related thing, is how this mange touches on societal collapse, albeit briefly. As someone who somewhat frequents r/collapse, I thought it was a pretty cool & prescient inclusion for the author to slide into the events of an otherwise unrelated story. Just a randomly wild aside, but did anyone else find those two teachers playing hide n' go seek with each other in the first few chapters of the manga to be creepy as fuck? Just imagine finding one of them in your closet or under your bed, eyes wide open just standing there/laying there. Freaked me out even more than most horror related things ever do.
Anyway, all in all, I'd say I enjoyed it and I'm not ashamed to admit that it even managed to make me cry a couple times. It might sound entirely cringe & egotistical, but I sorta wish I could manage to write something like this, but modified to reflect my own life as an agoraphobic wizard, hermit living in North America. I suppose one might say, what could someone possibly write about such an existence? Maybe not a lot, but what could be written, would have enormous value, I think. I realize manga really isn't a "thing" outside of Japan, but I don't know. All I'm saying is that if it were somehow possible for me to do anything on this planet, writing a story similar to this would be exactly what I'd like to do. Knowing that I never will, and that no else probably ever will, just bums me out is all. It's just something I couldn't help, but be bothered over while reading this, or thinking back on it now. I'm a bit jealous of authors like this, and others, who can manage to write & express themselves, or to at least go headlong in the attempt, as opposed to someone like me who never does anything and can only dream about ever doing similar to the same degree.
I just finished reading that a couple weeks ago. In my case, I found it somewhat difficult to stick with, since it often made me quite depressed and I'd sometimes take a break for a week or two before reading any more. All the sex stuff, including Punpun's constant need for human affection, and all the associated antics he gets up to in regards to that, were a little tiring after a while, but I don't know. The pervading feeling of having to endure an entirely dreary life, filled with self-loathing, loneliness, and emptiness, really bummed me out and only served to intensify my own miserable disposition. Much of the character, in what they say & do, only serving to reinforce these points of misery even further. Next to Punpun's uncle, I found Nanjou in particular to be pretty potent for this sort of thing, especially when she's giving out her rather scathing reality checks to Punpun, or, by extension, just the reader themselves, since, at least for me, I found most of her remarks said against Punpun, and his general spinelessness, could just as easily apply to me as well. That whole scene where Punpun is getting dressed down by Nanjou's former fiancee was especially brutal and all I could feel was angry & upset while reading it, making me feel even worse since that's essentially what he was calling out Punpun for.
Other than that, I thought a lot of the characters were pretty likable, especially Seki & Shimizu. I also found the abrupt direction the story took near the end, (Punpun going on the run for murder with Aiko), to be actually kinda interesting and a novel change for the pacing, despite it being a little jarring as well. The sheer cluelessness of Punpun himself can be somewhat frustrating & contrived at times, but, even in that, I could feel a sense of recognition in him, given how much of a laughable nincompoop I am myself. I'll also say that when it comes to the ending. I felt quite bad for Aiko. Yeah, she was pretty crazy in her own way and was, in some sense, just the female version of Punpun, but it would have been nice to see her be happy & satisfied somewhere. Her eventual suicide, while easy to see coming, was still pretty sad. The fact that she suffered so much guilt over murdering her horrible & abusive mother, while then continuing to be needlessly abused by Punpun, only for her life to end in such a dismal way, really reflected how awful & tragic life so often is. Leading on from that, I found Punpun stabbing himself in the eye, in a bid to kill himself(?), to be pretty dumb. Who the fuck kills themselves by plunging a knife in their eye? Fucking Punpun, as retarded as ever. The whole scene kinda reminded me of the end of Fight Club though, what with Jack shooting himself in the mouth to get rid of Tyler, in just the same way Punpun does to get rid of "God". Nanjou randomly coming across him afterwards felt kinda contrived however. The chapter devoted to how Punpun is starting to forget Aiko was also very sad.
As another wizzie mentioned, one of the biggest gripes I had with this manga had to do with the cult sub-plot. It was dumb, lame and only got in the way of the main story instead of adding to it, becoming essentially nothing more than annoying filler dragging it down. The cult seems like it might be interesting at first, but it ultimately just fizzles out & goes completely nowhere. Maybe that was the point perhaps, as indicative of how life itself follows the same trajectory? Either way, I'd of much rather preferred it had that whole cult bullshit been cut out entirely.

Best isekai manga I've read in a while - isekai ojisan. It tells the story of a 35-year old wizard who came back from another world after being there for 17 years. All the humor is based off the fact that "uncle" loves sega religiously and disregards succubi, but that's enough for me. It's actually a breath of fresh air from the thousands of harem isekais.
The romance is non-existant and all advances of succubi are ignored or subverted. Main romance partner is my most hated archetype of all - tsundere. It's really amusing reading about all her failed attempts at wooing the MC. One of the main reasons why she can't seduce the MC is because uncle "isekai-d" before the tsundere archetype got popular, so he doesn't understand the appeal. It's used as a punchline in an earlier chapter, that's why this is spoilered

Finished PunPun. Overall, while I liked the art and the way the story is presented I really didn't like the story and characters. It's hard for me to describe but everyone talks like they just got out a philosophy 101 class, and while I generally don't have a problem with stories doing that, in PunPun a lot of the dialogue just comes off as shallow when you actually assess the vague shit the characters say. Though given the themes of the story itself it could easily be argued that's the point.

The only mangaka I like is Junji Ito. Is he the only mangaka writing consistently good shorts? I don't like commitment in manga, especially commitment to 1000 chapters of manga. I do wish Ito's stuff was a little longer though.

What a true disappointment. I was expecting another wizardly masterpiece like Kokou no Hito instead of liberal art degree indoctrination course about gender roles and transsexuals. Even ignoring that aspect, the story is painfully awful despite using the french revolution as a writing prompt, with shounen anime fights and character temporarily becoming retarded for plot convenience at all stages. The art however is just magnificent, its amazing how much effort and quality work is put into every frame no matter the size. It really is a shame the writing is THIS bad, because by god is the art just absolute perfection.

around 300 chapters into Kingdom and it is Very good but some of the magic is wearing off however I expect it to pick back up.
600 chapters and sadly ongoing but worth it for strong characters and some very fun/dramatic scenes.

Finished reading basically every work from Tsutomu Nihei. Guess I'll do a quick ranking/guide for them in order if anyone is interested.
Must read no matter what tier:
Blame!: It's his most famous title and while its certainly not a perfect work - if you like it, you will REALLY like it. The artwork and world design is simply well… out of this world. Just go and read it if you haven't, just don't expect well explained characters or story. The story is written in a very obscure and cryptic manner, while the characters are rather… mute much of the time.
Worth a read if you want more Nihei art and don't mind not having great plot tier:
Biomega: I think I honestly find this to look even better than Blame overall, which is rather astounding - to say the least. Unfortunately the story is far worse and its almost 80's action movie feeling at times. The artwork is just gorgeous though, the rule of cool + style over everything.
Noise: Its a sort of a tie-in with Blame, so read if you want some more story and art.
Abara: The main issue with this story is its world not being particularly interesting outside of Nihei's character and monster designs. Still well worth a read though.
Only if you just want art and nothing else matters tier:
Blame Academy (and so on): A collection of oneshots, spin offs, and two small chapters of Blame story tied together in one book. This focuses a lot on Nihei's coloured pages, which are frankly amazing and 100% worth a look at.

I'm reading vagabond and it's really pissing me off. Miyamoto Musashi's whole thing is that he's undefeated in duels but then they have him fighting to a draw and getting defeated and running like a bitch. Something is wrong with the japanese. They just can't have main characters that aren't pathetic even to the point that they have to take real life badasses and make them into losers so they can identify with them or something.

Nihel's stuff is pretty strange over all, I don't know if you've actually read his other stuff, but its all pretty "out there". The MC thing is standard Nihei character wise, and it is explained in KoS by the MC spending his entire life basically just talking to a dying old man and playing a virtual sim video game all day. The harem elements are whatever, the MC is the best pilot and literally famous - so he has bitches who love him, kind of standard stuff for that genre. To me Knights of Sidonia is Nihei making waifubait for popularity, while keeping his horror filled scifi worlds in-tact. I think the story/world underneath the haremshit is actually pretty decent, and the haremshit itself isn't awful or too fanservive filled; which makes the overall experience an alright read in my books.

Fair enough. It is a bit strange, but I think it was explained well enough in the world so I don't mind it. It's also not too jarring, you don't have it flip floping tone in the middle of a battle or something. Usually anime/manga has a terrible problem with having comedy/romance suddenly interject into a dark and gritty scene, ruining any feeling or atmosphere. Yea no problem, Noise/Biomega/Abara are nice to read if you love Blame, but just not at the same level story wise in my opinion. Finished reading basically every (translated) work from Shirow Masamune. Guess I'll do a quick ranking/guide for them in order if anyone is interested. If anyone else has anything to mention about Shirow I would love to hear it, it's quite the "experience" reading his work to say the least.
Must read tier:
Nothing if I am to be honest. Not even Ghost in the Shell really deserves to be here despite what you might think due to the movies/anime. Shirow really lacks the ability to tie his stories together properly in a cohesive narrative. Fantastic worlds, great ideas setting wise, and even better themes/messages; but he just isn't great at stories in my opinion.
Worth a read tier:
Appleseed: I actually liked this more than Ghost in the Shell (the manga form anyways). The two stars of the story Deunan and Briareos are fantastic and bounce off each other really well. The mech designs are amazing as typical of Shirow, the world is explained very well, and of course a heavy helping of political/philosophical ideas sprinkled on top. Sort of falls off the tracks during the later half of volume 3 and all of volume 4, but that's just Shirow's weakness in not being able to connect events properly.
Ghost in the Shell 1.0/1.5: It's Ghost in the Shell, just as you remember it from the movie! Uh… well not really. You are in for a SHOCK when you read these, very different feeling than the movie. That being said, the same philosophical/politic moments are here, just don't expect the characters themselves to be even close to what Oshii presented in the 1995 film.
Orion: Most magical than scifi, but still a very cool world. I don't think it was as good as either Appleseed or GitS, but its still interesting enough to be worth a read.

Dominion/Dominion C1 Conflict: The Pseudo-sequel "C1 Conflict" is better than the original Dominion, and its technically in a different world, but so many references are made to the original that you are forced to read both. Is it good? Not really. Is it bad? Not really. Not really worth a read in my opinion.
Schizo tier:
Ghost in the Shell 2.0: Do you like incomprehensible and psychotic technobabble? Do you like Pantyshots? Well don't you worry, Shirow has you covered. 300 pages of indescribable, incoherent, and utterly nonsense dialog while the MC contorts herself in any position possible to show off her panties on each and ever panel. I'm not even joking by the way. There is a story here, and it might have been ok, but good luck digging it out underneath the endless esoteric technical terminology. Even when you do figure out what in god's name the story actually is, its still not worth reading 300 pages of idiotic technobabble to go through it again.
Absolute dogshit do not read tier:

Eden was alright, I thought that basically every action scene was hollywood tier stuff. Especially Sophia/Kenji being undeafeatable gods of the matrix was a bit too much for me, every scene involving these two were basically just a waiting game for when the asspull shows its face.

I've been reading solo leveling lately. It's your classic zero to hero story. It is pretty damn uninspired and blatantly rips off of several other anime (and video games) but at the same time, that's fine because that's what all anime do just not as blatantly as this one. The mc basically has no flaws and makes no mistakes and easily overpowers his opponents and has massive plot armor but it's all fine I still enjoyed it. The aspect ratio of the format is ass though. It's clearly made for phone consumption. I found it funny how much the author clearly wants to rip on the Japanese. They are constantly being evil and getting alternatively btfo or saved by the koreans.
Overall it's not exactly a masterpiece or anything but it's a decent power trip fantasy manhwa.

When's the next chapter?
I finished all the currently available chapters of Tales of Demons and Gods. I enjoyed this one quite a bit. Started reading martial peak because it is another popular manhua but sadly it's nowhere near as good. The author isn't completely without talent, but there are dozens of chapters in-between anything that could be considered creative or interesting. Anyone know of some good manhua dealing with "cultivation"?
Started reading How to Fight. On chaper 14. Pretty good so far other than the haremshit they're setting up and the author acting like TKD is actually an effective martial art. I don't have high hopes for the martial arts aspects of the story if the author actually thinks TKD is legit. I swear the koreans do this in literally every martial arts thing they produce, it's like they have some sort of fetish that they just can't let go around how their shitty useless martial art is actually not shitty and useless.

I started reading some manhuas on manhuaplus.com, and I have to say I really enjoy it. For some reason the comment section there reminds me of the old internet back when it was fun. People just post memes and fuck around for fun. It honestly made me wonder if maybe what I missed about old internet was the fact that most of us were kids just trying to have fun. Now everyone is grown up and always working some angle, but on this one site it's just memes for fun. All the stuff is full color and is updated much more regularly than most other stuff. Idk what the chinese are doing to produce manga that quickly, maybe some slave labor shit but whatever it is it's working.

After reading a selection of Japanese, Korean, and Chinese manga it seems like there are consistent trends starting to emerge. Japanese MCs are often self-effacing beta males, the stories and characters and themes explored are more complex. There is lots of moralizing and social commentary.
On the other hand you have the Chinese manhuas which have much more conservative values, the characters are shallow and undeveloped, the stories mostly revolve around plot and move very fast, and there is almost zero moralizing or social commentary to be had at all. The MCs are often borderline villains with extremely grey morals. They will steal, lie, and kill just because it benefits them.
Korean manhwas I have found to be similar to the Chinese in terms of character development, just a bit better, but they have more social commentary and a level of moralizing in-between Chinese and Japanese with a level of overall complexity landing in-between the two as well. The tone of them is the most narcissistic by far. I just feel like every manhwa I ever read was written by a raging narcissist. There are also a lot of really unimaginative authors out there who just copy what other people already did or copy stuff from video games. This is true of every country of course but I feel the koreans are the worst in this department.

Personally never got into Korean comics because the grammar of the fan translations were univercially shit to the point that it made it hard to follow the story.
I swear some of the larger translator groups were using early 10s google translate with no attempt to correct or edit the grammar between languages at all.
The few Chinese comics I read were based on very old stories, folk tales, etc, so they were pretty moral of the day heavy in the same way Aesop's fables are.
Also read that one that was heavily inspired by the life of Siddhartha Buddha (only with Chinese characteristics and culture) so it was also pretty moralistic.
But honestly I haven't read ether of the two extensively to come to any sort of generalized conclusion.

Alright I'll posting about the stuff I'm reading, /jp/ needs an more active manga thread.
There's a fair amount of titles running on Gangan right now talking about otaku. Yankee Shota to Otaku Oneesan is, in my opinion, the best of the bunch right now. This is the tale of a fujoshi and shotacon fan called Kazuko and her neighbor, Ryuou, a 3D shota (from her perspective) that starts to follow her around for reasons she doesn't understand.
It's a very light and fun comedy and Kazuko in particular is quite a hilarious character with her mannerisms and excessive inhibitions. There's a balance here between the funny moments that centers around the interactions between the main characters, and the more drama-like aspects of the story, centered around Ryuou relationship with his parents. They're good people but maybe not the best parents in the world.
If you like to watch socially inept succubi forced into social interactions, then you'll certainly enjoy this title. What makes this interesting is how likeable Kazuko can be without trying too hard. There aren't any absurd moments purely for comedy (like with Watamote), her reactions seem more genuine and this adds a certain tenderness to it that really gives this title a peculiar charm.

It's funny, I read a few chapter of this last year, really liked it and intended to read all of it but for whatever reason I completely forgot it ever existed until I saw it's available at Piccoma by accident. It's a lighthearted comedy about a pair of hikineet siblings hanging around the house. Looks like the stuff I would like.

Mr. Fujiko passed at the age of 88 a couple of days ago. Doraemon was the first manga I read from beginning to end in Japanese. Here's a post to celebrate his memory. I'll be reading Dora for the next couple of days.

Rip. Glad he passed after he finished his project, many mangaka these days don't have that under their belt by the time they expire. Doraemon is definitely a legacy to behold. It's weird, I see Doraemon everywhere in Japanese art and culture, and even here in the west (It's a it's a JDM icon). Almost as much as Sanrio and Nintendo icons. Yet I have absolutely no idea what it's about, the names of the characters, or the extent it was released. The information just never organically landed in my peripheral and it doesn't look interesting to me enough to look it up.

To follow the life of Itai Shiori is like watching a tiny and precious trainwreck. It gets personal very quickly, too, because you’ll care about her from page one. Itai wants a boyfriend but she doesn’t quite know how to go about it and is not the best at reading social situations. And so comedic yet painful events follow.
The way the story unfolds is really clever in this one. Most of the text is not dialogue, but narration, like we’re watching Itai’s with the narrator and she too often will get flabbergasted about her actions. This really puts you in a position of wanting to help Itai. A lot. But you can’t. You’re forced to watch as she moves along being silly and living her painful comedy day by day.
A very engaging narrative and a very interesting read. If you enjoy awkward female protagonists and painful laughter, this title has you covered. The art is simple but it has a very unique charm I don’t quite remember seeing anywhere else. The author has a way of coming up with excellent facial expressions for the characters and even though it’s a simple, straightforward way of drawing the characters, there’s an attention to detail to the expressions that really adds a very special quality to them, it’s hard to put my finger on it. I guess you’ll have to read it to find out by yourself.
