 No.38211[Last 50 Posts]

I'm looking for Youtube channels or just single videos which provide detailed analysis about the story/gameplay/game design/whatever of video games or just interesting theories, facts and other stuff like that. I don't really know how to explain it any better so I'm just gonna link a few examples.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vp4-9G47uF0 (Oblivion analysis)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2X2tiINl-X8 (Nier Automata analysis)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEj5FsBXFuM (Mass Effect indoctrination theory (there are three parts I believe))

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lk8tsK-FIdE (Pokemon Yellow glitch series)

I also like this guys game design videos

or pannenkoek2012's SM64 videos.

I just realized I'm being kinda vague here, I'm bascially searching for informative game videos. Any game goes.

Matthewmatosis makes some pretty good videos.
Shammy does that kind of thing, too, but it's mostly comedic. There's also smudboy, Jerks Sans Frontieres (for some soulsborne lore), MandaloreGaming, and maybe some more that I can't remember, I dunno.

Found this video review/analysis about Mario Odyssey, I've only watched half of it but I agree with most things being said.

>Accursed Farms
Ross's Game Dungeon is really relaxing to watch, would recommend. Freeman's Mind 2 sucks though.

Thanks for mentioning Accursed Farms, nice channel.

>go in to watch some vg stuff, end up watching some depressing video about youtube demonetization and bankers never going to jail

Well fuck me, it's my own fault. Let's watch some of those Freeman's Mind now..

Supper Bunny Hop has some decent videos

Video game classication
I wish he done a little segment for the Australian system though.

Shouldn't games be about game-play?

Half-life mods revisited, more interesting than i expected

A critique of Life is strange that i honestly found hilarious

Comparing Morrowind and Skyrim main quests, really illustrates degradation of the series

>Oblivion analysis
somewhat unexpectedly it made me want to replay skyrim instead of oblivion, i always considered skyrim to be worse, but now i see that it was overall a huge improvement over oblivion.
now if only i could bother to install all the mods, playing without them would feel like i'm missing out.

Ahoy makes very interesting documentaries about video game history. I'd definitely recommend him especially if you are into retro games.

Marphy Black: Mostly Half-Life and GoldSrc games, but there's plenty besides.

The Mylifeingaming guys are arguably the best at what you're looking for, OP.

Here I've provided you some additional videos of their work which I've enjoyed over my time watching them.

This guy does in-depth videos on rts games but occasionally does other genres. Most recent video is on They are Billions.

>Mark Brown
he fakes videogame footage to suit the point he is making. here he does it in an invisible tutorial video.

Interesting. He raises some fair points against the video, but he misses the mark on some things that the top comment pointed out as well. One being that Mark was comparing that instance of HL2 showing the player how to dissect enemies compared to Dead Space, but according to this guy he acted as if Mark was saying HL2's overall design was superior to that of Dead Space which was never the case then goes on to show "contradictory" footage in Mark's own video of instances where HL2 does the opposite of what Mark's discussing. Which would be valid if Mark was talking about HL2's overall design and not what it did in that particular instance.

He also makes the point that Mark's examples with tooltips are bad, and they are. Then goes on to act as if Mark's entire idea of hamfisted tutorials is inane because of his bad examples, which is ridiculous because games with hamfisted tutorials are a thing, and what's ironic is that there's two examples in his own video. Dead Space beating the player over the head with "Shoot the limbs" is one, and even if they did that because of the game's marketing campaign that doesn't change how it's implemented, and the second of a Dishonored tooltip flat out telling you pacifist = good, killing = bad which he then spends ~2 minutes talking about how this is an alien concept that couldn't be shown to the player (If you play like a murderous psychopath, surprise surprise, you'll get treated like one). That's also not even going into his Assassin's Creed example where previously in the video he makes the point that some games have mechanics that are complex and the play can't figure out themselves (which is true) he then goes to say that Mark's example with AC makes no sense even though it's an example of something simple (Using the left stick to move during climbing, something anyone who's played an ass creed game could figure out without being told).

Overall, decent video held back by trying to be snarky and falling on itself in face of its own critiques.

yeah, he is smug as fuck, but i'd say mauler has significantly improved since then and became one of the best critics out there, though he's been focusing on movies lately.

I like to watch this guy sometimes.
Maybe he makes stupid jokes or show his face too much but he reviews old and weird pc games and it's fun.

I love Ross' Game Dungeon, too bad he won't upload for a while.

thoughts on dsp? "this is how you don't play x" can be pretty funny, but his bitching gets really old really fast. while he is bad at videogames, he is not THAT bad as people make him out to be, he just gives off such impression by constantly bitching and playing like a total pussy.

When I just want to watch gameplay I check out Vinesauce Joel's channel, he's not very good at games but plays decent games and is not obnoxious when he talks, except maybe when he makes that stupid cookie monster "metal" voice. I usually watch his videos on bed.
I've only watched "This how you don't play…", his Dark Souls walkthrough was fun. Tried to watch his own stuff but got bored real fast.
>he just gives off such impression by constantly bitching and playing like a total pussy
I think he got to the point where he just pretends to be retarded because he knows that's what gives him views.

i really like Noah Caldwell-Gervais he is good discussing video game narratives and how they work with gameplay, but he is not so good at talking purely about mechanics and his videos are not well edited, like you can hear a mouse click every now and then.

Any recent channels/videos?

A lot of these analysis videos are just people sniffing their own farts and trying to appear intellectual. It's really fucking sad.

https://www.youtube.com/user/phreakindee/ LGR is a dude who likes old computers and old games. A lot of his stuff is nostalgia bait but it's cozy.

He's a lolcow, you don't watch him yourself. Every few months see what dumb shit he's done and then check back a few months later.

https://www.youtube.com/user/Yakumo1975 Retrocore is an English dude living in Japan. He gets cheap Chinese consoles and reviews them. Compares a single game on multiple systems and does full niche system library reviews. Cozy videos.

>A lot of these analysis videos are just people sniffing their own farts and trying to appear intellectual.

Agreed. Most analysis channels are just a person explaining why they really like/dislike a game while bloating their video length with things that could easily be cut out. The ones where the person is giving a game a fair assessment while saying things that justifies the video length are rare.

I saw a 7 hour pokemon ruby retrospective where half way through he starts to promote communism. It was something to behold.

I've seen that video recommended to me a few times. I assume they run out of things to say after 40 minutes and either start rephrasing past points or going off on unrelated tangent (usually they do both).

He makes some decent points and it's not a bad video overall but he starts making social commentary on the pokemon world and it's just dumb. Pokemons like Smash bros, you're not supposed to look deep into it. It's a world made just deep enough for the game and nothing more. When pokemon started trying to tell stories it spoiled the game.

I Shot You First: Networking the Gameplay of Halo Reach

This was interesting how they hid lag in the game's animations.

Networking is always weird. For responsive net games you do client-side prediction, which means every person is seeing a slightly different reality and hiding the synchronization is a dark art.

this channel is underrated and comfy

Software engineering guy who occasionally goes into more technical concepts when it comes to games.

I wish more game analysis channels were like Matthewmatosis. No smug or condescending persona towards anyone who doesn't agree with their main point, no abundance of claims with no elaboration or evidence, and the content within the video always justifies the length.

I really like Accursed Farms but only a portion of his videos are game reviews. They're pretty good though, if you don't know it already it's worth checking out.

>No smug or condescending persona towards anyone who doesn't agree with their main point
Even though I generally agree with channels like Gamingbrit and Mauler the way they act as if their opinions are so refined and well thought out really puts me off them sometimes. Speaking of it now a lot of gaming related channels made by britishgroids seem to be assholes who think their views are the end all to anything.

i stopped taking mauler seriously when he has no problem making 10 hour long videos about the plotholes in a movie but when it comes to infinity war all of a sudden he can ignore them. Love how he considers himself "objective"

Tehsnakerer is a brit and he isn't like that. Though most of his videos are less "critique" and more describing his experience with obscure or lesser known games. He occasionally reviews more well known titles, but his videos of this, Technomancer, and White Gold are my favorite.

nana825763's playthrough of MInecraft is pretty interesting.
He's playing the game for the first time, and he is using no guides at all.
He has english subs on all the videos. I like his editing style, and it's interesting to see how he figures things out.

Also, he is the guy who made the original Username 666 video and similar creepy videos.

Thank you wiz, I'm enjoying this. It's very comfy & relaxing.

No problem.
The latest episode (#97) left off on a huge cliffhanger, so I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the next episode.
There are still a lot of things this guy has to figure out about the game, wich gives me reason to keep watching.

Looks very comfy. I'll watch this tonight in bed on my wizphone.

socially confident and integrated japanese men arent good people

Nice projection

Before anyone has a bitch fit it even says at the very beginning it ain't political (can't believe shit like this needs a trigger warning in current year).

Anyway it is just looking at some reasoning behind game preference in certain demographics which I found sort of neat both in how they related to the game play loop/game design and how it also relates to evolutionary physiology.

Political or not, he's just saying typical stuff like "men aren't valued by society" and vaguely relating it to the main point of the video (and without much to backup those claims).

guy makes videos showcasing various doom mods

There's always YongYea

I thought it used to be the opposite, that men like goal-oriented point-scoring games, and succubi like more chitchatting social Sim games

How would open world games count as "chitchatting social sim games"?
Every open world game I have played has been very goal oriented.

its pretty impressive how even today people keep making Doom mods that almost modify the entire game

I wish I was smart or determined enough to mod games in such ways.

I wish I was good at art so I could make things without vanilla assets.

Dialog wheels out the ass in a lot of open world games. You can still do things for people in social situations, but the social aspect is key. Take a game like Mass effect or Skyrim. You're chatting to people to find out what you need to do next. In the man's mind the act of finishing the quest is key. When he opens the chest he gets his reward. In a succubus's mind it's the social aspect is key so she gets a reward getting the quest, a minor reward opening the chest and then a large reward delivering the item back to the NPC.

It doesnt take much effort tbh

Exploration of Skyrim's Legendary difficulty. More comedic than informative I think, but it did make me laugh more than once.

Pretty causal stuff but I still got some enjoyment of it so maybe you will too.

Just wanna let you guys know that at least one guy is watching most of the videos you post. So feel free to post more and I also have one to share.

I remember watching a video detailing how they did the OG pokemon sounds but I can't find it.
This video is more detailed though so it is honistly better then the one I watched before.

Might as well be a list of cool games to get around to playing for edgy lads like myself.

Grim Beard: https://www.youtube.com/user/GrimbeardDiaries/videos

This guy is alright. He reviews some pretty obscure games, mostly those in the point & click/adventure game genre. He's actually made me aware of some OK games that I otherwise might not have played. Scratches, Alpha Polaris, Morningstar & Stasis being a few quick examples (I'm still working my way through what he's showcased, but I have to be in the right mood for it). His whole editing style/persona is pretty hit & miss, what with being some depressed psychotic crab, or whatever, but the content/substance of what he has to say is usually quite good. I don't like that he's becoming more popular and I wish him extreme unsuccess as far as that's concerned, as petty as it may sound.

RagnarRox: https://www.youtube.com/user/RagnarRoxShow/videos

Another decent channel. I haven't watched much of his newer videos yet, but his older ones are quite good. His "Forgotten Gems" videos are quite interesting & "Monsters of the Week" is fun for what it is. I like his Silent Hill videos the most, especially the one comparing SH2 to Solaris. I've watched his Jacob's Ladder video many times as well.

Mandaloregaming: https://www.youtube.com/user/MandaloreGaming

I'm sure most here have heard of this guy, but I'll post about him anyway I guess. I actually tend to find people like this fatiguing, what with their constant need to be funny & stupid via their editing, but I'll admit he has some interesting videos. I just find his voice to be a bit annoyingly deadpan and smug. Also, maybe it's just me, but I find his style/humor panders to message board culture, albeit in a subtle way, and it just rubs me wrong personally.

Fungo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVNuEToTaZA

Not much to say about this guy, but his SH2 playthrough with Guy Cihi (the voice of James) was interesting.

Dead Rising analysis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkifvKOjs-Q

Just as a bonus I found this random dude's political critique/analysis of Dead Rising 1 to be somewhat interesting, albeit long-winded.

I can't watch other people for long, frankly. Whenever I hear someone speak, whatever it is about, I tend to just get angry. People are so fucking stupid and I can't stand listening to their asinine opinions, even if I agree with them. Eventually I just start imagining me stomping in their face with steel toed hiking boots just so they'll shut the fuck up already. Their shallow humor, their grating voices, their worthless fucking hides. "Look at me and all the bullshit I have to say about nothing. Blah, blah, blah. We're all having fun aren't we?" Well, I'm not, you fucking cocksuckers. I hope you all suffer & rot. Nobody deserves to have a good time and if I could enforce unending misery on all of you YouTube talking head scum fucks I would. Even moreso on all the morons who fawn & laugh over these pituary retards (like Mandalore & all the rest of the same ilk). People who treat channels like Super Best Friends or Red Letter Media as their personal "friendship simulators". That's so laughably pitiful it makes me want to projectile vomit for days on end. Pathetic scummy swamp of a planet. My misanthropy knows no bounds and is just getting worse with age. What I wouldn't give to take off in a shuttle craft from my backyard and nuke it all from orbit before leaving for somewhere else. It's the only way to be sure, after all.

Really liked Grim Beard's Fallout and X Files review, thanks for linking this channel.

On another note, that Ragnar guy calls Parasite Eve, a literal best seller game in a best seller franchise for a best seller console produced by none other than that tiny, unknown studio called Square, a "hidden gem". PE is as "hidden" as Resident Evil is. The term has been rendered completely useless at this point. Might as well start calling any game a hidden gem now.

Anyway, here's my pick for the thread. If you're into obscure games and shitty games, this channel is definitely for you:

It's funny you mention Super Best Friends. The channel died recently because of behind the scenes drama. Amazing how groids can make problems out of something as simple as recording yourself playing video games and uploading it.

I know PE sold well for its time, but did the sequel and 3rd Birthday do as well as it did?

Not sure about the figures. You can look those up but both PE and PE2 were massively popular, it's absurd calling those games hidden by any stretch of imagination. The term hidden gem went from defining an underrated, less known title to defining every game some guy found about it last week that's not Minecraft, Mario or Fortnite. I'm guessing it's just something people will write on the title of a video or article to get more clicks.

I can't wait for dmc5 to come out Friday. Mainly because high level play is very captivating to watch compared to me bumbling around barely being able to maintain an A rank.

That was a good video, wish Ross uploaded more often

I like stratetg games, and AOE 2 still has a fanbase after 10 years.

Number one on the list is yet another reason why I am glad I use amazon less and less these days.

Video about how shit it is to work QA.

Video explaining in detail why lootbox regulation is retarded and will be a massive bane to the whole gaming industry since it in effect gives the government control over the industry in far reaching and detrimental ways.

Why are there so many videos with furries using their fursona to narrate nowadays?

probably because the popular politics youtubers started a trend where they use a cartoon avatar in their videos, less popular youtubers probably copied the guys who were already doing this sort of shit in mass, furries.

Cartoon avatars have always been common, also you would be surprised at how prevalent furies are as far as content creators.

How to git gud

Path of Exile is a free to play top-down action RPG.

Tool-Assisted Superplay (TAS) is when the inputs are programmed to push the gameplay to its limits.

HL2's Combine soldier chatter, transcribed and explained. I find it oddly calming, honestly.

Destroy All Humans Remake vs Original Early Graphics Comparison

Pretty cool.

101 player mario kart race.

I like to play games and watch them on youtube. I prefer to find new games on https://toomkygames.com/download-free-games/ for free. Now I play Russian Extreme game

It's so [can't even find a word]…

You don't need source code to reverse engineer a game but it does make the job easier…

StarCraft Cartoon Mods

rip angry sun's soul

I didn't know a publisher could hire goons to intimidate people they don't like IRL.

I really hate when a game I loved for 20 years get –animatized–.

Headcrab killing spree.

I love these HL2 analysis/breakdown videos

The game is still hiding an incredible amount of depth that just goes overlooked

hl1 has a lot of nice details as well, maybe more than hl2

Game is so boring, attention to details is nice but pointless if you drop the game after a couple hours (rockstar is guilty of the same thing)

an interview with julian lefay, father of the elder scrolls. interesting discussion that focuses on programming, gamedev, and how the elder scrolls series have diverged from their earlier roots. the channel has other videos that may be of interest as well, if you like this one (or even if you dont).

thief vs. aaa. modern gamedev principles critiqued. a shorter video (~30 mins).

The adventures of Gordon Fastcrab.

Astral Chain by Platinum Games

More stuff about Oblivion.

good video

The surprisingly interesting story of Flappy Bird

Very cool video about what a second person perspective in video games is like.

I fine the contrast between east and west approaches to the same concept.
In the Japanese game where you become a tentacle monster it is a rpgmaker h-game with vn style tentacle rape scenes and primitive gameplay that was clearly a afterthought.
Meanwhile the western game that is about being a tentacle monster is a metrovania that is purely violence and gameplay no writing.

Too funny not to post.

I found this one quite interesting. The same guy made a video about the history behind Doom cheats that is cool, too.

Just a bit of a gush about indie pixel art.

Dude uses video game exp for job references with hilarious results.

Metal Gear in a sentence…

Mortal Kombat 11 animations

Glad this trash is failing

I am indiffrent about it for the most part, but they made so many mistakes and it would have set many bad trends if it actually got popular somehow. Thankfully the market fixed it before any of the new negative trends it wanted to start got going.

Might get this

14 Abandoned Video Games YOU CAN'T PLAY ANYMORE!

History of EA and why they suck

Really cool trailer, even though I have no interest in the game.

Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike's MAKOTO

didnt know liu kang's fatality in mk1 gave the character more depth than any of the new games

Anti-War War Games

Granblue Fantasy Versus References Volume 2

This guy works for a game dev studio and reviews/analyses gameplay mechanics in his videos. This is his most recent

Raycevik is a good watch, he covers a wide range of games and is obviously researched in his approach.

>canceled account
kek, what was it?

still love the Mass Effect trilogy, warts and all

doom monster tier list

Whenever I think of reddit I think of this guys face. He's awful.

wish that was me

Character Selection Scene

shenmue and japan real life comparison

The basics/fundamentals of VS fighting games

What made USA and Europe skip Street Fighter Alpha3

Bungie vs 343 comparison

Relating specifically to gameplay and game mechanis I like shounic's videos when he dives into TF2 mechanics to explain why things work the way they do, sometimes even inside the code.

Just want to add that for Accursed farms I highly recommend the Deus Ex review. It's great.

I am not clicking unlabled links.
Ether use the embed function like a normal person or describe what you are linking to otherwise I am just going to hide your post and assume it's you shitposting.

Example of games "journalism" being shit.

incredible. showcases so much of that underbelly of japanese culture

5 Things you need to make an MMO

A realistic take on what you would actually need to have even a small chance of creating a successful/profitable MMO.

I have, coincidentally, been watching videos from this guys channel for the entire past week and I think I hate him. All his videos are just chock-full of opinions and common sense criticism with a general theme of snarky and sardonic nonsense. I would rather see him try to make any reasonable criticisms of his 'big 5' favorite MMOs, which he constantly shills, than watch him pick apart some korean trash for the 100th time.

What are you expecting in response to this post?

Turns out all it takes to ruin something for everyone is one committed asshole to go unchecked.

Anyone play this game back in the day?

What hardcore and could have been fun if it wasn't for the hacker problem and shitty ping issues.

I recommend 16 bit gems to anyone who hasn't seen it yet. I've sworn off of all Youtube except for trailers nowadays, but back when I watched it was great.

Yep. Was it this one that had the lagevator?

lol at sony state

I too want to know what happened to this. I had the Nintendo shop open during the e3 direct on the off chance that they announced that it was available.

Kind of looks like the Pi 4 runs most N64 games at a stable framerate with the exception of Conker's Bad Fur Day which is a Rare game anyway. Nintendo could use the chips in the Pi 4 as a basis for an N64 Classic.

There are many great non-rare titles. Enough to include at least 20 games. I think the real reason this product hasn't materialized is Nintendo has realized they can charge $60 for limited-time-only HD ports.

also nintendo knows precisely how the n64 works and could write a better emulator than those that currently exist

what kind of a person is going to watch a 20 minute video of some dude talking about which game system is more popular?

Someone that is interested in the topic.

I actually started watching it but realized it was a nintendo channel, so I assume it's a bit biased. The wiiU was pretty much a failure and the wii store is not even online anymore. With the switch and switch lite out I don't see a reason why the wiiU would be beating a brand new console. I would be less skeptical about the switch selling more than the ps5 but the wiiU? Sounds like classic console wars crap.

>wii store is not even online anymore
You can still download purchaced software, so it is online.

Nindy have had pretty horrible support for all network services, starting with the Famicom Network System, which lasted whole three years. Satellaview for SFC was in service for five years.

So in that sense the Wii Store lasted fairly long.

Historically, the support have been completely different in Japan, where Nintendo repaired FDS's for free for 20 years after it's first release.

neat but I wouldn't pay $40 for it

the $130 version is sold out

people have more money than sense

When playing REMY in 3rd Strike, do not choose Super Art III: Blue Nocturne.

Roll cancel; probably an unintended bug that has gameplay effects.

A video going over how bullshit all the lazy media attacks and political attacks on gamers is including reviewing research on the subject.

Why arcades still are a thing in Japan but failed in the US.

It is a gen-x elitists favorite, or so I hear

heroes of the storm is not dead, he really tried to make it seem like a big deal with that video, the thing is the game is just not competitive and never was, it's a casual game, the forced ranked/competitive modes died, but the game is very much alive and people play it for fun as is was clearly designed to be played. It is like the team fortress 2 of moba games

Me on the 2008.

I would've actually had respect for Mass Effect's narrative if the indoctrination thing were canon. That would've made the strawberry flavor of playstyle all the more badass. I don't get why it's not. It fits with the lore perfectly. That's the entire reason as to why the spectre of the first game went insane.

which one you talking about? i played the first one recently, and that's it so far, but i dont get what you're talking about.

Throughout the series, they constantly push this idea that Reapers slowly indoctrinate anyone in contact with them. Some become babbling lunatics while others, like Saren, are still given a large degree of autonomy because they can better aid the Reapers that way. From what I recall, they never formally explain why Shepard is immune. That largely caused fans to speculate about the trippy endings of the third game and ironically begin to believe that the Renegade ending was the true one because it's the only ending where the Reapers are annihilated, while the other two are about coexisting with the Reapers.
Of course, it was fans just seeing more to the story than there truly was. It wouldn't necessarily have been a shocking twist, but it certainly would've added a lot to the plot that Shepard was being controlled and progressively hallucinating more and more that he/she was successfully saving the galaxy (while actually accomplishing the direct opposite and doing exactly what the Reapers wanted him/her to do).
The endings kinda suck without utilizing that important plot point, but I guess it's less of a letdown if you treat the entire third game as the climax to the series. They tried to append the disappointment with a shittier slideshow than what you'd find on Fallout (which I think are quite good because they vary wildly and thoroughly explore what happens to all the different factions after the game is completed, which is not how it went with Mass Effect 3's newer endings).

I don't know, I just think it would've been poetic that Shepard fights so strongly against the same threat that Saren succumbed to, then potentially also succumbs to that same force. I think it would make a lot of sense, considering that the impetus for Shepard's rise into the Spectres was largely in response to Saren's treasonous actions. Time is a flat circle and all that.

maybe it's those artifact things he interacted with in the first. saren also interacted with them and they both are able to interact with reapers somewhat

need to play more but im still butthurt about mass effect 2 being a lame cover shooter instead fo the wacky rpg shooter like the first

More of a meta-philosophical look at why we play games and what it means.

more like a "let's play" than an analysis, but he's a down to earth youtuber who doesn't post his mug, advertise products, or uses stock footage. He plays some weeb shit though, but makes up for it in some of the original horror titles he plays. He'll also go to the trouble to find the alternate or hidden endings.

>weeb shit
You need to be a male, a virgin, and over 10 years old to post on /games/

Just judging by the thumbnail alone it looks like shit.

Detailed Necromancy lore of the Elder Scrolls games.

Made for good listening. Video is meh visually though.
