I agree, the show is ultimately just a projection of Anno's depression (ie. a 90's version of a Xitter trauma dump) with some random Jungian and occult symbolism bullshit mixed in to make people think it's some sort of very deep anime (in fact, in an interview Anno himself admitted that there's no deeper meaning).
People say that it was very influential for anime, but outside of random references, the only way it contributed to the medium was by introducing some character archetypes and other minor things, which admittedly were the only good things in the show.

I loved experiencing that show when I first saw it, but I'm not sure if I'd still love it if I rewatched it today.

Agreed. Didn't feel like it was anything deep or meaningful the way everyone always love to push it online. Just seemed weird for the sake of being weird. Throw in some fancy philosophical terms and admittedly cool visuals and you have a bunch of people claiming it's some kind of masterpiece. It just got on my nerves and I never watched any of the movies after I finished it.

It pains me that gatekeepers are basically stone cold dead in this day and age.

NGE was always popular with nerds/otaku but it never crossed into the mainstream until the last 10-15+ years. There was bunch of anime series that were popular with nerds but no normalfags were interested in "watching cartoons". It's only now because the popular opinion (shaped by the algorithm) they're suddenly all fans now. And it's impossible to call them out on it.

Dune I & II did well at the box office ONLY because the algorithm told them to watch it. Blade Runner 2049 earlier, was basically a commercial flop despite having the same kind of pacing and dense story telling. I literally remember multiple people walking out of theatre because it wasn't action packed film. I've talked to normalfags who've watched both and it's obvious they're withholding their personal opinion on Dune.
