The contempt for the workers is not some arbitrary or fickle thing. It is inherent in the moral philosophy of free trade, and necessary for the free trade philosophy to make sense. I suggest you read Adam Smith and Theory of Moral Sentiments to see where this is coming from - Adam Smith is not saying capitalism or free trade are all roses and will make some ideal society. He is quite aware of the consequences of free trade.
Really, I think people need to familiarize themselves with what the liberal economists actually wrote, before they jump to Marx who is critiquing all of that. Marx gets a lot of basic shit flat out wrong, and I have to believe it is deliberate because Marx is sitting in London and is well acquainted with these people and their views. Marx clearly understands with precise detail what the liberals actually intended, or else he wouldn't have been able to write what he did, but then he makes leaps to claim that the liberals are "blinded by ideology" or that the liberals believed in things they had no professed or implied belief in. It gets worse when the criminally dishonest actors like the Austrian School economists get in to try and tell people that their goofy philosophy doesn't need no stinking math or purpose. The idea that anyone was interested in making "fluffy capitalism" was nonsensical in the 19th century. Only at the very end of the century do you see the Fabian Society ghouls come up, co-opting socialism by telling people that the only thing possible was infantilization and supplication. The idea that the capitalist was there to make things for you, or had any obligation to "the system" is a gross misunderstanding of basic imperatives in the free trade arrangement, and it was only possible after the Fabians infantilized and degraded people. Even then, it only really sunk in when the fascists came to power, and imposed such a virulent and retarded ideology by overwhelming violence and fear.
Moral of the story is that the Fabians are basically the worst things in the world, and their intentions are far worse than anything the Nazis accomplished.
