Living in Japan

Does anyone on here live/want to live in Japan? I know I do.

To be clear I'm not some faggot weeaboo who thinks that life in Japan is just like the animes and there will be katana duels in the streets and schoolgirls screaming "UGUU SENPAI" everywhere but I do like the culture and the aesthetic of the country, especially Tokyo but also the really rural parts of the country.

I've looked around and there's a lot of work in my field, most of it mercifully conducted in English. Apartments are also fairly affordable, at least outside of the hubs of the biggest cities. There's nothing really keeping me in the states; my family has basically forgotten about me, I have no friends and my work is all online so it goes where I go. I'd have to sell my guns but that's not really a huge loss for me, plus it'd be nice to have a cash infusion right before I go.

Any stories or advice?

Didn't see one in the catalog, so I'd like to have a thread on Japanese internet to share interesting things we've come across. Can be videos, sites, articles, particular threads, etc.

I'll start off with a few things below.

Gal-games with loser MCs

Aaah, disgusting. I'm currently 2 or so hours into If My Heart Had Wings.
Why do VNs do this shit? I feel so much cringe. It's not right. I shouldn't be playing this, I cannot at all self-insert into MC. He's an attractive turbo-normie with friends and normie aspirations and a normal healthy lifestyle. He socializes and is super friendly, kind and skilled in all fields of life. I had the same problem when playing other VNs as well. I can never self insert.

Please, wizards, help. Give me a bishojo game where I play some loser. I usually have troubles with self-insertion in anime as well. Shit where the MC is a NEET hikki loser is apparently more prevalent in anime than VNs…
Anyone got some good recommendations?

Anime recommendations

I'm looking for a new animu to watch, I've listed some of the stuff I highly rated, maybe there will be something others may be interested in listed below, but I would greatly appreciate any recommendations based on what you think I might love.

Animus: Serial Experiments Lain, Akagi, Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, Psychiatrist Irabu, FMA:brotherhood, neongenesisevangerion, steins gate (prob gonna watch steins gate: zero if nothing seems better), Gilgamesh, Death Note, Ping Pong the animation, Baccano! , NHK…

Those are the best I can think of at the moment.

Naruto

Reminder that an in depth enjoyment of naruto is anti-normalfag, as regular normals enjoy naruto on a very superficial level, maybe only watching a few episodes every now and then, and internet/4chan discord chads hate naruto because it isn't hardcore weeb enough.
Naruto is perfect for wizards. Pain is the perfect anti-natalist wiz.

Evangelion

Okay, I just finished the the series.
and I have to ask - is this a joke? Like a big decades long meme? I think this was the worst anime I've ever seen. A pseudo-philosophical LARP. Like does it actually have a point? A meaning? Beause I think I just witnessed someone's acid trip.

Unironically is the worldwide fame a LARP? Or is it like with the emperor's new clothes, where nobody mentions that he's actually naked?

What the acual fuck? Either I'm a brainlet retard or I'm the only sane person on earth - but what the fuck did I just watch?

It reminds me of those old french psychological art films… What a fucking waste of time…

Japanime artists

post all your favorite japan/anime artists. you can post hentai artists too since most of the good ones make hentai.

The first image is from 廃狼@新刊よろしく yotushiku something, I can only read the end of it. He is an artist on pixiv, I don't know if he posts his work anywhere else, but everything he posts is amazing.

The second picture is from an artist I found on pixiv called SPEC. I don't like most of his work, but this one is in a good style I wish I could see more.

The third image is made by Akyuun, another artist I found on pixiv. I like the colors, it looks dreamy.

I'll post more artists I like later. Please add whatever art you like.

Worst thing you've seen or read

Wizards, what was the absolute worst anime you ever watched or the worst manga you ever read?
R: 12 / I: 2

Watamote

I despise this series.

Don't give me the "IT MAKES A TURNAROUND IN CHAPTER 132498579182, AND IT'LL ALL BE WORTH IT." Even with the turnaround, all it becomes is the epitome of "Jus b urself :^)" logic. Without the turnaround it's just embarrassment, and I have enough of that thinking about myself.

This is a series made by normies to laugh at wizards.
R: 23 / I: 2

Ojamajo Doremi

This is a highly underrated, extremely fun series that can occasionally get pretty sad and heavy. No one talks about this hidden gem enough.
R: 21 / I: 6

Most disappointing anime

What was the most disappointing anime you have ever watched? For me personally, it was Sailor Moon Crystal. I'm a big Sailor Moon fan and I was pumped for the new series to come out, even though it kept getting delayed I didn't care, I just wanted to feel the magic I felt watching the series for the first time again. But when the show aired in the summer of 2014 i was met with a show with extremely sloppy animation, poor writing and really just an underwhelming vibe to it. It was just such a gut punch to see my favorite show get treated with such a mishandled and mediocre retelling.
R: 106 / I: 13

Anime is Perfect

I've come to this realization after watching tons of comedic, ecchi, slice of life cutesy animes. The characters precisely because of their simplified caricatured personalities form together a perfect universe - there are no imperfect parts to the characters, they're idealized to the utmost, every feature of their fits perfectly, the relationships as well. Anime is the better version of our world. I'm happy I have anime in my life. I can feel a huge variety of emotions while watching it, which are inaccessible to me in any other medium, be it movies, books, TV series, actual real life. I feel no connection to anybody in the real world. I care not for even for my parents. Yet I still cry for these animated characters. Nothing moves me but anime, the art style, the characters, the music, everything about it fills my soul with joy (and sadness, anger - the whole emotional scope, but mostly joy)

I hope when I die I'll go to 2D heaven.

I've been reading this web novel about swinging http://novel18.syosetu.com/n2838cn/ and a few others that have been really good. Non- Japanese created famous girl

Hello, been lurking here for a while but this is actually my first post. I'm looking for a famous female character which I'm pretty sure was created by a non-Japanese guy; he's probably Indonesian or Malaysian. The succubus in the picture kinda reminds me of her (again not sure, though).

revengful characters in anime

Hey. What character I like from anime?
I like Scar from FMA and FMA B. Why? Because he was mysterious and his country was treated poorly when there was a war.
But after war was over he came after alchemists, because he wanted revenge so much.

That impressed me.

Are there any character who wanted revenge in anime? Give me examples of them.

Manga thread

My brain is too fucked to pull two intelligible sentences together, so pardon me if I don't make any sense.

As there are just too many manga, it is a huge pain to dig into this pile to find good ones to read. So why don't we share each other great manga, and good mangaka.

I'd recommend Fumetsu no Anata e (To You, the Immortal), pic related.

Story of some sort of immortal being of the shape of a sphere, has the ability to imitate object and being in his surrounding. It bit by bit, start to experience the world, pain, hardship, death, not having any idea of anything of who it is, and slowly develop of conscience. It's set in a fantasy world, where the clothing and customs are loosely inspired by early Japan, and maybe the Ainu.

Beautiful and detailed artstyle, incidentally the author of this manga is Ooima Yoshitoki which can explain why it reminds me of Koe no Katachi (same author after all).

New to anime

I've never been into anime and I don't know much about it. However, I decided to check out One Punch Man and I'm enjoying it a fair bit. I've never been able to stick to hobbies or find any passion or purpose in life. Is anime a worthwhile thing to get into? I'm beginning to see why so many people love it. The problem is, it just seems so dense. So much to learn, so many forums, so many niches. It's a little intimidating for a newcomer. Where do I begin? Should I learn Japanese? I've never been able to actually succeed at something like that, but maybe getting into anime would give me a reason too. Will anime improve my life and make me a better person? Will it make the bad things in life, like wageslaving and disease, more bearable?

I await your responses. Thank you, wizards.

Friday - Monday

In one anime there is a person who is called Friday - Monday. He is synonym of evilness in the serie.
But 7 years after watching Madlax, now I got something a have my own interpretation.

Friday - Monday - means five days per week. Everything that bad happened in my life was in these days - from monday to friday. nothing bad happened in saturday - sunday.

So the creators of that anime did great job in naming evil person like that. At first I was watching the serie I was laughing because I sound funny to hear that someone is called ,,friday-monday"

but now its not

Lonely anime

Do you know any more anime that give you a feeling of isolation and loneliness? Where the interactions between characters are short? Where it's more about the atmosphere created by images and sound rather than story and dialogue? They don't necessarily have to take place in desolate places. It could also be about the sense of isolation you get from living in a big city.

Hajime no Wizzo

Can we take a moment to discuss what is one of the best anime out there: Hajime no Ippo?

This anime managed to inspire me and pump me up because the main character, Ippo Makunouchi, is the classic outcast loner type. Shy and diffident, small, submissive, gets bullied, but is a good guy deep down, very caring and generous. He's also hardworking, which I definitely can't identify with, but it is something I admire. He has a good reason to be hardworking, to support his single mom who is actually not a bitch or anything which is probably why Ippo is a good dude despite his meek demeanor which probably stems from the lack of a strong male role model because his father died young. Although I have a father, he is not strong nor a role model really so I can identify with this. Ippo has no hope for a bright future, just getting locked into the path that his capitalist society has determined for him due to economic conditions: continuing to help his mom run her fishing boat business. He has no other skills like charm, confidence, or assertiveness that could make him successful elsewhere anyway, but then, he has his fateful encounter with the sport of boxing.

This show doesn't try to delude anyone, basically normies in society will not like you unless you are useful to them, unless you have high social status, they will not respect you. I have always resented this fact about the world because I have no desire to engage in the social games of exploitation that normies have to play to climb the social ladder, or the stupid peacocking to pretend I've done it better than I really have, or any of the dumb normie bullshit in consumer society, but what this show does do is a provide an almost magical path, one of honor with simple and fair rules and methods of determining status, and that status is accepted by society at large.

Martial arts has a vaunted history in our society because of its massive usefulness to society since even before the dawn of civilization. It is truly primal, evoking the savage animalistic ways of determining dominance in primates like chimps or baboons. With the dawn of civilization it was also venerated because strength brought peace and prosperity and the warrior class assumed its role as the nobility the next step down from the priests and kings who rule the people. Even to this day, a warrior's strength is still respected. (Actual war though in modern times is so fucking disgusting I want nothing to do with it.)

What is presented to Ippo then is nothing less than an ancient path available to humans to gain all the rewards that society has to offer without any of the bullshit and dishonor of trade. He starts working really hard at boxing, trains himself, hones himself in the fires of battle and comes out stronger each and every time, and as his strength grows, so does his social status. He gains the respect of everyone, they give him lots of money, even fame and celebrity status despite his personality never really changing at all. Of all the normalfag paths to take in life, this one has always appealed to me the most. It is a fair and honorable contest of skill, you get out of training what you put in.
R: 7 / I: 0
Is this show worth getting into? I love shows from the 90s and 00s that are really cute and comfy.
R: 34 / I: 8
Is anyone else exceedingly bothered by the fact that they forget anime they've seen? It's like losing an important part of yourself. All these worlds and characters, even if they're fictional, feel dear to me, yet I forget what happened to them and sometimes their existence as a whole. Of course, you can re-watch anime (I'm on a spree of doing that right now), but it still upsets me.

It's as if these shows are disposable information to fill my time with, and can subsequently be discarded once I've "consumed" them. I despise my brain for failing to even roughly recollect the events of an episode I saw a month ago, yet recalling that time a random kid in elementary school made a sarcastic comment about my cellphone on the landing of the northeast stairwell, between the third and second floor. Do I have a normalshit brain that marks memories pertaining to fictional stories as unimportant and consequently, readily deletes them? How can I remember the series I've seen better? As autistic as it sounds, I've resorted to taking notes on anime and reviewing them at irregular intervals, but even that ends up in me only remembering the general plot of the show, with the finer details as well as recollections of the sounds and visuals falling through the cracks.

ITT: Mecha Anime that you Really Liked

This one here's Aldnoah.Zero. While many might argue that it's not really good, I actually managed to understand the anime on a deeper level. It has a lot of metaphors and says something a lot about Earth and the people living there. The main problem is that the characters are not so written well and being an anime with only 24 episodes, it kinda got rushed when it could have been a lot better if only they made more episodes of it. So, what mecha anime do you like, fellow apprentice wizards and wizards ?

Yuri aesthetics

It seems that a lot of yuri works tend to have this particular aesthetic about it. The distinction is clear when compared to normal male-female romance manga. Yuri artworks tend to have flower imagery, mellower color, more elegance. On the other hand, conventional romance work tends to have a more passionate theme, uses bright and simple colors, and have characters that exudes cuteness and salaciousness rather than beauty. In the story itself, yuri also tends to be more emotional and have more subtle developments and interaction. This is also expressed into traditional yuri cliche where instead of a regular highschool, the story takes place in a prude ladies' school with mild-mannered characters and repressed interactions.

I wanted to ask if this is something other people have noticed as well or if I am making things up, or maybe it's a pretty obvious observation and I am just slow on the uptake. That said I am actually not that interested in yuri itself but I found this particular aesthetic very appealing to me, so it saddens me that I can't seem to find this kind of thing outside yuri works. A non yuri recommendations with this kind of stuff would be nice. If nobody cares though, then feel free to make this into a yuri thread.

Please keep identity politics out and be civil please. Thank you.

Anyone's got jaded of anime? Not the drawing style, just the medium.
I haven't watched a show since 2016 and still can't summon the will to watch anime any longer. It's hard to fathom how people can watch the same SoL/generic shounen over and over again without even getting tired, and even though I was never really into these genres, I can see that they're roughly the same rehashed pile of garbage. The anime industry seems to be bent more on milking brainless otaku and less keen on creating new content from my pointbof view. I'd rather read a good book or watch an opera through my PC if I'm actually in need of relaxation. Who's with me? Have you guys been looking for alternative media as well?

Fantasy world building

The most fun part about anime for me are always the cool fantasy settings that have integrated magic or spirits or robots into their culture or something like that. Sci fi future dystopias or post-apocalyptic societies or idylic fantasy tribal settings are way more fun that boring old real world settings. I don't want a boring slice of life in a japanese high school, give me some fucking cool fantasy worlds please!

Neon Genesis Evangelion

I'm kind of surprised this isn't already in the catalog. So, uh, let's talk about Evangelion?

The first time I saw it was actually on an online stream organized on…either here or back when wizardchan was still up. In retrospect, I don't know HOW I managed to watch the anime I did and not run across NGE. It's like never hearing about Star Wars, but that's how it was. In any case, I thought it was a sort of Plan Nine kind of thing, because I came into the stream midway through the series, and particularly after seeing Episode 25 and 26. It felt like the narration at the beginning of Plan Nine. I also wasn't too phased by the apocalypse because…isn't that how all anime end? So many JRPGs and anime have to have some sort of over-the-top climatic ending that I sort of just shrugged it off.

Afterwards, I thought that others would have funny stuff to say about it, but then realized that…this was something pretty serious to a lot of people. It sort of annoyed me because it came off as horribly pretentious to me. Since then, a few years have passed and I've forgotten about it. But then recently it nagged on me, and I saw it again. It struck a chord with me. I hate to say that because I don't want to give an inch to all the pretentious reviews I read. Why it has done so NOW I wish I knew why, and for some reason that really disturbs me.

I think the best review I've seen on NGE is a single sentence long, "You like NGE in inverse proportion to the amount you like yourself."

It's disgusting.

Ergo Proxy

Any wizzie who haven't seen this should. Definitely has some interesting philosophical content and a very atmospheric and oddly comforting world imo. I'm sure many other wizards would find a barren, gray waste devoid of people as comforting at least.
Basically a cyberpunk world in which the remnant of humanity inhabit various "domes" spread across the wastes, and they are guarded over by divine seeming creatures known as "proxies".
Don't wanna say too much and spoil.

Nature Focused Anime Recommendations?

I want to watch more anime that is focused on nature scenery. I really enjoyed Yuru camp, but I felt the last few episodes were too focused on high school slice of life crap. I want to see more anime like Non Non Biyori, or if there is a series out there about a guy that lives off grid that would perfect. Thank you in advance.

Tourism Simulation

I always fantasized about going to Japan and Hong Kong but beeing a poorfag I can obviously not afford it. Do any of you know some good tourism simulations (can be either video games or documentary movies)?

Here is a list of things I already watched/played:
>yakuza series of video games
>sleeping dogs
>various HK movies from the 80s - 10s
>doc about the suicide forest in japan
>doc about homeless people in japan
>doc about tokyo beeing destroyed and rebuild 2 times in a few decades

What I sometimes also do is just use Google street view and browse around. ARTE is a good tv station for doc movies (those of you in yurop might know this german/french coop station).

Anime Recommendation Thread

Tell us your anime likes and dislikes or some sort of information about what you're looking for, or just examples of past shows you've enjoyed, and hopefully someone will recommend you a good show to watch.

Like
>plot driven
>interesting fantasy or sci-fi worlds
>interesting social commentary or philosophical stuff
>hero archetypes
>good character arcs
>political intrigue
>fights where strategy is involved rather than just powering up with beams or determinationing your way through it

Dislike
>romance (esp. pedo shit)
>boring slice of life shit where nothing outside the realm of normality happens (cute succubi doing cute things)
>high school setting and children mcs in general (not always I've just seen a lot of them and it's getting old especially as I myself am getting older)
>slow paced
>fan service that takes away from the plot and wastes time
>comedic relief/gags (situational comedy is fine but the japanese tend to do this annoying shit where they put on wonky music and people yell at each other and they call it comedy)
>style over substance (eg, lain, technolyze, FLCL)
>lol so randumb shit

Specifically at the moment I'm looking for anime dealing with world domination or military/political conquest. I've enjoyed pretty much every one I've watched with that theme eg Code Geass, TTGL, No Game No Life, LOGH, Berserk, Magi, etc. I'm open to other suggestions as well though.

I don't need it to include all of my likes or avoid all my dislikes, just not be too excessive. I'm pretty indifferent to bad CGI/animation as long as the substance is good. Thank you in advance for any suggestions you might give me.

Anyone here been to japan?

Times ticking so I’m thinking about making my pilgrimage soon. What places would you recommend going to? I’d like to see a lot of mecha stuff but any recommendation would be fine.

Also, how much Japanese do i need to know to go? My vocabulary is limited to 3 or 4 words, so I thought about just paying someone here to come with me to translate but that’d suck if I payed all that then he ditched me so I’ll just tough it out and learn some

Is Zeke the most wizardly manga character to ever be written? Also, spoilers from the new Shingeki no Kyojin chapter.

It makes me sad that anime from the early 2000s have already faded into obscurity, and discussion has all but died off on imageboards and forums. I see maybe one short-lived thread per year about tsukihime on all the imageboards I lurk. Do younger fans of anime just not like the style of 2000s stories?

I keep hearing how good this show is and I'm thinking of checking it out. I also heard that this show has a legitimate debate over sub vs dub.

save the bathing waifus?

AnimeBaths.Wikia.com (all 6200+ pages) is being shut down November 30: https://animebaths.wikia.com/wiki/?diff=119753

I don't know if the owner will be able to save it or not, I want to make an independent effort but need help with the mechanics. https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Exporting_all_the_files_of_a_wiki says you can't follow standard procedure like https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Moving_a_wiki if you lack FTP access, and directs you to follow https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Export#1._Get_the_names_of_pages_to_export which says to use stuff like MySQL / PostgreSQL / Python but I don't have experience with any of these. Do they seem like absolute requirements or just ways to make the process go faster?

I also have a problem because it recommends using MS Word or Open Office or Vim but I can't run either of these on a Lubuntu OS that I've resorted to on an elderly PC. "Leafpad" does have a "replace" function but I can't get it to detect tabbing to replace that with line returns to get a newline list for each page.

Any NEETs here wanna team up with me and translate some manga? I can translate but I need someone to edit. We could be a two-person team and release frequently if both motivated. Anyway I'm not some newfag to Japanese like a lot of translators / Japanese learners, I can read fluently basically anything without a dictionary. I would prefer if people were long term NEETs though and not just summerfags who are taking a short break, or at least someone with a decent amount of free time. I don't want to be a one-chapter-per-month group, I would like to aim for at least 1 chapter a day to be honest.

Japanese wizchan

Is there a japanese wizchan with japanese wizards speaking japanese with the same rules here but with no gay mods/chadmin? If there isn't I was thinking of making one. I can probably only pass the n1 japanese test though since I've read most of tae kims grammar guide, but I don't want to make a japanese imageboard until I can at least pass the n3 so I can read the comments without trouble. I want to do this because I spend a lot of time here but it would be better time spent reading wizardly japanese posts so I can practice my japanese at the same time and no gaijin is good too. Would any other wizards like a website like this to be made? If any of you are interested and can speak japanese we can team up and I'll handle the programming, but I need someone to translate all the rules and text into japanese. I also need mods that can speak japanese and english to ban all the failed normal japanese posters.

I'll never understand why this faggot didn't fuck them all bloody raw every day. Especially washu.

At what rate do you wizzes consume anime/manga? I used to be able to get through 5+ 20min episodes a day or about 6 30 page chapters but now it's 3 episodes or 2 chapters at most.

I have been obsessed with Hokuto no Ken/Fist of the North Star for as long as I can remember. It was the first anime I actually sat down and watched from beginning to end.
Then, I watched it again, and again, and again…
Each viewing is better than the last. It's one of the only things that makes me feel emotion.

The complicated lore and history of the martial arts that's explored in this universe, the focus on protecting children, the Old Testament style righteous justice which almost always leads into very depressing monologues from the antagonists about why they committed the evil that they did, watching Bat and Lin develop both physically and mentally.

Not only do I think it's the best anime, but the best narrative ever crafted across any medium as well.
The first time I watched it, I approached it like a dumbass action anime like most people did I think. It has a bad reputation. I think Jojo fan leakage is worsening Hokuto no Ken's image all the more.
On my subsequent viewings however, I truly absorbed everything. Shu can't be on the screen without me crying at this point. You have to understand that the fighting is a plot device and not the main draw!
Although it is a fucking cool bonus. A world where practicing martial arts makes you a God. The martial artists all rule over territories and have armies, but any real battle must be dealt with by the martial artist ruler himself, because bullets and blades cannot even wound a martial artist; only the hand of a better martial artist God can harm them.
They're like glass cannons. Unlike in other shonen where blows can be exchanged for days until one falls, the martial arts in this universe are so powerful that most fights even with the most vicious of opponents are ended in a single strike. That goes for the protagonist, too. He has been laid waste almost a dozen times in just one hit.

Yeah, I don't know. It just makes me sad that it doesn't seem that popular in the West (outside of the nu teenaged /v/ user anime fans that watch it ironically). I never see it mentioned anywhere…
Watch this embedded video if you've never seen Hokuto no Ken. I hope this great moment will inspire you to do so. The anime is filled with moments just like these.
The manga is missing a lot of these great scenes and is inferior in my opinion. I recommend watching the anime first and reading the manga second, mostly for the great art it has.

What percent of (good) manga is not translated into English? Is it just high demand pleb tier manga that gets translated?
