When I was a kid I always wanted to have a PS2,but my family was too poor to buy videogames.
Now I finally bought a PS2 fat, even when I have a PS3 and PS4 Pro for some circumstances I can't afford to buy games for those right now,so I bought a PS2, the guy on ebay said that it was in good condition and it should arrive in a couple of days.
It includes 2 dualshock controllers and most importantly a FMCB memory card,so I can pirate and create my own DVD's.
What are the best games I can play on it? And homebrews/hacks? The PS2 looks beareable on a HDTV?
Please don't suggest emulators like PCSX2,my PC is too slow for that, keep it PS2 only.
It really depends on what your favorite genres are OP, PS2 has an enormously gigantic library. Not to mention in addition to all those super-popular games there's a lot of really good hidden gems that almost nobody has ever heard about.
>>36702 That's a tiny list, and I'd throw out a fair number of titles from it.
I identify with your posting OP. I was always a poorfag as well and first things I started buying when I joined the labour force was video games and toys I never had in my childhood. Meanwhile my cousins grew up in relative affluence with their own televisions and video game consoles in their bedrooms. And also cable tv.
Here are some of my favorite PS2 titels: >GTA Vice City >GTA San Andreas >Yakuza 1 >Yakuza 2 >007 Goldeneye Rogue Agent >Tomb Raider series >Metal Gear Solid series >Tenchu >God of War series >Devil May Cry Trilogy >Shadow of the Colossus >Final Fantasy X >Okami >Kingdom Hearts Duology >Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 >Naruto Accel 1 >Midnight Club 3 Remix >Need For Speed Underground 2
Overall I think only the SNES had a better library than the PS2.
If you have a fat you should get a hard drive for it, instead of using disks. I FCMB'd a slim and used network-loading instead of disks. Worked okay. Technically it was faster than the DVDs but it didn't feel like it.
Do you have any kind of upscaler in order to convert the video signal?
Here are the titles I currently own in a physical form:
PS1 Vagrant Story Silent Hill Final Fantasy VII Star Ocean The Second Story
PS2 Killer 7 Farenheit Forbidden Siren SMT: Persona 3 SMT: Digital Devil Saga SMT: Digital Devil Saga 2 Shadow of Memories Glass Rose Rule of Rose ICO Devil Summoner Raidou Kuzunoha vs The Souless Army Manhunt Persona 4 Silent Hill 4 : The Room Silent Hill 2 SMT: Lucifer's Call Maken Shao - Demon Sword
>>38028 >i don't think its worth the $ You said it all! Of course there's a few recent games I wouldn't mind playing but not to the point of actually getting a PS4. I don't feel any appeal towards the latest consoles principally because the idea behind these is to build a social environment. I play games out of nostalgia and to this date the PS2 remain the most appealing console to me.
>>38029 I played the 2DS and it's insane how little it has changed with the DS, i feel like it's the same graphics and ocarina 3d could have been done on the original DS. New consoles seems like big normie scam to me, i now realize the greed of the videogame industry. I guess i'll stick to pirating solo pc games (multiplayer is filled with lootbox shit) and emulating ps2. What do you think?
>>38029 Good post. Fuck this trend of "social gaming". What the actual fuck? Kill all streamers, people who go to cons, people who use fucking twitter for games, people who play online multiplayer shit, and any other social nonsense. I wish I could slit the fucking throats of social gamers. They make me embarrassed to play games, fuck.
>>36700 I'd recommend pretty much all the SMT games from PS2 (even Persona), they're all awesome. Along with that, Maken Shao if you're into action games, it's also made by atlus and a reboot of the dreamcast version which had problems. Also, >Baldur's Gate 1/2 >Champions of Norrath >Battlefront 1/2 (the ones before EA butchered them) >Midway Arcade Treasures >all the Xenosagas
and since PS2 is backwards compatible with PS1, here's some PS1 games if you're interested: >Xenogears >Final Fantasy 7 >Crash Bandicoot >Bushido Blade >Persona 2 (both IS and EP)
>>38036 Profit in itself isn't bad, when you put out a product you're taking a risk so it's normal to expect a reward for your troubles. As long as you don't split hairs you're fine by my book. I find limitating that gaming industry consider cinema as its equal when it used to be a source of inspiration among many others. As mentionned here >>38037 >>38038, the fact that they made everything in order to "bring people together" is sickening.
Personally, I went with the DSLite simply because it wasn't region locked. I can't blame you for avoiding multiplayer either, there's nothing left to salvage at this point. You can't go wrong with emulating, this is a nice way to make up your mind before if you ever consider getting the real deal in the future.
>>38040 >the fact that they made everything in order to "bring people together" is sickening
The people who play video games are predominantly normgroids/failed normgroids and those two groups desire social contact. No shit they were going to do that when technology let them.
>>38036 It's insane how shitty the hardware is for it and the 3ds for how expensive they both are. I think it literally had like two-hundred megs of ram.
>>38038 >a whole generation has already grown up who never knew games you had to play alone i'd say the opposite, back then even outcasts were playing games with others every now and then. right now everyone is online, but essentially plays alone.
>>39088 Also I see your point about games integrating twitch or whatever, but it's all easy to ignore and back then we had this shit too, like sonic 2 being made to play with a second person, and if you won't, you'll have an annoying AI with you. The whole fighting genre being super popular despite being terrible games to play solo. Pokemon having 2 versions of the same game to force you to socialize. I think now it's a lot easier to enjoy games without socializing, you even don't have to go to the store to buy one, it's sold by a system that can't judge you for playing "weeb shit".
>>39089 Online was the best thing to happen to Pokemon. You could finally get pokemon from the other version without having to know groids who had it. The only problem is trying to evolve pokemon that only do so by trading.
Get Castlevania Symphony of the Night whatever you do OP.
It is the greatest Castlevania game to be made or at least one of the top three next to Super Castlevania IV and Castlevania Rondo of Blood.
Note that you'll need to buy a PS1 memory card to save your progress on it however.
As for some other games I'll recommend to you now?
GTA Vice City- my personal favorite of the entire GTA series as the game just had ridiculous amounts of personality to it and the best overall soundtrack of a GTA game ever.
Firepro Returns- if you're into pro wrestling games the series this one belongs to is one of the best next to the old AKI games for the N64. Yeah Firepro World is out now on Steam but you may not have a PC powerful enough to run it.
All the Street Fighter II, Fatal Fury and other fighting game compilation discs, seriously the PS2 is an embarassment of riches when it comes to this sort of thing.
You should get the Capcom classics discs too as they have some good shit on them as well in compilation form.
Resident Evil 4
MGS2 and MGS3 (Not sure if MGS3 was on the PS2 but I think it was so if it is definitely get it if MGS series is your cup of tea).
Gran Turismo 3- one of the best damn driving games of all time.
I've never played Ico or Shadow of the Collosus but I want to and people have said they are good so get them if they interest you as well.
Lord of the Rings The Two Towers was a pretty decent arcade hack n'slash on this console along with I believe the Gamecube and the Xbox also so get that and Return of the King (if it's available) if you're so inclined.
Jack and Daxter is probably good along with Rayman and I don't believe I've played either of those yet either but I want to so if you also find those games interesting and get to buying them and playing them before me its all good.
>>39270 >it's popular so it's shit It's not like anyone is holding you at a gunpoint and forcing you to play it you contrarian faggot. Doesn't change the fact that objectively it's THE definitive metroidvania and in some ways still the best one overall to this day, hopefully Bloodstained will finally dethrone it.
>>39273 You realize you're just shitposting at this point? Of course not. Your opinion is the ultimate opinion and all others are wrong. Also cool buzzwords.
>>38028 > ratchet and clank and sly games >ratchet and clank and sly games You can pirate them easily on ps3. Im with >>38036. You're better off just watching gameplay on youtube. New games went to shit and i don't have time anymore to play old games. On the other side if you can get fun with simple games designed for kids such as ratchet and sly games then you would probably enjoy all other games available for consoles. >>38038 couch co-op >>39271 >>it's popular so it's shit Usually first game/movie/anime season/manga is good. Then it gets popular and next releases are shitty, made on the knee in a hurry to make more money while it's still popular.
If you like games. If you REALLY like games, then PS2 blows PS3 and PS4 out of the fucking water. There are so many good exclusives on PS2, the only other console that rivals it in terms of fun is probably the Wii.
>>38029 This. There are some consoles that simply won't be rivaled by anything, even a beefy PC (unless PS2 emulation is better than I know) >PS2 >Wii >DS >PSP Huge libraries of exclusives and timeless classics.
>>41892 You can play 99% of PSP, NDS, Wii and probably 95% of PS2 games on even fairly low-end PCs. I play a fuckload of PS2 stuff including really obscure things and I've yet to find something that completely didn't work, although there are some games you really need a decent CPU for.
>>41921 You mean when it's not working correctly, right? Surely you're not one of those people that say "doesn't feel right…" when PC gets a console port?
>>41925 I think there are hacks for wiimotes but I never used them so I can't speak to how good they are. I personally haven't emulated ether wii games or NDS games yet (I mainly emulate much older games) but I have heard good things about NDS emulation so I assume it probably works fine once you get used to it.
>>41921 The power of big corporations to brainwash people is truly astonishing.
>>41925 You can hook-up wiimotes very easily to Dolphin, and most games that don't have too complex motions can be just played by assigning specific motions to buttons on gamepad\keyboard. As for NDS I never had any issues myself but there's probably one or two games out there that might be tricky to pull off.
Anyone have experience with SSHD loading times in a slim? I used a plain old hdd for my internal drive mod and it takes forever for OPL to load all the games, like 200gb.
>>36702 >its definetely the best console ever made with the largest library Can't argue with that. There are so many good games that it will keep you occupied for ages. It played mostly RPGs, so that's what I can recommend to you: >Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King >Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne >Rogue Galaxy >Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria
sub rebellion is my favorite game i never see anyone talk about. it is somewhat arcadey with exploration elements
>>39269 its the greatest castlevania if you think of it as a spinoff maybe. it doesn't play anything like the platformers, being way too open ended (with platforms being a small part at least as far as ive played which was rather fair and i like it). you will be lost occasionally, definitely an acquired taste sort of game, it took me until i heard the crystal teardrops ost to finally start really getting into the game >>43039 it has the best menu music
>>41889 I feel compelled to mention its missing all four of Caves shoot em ups. DoDonpachiDaiohJoh Mushihime Sama, Espgaluda and Ibara. I recommend starting with Espgaluda if you are unfamiliar with the genre.
>>46252 You should give more info: CPU? Ram? At a first sight I'd say yes. But fast paced gayms are demanding and a flawless emulation of ps2 still needs a 2014 i5 at least.
Here's one of my favorites, it's Shadow of Rome. Its an arena based action game where you play different Roman games, all of them include murdering others for your and the plebs entertainment. The other half of the game is a clunky and kinda difficult stealth game, feel free to look for walkthroughs, the action in the game is incredible and people often abandon it because of the stealth.
>keep it PS2 only I'm sorry but i want to share my conclusions on psVR with my fellow wizards.
Tldr- DONT BUY IT. Some games are immersive as hell and I'm gonna sink a lot of time into it despite all the negatives below. -resolution is too low. I can see single pixels. -hardware is too weak to handle high quality textures and rendering. Most games look like what I see without my glasses on. Reading text is (in most cases) a low resolution strain on eyes. Sometimes it's not readable at all. -tracking is not bad bud not what is the best. There is no boundary check to make sure I won't hit a wall. What I expect from vr is being able to walk around my room freely and without a fear of irl obstacles. this leads to a little feature that saves me from readjusting helmet after talking it off to look around irl - there is no camera view that allows to walk around and see irl world.
So basically 3 big deal breakers for perfect vr experience. Space for movement is more elaborate topic because not everyone have an empty, 10 square meter room to walk around. Some people are fine with couch vr. But Being able to walk around garage in virtual rickality and reaching far away objects is great. Other games benefit from it too. That's why it's really important part of vr imo. (And don't forget porn games are exclusive for PC) I'm using it for 2 days so far and on a second day I used it for an hour or two. I don't get the whole "vr legs" thing. There was one game "loading human" that gave me serious motion sickness; turning in farpoint and skyrim isn't easy for my brain either but there are other options for movement. I'm sticking to smooth turning because despite it's Caveats it doesn't break immersion unlike sharp turning/teleporting. Oh and super hotVR is my favourite so far. It reminds me of hotline Miami but in 3d and VR with my whole body as part of the game. I have to move around to dodge bullets and get a better aim. Graphics don't need much processing power so it looks decently.
Loved that game. Rented it as a kid from a chain similar to Blockbuster and had a blast finishing it. Personally, even as a kid, I thought the stealth sections were just as cool as those that focused on the combat. Not sure how I'd feel about it now exactly, but, either way, I have fond memories of it. Perhaps I'll even emulate it at some point, since it'd be interesting to revisit it after all this time.
As an aside, it's interesting to note that 'Shadow of Rome' was the prelude to the 'Dead Rising' series. The use of wrestling moves specifically, like in that gif, was something you can see that was imported over into DR. Would've liked to have seen a SoR 2 somehow instead of DR, but that's just me.
>>36700 among my childhood collection, these are my favourite PS2 games (in no particular order):
Red Faction 2 Star Wars Battlefront 2 Urban Chaos: Riot Response SSX Tricky Ghost Recon Jungle Storm Killzone (the original) Conflict: Desert Storm The Godfather Lord of the Rings Return of the King Jak X Combat Racing Burnout 3 Takedown
Definitely check out the Ace Combat series GTA Manhunt (second one was pretty bad but the first one is good) Bully Shellshock 'nam 67 Conflict series Black Grand Turismo series Cabelas dangerous hunts and big game hunter titles were fun imo Brothers in Arms series Medal of Honor series Metal Gear
>>50491 It depends on what you can find. You can probably find wayyyyy better prices for certain things. A Japanese PS2 can be scored for maybe like $100 bucks, while the games can vary from $20 all the way up to $100+ (IIDX Empress and DDR X were the main culprits). The Beatmania controllers can be a bit scarce, but there are plenty of way better third party options like the ones you can find at the following website:
The FP7 and the Platinum Edition Evolution are particularly popular alongside the newer Pheonixwan. As you can probably see, they are a bit expensive.
As far as DDR controllers, that's where it gets difficult. I mainly just use my PS2 controller to play them as finding a good DDR pad that is not expensive as shit is hard to come by. Stay away from DDRGame pads. They have weird sensors.
Overall, it depends on how dedicated to these games you are. I've been playing DDR for a long time and played IIDX on and off until I got the PS2.
Ebay and Amazon are very good places to look for these things. Maybe Ebay more so.
>>50491 Also, there are other ways of playing Beatmania and DDR on your computer. You probably may know about Stepmania for DDR, but there's one for Beatmania IIDX called Lunatic Rave 2. It's kind of a pain to set up and you need to have your computer's locale set to Japan before you download and install it. You can find many Stepmania charts on this website: https://zenius-i-vanisher.com/v5.2/simfiles.php
And for Lunatic Rave simfiles, it looks like there's a reddit community (yikes) for it. You might have to do some digging yourself as I'm not too much of an expert.
>>50492 >>50493 Wow thanks for the detailed posts! Its certainly something I am gonna think about picking up some time.
I played a bit of beatmania with a kinda crappy cloth controller, it was actually better than I thought it would be before it kinda stopped working. About a year ago I started playing a game called MUSYNX on the PC and it really got me interested in rhythm games. It bet it would be nice to play on something that isn't my keyboard.
I'm a bit curious about the "cloth controller" though. I'm trying to imagine what a cloth controller for Beatmania would look like or how it would even function.
First of all, there are 2 problems that I know for the PS2, at least the slim variant in regards to loading games. The first issue is one that I've dealt with and that is that there is an unseen switch that the lid presses when its closed. This switch is responsible for telling the PS2 that the lid is closed and to proceed in spinning the disc. It likely wears out over time and, while there are more surgical ways to fix it, the solution that has helped me is to put some small weighted object on the top of the lid while you play. I use a NOKIA 3310 to hold the tray down personally, just to give you an idea of how much weight I put.
Now, if it's a legitimate read error, it could be a problem with the laser itself. Sometimes it just needs to be cleaned, but other times the part itself needs to be replaced. These parts can be bought on the internet. I haven't done this myself, so I don't know how it's done. But there are plenty of videos on the subject.
>>50498 you can buy one of those cheap OEM replacement disc drives from ebay or take the opportunity to do the Free McBoot + hdd thing and use downloaded games instead of discs
>>50514 PS2 emulation is still pretty bad and you need a decent computer to play a game without slowdowns and graphic issues. >>50518 >Because a PC has non-videogame programs on it the fun aura is contaminated and the general feel of the game is altered negatively huh
if you have a good pc, you can emulate the PS2 easily. My 2013 setup gets it done easily and I think Shadow of Colossus runs better on my pc then on the actual console
>>36700 >When I was a kid I always wanted to have a PS2,but my family was too poor to buy videogames. you will play them all and then realize you wasted your time and you could not find the fulfillment you were looking for. at least that was what I felt like
>>36700 PS2 truly was the best PS, here are some of my favorites: Summoner 2 Dark Chronicle TimeSplitters 2 Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Guilty Gear X2
Every console post-Dreamcast is garbage and lack really great games that were plenty on PSX and Saturn (and on SFC, PC Engine and Famicom) and Dreamcast itself was shit (well, from programming viewpoint not exactly), it's default controller being a clear downgrade from Saturn 3D controller.
Only plethora of great Capcom and SNK fighters (and Shenmue, if you like that kind of game) make it worthwhile - with a stick.
>>38005 most ps2 titles are rendered in 480i, tvs do the deinterlacing but adds a ton of input lag, theres special devices like the retrotink5x pro that have a special deinterlacing mode but the things like $300 if you can find it
I picked up Ring of Red and I wonder why it is so overlooked. It's a fairly down to earth mecha tactical rpg like Front Mission with a fairly interesting setting. The unskippable animations and sluggish pace make it almost mandatory to play this emulated on fast forward though but despite that it still got me hooked. It's a pity they never made any other entry because it had a lot of potential.
Wow! What a coincidence, I've been playing PS2 games recently too. Recently got an $8 PS3 controller so I can jailbreak my PS3 too, for games that are too slow on my emulator (sly cooper 3 in particular is the only game I have had problems with on emulator.)
I recommend all of these except Klonoa (too easy) and Crimson Tears (haven't tried yet. haven't heard good things about it, mostly got it because the characters are sexy).
>>36700 I think if you can get yourself a PS3 (don't get a PS3 Slim, they aren't backwards compatible) then you can homebrew it and play any game you like. I don't have one though so I don't know if it's any good.
