any wizards into chess too? it's quite interesting with its unlimited options. a way to escape the bitter reality, as well. what's your elo rating? your favorite openings with white and black pieces? how much time do you dedicate for chess usually?
>>48468 (OP) There's already a chess thread here. >>>/hob/37393
I haven't played much chess for quite a while. As for opening, I'm mostly comfortable with the Sicilian, and Queen's gambit. I used to do 1.b3 Nimzowitsch Attack and 1.g3 Hungarian Opening, when I was practicing hypermodern and fianchetto, but never been very successful with this style. I also quite like Alekhine Defense and the theory behind, but not very good with it either.
What are some good ways of getting good in chess? Predicting and planning for several moves ahead is supposed to be a must for this game, but I have trouble imagining after a few moves and many times I don't understand the positional importances. Am I just dumb? How to overcome such challenges?
>humans Pfft. I've tied as whites with a couple of AIs ranked in their 2000s. On lichess stockfish level 5 is a walk in the park but I always lose against level 6. You're a brainlet if you can't make it into the 2000s. I've seen black pastors and Midwest farmers in their 2000s. 2 is either the first number of your elo rating or how many numerals it takes to write your IQ.
>>54549 gg bro i enjoyed the match thanks. I've been playing chess for like 4 years self taught via puzzles and books tbh. if you're into the game there are some amazing chess books around "champion psychology -igor smirnov" is my favorite! cheers wizbro
>>54551 Yeah gg. I think I'm not ready for rapid 10 minute games yet since I end up rushing and making poor moves. My brain can't work fast enough to strategize and outpace the clock.
>>57583 >now that chess has become a normie hobby, I'm dropping it lol wtf. Can't play against nameless people who might have different worldview than yours? Don' want the witches to think you're some normalfag when she sees you playing it? You were only enjoying it because it made you appear unique? A rise in popularity among any demographic won't change the game at all. It's not like the creators of chess are going to rise from the dead and tack on POZ'd politics and loot crates to the game. Rejoice that you'll have more people to play against, especially those who may be new and bring some out-of-the box tactics to the playing field. As long as you keep track of your ELO score somehow you won't be sludging through scrubs.
I was in the Chess Club during primary school and due to there only being like 4 of us in it at our school I went to the regional tournament by necessity and placed about 20th out of 200~, playing some opponents two years my senior. I specifically recall getting sub 10-move checkmate'd at some point, having not yet learned the importance of opening strategies and really just doing random things until our pieces met in the middle. I played Dyansty Warriors for PSP during the break and a lot of kids gathered to watch because the PSP was hot stuff then.
Been playing the Chess.com bots recently, I'm up to beating the Intermediate class easily. I'm very much interested in playing real people, but I fear I might paint myself in to a corner, by winding up in a game that takes long and then something IRL comes up or my internet cuts out. I also don't want to make anyone wait so I'd be rushed to make moves. I'm getting good at deducing which moves are good and which aren't and have been able to quickly determine what the opponent can do a few moves after, but still I don't want to risk being some noob's bad chess experience by dropping out of or dragging on a game.
I've been thinking of buying a nice set around Christmas and then doing sort of this POV "mail chess" thing over a social network or forum, where I take pictures of the board where the opponent would be seeing it from and face them against an avatar of myself of some sort, like a stuffed toy or crude physical amalgamation of my inner psyche in the form of a pile of dirty laundry donned with a wizard hat. Then they send their moves back in the same way, with the image I'm looking at being from my seat's POV against their avatar. If anyone would be interested in doing something dumb like this smack that reply button.
I love chess. Joined my local chess club recently and starting going every few weeks. Really fun to play randoms and make friends. I would recommend for all wizards because the people who go are very passionate about it
I suck at chess. I'm a 700 on lichess rapid. I do an opening then it feels like im automatically on the defense cus my opponents are 2 or 3 steps ahead of me. Not saying that's the case. It just feels like I'm the submissive one. After the opening say I move my knight out then opponent moves a pawn and suddenly I'm trapped or forced to make a concession that makes me lose material until its a long slog until I get mated. Idk how people are so much better than me.
>>61882 There are limited ways to opening a game and people train defenses against it, that said, they do shadow playing as well, from a position they imagine the possible plays, the enemy responses and possible plays to enemy response. In short, they get good memorizing moves and its defenses.
I've started playing actively like a year ago and learned a lot but I'm still shit. The only white opening I feel comfortable with is gioco piano, while with black I usually default to Caro Kann although I did study the Stafford gambit.
>>62242 Chess has a pretty weak correlation with IQ. At the top level it's more about rote memorization. I think even Age of Empires would have a more reliable correlation.
There's been chess grandmasters with IQs hovering around 100, I remember a thread on 4chan about it.
I've played it for ages while listening to other shit and can't get over ~900 or so in blitz because im not especially bright + I play intentionally goofy/fun openings. as white I like to go for the Danish gambit and as black the Latvian gambit. I've actually learned the lines pretty well but they're such dogshit openings that machines put them at like ~-3 or -4 instantly. more fun to have ridiculous open games though.
I play daily and have around 2000 10min games. Im around 1300 elo on lichess. I consider myself better than that ranking. I often play very lazy. Chess needs effort which i don't really have for everyday games.
>>50758 idk if its right or wrong as I am new to chess and only 700 elo but what if bishop takes knight then if king moves then he loses the rook or if it captures the bishop then rook can move horizontally to g6 and then king will be in check then you can move your rook to g8 and then black's rook can only move horizontally as its own pawn is blocking it from moving vertically so it has to capture that rook which you can take with the pawn and promote it to queen.
