They are actually very different, but not in the way you describe, mostly in characterization and, obviously, on looks.

I personally don't see anything wrong with it unless it becomes an all-consuming obsession. Then, depending on how far you'll take it, it might pose a health risk of some sort (excluding severe isolation from anyone that may have been in contact with you).

But waifuists don't want their waifu to be real. The whole point of fantasy is that you have complete control over it. Once something becomes "real" it's completely out of your hands.
