 No.37875

This thread is for discussion of anime you think you're missing out on. Recently, I've been trying to get into this new Madhouse original called "Sonny Boy". I saw some familiar staff and thought the show looked cool. When I got into it, the show already ran five or six episodes in. Now it's almost finished airing. I thought the first episode was cool, and I liked the second episode as well, but not as much as the first one. By the third episode I just wanted to smash my head against the wall. The characters all have the same snarky, lifeless, pseudo intellectual attitude. They all act like typical sheltered Tokyo brats. Another thing that irks me is the amount of uncreative still scenes there are. It makes the episodes drag for so long, and it's like their only purpose is to save money for a classic "super cool key animator moment" that lasts 10 seconds or less. Normally I know when to stop, but judging by the discussion of the show I've seen online, it looks like the show gets better as it goes on. So I either suffer through more episodes with no pay off, or I agonize through a bunch of schlock just for that one "golden" episode. I regret not watching Sonny Boy weekly. Anime is so 'off' these days, that I can't imagine keeping up with shows without having to wait a week in between.

You should watch it! Episode 6 really tilts the entire thing on its head and makes you realize there was ALWAYS more to it than meets the eye

watched 3 episodes and did not get into it.
is it really worth watching more? seems convoluted

 No.37903

Probably a lot of longer shows that have tons of "down time" and pacing issues where you can feel them stall for time.
I am sure there are a lot of cool moments, character development, and story/plot developments but I have a much lower tolerance than when I was a kid for shows that pad their run time and episode count with bullshit that kills the pace and destroys all narrative momentum.

So there are shonen shows I haven't even given a try even though I hear they are good because the genera probably has the most issues with the problems I spoke of. Like My Hero Academia, Hunter X Hunter, and JoJo. Heard good things about all of them, still haven't watched them. Well I watched a few dozen ep of Hunter x Hunter but that show has a really slow start due to heavy and gradual world building. Only reason I watched even watch it was because it was when I still had tv and it was on toonimi between two shows I was very much into at the time.

HxH is the only one listed I would suggest you watch. I do not like shouen shit at all but HxH is really great as long as you get past that first shitty hunter exam arc.
I'm not a homosexual so I could not enjoy jojo.

Nearly no anime is ever worth watching sadly.

Lmao. Jojo is good though, if you liked hxh im surprised you didn’t like it.

 No.37916

I am a homo and I also didnt like Jojo but liked HxH. The relationship between Gon and Killua is great and they are cute

 No.37917

>>37915
some of the jojo faggotry is just lol buttsex comic relief and the rest doesnt involve kids so i guess nobody is interested (implicit gayness like speedwagon toward jonathan and dio toward a lot of his followers). i like the flamboyant subversion of macho shonen tropes that jojo does even if it's a bit shallow.

 No.37918

>>37917
The jojo characters are too buff for most gays, even the later artsyle that's way more slender is not very sexual for most.

 No.37921

>>37916
>The relationship between Gon and Killua is great and they are cute
It is great but it is not gay it is friendship and of course degenerate fags have to make everything sexual and in bad taste unlike yuri shipping that is always good taste.

>>37917
What makes jojo gay is not the show but the fans. People who are into jojo are always gay or closet gay as a general rule.

 No.37923

>>37921
i remember seeing someone share a tiktok webm of some succubus with a very unfortunate face doing a giorno cosplay at walmart with a fat kid and some other fag. they were making jojo references about everything in the store. that probably wouldve turned me off jojo entirely if i gave a shit about what kind of retarded fans things i like have. you could always make the case that they will cater to the retarded fans, but i think the anime adaptation didn't actually start airing until after the latest part of the manga (which just ended recently, although it wasn't too great) started getting published. the anime will probably be half-decent through part 7, but the series is probably dead overall at this point. it's as mainstream as dbz or naruto and its fans are a different beast of stupid.

 No.37925

sonny boy is great from the start imo the best anime of the year so far
i think you just like a different kind of anime

Jojo actually has pretty good pacing for a shonen anime, except perhaps for part 1 and 3, and even then it's not that bad compared to other series.

Is the new Jojo in jail any good?

 No.38053

>>37941
I disagree. I like the chimera arc don't get me wrong but it's stretched out way too much and it's edgy. Really edgy.
The arc when Gon and Leorio are looking for Killua and the yorknew arc are my favorites. The chairman arc was good too.
Hunter exam was meh and the greed island arc was meh too. I liked the ED but that's all.

You should really watch attack on titan. It's a masterpiece.

 No.38436

>>38057
Chimera ant arc was long and boring with power levels accelerating too quickly. It was my least favorite part.

 No.38443

Almost all of the classics. I mostly enjoy lowbrow smut like romcoms and and harems, it takes a great deal of effort for me to watch something like Evangelion or Lain.

 No.38449

>>38443
Evangelion has some SAABISU for your willy, if you feel like trying it out sometime. In fact, we get a pantyshot from Asuka within the first few scenes of her introduction.

 No.38462

>>38461
That was not the intent, I too love the monogatari series. It’s got a lot of ecchi though no?

 No.38463

>>38462
It does have tons of that, but by calling it a classic you'll draw the ire of contrarians who just really really hate any sort of lowbrow smut/ecchi in their anime. The kind of contrarian who insists that media must be super deep and/or philosophical to have any artistic merit.

 No.38464

>>38463
Oh I didn’t realize such people disliked monogatari. I will say that monogatari definitely loves playing with philosophy.

IMO a classic is just anything that has stood the test of time. So stuff like CCS would be a classic, even though it’s about as basic a mahou shoujo as can be.

 No.38466

>>38435
I wouldn't call it a masterpiece but it's very good and for me especially good because it hits on so many things I enjoy. I wish I could watch it for the first time again, was a really special adventure.

I kinda wanna jump in on this. I'm an incredibly lazy guy though with absolutely 0 motivation and it takes a lot of effort for me to put a show on and watch it instead of just watching Youtube. Let alone if said show I want to watch is very very long now. I don't mind me some shounen though but can anyone sell me on this if it really is worth watching?

When it came out I began reading Boku no Hero's manga and participated in the imageboard discussions, but dropped it. It wasn't really interesting and I believe never truly had much potential or direction to go. Last time I saw all discussions inevitably ended in "shipping" as people speculating which characters would make love pairings, even if it didn't even make any sense in the actual story. I don't know if that's the result of popularity among females or what, but I'd say it's not worth it, neither for the manga/anime itself, nor for the community.

Attack on Titan is good, but the discussions were bad because I do believe most people were losing the point of the story. So I'd recommend the manga/anime is worth it, but don't bother with the discussions.

 No.38693

>>38692
It's popular because it's popular. Once a show's audience reaches a critical mass other people flock to it because watching anime is a community-oriented hobby now, and the social aspect is a big part of peoples' enjoyment.

 No.38694

>>38693
Yes, but I mean in the sense of instead of people talking about the possible mysteries the plot hold, or the next paths it would take, they just make love pairs out of the characters, even if devoid of the context of the story. It seems like a really feminine thing.

 No.38710

>>38690
Rather the opposite. I like slow-paced anime e.g mushishi. I love slow art films like ingmar bergman and tarkovsky. Generic ADHD shonen dont stimulate me though

No the same wiz, but I personally love Wild Strawberries and The Seventh Seal. They are both about death, aging, Nothingness and existentialism, Bergman was really obsessed with these topics.

 No.38734

>>38694
It's "coomers" too. Inevitably it always goes that way since people running out of things to speculate, so they opt for the lowest brow of discussion which makes them feel good. Mainly fawning over anime succubi and posting ecchi/porn or coming up with weird borderline erpish scenarios. It's why I couldn't stand browsing /a/ anymore because every discussion inevitably turns sexual and I just don't care for it.

 No.38739

>>38713
Thanks wiz, I’ll check these out.
Slightly off topic, but philosophy and study of death is becoming intriguing once again.
