 No.55545[Last 50 Posts]

Nebuchadnezzar. Man this game caught me by surprise. Just found out about this title 2 days ago. It has been consuming my life like no other game in a very long time. I'm a fan of the old city building managers like Caesar and Cleopatra but this one really hit it for me. Starting with the setting. Ancient Mesopotamia is one of those historical periods I was always fascinated by but for whatever reason never actually got in the right frame of mind to really sit down and read about it more closely. Nebuchadnezzar is divided by campaigns where you manage important Mesopotamian cities, from the neolithic and early bronze age, all the way to late iron age and classical antiquity. From Sumerians to Neo-Babylonians.

If you have played some city management games before this, it will be familiar to you but there are some very charming things about Nebuchadnezzar that I quite enjoy it and makes it perhaps my favorite of the bunch. I think the most interesting thing about the gameplay is how insidious failure is. You make a mistake but it won't be obvious at all until your city starts to fall apart, very slowly at first and then a sudden collapse if you neglect to realize it in time. There's a fair amount of micromanagement here which makes your mistakes harder to notice. You are just busy doing something else, without realizing a crisis is coming your way. This aspect alone fascinates me but there's a lot more to it than that.

Now, I've never ran an ancient, craddle of civilization city in real life before but I imagine this game does a good job simulating that in some areas. For example the constant fight for adequate space. It's no coincidence all ancient civilizations began near a river. It's amazing what a logistical nightmare Nebuchadnezzar can become because of the location of a river. If you're not very careful with how you plan things out, you'll waste that very, very precious valley space and your entire city will be churning in pain as you try to avoid your citizens to run out of bread. There's a very satisfying learning curve here where each catastrophic failure will teach you very valuable lessons.

Speaking of failure, this game doesn't pull any punches. It's quite hard if you compare to most games these gays, even on normal setting. Just learning how everything works is not enough. It will also test your patience in a good way. The objectives for each campaign really test how well your city is running. One of the common goals in each mission is acquiring, and most importantly, maintaining prestige. Sure it's not that hard to have a bunch of high tier houses with good flow of goods pouring in, but how long can you actually keep it going while expanding? This complication reaches a whole new level when social castes are introduced in later missions, because then you'll be juggling around dozens of different resources and at any moment the supply line can become compromised. If people are unhappy they just start leaving the city behind. A sudden lack of manpower is usually how you find out you made a mistake.

It's quite funny actually, there's a short term solution to this but I just realized it about 12 hours into the game. I think it was mission 7, I was having people leaving the city and just for the fun of it I spammed a bunch of shacks, effectively bringing people in and patching up the problem until I could properly fix it. You can do that for peasants but you can't just spam upper class. Turns out bringing in a bunch of cheap labor can solve some of your problems. Not all, but some. I'm playing an old version of this game and there's no consequence to this but I read the new version introduce crime, disease and fires, so you probably will have a lot of problems bringing in a bunch of poor people, packing them into shanty towns with no bread or water and use them to build your glorious Ziggurat for almighty Ishtar. Well, you can always just delete them for no loss of prestige. I think there should be consequences to oblitarate thousands of people after forcing them to spend 10 years building your monument but apparently not. Not for the version I'm playing at least. This game is still in development, I'm sure they'll introduce something to remedy this. Still quite fun as it is.

The graphics are nice, nothing special. In fact I could not find a single enticing image of this game. I think the workers could use a little more animation variety but I'm not complaining. It's very reminiscent of old city builders like the Caesar games. You also won't get much art or nice mission accomplished screens but the very few illustrations there are are very good. The music is damn near perfect. Some of those tracks really convey that ancient mesopotamia feel. Nice tracks to listen to as you're constanly causing and subsequently averting logistical crisis on your supply lines just to increase the clay tablet production. What can I say, people are hungry for those Gilgamesh stories and they don't have the internet yet. Clay tablets it is.

I'm currently on my third attempt on a later campaign and I'm still having a blast. If you liked anything I said here, give it a try. This game is so damn comfy. I never thought running a Mesopotamian city could be so satisfying.

So I'm stuck in one of the later campaigns. This is my second attempt at the city of Nippur, each attempt lasting about 6 hours and yet I can't get enough prestige for a pass. I tried my very best with a carefully executed plan and still it wasn't enough! That's amazing. I'm still not planning the city well enough according to the game's standards. And I only got this close because by the end I was basically just burning my money to try to keep everything running and expanding. This is a picture about 20 minutes after I basically gave up on this run. Alright, third time is a charm…

Yeah I'm amazed at the high standard the game expect you to reach in some of those goals. I think this is the hardest city sim I've ever played. I love the "collapse by logistical failure" this game has. It's a really nice mechanic. I see you're playing the newer version with fire, crime and disease so you're in for an even harder time than myself, it's going to be great! I'm too close to the end to switch versions now but I'll definitely look into it when I finish with this one.

>>55566
Give it a shot just for fun, don't worry about fine tuning your city, you can take the time and go at your own pace so it can be very relaxing. This game actually has no time limit for anything. That's another interesting aspect of it. Nebuchadnezzar doesn't pressure you with any time limit and still you'll be dooming thousands of little Mesopotamians regardless. But man is it satisfying and you get it just right.

Right, I got the hang of it, now. I'm on my way to the last city. Babylon was a lot of work but it didn't feel daunting at all. Focus on improving on a "house by house" manner instead of whole blocks at once and the possibility of failure is severly mitigated. I'll soon be posting a review of this game on the 'Post in this thread when you finished a game' thread.

I now know what IV and EV are in Pokemon. It is quite something to find out about these mechanics working under the hood. I do not think it is ever explained, or even hinted at in any of the games I have played, that the pokemon you defeat have an influence on how your newly caught or hatched pokemon will grow. Or maybe it is and I am retarded.

I can't recall if it was mentioned in the first few generations. I want to say it is mentioned at some point in the series, but I don't know how early. There is special training in gen 6 and special items in gen 7 for IV adjustment. Those stats have always been in the game in some form, though, starting with DVs and stat xp in gen 1/2.

I also destroyed a bunch of guardians in Hyrule field and castle and got enough money and parts to make the ancient armor+ancient bow and some ancient arrows.I also upgraded it to lv2 so now I have ancient proficiency set bonus which is nice.So I got the best armor and weapons early in the game.

Been playing Noita for the past week. Such a mixed bag. It's fun and there's skill involved but too much of your success depends on luck. That ruins it for me. Not only with getting decent perks and weapons but also by not having some random event killing you outright. The world of Noita is way to prone to constant accidents. Nothing you can do about it. Feels like 90% of the time I'm replaying the first 5 or so levels over and over again hoping to catch a break.

You can play sloppy and get all the way to the end or you can play carefully and die in the first 10 minutes. Feels too much like a lottery to put anymore time into it. Well, it's was fun while it lasted. For the most part.

 No.55641

>>55640
Mixed bag so perfectly describes Noita for me that it feels like it's a term invented just to describe this game. The idea of mix and match spells is super cool and fun to explore but then the gameplay renders this mostly pointless because you can get lucky and come across stuff to make a deadly laser and on the same run have an explosion dropping a boulder from half a level away on your head, killing you instanly, rendering the cool weapon you found useless. They come up with something interesting just to cover it with dirt immediately afterwards.

For the first few days I was exploring the spells on my own but the more the game punished me with accidents the less I cared. I ended up looking the wiki to the most powerful combinations and still didn't improve my chances of survival that much for the most part. I got all the way to the end once with the weapon you start with just because I got lucky to not get cornered by anything too deadly or being pushed into a vat of acid and getting pinned down by a single floating pixel you can't see because it has the same color of the background.

It's an unique game and fun for the most part but a lot of it is ruined because a lot of it is a lottery.

 No.55642

But the whole point of that genre is that it's random and you have to experiment. That's like playing a rythm game and complaining that you have to pay attention to the music.

 No.55648

>>55642
Well you don't have to experiment. You can finish the game with most random wands you pick later in game. So experimentation is secondary, while luck is primal. Should be the other way around.
I draw the line where once finishing a level I feel I got lucky instead of the result of my smart use of spell loudouts. And finishing levels on Noita feel like luck way too often for my liking.

This is obviously a superficial way to make the game longer but the thing with Noita is that it's good enough for not needing that at all. There's already so much going on and the replay value would be actually higher if the levels didn't feel like coin tossing so much.

So I just finished the game actually. Let's see how nightmare mode is. I would not be surprised if it's just all flammables catching fire from the start and 50% of the time the whole level blows up in your face before you do anything.

I've been playing Bomber Crew recently. I've wanted to play it for a long time, and I'm glad I'm having the chance at the moment.

First the good.

HOW the upgrades in this game work are really satisfying. In an RPG you just buy armor, it increases your defense, and you directly SEE that happen in battles. Here, you upgrade your mid-fuselage armor. Did it help? It depends:

- Is that actually an area that receives a lot of damage?
- What's your GOAL with that upgrade? Was your goal to avoid your plane breaking in two, or to protect the cabin crew?
- Does it fit your playstyle? E.g., do you have things set up for someone to grab the extinguisher right next to them and hop out to fix a burning engine quickly, or use the 'emergency dive' to take care of it, and therefore don't see it to be much of a big deal? Or are you mentally burdened in battle and like the fire extinguisher safety system?

Equipment ALSO doesn't tend to help concretely like in an RPG because I found that this is a game that really focuses in on statistics. E.g., you end up min-maxing the _regions_ of the plane best adapted to armor and ignoring the rest. Not because you don't need to, but because _on the margin_ you don't need to. Likewise for flak vests. You give them to gunners and almost nobody else. Not because they don't need it either, but because _on the margin_ they need it a lot more.

There's a lot of 'consequences of consequences' that happens. E.g., you forget to upgrade the hydraulics, so that ends up failing in battle, so you have to repair it while you can't shoot, so a lot of men go under so you run out of first aid kits so when the next wave hits you're barely prepared. BY THAT LATE IN THE BATTLE YOU FORGET THE ORIGINAL CAUSE. You often end up upgrading things that are completely unnecessary and it's difficult to notice that. I've found it interesting to dissect "What the fuck happened there" after the fact because of this.

There's a lot of 'synergistic' effects. This is like the previous point, but in a positive spiral. And likewise, it's REALLY hard to see that thing are suddenly getting way easier because your pilot can do a corkscrew and those extra few seconds of leeway have been enough. But when you can sit down and analyze what you're doing and realize that that's what's happening, it's amazing.

This is a game that feels like it really drives home the importance of the little details. One mission I forgot to put thermal gloves on the radio operator and she went down before all the others. I wasn't expecting it and because I didn't catch that, I couldn't auto-tag, and because I couldn't auto-tag–etc.. But if you're sitting on the stat screen you think, "Who cares about 5 more thermal points?" Likewise, you go from the standard fuselage I to armored fuselage I and think, "This isn't even an upgrade from I to II, it's so minimal, who cares?" But then you start to see that just that extra 1 minute that your gunner didn't have to rest and heal up was enough to fucking save the day. I think this "Three seconds is all it takes between life and death" is the most amazing thing that the game is able to convey that it feels like NO other game I've played has been able to convey.

Also, the music is very fitting. The theme when you come back home safe and sound with your crew after so many close calls just makes you feel like you accomplished something great and are a goddam hero, every single time.

And now the bad.

The tagging system is fucky. Even if you throw the mouse sensitivity ALL the way down (or all the way up, for that matter!), it doesn't do anything. You have to make the SLIGHTEST mouse movements. You get used to it after a couple hours, but I wouldn't be surprised if this was a factor that made people stop playing. Also, sometimes the mission lengths can really drag.

But there have been three things that have peppered my experience. In order of severity"

First, is that when I started playing I did NOT understand how 'cold' works. Imagine a game where you have an 'air' mechanic, typically when swimming (Tomb Raider or Metal Gear Solid). If there's an HP bar and an oxygen bar then if the oxygen bar runs out, THEN the HP bar starts to deplete. So you'd expect that if you had a separate oxygen or cold meter that THAT wouldn't kill you when it fills up because why have the HP meter still full? SOMETIMES I've seen them shared, but it's always something like "part of the HP bar is blinking." MOST UI I've seen that wants to indicate to the user "THIS WILL KILL YOU" will INSTEAD create a hard countdown timer that pops up. Now imagine a game where there's something ELSE using the HP bar. For example, your available HP is colored green, and then another bar in yellow starts to slowly fill it up. EVERY time I've seen this UI interface, it means, "When this fills up you'll go unconscious until conditions improve," it has NEVER meant you die. So, that was what I was expecting, and then ALL my crew froze and died, and I ragequit without taking the loss. I felt doubly bad about that. One because "That's bullshit UI, that's not my fault" and second because "I should've taken the loss."

Second, I was trying to decide what to have for secondary skills, and so I made the mistake of reading online for suggestions. I read someone saying, "Don't bother with survival equipment because character skills are MUCH better than equipment upgrades. Not that that matters in the end. Man, I wish the ending hadn't been spoiled for me," and that's pretty much fucking enough for me to guess what happened. Well, I still have to play through to see, but I fear that I know the ending now and I wish I hadn't chanced upon that ONE comment.

Third, to make up for my ragequit, I wanted to play so that if I lost men or the plane, I'd stick through with it. Well, it finally happened and I just did lose almost all my crew except two. Let me say it's absolutely devasting when you lose all the best members of your crew. It's devastating in A LOT of ways:

1 - Your crew's skills are arguably more important than kit or aircraft upgrades. And when they die you start from SQUARE ONE AGAIN. It's a HUGE setback and is compounded by the fact that each mission can take nearly 20 minutes to complete AND by the fact that if it happens later in the game, good luck picking up the easier missions again!
2 - Because crew skills are so important, you start to really bond with your crew. I had started to give my crew nicknames, had one with the quirky hat, that kind of dumb, childish, anthropomorphization. So, there's this odd kind of hurt that "they died." Like playing Nuzlocke.
3 - So, you'd play like this because you "want to keep the stakes real" right? Like the reason you'd play this way is so that when you get back to base you feel like you've "earned it." But the problem is that once you've lost your crew once, you stop becoming emotionally invested in them because "They're just cannon fodder that I've going to replace if they die anyways." The only "investment" is "Oh man, I hope I don't have to grind up their skill points again!" So, ironically, this does NOT keep the stakes 'real.' If anything, it just dehumanizes them even more and makes the game completely soulless. Whoever fucking suggested to me that the game "should be played this way" didn't know shit.

Now I don't want to play AT ALL ANYMORE because I have no connection to this new replacement crew and…well, the three points I just listed. I kind of feel like maybe I _should_ have kept quitting out and save scumming to avoid crew death because at least I'd still want to play the game.

I don't know how to rate this game now, because I really don't want to finish it anymore. Usually that's my indication for a game having failed. Anyone got any advice for that kind of burnout?

I started 2 games at the same time.
First is Demon's Souls, finally got a PC decent enough for PS3 emulation. The game feels the closes to Dark Souls 1 than the other 2 DS, I can't believe people though it needed a remake. I cleared the first world today and got my ass handed to me multiple times by the Flamelurker, but I pulled through. I'd say this game is harder than DS1 for a single reason: There are no checkpoints before each boss, so dying at a boss and having to go all the way there can be a pain in the ass, the way to solve it is getting good and not dying, though. I prefer the big interconnected map from DS1, but the levels are nice enough, from what I've seen.

Second is Yakuza 6. First thing I gotta say is this game is beautiful, looking at the environments of the Hiroshima town is great, combat is not that different from 5, but I hate having to hold the button to run, this isn't the kinda game you just walk around, I think. It's pretty heavy on the plot, and it really feels like a last game, I know there's a latter game but it has different characters I believe. Also it's really funny how Kiryu gets constantly called an old man or a grandpa but doesn't look a day older than in Yakuza 1.

I’ve been going for S rank on every mission in MMZ, I’ve played through this probably 4~ times but the controls are just so good, there’s nothing more satisfying than dashing and jumping in the air with a rolling slash to slice a bunch of enemies in half.I can speed through every level in maybe 2-3 minutes but since I’m going for S I’m spending a bit longer. If you complete seven missions in a row with an S rank then you unlock ultimate mode which sounds fun.

For a free game OMFG is really fun. The movement is slick, the random guns are the variety to keep things interesting, and it's well optimized so it works great even when in the thick of it.
Only negative I have to say are bot it could use more room types and the hit boxes are ever so slightly off so precision shots from really far away sometimes miss when you would expect them to hit.

It's free so I highly recommend picking it up. It is pretty fun for a few hours.

Been playing dwarf fortress. Spent a couple hours running numbers and planning out the stones I will embark with to make certain metal things. I think I'll go super deep with planning in the future.
Here are my metal plans:

To produce
a. 20 sets of bronze armor (helm, breastplate, 2 chainmail, leggings, greaves, gauntlets, highboots - not even the full uniform, also adding leather cloaks and hoods + wood shield)
b. 10 silverwarhammers + 20 lead bars worth of crafts
c. 10 bronze battlaxes
d. 5 bronze picks
e. 1400 cooper and silver bolts

Materials needed
a. 47 lignite, 28 tetrahedrite, 28 cassiterite
b. 7(+1) lignite, 5(+2) galena, buffer for random chance of silver
c. 4 lignite, 3 tetrahedrite, 3 cassiterite
d. 2 lignite, 2 tetrahedrite, 2 cassiterite
e. 7 lignite, 14 tetrahedrite

Total: 67 lignite, 7 galena, 47 tetrahedrite, 33 cassiterite.

Now I can actually start playing. I am undecided on weather I will focus the fort on a tavern or on a library.

It's alright and because is melee focused it helps discurage the things I hate most about BR games, so it's a BR I am actually having fun with, plus it has a deathmatch mode which is also really fun. All that said the hyper aggressive monetization seems more like that of a free to play game, which makes the buy to play price tag make no fucking sense at all.
I will not be buying the game, so unless they go fully F2P after times up I will just delete it. I am not paying $20 bucks only for everything to be locked behind paywalls and loot boxes.
I am also sure the population will fall to almost nothing once the event is over.

I've been having a great time. It just feels so good to see all the common staples. Also, I'm surprised not only how the graphics stand up, but how…it almost feels like they're _better_ than "modern" games?

I can see why it's divisive, since it's an FF game that's not 'turn-based.' However, once the gambit system showed up, I fucking loved it. One of the things I had been dreading about this game, one of the reasons I stopped playing JRPGs, and one of the lingering doubts I had in the back of my mind was THE GRIND. Fortunately, the gambit system completely takes off the grind. You can freaking program your party to auto battle. Not only does this take off the grind, but your mind goes into this higher level strategizing. I think I'm mid-game at the moment, however, and I've reached a stage where I don't know what more I can do with it. I'm sure someone has got to have come up with some cool gamebreaking gambit setups, but so far I have a lot of basic, "KEEP REGEN AND PROTECT UP AND ATTACK PLOX."

Another doubt I had in the back of my mind was "SECRET AREA YOU CAN ONLY ENTER ONCE AND IF YOU DON'T GET THE SUPER POWERFUL THING YOU'RE FUCKED" or "CAREFUL NOT TO SOFTLOCK YOURSELF IN A STUPID POWERFUL AREA." Fortunately, not only have I not encountered the former, but as for the latter there's a lovely little, "Hey, use a different save file" message that appears that really increased my confidence in this game. Now that I'm confident, I've been going through without a guide, so I don't know how far I'm in, but I feel I should warn anyone else that you can play this game without a guide, and to not be worried about fucking yourself over for not getting some stupid secret. It's not like other RPGs in that regard. Also it's been well-designed against the other trope of "CAREFUL YOU DON'T TALK TO THE SUPER SPECIAL NPC THAT ADVANCES THE PLOT AND FUCKS YOU OVER FROM EXPLORING THE REST OF THE AREA." Usually there's someone who says, "Talk to Elder chief…" and then a little tooltip that tells you who that is so you can avoid accidentally triggering cutscenes that you might not want to yet.

Also, so far I've actually really been liking the characters. Vaan hasn't been this incredibly grating Shinji character. Everyone has this attitude of "better to be silent and have people think you're stupid than to speak up and remove all doubt" (for the most part) that's been rather refreshing. Sure, sometimes someone does something stupid, but it's _understandably_ stupid. It's not like some other RPGs where a character does something cartoonishly idiotic for what you can see is a paper-thin motive of merely advancing the plot or being some kind of irritating kid character. There also aren't any–so far–"Mary Sue"/"The Chosen One" characters (maybe the princess…but we'll see.
I should maybe bide my tongue on that one). Everyone has their role, and don't seem overpowered. I really like Fran, too. If I ever hear the "THERE ARE NO POWERFUL WOMYN IN VIDEOGAMES" trope again, she'll be who I think of. At the same time, Vaan/Penelo keep things at a level where it isn't like a Heinlein novel where all the characters are purse-lipped know-it-all super-mature bores (sorry to all 12 fans of the "Stranger in a Strange Land").

Plot-wise things feel fairly…standard. It seems all too surface-level geopolitical. I know this is FF, though, so in the back of my mind I'm thinking, "Alright, when are things going to go batshit "I'LL CONTROL THE MULTIVERSE AND DEFY GOD TO BECOME A GOD MYSELF!" anime on everything?

Two issues I've been having:

1 - Gil

It's weird because I have license points out the yinyan, but the sticking point for me is having enough dosh to actually use what my characters are learning. If anyone has played this before and has some good tips for gil farming on the quick, I'd appreciate it. I'm always really short on it. I haven't been using items (except for some of the hunts) because of it.

Just to give an idea of how ridiculous this is, I realized that I get money faster by farming wolf pelts, a level 1 creature, than in the current mid-20 level areas I'm in atm. I found this bridge in Bhujerba that I can farm skeleton bones, but please I want to avoid THE GRIND as much as possible.

2 - MP

Mid-dungeon I'll have to stop and run in a circle for probably a solid 3 minutes to regain MP to continue. It's kind of aggravating. Maybe it's my magic heavy playstyle, but there's got to be some way to get MP back faster or something, right?

Every situation in DS2 is manageable if you're methodical enough, DS3 has tons of bullshit enemies that are relentless and will stunlock you to death if you let them hit you first, or do some unavoidable grab attack out of nowhere. It's like they were designed for Bloodborne but put in a Souls game where they don't really belong, and while DS3 is faster than its predecessors, it's not quite as fast as Bloodborne so it stands out as poor design.
Some mini bosses are more annoying than actual bosses, remember these giant dog-rat hybrid creatures? Or the four-legged ice monsters? Hell even some of the common dogs are a pain in the ass to deal with, and they can teleport too!
One last thing that comes to mind is the unviable nature of the slowest weapons against most bosses. In many situations it's a lot more effective to switch to a faster, lighter weapon because good luck hitting the hyperactive bosses and dodging reliably with a great hammer or sword.

Great game, and I do like it a lot, but there are some baffling design decisions, and the "artificial difficulty" meme has some truth to it.

I am playing Skyrim VR with some mods. It's pretty fantastic. I don't remember anything about this game from the first time I played it. I was gonna go for a heavy armor one-handed + shield build, but archery has proven to be more fun and effective so I just switch to shield and sword if a guy gets too close. Honestly it seems like I do more damage with the bow even at close range though. Maybe I should switch to light armor so I can sneak better because sneaky archery is OP as fuck. I suspect part of my issues with the one-handed has been that I keep accidentally equipping shitty armors when I mean to just pick them up. I am picking up and selling as much armor as I can so that I can buy materials to smith armor. I just got to level 30 in smithing and went for the next grade of heavy armor which I think was dwarvish but I could probably switch to light armor without too much hassle.

This game is really a lot more fun in VR. Being in the dungeons is spooky and everything is just more fun. Casting magic is super cool and so is archery. Only thing that kind of sucks is melee because your weapon has no weight so you can just kind of flail around like crazy. Trying to block with the shield at the right time is the only thing that redeems it.

As far as roleplaying goes, at first I was mad that the empire tried to kill me and I was gonna join up with the stormcloaks to try and get revenge, but my head has since cooled a little and I'm fine just making my way in the world doing odd jobs for people. I don't really want to get killed fighting the empire and I doubt these hillbillies could pull it off. I mean their top dude was already captured and about to be executed before a freak dragon attack saved his life. That does not bode well for success. I think I might try doing some vampire hunting next. That at least sounds like an admirable way to help the common folk more than bringing war to them would.

You would think carry weight limits would bother me more in fallout like they do in elder scrolls, but they don't.
It just makes things more emersive in a kind of unrealistic way, especial in hardcore mode, of having to make hard choices when scavaging and remembering where stuff is to loot it later. Plus something about it scratches a itch in my mind when I complete a run with a few trustworthy items, loot out the best stuff, then make my way back to house or whatever to sort through the loot of what I will keep and what I will sell off.
You would think I would also be into looter shooters for similar reasons but I just haven't really gotten in to any of them.

Anyway most smaller mods are as easy as putting prepacked things in the data folder.

When you game over in this game, you lose FUCKING EVERYTHING. At that level, it is EASIER to start a new game. I'm playing SMT Strange Journey (the original DS version) and I'm stuck on stage 2 of ouroboros. Never played this series before and I haven't played a turn based jrpg since pokemon when I was a child. I only decided to play it because I love the aesthetic of the demonica suit, it's really clean and cool, and all the sick ass demons were a nice surprise. The actual gameplay is passable, not really fun, especially when you're getting bullshit rng cheesed by a boss that puts random status effects on your entire party every other turn and deals insane damage on the other. I was forced to go back and read threads and grind and fuse demons with better skills and I still can't beat it. Then you get the mandatory smug comment about how easy it was for this other individual, thanks bro, during the process I simply realised this isn't fun - I'm only playing for the setting and atmosphere, the scenario of an elite task force of mook soldiers fighting spooky demons in a multileveled hellscape is especially pleasing to me but is unfortunately wasted on an archaic turn based dungeon crawler, it shifts from slow and monotonous for the majority of engagements to frustrating and masochistic during boss battles. I could think more about my party setup and try to minmax stuff but what's the point when this style of dated gameplay simply doesn't appeal to me, even walking around the map is a chore getting hit by useless encounters I have to button mash away from only to walk into some status effect tile that makes me waste even more time. Recent entries in series like persona aren't much better, everything looks appealing except for the combat, so what's the point, I'd be better served reading a visual novel. At least pokemon is finally experimenting with something real time even if it looks crappy. For the record I don't think all turn based games are bad, one of my favourite games is xcom and I've liked games like slay the spire and darkest dungeon, but the old school here's my party vs your party setup in most jrpgs feels especially limited and rote. Not sure if I'll continue or just drop it and watch the rest of the story on youtube.

I'm really enjoying the campaign of this game, I wanted to play something that felt like Warcraft 3 and this is just right. I don't know the first thing about WH40k but it kinda got me interested and watched a couple of lore videos on youtube, and I'm started to understand why people get so into this stuff. 40k is honestly way simpler than people let on. Humans just go PRAISE THE EMPEROR, orkz are DA GREEN AND MEAN, etc etc. the factions all have basic but fun personalities. The lorefagging comes from all the short stories and accumulated characters and their interactions. The overall gist is very palatable and simple though.

It's not really a matter of sucking or not, the combat in these games is dating and boring. Games being primarily turn based was a handicap of technology at the time, now we're past that there's no reason for games like this to stay so rudimentary. There's very little skill involved and when it is difficult in the few boss battles it is it's not in a challenging or enjoyable way. It seems a common consensus that people play these games for everything BUT the combat which says it all really.

It's constantly in your face the moment you look at any of the content outside of the main story. Some of it was side content in the main story but putting it front and center in the "post game" content is really off putting. IOI are already more Jewy than almost every other company out there and now it's premium poz being shoved down your throat.

All I want is a sandbox where I get to sneak around and murder people in novel ways. Instead I get pozzed up shit where hitting someone in the back of the head with a medieval mace isn't fatal but hitting them with a newspaper knocks them unconscious.. They have released the exact same game 3 times with minor UI improvements and camera adjustments a simple patch could have fixed. And despite this, everything blunt is non-lethal and everything sharp is lethal. It wouldn't be so bad if it was priced fairly but Hitman 3 on steam with all the content was $170s at release. While Epic had says on Hitman 3 alone. Meaning IOI are so jewy they kept hitman 1 and 2 at full price on steam years after release just so they could try and jew you out of more money if you wanted the full hitman 3 experience on steam.

Honestly once you have an income, it’s real easy to fall for. Less so with games that have a set amount of DLC and you can compare the base version with the “full” version. But games with micro transactions and skins it’s easy to start justifying “eh it’s just five dollars for this skin” because that’s the cost of like two sodas and a pack of gum. I’ll admit I’ve fallen for it. God help those gacha whales though.

I don’t like any game having an in game store, the practice is always predatory and it being free isn’t an excuse. Supporting the company is a bad argument too because buying the game should be what supports it, not ancillary stuff like skins and emotes. The monetization of these things is why few multiplayer games releasing today have mod support, same with MMOs and like you just explained, even single player games that require a server connection.

If they want to make a game free to play, so people will try it, fine. Just make the full deal require a purchase and monetization is solved. I feel like TF2 figured this all out years ago with premium accounts, even item trading while still having a very active community that makes mods and custom servers. But now you have to pay for shit like sprays in CS:GO and overwatch.

Playing the max difficulty and it's decently challenging, you can still completely destroy stuff but you have to play correctly with enough depth to be fun to work on but not insanely complex to the point I get put off. I am hoping the SAS abilities get a little more varied as they level up, they are fun but several feel samey.

I also picked up elden ring on PC. Framerate is locked 60, I have a beefy pc and am fine on 4k but I think even a 1080 should be able to handle 1440p (maybe some adjusted settings). I haven't experienced any crashes or stutter personally, but there is some pretty inexcusable slowdown when you transition in certain parts of the overworld. Since the game itself has been really good and doesn't happen very often, it's not dealbreaking. It only was really a problem for gameplay around the tree sentinel. If you have a choice I might go for console, but hopefully they'll patch things.

It's so much better to be able to just work on a boss right after you die, you basically can't lose your runes and it makes focusing on learning patterns much easier.

So far I have only seen one (very short and easy) boss run in the mine area around where you fight agheel.

BUT, seeing that you're level 26, I would recommend keep going just a bit further to 30. Around there you'll have a quest line that they obviously poured a huge amount of their budget into. The quality suddenly goes way up and is comparable to an AAA title. They specifically feature this section of the game in most of their trailers. But yeah, if you're still not into Lost Arc after level 30 then just drop it.

I almost never vibe with big open world games, but I'm feeling the same way. The overall layout of the open world stuff is what really sells the discovery feeling, everything feels pretty uniquely laid out and not just copy pasted open world events. Obviously some things like the mini dungeons have similarities but they feel individually designed and there's plenty of completely unique world encounters too.

Also the out there creature/enviornment design is one of their strong suits, which really adds to the feeling since you have no clue what you might encounter next.

Tried out the endless mode and found it super dull since once you get to level 10 or so you can perks that make it nearly imposible for you to die with the easy mobs they throw at you. You shouldn't have much trouble actually running it if you have relatively new hardware. In terms of regular fps loss it's pretty minimal compared to console. For me there are a few dips to the 50's in certain open areas but that's at 4k max.

I think consoles have more innate issues keeping up rendering. The pc issues are primarily caused by live shader caching and memory streaming, so the longer you play the less problems you'll actually see.

When you first walk out into the open world it will be pretty bad for a minute, and some big attacks with a lot of effects may stutter the first time and so on. 30+ hours in it's generally only when switching areas on foot that I have some slowdown, and some other random times but they're far and in between.

There are a lot of situations that are unbeatable bullshit if you don't play optimally.

Some days ago, my older brother and his two children came to visit and one of them downloaded a little game on my PC. He told me that it was a Mega Man game where you play as Kirby, so I thought it would be some sort of ROM hack where you could fry and absorb enemies, just like any other Kirby game. However, the game turned out to be a regular Mega Man fan game with characters inspired by the Kirby franchise.
I decided to give it a try and, after a few days, I finished it. To be honest, it's a pretty good Mega Man clone that takes inspirations from many of those NES games, so if you enjoy classic Mega Man, you'll probably like this game. Also, it's kind of challenging. In fact, unlike the original Mega Man games, some extra enemies are added to the levels once you defeat one of the main bosses. On the other hand, a few of these enemies can be pretty annoying, especially those who can block your shots.
That said, I can't deny that there's something about this game that reminds me of early DeviantArt. I guess it's the fact that all the characters are just wacky/edgy Kirby "recolors". There's even a character than looks like a hybrid between Kirby, Shadow The Hedgehog and Dante from Devil May Cry. In a way, the whole thing is charming.
Now I'm playing the "endless journey" mode, where you play through stages randomly selected. Unfortunately, after clearing more than 100 stages, you have to fight a secret boss (the edgy Kirby I mentioned previously) and he's just too hard for me. Here's a gameplay where you guys can see that stupid boss in action:

done with Metal Max 2 remake on DS. good game but what's with that crazy encounter rate against trash mobs that are mostly harmless? how about having fewer fights, but making them more engaging. Takes a long time for me, forever to figure out how to get the dress for cloud at wall market. Been playing on a few brews and shots so that didn't help. It's hard so I started using a walkthrough for ease and now I'm progressing along nicely. Right now I'm stuck on the doctor boss at floor 70. I can get a stick to get the next two installments too, fugging legendary $50 console out of Sony. Definite must buy for retro game fans. Game is slow and dialogue filled, I think it's kind of entertaining. You fight and break into buildings and shit. Graphics remind me of Diablo but harder, cutscenes battle sequences are smooth and satisfying, puzzle solving in the 32bit is never ludicrous in difficulty and fun. Must play outta ten. $50 Amazon!

I tried that game. I tried the top left boss first. It's quite a boring game. I didn't get past the boss and didn't bother to continue when I lost all of my lives that I didn't know I had. I at least liked the alternative route with the gordos.

It's much more simplistic than fan other games abd there really wasn't enough action to keep it entertaining. I like Mario fan games well enough, like the toadette fangame, and that's simple, but I guess Megaman games just aren't my cup of tea.

Playing this before going to bed. I'm surprised my 6yo second-hand phone can run this at all, so I'm pretty happy with just that. If you've been playing Pokemon games for decades this is a pretty interest title to spend some time on, there are a lot of characters from the olden pokedays here and the idea of pair syncs and the way the battles work are pretty entertaining. There's also the gatcha and collecting part which I always enjoy in gaming in general. Only downside is that you need a phone.

Finally started playing witcher 3.
Honistly not all that impressed.
Sure it's pretty and all but the actual combat isn't very good.
After getting my ass handed to my over and over again trying to be fancy (I kinda cranked the difficulty a bit high) only to find out that the optimal stratagy for everything is to tap the light attack button repeatedly and occationally dive roll out the way of stuff flinging it's self at you.
Combos, going from light to heavy attacks, using heavy attacks at all in most cases, using a spell mid combo, trying to block with perfict timing or use the step dodge button, all of it sub optimal that will just get you killed. At least at low level with high difficulty.
Just keep button mashing that light attack button until everything's dead and dive roll for defense. Maybe throw in a spell or two to disrupt enemy attack patterns.

Again, everything looks really cool, and the story seems interesting so far, but I am shocked at how meh the gameplay is so far for such a well regarded game.

Also the glitches keep taking me out of the atmosphere that the game tries so hard to build. They are for some reason more detracting then usual for a open world game despite nothing being game breaking.

I will also note it took me 6 hours to clear the first tutorial bit so I know I am probably in for a long one with this game.
Maybe as I progress and upgrade the combat and game play open up.
Or maybe I just learn to turn my brain off for the game parts of the game and just enjoy the story bits.

I’m playing hexen beyond heretic, this game is so tedious, so far I have been going through it without writing anything down but the mental load of remembering so many things is exhausting, I just made it to the 3rd hub which is some sort of castle, I’m collecting different colored gems and I have no idea why but they seems important. There is actually a lever I pulled in a secret area of hub 2 that opens a room in the 4th hub which is so obtuse Id never know what it did if I didn’t look it up. The game is not technically hard but you will just spend every minute of it bashing your head on a wall wondering what the hell am I supposed to be doing. Despite the annoying obtuse puzzles I’m having fun, this game has managed to suck about 6 hours out of me so far so if I play to the end it’ll probably be another 6 more. But I’m not sure if I’ll finish it, I have to do something on the third hub to unlock another zone area and I have no idea what, will probably have to walk around the zone I cleared out already to try and find a hidden switch… *sigh*

Dropped Metal Max 3, it is inferior in every way to the remake of 2, which was released a year later. The encounter rate is among the worst I have ever seen, like, sometimes you can't even take a couple steps without triggering a random fight. This is unacceptable and makes one wonder if anyone actually played this shit before shipping it. Mind-bogglingly there is a late game dungeon with enemies roaming around the levels, why only there and not everywhere else?

I can't begin to imagine how horrendous this must be on original hardware, with no speed up function, and no save state. There is a cheat that supposedly disables random encounters but I could not be arsed setting it up on the emulator.

Still despite all of its flaws I had fun and sunk dozens of hours into it but I would not recommend it to anyone. The main story is shit and I'm overleveled so it's pointless attempting to overcome my frustration for the sake of getting it over with. Waste of potential.

Played and probably dropped the new Kirby And The Forgotten Land, before it even released.

First off I'm thankful for this new environment of game piracy in which hackers are able to physically sneak behind the curtains of Nintendo events, plug in their modded switches, and download unrestricted full games before they release. It's oldschool spy / hitman stuff, like these hackers have full costumes and everything to breach the security and they jack in to the central machine to download private files that they then release to the public.

The game is another "nutendo" adventure, in that it has no challenge, consequences, deep story, exhilarating scenes, or substantial co-op and online gameplay. In the case of this game, the platforming is slow and sluggish, there's no momentum carryover when jumping or attacking, there's more health pickups than enemies, which powerups are needed to access secrets are placed right in front, there's no thinking ahead or backtracking for which powerups to have because they're all there at all times, and dying is an immediate return to where you fell. The 2D Kirby games had challenge, the move to 2.5D on the N64 brought a lot of character and huge moveset, but since Nintendo began trying to replicate the 2D gameplay with 3D graphics, they've pulled nothing good from either type and what we're getting are these slow and easy games with the same moves, map styles, and graphics. I thought this one would be different and more open with multiple routes and crazy powers opening up new gameplay styles, but it's really not.

It's not at all an open world or multi-route adventure like the trailers alluded to, and 100% of what the first trailers show was condensed in to the first area, and yet beyond that there's nothing new. Graphics are alright but the world is very static. There's no breaking through rubble or overturning cars for bonuses except where it's very obviously marked. While the progression is completely linear, maps are disconnected by flying around in the overworld so there isn't even the cool visual spectacle of seeing where you came from and where you're going to while in the maps, with the exception being some tall-standing landmarks that are shared between the courses but in seemingly random directions.

Music is also not up to the usual Kirby groove. Other games with fast controls and tough combat had appropriate action music to suit, but this game has neither those scenes nor relaxing loneliness, so the music just blends together and is quite forgettable. Old tracks present in all installments make a return but with no added twist to compliment the change to 3D movement.

Attacks can be upgraded but not combined, though it's a grind to get them all and frankly even a single upgrade can give you an OP attack that can get you through any level or boss, until you're forced to dispose of it for some scripted event. There's also a Gatcha machine to collect SSMB-style trophies, but rather than acting as a retrospective on the Kirby series it's just a random assortment of props from this game such as vending machines and bosses.

If you liked the last couple Kirby games you'll like this for the same reasons, but if you've come to expect more from the Kirby series after all the years and were hyped about potential changes, then you'll be let down. Grab it for free if you have a cracked system to see some cool environments not found in any Kirby game yet, but it's certainly not worth a full game's pricetag especially when considering the lack of replayability and multiplayer.

the music really does suck bad, but complaining that a kirby game isn't challenging is sorta funny. My biggest issue with the game was depth perception issues but my eyes might just be retarded. The biggest part of every kirby game for me is the outfits though, I really liked the classic ones and also seeing the new upgraded ones, in my opinion playing dress up and fighting easy enemies was always the main appeal, it's cute, and fun, it's kirby

It's way too hard. Did some side quest in a mine with spiders only to spend 3 hours getting one shot in by the boss over and over again.
Broke both swords, used all items, spend a half hour beating on the thing, only got it down by a third of health, then messed up a dodge once and had to start all over again. It isn't hard as in challenging, its hard as in broken and unbeatable. Can't even run away since the auto saves put me right into the boss fight. So I would have to start the game all over again just to avoid a fight I can't possibly beat. It isn't even about getting good. I can't do damage. The steel sword does 1 damage, the silver sword does 10 then breaks and does 5 damage on a critical hit. The thing has like 10,000 hp. I get hit once and it's game over.
It's fucking bullshit.
Fuck this game, I have no clue why people like it.

If the game is going to be cheap then I will be cheap right back.

My level was 2.
From what I saw there was no indication of this when I accepted the quest.

I have someone irl urdging me to play more of the game for the story and now that the game has made a fool of me I have a grudge that can only be satisfied by making the game my bitch.
So I will keep playing out of spite.

I'm playing a game called Kenshi. It's a hard game about exploring the world, making your way, coming into power, stealing, killing, etc. Basically a game about living in this post-apocalyptic world with swords. I've been in between making a killing and starving and starving for money. I mine copper for a living and sell what I mine to whoever wants to buy it in the city. Some places have it cheaper, others more expensive. I go from my home town across the desert to another town to go mine and sell copper so I can go back to my town to build my tech and buy stuff. I've tried setting up my own town, but bandits prove to be too hard. Mercenaries are quite expensive too - 6,000 cats for a bodyguard or 2,000 cats for two days to protect my outpost and 1,000 per day after. Also they get looting rights. For reference, one copper is 150 cats and costs maybe an hour and 30 minutes of the day or 20-27 seconds to mine in real time. I don't have fatigue, but it's super expensive to hire. I've actually decided to just buy a cheap house at my home town and repair them because it's safer. Also houses here are about 4,000 cats for the medium sized ones. Sadly though, my town doesn't have other opportunities like access to farm products that I could turn into bread or other products for profit. It's becoming more apparent that the town I travel to will be a better place. However, at 7,500 cats for a house starting, it's a very big investment. In the meantime, I have another person I hired to help mine and fight. She was weaker than me, but I got her beat up a few times to increase her toughness. She's still very weak and bad at mining. I guess I'll just have to mine, establish a base, and start setting up the necessary tools to grind wheat into flour, make it into bread, get the knowledge to make booze, etc. I'll have close access to these resources with multiple sellers to bring some different income sources.

On the training part, my hireling, Meow, needs a lot more training before becoming competent as a fighter. Her strength, toughness, and other stats are abysmal. For a guard, strength is around 50, toughness maybe 30, dexterity, no idea. Her strength is something like 1, toughness 22 or 23, and dexterity 4. She can't hit well, can't defend well, and crumbles. She needs better armor and weapons as I do. It'll be a challenge actually training both of us since bandits will enslave or kill you unless they're part of a faction called "starving bandits". They just want food. I might end up looking on the wiki about training because it seems the training dummies don't do well. The advanced dummy gets some attributes to 10, but to get the dummy, you need to research a few things to unlock this technology and each research costs more and more books. Books are about 350 cats per where I'm at, so three copper, 60 seconds of mining, 4 hours and 30 minutes of mining I assume. Maybe less considering I'm becoming a better miner all the time.

Finally, on this game, I lag hard. I really need better hardware for this game. I'm also super interested in playing it, so I'm tempted. The constant loading is a problem and when loading, it'll stop for a minute or two before continuing traveling. I assume it's poorly optimized or the amount of stuff to render, mountains, ores, trees, random NPCs on the road, towns, etc. causes a lot of strain.

so far i'm loving it, atmosphere and sfx are genuinely unnerving at times. to add to this there are subtle details added to it that weren't in the original PSX version like footsteps and ambient sounds coming from objects like computers that make it probably the best way to play this incarnation of Doom.

I've been playing Oblivion on and off for two years now technically. I took a year off and continued from my save game a few months ago. I find it really hard to play this game. I feel bored and trapped in my character and all characters because I've met my "cap" for my power level. Even if I increase my combat or stealth skills, I will never become any stronger or competent than I am now. All enemies will continue scaling their health to my level if I hadn't modded it out yet (can't remember). I think I actually did mod it. Still, my methods of combat will never change because I've reached the cap for the best way to kill. All other ways would be tedious and not worth my time. I can only complete the quests now and finish the game, and I have two more guilds, the main quest, and the Sheogorath DLC to complete. Then I'll be free of this game. To be succinct, I feel like my wheels are turning in mud because no matter how much I improve in other ways, it won't matter how I play. Combat is boring and I've ascended past it with a large pool of mana and a bunch of overpowered spells. I don't need to fight, it's boring, and it just wastes my time. I can summon liches to sell their staves for money if needed. No more need to go in dungeons either because I have all the best leveled gear. It's time for me to beat the game. Afterwards, maybe I'll replay it modded even heavier to be more like Morrowind. Then maybe I'll like it more, but I could just still play Morrowind of Daggerfall if I wanted. There's not much to play for anyways after the quests. I've played the guild quests multiple times anyways. We'll see.

On that note, I was super bummed when I found out Bloodborne doesn't have a pc port, would've loved to have tried that next. Maybe it's time to save for ps5 if there's gonna be more awesome ps exlusives.

I think I briefly played this over ten years ago. I remember not liking it because there were all these black towers you have to go into with all these demons and I found them extremely boring and repetitive. I don't remember anything else than that. I don't think I got very far. I just got the game for free though on epic's free game thing. Do you think it's worth playing? How does it stack up to Morrowind and Skyrim?

I never had the patience to beat SMT 1, 2 or If. Also tried Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei several times but always gave up. Also dropped Strange Journey and Persona 1+2.

Yes, the only SMT games I beat were Devil Survivor 1 and 2 for me too. I think it is because there is no shitty dungeon crawling in them. The random encounter rate and how annoying they were always took away my joy in the case of most SMT games.

Anyway these games are HIGHLY overrated. They re-use the same demons and plot elements numerous times in different games, if you played/experienced one SMT game you know them all.

I've had many good memories with the game. I remember having lots of fun with the guild quests the first time and I still think the atmosphere is great. One of my favorite memories was when I decided to rest near a tower that sat on a hill above the imperial city. I could see the city in the distance while my character was having his dinner. The sun was setting and the day was pretty much over. Oblivion can be a fun game if you mod it or know how to do fun things in between the training you'll do to not get behind. The game is much more fun in the early game when you're weak and have so much to learn. You're training constantly and in between that training, you'll decide to do some quests to show yourself how much you've grown. It's just that at my level and skills, I don't have anything left to train for. I'm all business now, no more play.

In terms of systems though, it's the worst game of the series. Since everything levels with you and the leveling system is so bad, you'll need to efficiently train so enemies don't outgrow you. Their health increases with your level like your health increases with your level tied to your endurance stat. You'll need to level that first or mod it so enemies stay stagnant. Otherwise, enemies like goblins will have over 1,000 health when you're level 30. A regular daedric claymore, the highest grade of sword and the hardest hitting sword, has a base damage of 26. It'll probably hit something like 50 with maximum strength and skill in swords. Enemies are damage sponges. You could enchant the sword for 30 fire, ice, and electric elemental damage, but it doesn't stop the huge inconvenience combat would be. Not to mention that if you're a mage and you haven't been efficiently leveling, you will not want to level any further to keep their health pools from rising. Or if you're a mage like me, you already have spells that do 300 damage, so there's no need to bother. That's where I am. Compared to Skyrim, combat doesn't scale well, and compared to Morrowind, its leveling system punishes you.

Play it modded like I am. Even more heavily in fact. Either have a mod that efficiently levels you each time so you'll never go past level 30, the max level for item lists, or have a mod where enemies don't level with you. Also mod it so item level lists scale with you.

played persona 4, smt 3 and digital devil saga
i feel they take themselves way too seriously
the 'let's kill god and change fate!' trope is not uncommon in jrpgs but it's usually so cheesy and fantastical that it's not too bad, while smt is kitsch and edgy in the worst ways

the games also have these religious, psychological and metaphysical references that i find very distateful. it's something i cant explain that i have already talked about here…

Yes, there is definitely something in what you said.
My main problem is the gameplay with these games, especially dungeon crawling+high random encounter rate…it gets boring by the time you reach half of the game.

About the atmosphere, I love it but like I said, they overuse certain plot elements/character types through the series. The characters are usually shit, bland, boring stereotypes.
And the alignment system, that is another interesting point of problem I have with these games. So I'm not a christian or religious of any kind but SMT games are WAY TOO BIASED against the Law alignment and they favor Neutral/Chaos routes way too much. Well, okay so Atlus hates utopistic worlds where people help each other and follow laws - this is okay. But! Law in these games means usually "muh evil christianity" and it is just sooo cliché. Notice how Neutral, the alignment these games always praise as the best always has japanese deities in it and such? These games are based on yet again the (injured)nationalistic pride of japanese people, I mean give me a break. Yes, yes, we know you are all xenophobes and hate cultures that are alien to yours, we get it already!

And yes I am familiar with gnosticism but 'killing God (read: YHWH)' again and again…why can't we have other villains? And there is Lucifer and the obligatory dicksucking he receives in every single game…it is again, very cliché.

Yeah, these games have some interesting ideas and elements but they are way too pretentious and like you said, take themselves extremely seriously.
The "power of friendship" shit they introduced starting the Persona series made the whole thing even more ridiculous. The "power of social bonds", the "potential of humanity" and the overused "rebel!" feeling ruin the series heavily. It could be so much better, that is the sad fact.

tl;dr played Dungeon Siege 1 and don't recommend it at all, there are much better games out there, but if you really want to play it for some reason, I'd only play the Legends of Aranna expansion as it's shorter and offers some improvements over the original game

Last game I finished is Dungeon Siege, somewhere at the end of 2021, and it mostly sucks. It's very primitive, linear and repetitive. I don't know why it has such positive ratings. I first learned about the game from a demo which I played back when I was a kid around the time it came out, and back then it seemed interesting.

The game is too easy. I don't even need the game to be very challenging, but it has to offer something interesting, and in my opinion Dungeon Siege offers almost nothing at all: no interesting story, no particularly beautiful and unique locations or atmosphere, no skill trees or any fun mechanics, no interesting quests. Combat is maybe fun for the first hour of the game or so which almost coincides with the demo's length.

If I had to describe the game in a single word I'd say: tedious. Picking up endless loot and selling it, killing endless amount of monsters, using the same combat tactic over and over again. Occupational therapy. You can almost turn your brain off while playing. Might be ok if you're listening to some podcast and want to stimulate yourself somehow mechanically in the meanwhile. Deciding what to equip and what to sell, considering the trade offs of items may be the most engaging part of the game.

I still played through the entire game due to my compulsive completionism in about 60 hours. After I killed the final boss, and it dropped some expensive items the game crashed to desktop, before I could pick anything up. I decided not to go through the boss fight again because there is nothing to do after you kill it anyway and the game is pretty much finished, plus I think it would crash again and I need a patch or something to fix it.

You level your character by the skills you use: e.g. if you fight melee your melee skill increases, if you use combat magic your combat magic skill increases, kinda like in TES 3: Morrowind, but characters only have four skills: melee, ranged, nature magic, combat magic. The higher your magic level the more spells you can use, spells have minimum magic level requirements, but many spells are useless or not worth the time using, e.g. buff spells, spells that deal less damage than lower level spells. You also have three stats: strength, dexterity, intelligence which increase depending on the skills you use, they determine which equipment you can wear as most items has stat requirements.

I haven't learned my lesson and decided to check out the expansion Legends of Aranna, and it's more of the same, but with a few improvements over the original game. I played it for about 7 hours (out of about 20 hours of gameplay) and found myself really bored again and decided to drop the game. To return to the topic of the previous paragraph, all that time I found myself mostly using the first (level 1) spell on my nature mage character as it was the most efficient, convenient one, and I hadn't found anything better.

I might still try out user created mods, see if there is anything worthwhile, anything with considerable improvements, originality or difference over the original game. I might also try to play the second game, but I'll quickly drop it too if it's more of the same.

the gameplay is the least of the games' issues imo. again i havent played many of them, but there are ways to decrease the encounter rate in smt 3, perhaps the other mainline entries and spinoffs are what you have in mind? i can't say it bothers me much, and that auto-battle thing where the game takes care of spamming the "attack" command against trash mobs is pretty convenient.

the less story and interruptions from actually playing the better. at first i was intrigued by digital devil saga and the characters grew on me, but by the second game it went bonkers and i couldnt be arsed keeping up with whatever was going on… ive seen people praise the story but i don't really get it. at least nocturne kept the narrative side to a tolerable level and it was satisfying to see these two arrogant teenage cunts get their comeuppance at your hand. power fantasy done right… if only it wasn't for the grandiloquent occult shit

Fire Emblem Thracia 776. The characters are blabbermouths. I'm tempted to skip the talking altogether but each time I'm afraid I'll miss some important gameplay-related information so I just mash A instead and toggle fast forward on the emulator. And then you get interrupted mid-mission by some villains going "hahaha I'm evil" and the good guys going "oh noes he's evil". The stories in this series are utter shit.

Thracia does feel like it is at least as verbose as the GBA ones and a lot more than 3… I never cared much if at all for the story in any of them honestly. The writing is dull and the less talking there is the better. I don't know about the games released more recently but if they put too much emphasis on plot exposition, dating sim elements and all that, I think that's a pity, unless they significantly stepped their game up but even then this is not what I'm looking for… Thankfully I've still got quite a few of the older ones to play and replay though.

I dunno if we might be referring to different things, when I think of "writing" in these games I'm thinking 100% of the character writing not the story. I barely pay attention to the plot in FE but I always remember the characters I liked. It's that kind of game for me, if that makes sense. Anyway it doesn't matter I guess. My view is definitely skewed that way as well since the FE games I've played the most recently are the newer ones (specifically Fates). I finished the remake of Gaiden/2 on 3DS last month as well which was pretty good but I've never tried the original to compare. With the amount of text and rout maps I imagine it must be pretty slow going on the NES. Actually to your point, regarding the recent games those "dating sim" (it's negligible compared to real dating sims of course) are significantly upped, BUT they do have actual effects on the gameplay so I think it's fine. Although I haven't played Three Houses so it could be going in a crazy direction now for all I know. That said, my biggest issue with the new games isn't that stuff, it's the near constant "rout the enemy" maps… like in the GBA games there's still a lot of rout maps but also a diversity of objectives to keep it interesting, seize and defend and all that. If you get OCD about exp a seize map is basically a rout map anyway, but the illusion of choice is nice at least. I need to play the older ones some more, it's just these type of games seriously take over my life for some reason so I need to be in the mood to get sucked in

It might just be me, I don't see that many similar complaints online and my PS4 is honestly laggy as hell at the best of times it's at least 7 years old now. It's just the combo of open world (fast travel loading) + the usual dying a lot at the beginning makes it feel like ELDEN LOAD after a while. I hope they don't nerf bleed builds by the time I upgrade.

Oh I see. Yeah I think the characters interactions and banter are ok for the most part. The plots though are uninteresting and predictable. Evil priest evil emperor evil creature or whatever. I could not care less, and what I despise more than anything is when you are interrupted mid-mission by cutscenes. Wish there were a way to auto-skip them so you don't have to mash start when you want to try again.

> ^this. 90% of the game is "I can't lock on here because I'll just shoot off in a random direction if I do."
>This is a tower, so I should hug it because the camera is going to spin around it and shoot me off if I don't. After a while you just anticipate and LEARN how the camera is just going to fuck you over.
>I should purposefully attack the wall and use the AOE to kill the enemy because otherwise Knux is going to shoot off the edge when he attacks the enemy.
>Lean, wait 0.5s, THEN press A to switch rails.
Embed related is a good example (somewhere around 16 min). There's a jump Ross complains about making, but I realized that it's because you actually have to AIM at the spring, while Ross didn't do or notice that he did.

I'm almost done with Fire Emblem Thracia 776 and while it's very good, it's absurdly frustrating to play blind. I tried and had to restart with a guide all the way through. To be fair I am obsessed about not missing stuff but even then some of the shit that is thrown at you is downright unfair at times, and while you can figure some of it out through trial and error (or sheer luck…) not doing things a certain "optimal" way might bite you further down the line. You know that widespread RPG habit of stockpiling powerful but rare items and ending up never using them by the time you're at the end? Well it's one of these games where it might just be the way to go, more often than not.

I finally got through the three trials in the mansion. That thing Ross says in the end about feeling like a convict released from prison: YES. MILLION TIMES YES THAT WAS HARD. I'm taking a break from that level at the moment, holy shit that took me a couple days.

Anyways, that wasn't what I wanted to talk about, I wanted to talk about how subtle this game is in a bad way, and how I think that categorizes the 'jank' of this game.

1 - When an enemy first appears, you actually CAN'T homing attack them the moment you're close enough. You have to wait until their "set in place," where that can mean a lot of things in a lot of different circumstances. For example, if there's an enemy that has Tail's confusion status effect, you can homing attack, BUT sometimes that attack can lower the character's HEIGHT, which means you'll misjudge and fly off, OR sometimes they're stunned, BUT it's not Tail's status effect, so your homing attack won't work. The Pumpkins in the "spoopy" stage exemplify this beautifully. You have to wait until AFTER they spin around for the homing attack to work.
This is something Ross did wrong in his vid that he didn't notice, BUT THAT'S THE PROBLEM. It's REALLY HARD TO FIGURE OUT WHY your homing attack didn't work.
2 - This one took me FOREVER to figure out, but the MAIN cause of jank is how hitting a wall works. Picrel to help explain. Walls ONLY CANCEL THE PERPENDICULAR COMPONENT OF YOUR SPEED. This means that if you're flying at a million miles an hour and hit a wall, you can suddenly go FUCKING FLYING OFF INTO A RANDOM DIRECTION if you're so much as not directly on.
2b - I'm actually not sure whether it cancels the perpendicular component or actually bounces you off like a ball.
3 - Ross complained about this too, but your directional input is based on where the camera is facing, and in many sections the camera will automatically and very suddenly change facing. You HAVE to memorize where camera changes come up in certain areas otherwise your input will suddenly shoot you off the edge or throw you into a wall (which per #2 still throws you off into oblivion).
4 - I still don't understand why sometimes when you run into an edge your character will suddenly stop and go "Whoa!" and sometimes they'll just run off.
5 - There is a 'B' button that appears when you can use the "follow the rings" move. HOWEVER, you have to position yourself juuuuuuuust right in most stages. For example, in the spoopy mansion Ross got stuck because he didn't know why sometimes it followed the rings and sometimes it didn't. It's because if the angle between Sonic's facing direction vector and the vector pointing in the direction of the rings is too far out of phase from each other, the game will get confused and just randomly shoot you the fuck off into nowhere.
6 - FREQUENTLY you'll need to fight an enemy that requires the power character, but the platform you're fighting on does not have enough room to USE the power character! So, you have to either do this weird kiting to get them into just the right position or you have to use the special "kill all the enemies on screen" button.
7 - I talked about the "aim at the spring" thing before, but there are a LOT of areas like that. You don't notice that you have to set yourself up like 10 seconds BEFORE the actual segment hits to be in the right place. Like above, the game is NOT good at letting yourself know that you didn't just screw up with your inputs right there, but you screwed up 10 seconds ago.
8 - You can homing attack into the vines, but they auto-cancel jumps upon reaching their hitboxes. What this means is that you should never double-jump around vines because you'll accidentally run into a vine and then IMMEDIATELY fall off. This is harder than it sounds, because RIGHT after an area where homing attacks are essential you'll fall into a vine section and immediately die because you forgot the vine mechanics. Also, the hitboxes for the vines are abnormally large, which you'd think would be good, but it's really jarring and throws you off.
9 - The rail segments often do not give you enough time to see, usually around tight corner movements. There, the camera will pan much slower than you're actually moving, making you automatically slam into obstacles that you realistically would have no chance to responding to. In some tight segments, it makes more sens to move into the flying character and reset the speed by doing a really small jump.
10 - When you move, you AUTOMATICALLY chance direction to where you point the joystick. In other words, momentum doesn't work like you'd expect. You would EXPECT drifting to happen when you move. For example, in Sonic Colors, when you are going fast and move the joystick to the left, you actually arc left while gradually changing the direction your velocity is facing. In Heroes, if your joystick moves to the left, well then you better believe in instantaneous forces, because your ENTIRE velocity SUDDENLY flops over to the left, no drifting at all.

When it's all combined, Sonic Heroes is SUPER janky, but…you learn to harness the jank with enough practice.

the cycle: frontier. it's a free tarkov-lite with fortnite/stylized (not realistic) graphics. gear up, go into maps, complete objectives, loot, hunt people, extract, sell your haul, upgrade your base and vendors. no marketplace unlike tarkov, also much simpler damage/ammo system, limited equipment as of now .because i dont like paying for games and rarely is there a decent multiplayer game for free. and it is decent for something free, reminds me of old planetside, where you drop into the map and hunt people and loot their backpacks. it even has 3 'factions' like planetside. it's no mmo however, that would be cool but it seems like the mmo genre in general is dead. every new mmo is actually some instanced server bullshit, not a mega 1000+ player server. and the real mmos just die. everyone would rather play old school runescape and wow than amazon's new world for example.

I played a bunch of the demos for upcoming games from Steam Nextfest, my brief thoughts on each

>Selaco

Retro-style FPS made in GZDoom, it was pretty impressive with a lot of nice minor details. Enemies communicate with each other and are somewhat intelligent, they don't just bumrush you and will actually try to dodge your shots when you shoot at them. The normal difficulty was a decent challenge for me and there are a lot of difficulty settings like limiting saves to certain points and making you buy them or turning off the limited health regen.

>Cult of the Lamb

Roguelite that seems kind of like Isaac mixed with some town building mechanics, you find animals to convert to your cult and harvest resources while you go into dungeons. The art-style is very nice, it kind of looks like Paper Mario. The roguelite mechanics were mostly just choosing between weapons and bonuses like health up, etc, not very impressive but it was only a 20 minute demo so maybe the full game will have more interesting items and synergies.

>Metal: Hellslinger

FPS blended with rhythm mechanics, you get bonuses by hitting enemies to the beat of the music. Like the name suggests the music is metal and hitting enemies on the beat fills up a meter which makes it louder and adds vocals at the max level. Very neat concept and the demo level was enjoyable, only annoyance was the finishers randomly not working which is a pain since those are the main sources of health recovery.

>Midnight Fight Express

Isometric beat-em up, simple but fun. The default normal difficulty was way too easy though and the dodge feels overpowered since it has i-frames and a long distance, making it easy to just take pot shots at enemies without getting hit. Most enemies are easily staggered and had have pretty generous tells on their attacks as well. For the 3 levels which were less than 10 minutes each it was fine but the level select implies there will be at least 40 levels so hopefully some variety is added and maybe the difficulty is tuned a bit. I think a smaller sidestep without so many i-frames like in the Yakuza games would be a little more balanced. The game does have a scoring system based on things like completion speed and kill variety but it still needs more IMO to stay interesting for 40 levels.

>Ghost Song

Metroidvania with soulslike elements, this leans a little more into the metroid side for combat as you have an arm cannon and it takes place on some weird planet. The arm cannon overheats so you can't just spam it but the melee attacks actually gain power when you're overheated which was a little interesting. Movement felt too slow for me though and I'm not a huge fan of soulslike stuff, especially in metroidvanias. If it gets some improvements when it releases I might revisit it because the environment is cool and I like the cannon/melee combat synergy.

>Agent 64: Spies Never Die

FPS inspired by Golden Eye 64, I've never played that but this was decent fun albeit short, the demo is 1 level that took about 5 minutes to complete. There are other difficulties but from what I saw they mainly just added objectives or minor map changes. Enemies are pretty retarded in all difficulties and easy to kill, their aim sucks and the randomly decide to roll rather than shoot when they see them sometimes. Neat game and fun to play for a short time but I don't think this is my style of FPS.

>Nine Sols

Another metroidvania, also with soulslike elements but this leans more into Sekiro I think because parrying is vital to combat. The dodge roll has a long cooldown and not much distance so it can't outpace the combos of most enemies and they don't stagger when hit so you pretty much have to parry or tank hits in most cases. The artstyle is quite pretty and the parry system did click for me a little towards the end of the demo at the first boss so I might revisit it when it releases.

>Gloomwood

Thief-inspired stealth fps/immersive sim. Pretty neat, I wasn't blown away by it but it seemed competent and it doesn't have the magic vision shit that's in many modern games of this type, which I respect.

>Signalis

Survivor-horror with a top-down perspective (kind of, it's a little tilted backwards rather than being true top down, not sure what to call it). I generally don't play survival horror games but this was neat. Enemies can't travel through doors in the demo which I hope they eventually change. Otherwise it was fun.

>Cultic

Another retro-fps. Movement felt a little slow to me but that might be because I'm used to GZDoom. I liked the music and atmosphere though. Fun enough but it was kind of outshined by Selaco and Hellslinger for me.

>Moonscars

Yet another metroidvania with soulslike elements. I actually liked this one more than the others though, the combat feels faster and I like the artstyle and atmosphere although the graphics are a little low-quality and it's hard to read the environment sometimes. The main flaw is the game being way too easy, you have one pool for healing and casting spells and you refill it by attacking enemies but it fills up much faster than you'd expect and is easy to maintain. Also parries are incredibly easy to execute for the enemies in the demo at least due to a red flash that indicates exactly when to press the button. If they make the game harder on release it'll be good.

>Being a Penguin

Simple 3D adventure game/walking simulator, you play as a penguin and talk to other animals scattered around and hunt for ice cubes. Cute game, might check out the full release if it's cheap enough.

>Potion Permit

2D top-down action game that seems like it'll be similar to Rune Factory, but with alchemy as a focus instead of farming. I stopped playing 10 minutes in because I had to get a resource that was unreachable, I'm not sure if I'm retarded and just missed a path or if I was supposed to go back and talk to someone. It's early in dev so hopefully it'll end up good on release, not like there's much competition since RF5 dropped the ball hard and the Story of Seasons games are lackluster and don't have combat.

Selaco, Signalis, and Hellslinger are the only ones I'd probably buy day one just based off of the demo gameplay, the rest ranged from good to okay

Played the new Super Mario Strikers with a relative.
It was fun for 20 minutes, but that's all it takes to see 100% of the gameplay. AI is slow to think and there's no real strategy for getting the ball in the net because when you shoot on the goal, there's no way to aim exactly where an opening is, rather your active kicker just aims straight for the goalie who is always AI controlled. Powerups are a visual mess and the camera is always so high even when all players are grouped together, making it feel very impersonal. NHL games on the N64 were more hands-on than this.

Mario Golf and Tennis go far enough to justify their own games, but Strikers feels like a subgame of a multi-sport title such as Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Games.

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
playing the SNES version as I could not get into the PSP remake. I've heard it's not as bloated and grindy, but it's just as heavy on the story and dialogue.
I can't bring myself to care about these elements in games anymore, no matter how well executed they are. I used to think the 'gameplay before story!!!' crowd was going too far but I understand now.

I play Skyrim every once in a while. I do it on Legendary mode, one life only. I think I've gained some new perspectives on the game since I have to play differently. I haven't been using companions btw. In comparison to Morrowind, the guild quests don't give out much money. They give out 100 gold each to potentially travel to a different city and risk your life. That travel taking up a huge amount of time whether by foot, horse, boat, or wagon. In Morrowind, I took a look at the guild quests and the first guild quest in Balmora gives 100 gold. Cool. Then the second one gives 500 gold. The maximum amount of gold per quest is 1,000 gold. Same for the thieves guild. You'll have quests getting you 500-1,000 gold when you complete them. Also, with the teleportation system in the mage's guild only costing about 10-20 coins depending on location and disposition, it's much easier and fun to do these quests. Also, I can actually pay for training with this money. The radiant quests are just not worth your time. Even the mercenary ones, which still give 100 gold for bandits/giants and 500 gold for dragons for some reason. I find myself needing to expand my skills a lot before hitting up bandits, like in Morrowind. In Morrowind, I could go to a cave and potentially grind up my skills and level up or I could do the quests, get money, and pay for a trainer. I think a combination of both. By the time I was ready, I didn't need to kill bandits, of course. In Skyrim, my best bet is to scavenge, do odd jobs, and raid weaker sites like the silver hand fortresses. They're weak and carry silver weapons and fur armor. It's good for some money. You can also attack horkers in the north or wolves anywhere you can find them. I had about 4,000 gold accrued before I sadly died. The first 2,000 gold spent gave me 8 levels in heavy armor. Another 2,000 would have given me less. Training is quite expensive in Skyrim. I don't remember Morrowind's training costs being this prohibitive. It did get up to 800 I think. In Skyrim, it gets up past 1,000 and probably higher. It's been a while. I think training in Morrowind is less expensive then. Also, speechcraft is quite hard to train in comparison to mercantile in Morrowind. Mercantile in Morrowind was broken at higher levels though. I could re-sell items for higher prices to some merchants. Still, it was faster to train and more useful. That's not to say Skyrim's speechcraft is bad though. It's not bad at all. I would stack up 10% + 10% + fortify persuasion from beggars for extra help. It still feels like useful than Morrowind's though. I felt like a real merchant when I leveled mercantile up. Not so much for Skyrim. Also, ingredients in Morrowind had a minimum price of 1 for any ingredient. So if you picked a flower, it was guaranteed to be one drake for one flower. For Skyrim, if you pick up a flower, it's likely to have no price, and you give it away. So I guess alchemists have to get it themselves then lol. I think I'll find a mod for that actually. Same for radiant quests. I love the odd jobs though. I think Skyrim went a far way with odd jobs. There's a lot of variety if you can't fight. Just not worth it to fight for money though. Skyrim actually has gotten better with the versions too. Boats were added like Morrowind's boats for example. More quests too. Fishing. It's gotten more close to living in a fantasy land so far. It just needs a few mods to make guilds more worth it.

I might have to use a follower like my last successful run. Even with 200 hp, I can almost get one shot. It's pretty bad. I might stop trying legendary because it's gotten to the point of ridiculousness. I swear I'll need at least 500 hp to start. You start at 100 hp, so that's level 40. Crazy. I don't use crafted items of course. It feels wrong to use daedric when everyone uses steel at best. I don't feel like I'm in the world then. The guards in Morrowind had great armor I think. The most elite guards in Mournhold had some of the best weapons in the game.

Currently playing cities skylines. This is my city from the little park I made. Sucks that no one visits the location because of the way the game works (cims won't go on long hikes), but it is a nice spot to get an overview of the city.

Playing completely vanilla right now just to get achievements. Will get mods and actually spend time carefully planning the city once I reach the megalopolis milestone.

the fog color is brighter than the background color, so you have fogged out areas bright red against a dark crimson sky. it betrays the purpose and aesthetic of fog in early games where it obscured the render distance to prevent things from popping in and out of existence. the camera max distance should be lowered and the fog color should be made darker. easy fix but it seems like a deliberate design choice

also the textures vary dramatically. like in the second pic you posted, the plant thing (and most character models for this game) is way too high res compared to the adjacent tree, and maybe even compared to the sword he's holding when you look at everything else. you can get away with this on older hardware when the total screen resolution was dogshit and everything was blurry

havent actually played it though just looked at screenshots from other ppl

Why do people want to go back to the days of low res ugliness? I get pixel art and low poly because they both still look good if done well, but this is just low resolution paper mache graphics.

 No.57927

>>57926
well if you appreciate low poly and pixel art, you have a chance at understanding it. there is an early era playstation graphics aesthetic that is held by some as equal to pixel art, the 3d equivalent of pixel art. it's popular for indie devs to make games in some variation of that style, as well as 'demakes' in general

it's just really hard to pull off at higher resolutions. you get really things looking really inconsistent and sloppy sometimes. but it's nothing that can't be fixed

It just feels like when people make pixel art and low poly they play to the strengths of the style, being things like visual clarity or looking more detailed than they are. But this ps1 style is like playing to the weaknesses of the style, the textures are super low res and the models are jagged messes. I can see what they're going for but either I just don't have enough nostalgia for it or it just fell flat.

 No.57944

Playing halo infinite. Started playing on my TV because sitting on the couch is comfy, but console controls for an FPS are terrible. I have no idea why some normies prefer this.

 No.57950

Since you guys are in the topic of low poly games I'll ask.
Lately I've seen people claiming playstation games actually look better than n64 games, now back in he day it was pretty much an accepted fact that while the playstation had more and better games, the n64 looked better, I've yet to see a playstation game that looks as well as Conker's Bad Fur Day or Majora's Mask, for example.
I don't know if it's nostalgia, or the fact that ps emulators work better than n64 emus, or if I've been actually wrong the entire time but it's the weirdest shit I swear. One thing I will concede is that having CDs allowed playstation to have more detailed textures, because of the storage space, so maybe it looks better when upscaled? So I don't know, maybe people haven't really played the games on original hardware and crt TVs as intended
