The anonynimity is a big factor. Unlike most other places, there is no social capital to be gained, no identity or reputation to build, so people don't use them for the same reasons they use the non-anonymous platforms, and they draw a different crowd because of that.

For me imageboards are the best way to socialise for more than a decade.

It was some post about some rappers, iirc, which is bad enough, but the comments were another thing entirely. They were all a few words long and most had emojis in them. It was bonkers.

Furthermore, a counter-argument can be done that without future programmers being familiar with the internals of their devices from the get-go their future know-how acquisition will be more tedious, as they have to play catch up with about fifty years of software development that were completely abstracted away. Even worse if vibecoding catches on.
In the end, it's an enshittification on three levels: software UI (abstracting internals and forcing users into a playpen where becoming a power user becomes harder), hardware ergonomics (ditching away physical keyboards and incetivising most users to use a "smartphone", dictation software and autocorrect that doesn't penalize mistakes - which carries over the perverse incentives to the very art of knowing how to write, since "you don't need to know that") and hardware itself (as a cellphone won't ever be close to the power a desktop PC can offer).

They gave me an easy way to avoid my problems and on top of that it gave me tools that hardened me against any form of self improvement. The constant comparison against "normies" foster a strong "us" vs "them" mindset that kept me feeling hopeless. The constant overexaggeration and jumping to conclusions gave me a very twisted and unrealistic world view. Not actually ever "seeing" the person I was communicating with caused me to never learn how to connect with others or even that such a thing was possible.
