Tell us your anime likes and dislikes or some sort of information about what you're looking for, or just examples of past shows you've enjoyed, and hopefully someone will recommend you a good show to watch.
Like >plot driven >interesting fantasy or sci-fi worlds >interesting social commentary or philosophical stuff >hero archetypes >good character arcs >political intrigue >fights where strategy is involved rather than just powering up with beams or determinationing your way through it
Dislike >romance (esp. pedo shit) >boring slice of life shit where nothing outside the realm of normality happens (cute succubi doing cute things) >high school setting and children mcs in general (not always I've just seen a lot of them and it's getting old especially as I myself am getting older) >slow paced >fan service that takes away from the plot and wastes time >comedic relief/gags (situational comedy is fine but the japanese tend to do this annoying shit where they put on wonky music and people yell at each other and they call it comedy) >style over substance (eg, lain, technolyze, FLCL) >lol so randumb shit
Specifically at the moment I'm looking for anime dealing with world domination or military/political conquest. I've enjoyed pretty much every one I've watched with that theme eg Code Geass, TTGL, No Game No Life, LOGH, Berserk, Magi, etc. I'm open to other suggestions as well though.
I don't need it to include all of my likes or avoid all my dislikes, just not be too excessive. I'm pretty indifferent to bad CGI/animation as long as the substance is good. Thank you in advance for any suggestions you might give me.
These aren't the least-watched shows I know, but Kino's Journey and Samurai Champloo might appeal to you. If I think of something else I'll let you know. I'm the guy who posted the other thread seeking recommendations so let me know if you have any animu you highly rate and I'll take a look and see
>>27659 >Code Geass Try Aldnoah Zero… or virtually any other mecha show. Don't know, not really into it myself. >TTGL Try Kill la Kill. >No Game No Life Try Kakegurui. >Berserk Try JoJo. >fights where strategy is involved rather than just Try Overlord, GATE, Drifters, Alderamin.
like >character driven mecha shows with cool fights and or designs dislike >shounen >shitty battle harem like high school dxd, Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry, shinmai maou no testament etc
>>27667 Gundam 0079/Zeta/ZZ/0080/0083/Victory/G/X/Turn A if you havent seen them Armored Trooper Votoms and it's OVAs, especially Mellowlink Heavy Metal L-Gaim, Xabungle, Goshogun, Dougram, Ideon, Layzner, Macross, obligatory 80s stuff Fafner and The Big O if you want something newer Getter Robo Armageddon Super robot stuff like Fighbird and Braves series Various Mazinger stuff Starship Troopers and LoGH OVAs if you want more sci-fi
>>27659 >plot driven >interesting fantasy or sci-fi worlds >interesting social commentary or philosophical stuff >hero archetypes >good character arcs >political intrigue >fights where strategy is involved rather than just powering up with beams or determinationing your way through it
>>27659 Should I make another thread if I want recommendations exactly opposite of OP's or is it okay with you, if I ask here? Literally just swap the like and dislike categories and I'm set.
>>27659 You may like the first season of Kaiji though I will warn you towards the end you may find it drags. The whole anime is about strategy, more specifically gambling in order to survive. Not saw the second season, but in the first season Kaiji does gain a strong desire to crush those who wronged him.
Zankyou No Terror is about two terrorists who commit an attack and investigating their motives aswell as the events that follow (can't reveal much without spoling). This anime is very very much about political conquest, trying not to spoil too much, they end up basically gain control over tokyo. Many people have compared it to Code Geass on MAL so I would recommend here. The two MCs are high schoolers, though it is explained logically why, it's a very serious anime, no moe moe shit.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is about two empires fighting for galactic domination, which of course inevitably, deals with huge amounts of politics. I've only saw some of the early episodes there over 100 and it is very slow paced imo you might find it too boring but this is one of the most political shows in all of anime.
Neon Genesis Evanglion if you haven't saw it. I would actually recommend the movies too, though the movies haven't all been relesed yet. Very plot driven, contains hero archetype, very political, fights involve strategy not just plot armor, TONS of philosophical/social commentary, mostly to do with human relationships and mental illness. Anime series is great but the ending is a disgrace, they basically ran out of budget so the last episode or two are low quality animation with no voice acting. Still a great watch though.
Youjo Senki is fast paced, about a man who is reincarnated as a loli nazi soldier. Despite the premise, has no pedo shit or fan service and is actually quite a serious anime for most part. Of course, it deals with politics being part of the nazi army. Slight twist however is that it's not set in the past but in an entirely different reality with alot of futuristic weaponry. Actually contains a decent amount of social commentry, mostly about how social hierarchies work, but it's mostly surface level failed normie stuff most of us here probably already know of. The MC is a bit Machiavellian though which is fun at times. Definitely isn't a hero archetype though quite the opposite.
I find that with serious political shows, hero archetypes get thrown out the window, as in politics there are no heroes, only winners and losers. Whoever wins is the hero. If you want a serious as in realistic, political show that truly delves into how it works, you have to throw away archetypes. The shows that do have an element of real politics where there is a hero archetype, the supposed hero always fails terribly and is either removed via death banishment etc or has to learn to not be pure and just. Something that actually happens in Kaiji and Youjo Senki. So if you do want a hero archetype, be prepared for it to be disbanded midway through the show.
>>27661 I've been meaning to watch Kino's Journey actually so I'll probably check it out. I watched Samurai Champloo but wasn't that impressed. Idk what to suggest to you, maybe try ghost in the shell stand alone complex if you haven't seen it yet. >>27664 Thanks for the suggestions. I've watched Aldnoah Zero and thought it was mediocre and forgettable but I was able to get through it which is something. I watched part of kill la kill but thought it was terrible and couldn't get through it at all, same with JoJo. I'll try watching some of the others though, maybe they're different. >>27666 Thanks I'll check it out >>27669 Yes, it is a masterpiece. I'll watch the remake when it's done airing. >>27677 Ask away. I made this thread because at the time of writing there wasn't one (although someone posted one while I was typing it up) and making threads gives me anxiety so I thought I'd make one for everyone to use in case others are like me and don't like making their own threads. >>27681 yes, I did like kaiji and LOGH, NGE, and youjo senki. I'll definitely check out the other one you recommended because I liked all the ones you recommended that I've seen already. Thank you for your response.
>>27659 >>27682 >Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood It has some dumb comedy but is otherwise a flawless plot driven action-adventure show. >Gundam franchise Gundam is mecha of course but many series in the franchise also have space opera, war drama and political intrigue. >The Super Dimension Fortress Macross Like Gundam it has basically everything you ask for. The only thing you might hate about it is that a romantic triangle drives a big part of the plot. >Hunter X Hunter Great action-adventure show. No romance bullshit (there are barely any females in the show), fights are very tactical, great characters arcs and has some interesting social commentary. >Space Battleship Yamato 2199 A remake of a series from the 70s, great space opera with lovable characters.
Like >iyashikei >characters on a journey >supernatural elements >philosophical themes and insights >naturally progressing romance (i.e. characters grow closer to each other through a commonly shared activity/hobby rather than forced 'love at first sight' shit >themes dealing with family relationships
Dislike >excessive fanservice >shounen battle type shit >harems (love triangles are ok though) >comedy that just involves the characters yelling really loud (basically the 6th point of the OP, hate that shit)
shows I've liked: >Mushishi >Haibane Renmei >Kino no Tabi >Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou >Mononoke >Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou >Koi Kaze >Spice and Wolf >White Album 2
Basically just looking for something calming to watch that's maybe similar to some of the above. I don't mind if they only hit on 1-2 of my likes.
>>27773 >characters on a journey >supernatural elements >philosophical themes and insights Shinsekai Yori Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita Wolf's Rain Made in Abyss Rolling succubi Ghost Hunt >iyashikei >naturally progressing romance >themes dealing with family relationships Hanasaku Iroha Barakamon Tamako Market
>>27806 Anime centered around endorsing NEET lifestyle? Even if there were a studio that would do such a thing, it wouldn't pass Japanese censorship. In Japan NEET is a ダメ人間, thus always being either the object of pity, or the target of shaming, or the butt of the joke, or all of that simultaneously. So of course any TV-based anime centered around NEETdom will be chock-full of anti-NEET propaganda in one form or another. Same's with other "hot" topics like suicide.
>>27855 He watched like maybe 20 titles tops in total, give him a break. Eventually he'll grow out of the pretentious snobbery period like most of us have (or stop watching anime altogether).
>>27856 Except he said he wasn't interested in watching things like Lain and FLCL. Not wanting to watch bottom of the barrel crab pandering slop =/= wanting pretentious snobbery.
When in doubt blame the American Military, because no way a Japanese Mommas Boy Skater Punk could possibly do anything so brutal, the Japanese are known for their peaceful ways going back millennia
>>27855 Alright let's take a look at how Code Geass does on my likes and dislikes.
Like >plot driven check >interesting fantasy or sci-fi worlds sci-fi and fantasy (inspired by Irish legend) mixed together in interesting way >interesting social commentary or philosophical stuff There are definitely interesting themes here with a highly militarized fascist world where empires rule through military might, and pacts with magical beings who give them special powers that allow one to expand one's military power. It's an interesting portrait of authoritarian rule and life under occupation that speaks to Japan's time under an authoritarian system ruled by the Emperor and being defeated and occupied in its past. It also deals with the ever-present Japanese anxiety over having been the only country to have been nuked when one of the characters develops something akin to the atom bomb's destructive ability in the show. It displays unifying nationalism and a return to a unification under the rule of one leader among the occupied that allows them to revolt and challenge the current hegemonic super-power. Japan has always remained fairly conservative and has centralized their power and acted with harmony, this is why they have always been able to stand up to their nearby neighbors in conflicts. They can call upon the collective force of their entire society if need be. This is an interesting glimpse into a very Japanese way of reliving their past and into their thinking today. >hero archetypes affirmative >good character arcs I think so. The plot really puts the characters in situations that drive character development. People may not like Suzaku, but I think it's a great character because you understand why he's motivated to act the way he does. He has to stay true to the same convictions that caused him to murder his own father or else he has to realize the error of his ways. It twists him and causes him to continue to view his betrayal as righteous. >political intrigue check >fights where strategy is involved rather than just powering up with beams or determinationing your way through it This is a little of a mixed bag. They do kind of have some technology upgrade asspulls, but there's some strategy to the fights and situations as well.
Dislike >romance (esp. pedo shit) There is some, but it's minimal compared to most others. >boring slice of life shit where nothing outside the realm of normality happens (cute succubi doing cute things) Things outside of the real of normality definitely happen here. >high school setting and children mcs in general (not always I've just seen a lot of them and it's getting old especially as I myself am getting older) It is a high school setting in part, but it doesn't really focus on going to class and high school drama >slow paced nope >fan service that takes away from the plot and wastes time There is a little >comedic relief/gags (situational comedy is fine but the japanese tend to do this annoying shit where they put on wonky music and people yell at each other and they call it comedy) Also some of this like the fucking cat episode or giant pizza making. >style over substance (eg, lain, technolyze, FLCL) nope >lol so randumb shit nope
So you can see while it does have some amount of the things I dislike, it's not in great proportions and it has many of the things I like.
>>27806 Kaiji is kind of like that I guess. I don't think they would make an anime about a neet where the neet doesn't do something interesting.
Likes >no plot >colorful palette >fast paced animation >absurd humor >characters have comically bad personality >doesn't take itself seriously at all >mindless
Dislikes >plot >character development >requires brainpower to enjoy >no self awareness or take itself seriously >not original, use a lot of tropes without parodying it >comfy sol with nothing happening
Previous show like this I have enjoyed >asobi asobase >ai mai mii >konosuba >senyuu
>>29493 Azumanga Daioh: the animation >a bunch of school succubi and their pointless adventures, the teacher is a scumbag, and some of the students are comically retarded
Bokusatu Tenshi Dokuro-chan >an angel comes to earth from the future to murder a boy because he is going to turn all succubi into permanent lolis in the future, really no point to the story or character development, and lots of beating the protagonist to death then reviving him >Renai Boukun basically a parody of death note, a scumbag angel (actually a cupid- who cosplays as a shinigami) creates an expanding love triangle (really no story to it)
Rosario + Vampire >a boy who failed out of every school with no future ahead of him winds up going to a school for monsters thanks to his father finding an acceptance letter. this one has loli witches, vampires, and actual succubi, and pointless repetitive fight scenes
There was also that anime about airsoft if anybody can remember the name, I stopped watching because the characters were so awful, which reminds me of Mitsubishi colors
Not sure if this is the best place to ask this, but I don't want to start a new thread just for my question. I am thinking of watching Neon Genesis Evangelion, I tried to get into it a few years ago but lost interest after a few episodes. In your opinions, is it worth watching, does it get more interesting as it goes on? And what do you like/dislike about it? (Preferably without spoiling anything please) My tastes in anime tend to be pretty casual/mainstream I guess. Also any other recommendations you might have for me would be appreciated as well. Here I'll just list some anime I liked, in no particular order.
Berserk, Kaiji, Monster, Death Note, Steins;Gate Serial Experiments Lain, Boogiepop Phantom (the old one) Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, KonoSuba, One Punch Man, Sakamoto desu ga Dragon Ball Z I've spent way too much time watching and rewatching I liked Dragon Ball as well, GT never clicked with me though, haven't tried Super And I love Satoshi Kon movies, I've seen three of them so far. Paprika, Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress. It makes me so happy that stuff like this exists.
>>29540 Personally I am not a big fan of EVA but it's worth watching through once because of how iconic it is to anime as a medium.
Some anime I recommend; >Legend of the Galactic Heroes Best space opera ever, not just in anime but anime medium. It's way better than Star Trek or Star Wars. >Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Another Great Space Opera >Hunter X Hunter It's another long running action-adventure series like Dragon Ball >Hajime no Ippo Classic boxing anime. I don't even like boxing but it's such a fun and well made show I marathoned the whole thing.
Like >good characters >philosophical stuff and new ideas >hero archetypes and genius types >gambling >fights to the death
dislike >style over substance >random shit
shows I have liked: >LOGH (best I have ever watched) >Kino's Journey >Kaiji >Akagi >Berserk >no game no life >Kakegurui >Akame ga kill >Aoi bungaku >Casshern Sins >Paranoia Agent >Katanagatari >Parasyte >Mirai Nikki >Shigurui
>>29546 Kurozuka Bokurano Gungrave Gyo Death Parade Aku no Hana Youjo Senki Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom Ranpo Kitan: Game of Laplace Deadman Wonderland Guilty Crown Coppelion
>>29546 Would recommend >Last Exile (and the sequel series) about freelance pilots, deals a lot with philosophy and the politics of a future world, villains and heroes, and has an immersive world if you can get over some of the unique CG they add in >gangsta heroes (sort of) who work as freelance errand runners/hitmen, though the series lacks some explanation, there are plenty of fight scenes and the protagonists try to help people which often includes intense combat. >Aldnoah.zero not the most likable characters, but has genius/heroes who use mechs to combat futuristic mars inhabitants with indestructible mechs with only one fatal flaw >Schwarzesmarken East german troops in mechs fight space aliens, it seems people have mixed feelings on this one >planetes toted as a slice of life (but it is so much more), the story follows a bunch of astronauts working as space janitors, but the story ends up getting really heavy as the series progresses.
>>27681 >>>27659 (OP) >Youjo Senki is fast paced, about a man who is reincarnated as a loli nazi soldier. Despite the premise, has no pedo shit or fan service and is actually quite a serious anime for most part. Of course, it deals with politics being part of the nazi army.
Its WW1. No nazis in WW1. Aside from that your description is quite legit. Was a great show imho and went by to fast.
>>27775 Thank you for reminding me of Wolf's Rain. Saw it like 10 years ago and now i will have a rewatch soon. I recommend it as well to people who dont know it.
Blue Gender: A hyperviolent mecha anime about bugs taking over the earth. Essentially an anime starship troopers but non humorous. It doesn't really fuck around, and is pretty mature.
Kiddy Grade: Sci fi anime. It has two succubus with superpowers as the protagonists that work for an organization. I liked it's twist very much.
Gallery Fake: Anime about a guy running an art shop in japan dealing with fake and sometimes genuine artwork. Each episode (sometimes more), is centered around investigating a piece of artwork. If you enjoy shady protags, check it out!
Hakaima Sadamitsu: Deliquent gets space armor (and a living alien ride later), must beat up invading alien convicts that arrive onto earth and send them back.
Kaleido star: Succ enters a world famous acrobat circus. Bit of a slice of life, but i found it fun.
Nerima Daikon Brothers: This anime is a comedy one, with full intents and purposes, specifically crafted to be stupid(ly good in my opinion). I might exegerate it, but this anime is the Leslie Neilson movies of comedy animes.
Hell succubus: A succ larva literally from hell is summoned if you enter the name of someone you want dead onto her site. She kills them and then steals your soul when you die. The anime shows the way the hell succubus kills her victims. Can be pretty spooky sometimes.
Kyoro-chan: Pretty good kid anime. The protagonist is a chick (as in stage of growth) bird with a beak stronger than diamonds. Slice of life and comedy, but it does lightly leer towards more serious topics as well a couple of times.
>>29670 >A succ larva literally from hell is summoned if you enter the name of someone you want dead onto her site. She kills them and then steals your soul when you die. The anime shows the way the hell succubus kills her victims. Can be pretty spooky sometimes.
IIRC this anime has like 2 minutes of new content every episode, with the rest being a "waaah i was bullied, better enter the name on this website and get that person dragged to hell" could be thinking of another series though
>>27659 Houseki no Kuni Boku Dake ga Inai Machi Nichijou Black Lagoon Darker than black Dantalian no Shoka Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi Joker Game Isekai Shoukudo Yondemasuyo Azazel-san Pop Team Epic Re Life Arakawa Under the Bridge
I’m 9 episodes in on watching Violet Evergarden in Spanish.
You know I think I finally get why this show resonates with me so well: It’s the first time since I can even remember that I’ve seen an anime of that caliber and in that language chronologically. This is dating back to when I was starting Elementary school and would watch Pokemon, Dragonball Z, or even Sailor Moon for that matter.
Just thinking about how richly detailed, whether modern or classic, these anime scenes were, as well as the emotional weight of a character’s death, almost even brought me back to the blurry days of Knights of the Zodiac.
The irony is that I kind of didn’t want to finish watching this show out of lost interest (and me trying not to return to the past since it wasn’t exactly a picnic around the time I watched those shows), but since I had mad respect for Kyoto Animation’s vigor despite that horrible event earlier this year, and having made it more than halfway into the series, I kept going.
I’m glad I did since despite the added CGI textures and digital shading, that same abundance of effort put into detail once again testifies to, as Keanu Reeves’s Klaatu from The day the earth stood still, would put it:
“Nothing ever truly dies. The Universe wastes nothing, everything is simply transformed.”
>>34025 The second season was alright but it took almost to full first season for them to really figure out what they wanted to do with the show or how to work with their limited resources.
>>34015 I don't see how it is overrated. It is a excellent fantasy show that seems to be very loosely based on old school school revival table top role playing games. AKA everything is deadly, the PCs are all too fragile, and it takes wits, caution, and planing to make it out a dungeon alive.
>>34061 I enjoyed it because it had the protagonist be clever and pragmatic to come out on top rather then the usual over powered MC magic bullshit that are all too common in action anime. Then on top of that you have heavy psychological themes which I am a sucker for when done well. It does have it's flaws as all things do ( flat supporting characters come to mind), it is still well above average to the level of a good show that I have no problem recommending it to people who can handle mature media.
Besides, it wasn't the violence but that one scene in the first episode that triggered the phonies and sjw.
>>34600 No, it's pretty dumb and boring. Whoever wrote it does not understand the difference between technology and magic. It's nothing like ghost in the shell which has a coherent sci-fi universe. It's a jumbled mess which puts in gratuitous shots of nothing happening to trick people into thinking its deep. It could possibly be seen as allegorical for various types of mental illnesses like dissociative disorder or schizophrenia but that doesn't make it interesting or clever imo.
>>34600 It's all down to the atmosphere it evokes. If you're looking for a depressive, bluescreen glow techparanormal fix, then yeah, you're definitely going to enjoy it. It's really good at that. Lain and Kairo are probably my favorite media in that sort of downer horror sci-fi evoking early internet era or the fascination for it. It really gives you an extra if you actually used stuff like crt monitors and dial-up internet access back in the day.
>>34601 >Whoever wrote it does not understand the difference between technology and magic. It's called fiction and obviously a deliberate premisse for the plot.
Basically, I like good story and hate anything like sol and cgdct. I am fine with slice of life as long as it's an occasional filler episode though. As far as specifics are concerned, I genuinely like: >Action >Romance (has to be mixed in with another genre in this list, otherwise I probably won't like it) >Space opera >Sci-fi and/or fantasy >Psychological >Vampire succubi >Thrillers >Small tits, but big ass (lolis, adults, teens, doesn't matter) What I HATE: >Romance with no resolution >Detective anime >Superpowers >Racing anime (with initial d being the only exception) >Cow tits
>>29493 What shit taste. You are pretty much describing about aria the animation to a tee. >No story >Characters claiming they are working hard to get into a profession, while slacking off most of the time >Is on a teraformed planet, despite this, Akari (14 years of age) didnt even know what a meteorite was >Is braindead sol >Is a blend of fantasy/sci-fi in the worst possible way
>>34600 Yes, but only if you have imagination and are willing to read extra/dig into the show. Some people like >>34601 can't understand that SEL truly doesn't want to be "scifi" or any other genre. Lain doesn't care about plot, characters, setting, or anything like that really. There are only two things SEL cares about: it's themes and the feeling it presents with it's atmosphere. If you value plot, coherent world building, and such related things above all else then you will dislike SEL. It's not that kind of show, and doesn't even attempt to be. The aspects it cares about, man does it fucking hit them with a homerun. Like perfect 11/10 tier.
The blending of internet and reality, if one is who they think they are, if who others say they are is who they are, if their actions are who they are, the social isolation that internet brings, the strange groups or cults that appear because extreme people segregate with other extreme people on the internet, and much more. Lain IS deep, regardless of whatever insincere ironic shitposters say; but only for those who put effort into finding things for themselves. "Deep" shows mean exactly what they mean, that it requires effort to uncover or dig up what it has to offer. If want to watch it once and understand everything, then don't bother with deep shows.
Being deep doesn't mean it's good, but people like deep shows because you have to put yourself into what you are consuming. It's not just "someone else's story", it's almost become something you discovered and crafted while digging into it. Your interpretations of the stories and events are now attached to the story, so you become attached to that thing you did not create. Which is why people who enjoy SEL will tell you they LOVE LAIN.
>>37288 Crest of the Stars is an imperial romance in space. Banner of the Stars is a more traditional space opera. It's like LoGH told entirely from the perspective of the Empire, with a much narrower focus on the characters and setting. If that sounds interesting to you then you'll enjoy it.
>>37339 I remember when RECORD OF LODOSS WARS & SLAYERS was the best at this.
>>37340 My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! - Ending tl,dr: Female MC stuck in a game in the role of antagonist & gets a reverse harem by accident. Also all the succubi are gay for her.
>>37340 >>37341 Okay well, these aren't really harem but both Akatsuki no Yona and Norn9 have excellent soundtracks and female main characters with attractive male love interests.
Akatsuki no Yona in particular I would definitely recommend.
Idolish7 has a female MC surrounded by bishounen characters, but there is very little actual romance. The music is good though.
Both Harukanaru Toki no Naka de and Magic-kyun Renaissance are reverse-harem shows with good music, but tbh neither of them have broad appeal and I would hesitate to recommend them. They do satisfy your precise criteria though.
Like >absolutely filthy gag manga, especially circa 1970s-very early 80s >guro nansensu from the same era >arthouse and short films, but not trite like SeL >a select few of otaku comedies, like abenobashi or excel saga
Dislike >fantasy shows with too much exposition >anime with too many character archetypes and no original writing >high school SoL is the bane of my existence
>>34606 >Detective anime I like detective work in anime but 90% of them fail because it involves supernatural. Detective Conan being the most obvious exception.
>>37379 That show's writing was helariously bad and so was most of the show beyond the the gore. >>37380 Blood+ has better writing but is super melodramatic at times and the animation isn't as good as the shorter projects. The only real reason I didn't like it all that much is because I was expecting it to be like Blood the last vampire when it came out, which it really isn't.
