I agree, the show is ultimately just a projection of Anno's depression (ie. a 90's version of a Xitter trauma dump) with some random Jungian and occult symbolism bullshit mixed in to make people think it's some sort of very deep anime (in fact, in an interview Anno himself admitted that there's no deeper meaning).
People say that it was very influential for anime, but outside of random references, the only way it contributed to the medium was by introducing some character archetypes and other minor things, which admittedly were the only good things in the show.
