>buy $80 NZ PC from a pawn shop that was made in the late 00s
>Buy a PS4 with controllers and games for $250 NZ from an old flatmate
>Get a gorrilion games on the playstation plus subscription to the point where I'm enjoying a decent $40 title once a month
>Pirate old games on emulator on my piece of shit linux machine

Can anyone tell me why you need to bother with proper PC gaming? Between these two cheap options, I have 80% of gaming covered. I look at what's required to get a better computer and it's literally either wasting $500-700 on a 7 year out of date lurkan machine being peddled by electronics stores, or it's going full force and wasting $2000+ on parts like GPUs, new CPUs, etc. You can't really get a good GPU for less than $400 at the moment, that's more than I spent on my current set up. People just seem unwilling to sell old gaming computers like they do old consoles.

I keep on being told online that I'm just a fucking idiot and that I don't get PC gaming, and it's cheaper than console gaming if I actually do it properly. But where are these cheap computers being sold?

You're surviving off a playstation plus subscription that strictly limits you and tells you what to play. If you're not a programmed cuckold 'You will own nothing and be happy' type of person (as you seem to be), then consoles generally mean actually paying for expensive games. Old jailbroken consoles can work but the libraries of consoles are still weak.

Additionally, you probably have no comprehension of how much nicer it is to play a game on a large, high resolution monitor at a high framerate. As a wizard, the PC is my main tool of life, so having a nice one significantly enhances my daily non-gaming activities too. Your $80 PC is for browsing i suppose, but you dont include what you paid for peripherals, monitor etc. At that price, are you writing these messages on a 300x300 screen?

>If you're not a programmed cuckold 'You will own nothing and be happy' type of person

I quite literally finish a game and never play it again for most games I play. Why would I spend $80 NZ on Final Fantasy VIIR or some first person shooter game, when I can just play it during a month on my $13 per month subscription? If I really want something, I'll go to the store and buy the physical media. I'm critical of streaming services, but the Playstation one is the one that makes the most sense and they're generous with the quantity of titles you get. As soon as there's nothing on there I want to play that's new, I'll cancel it.

The peripherals I've had for 13+ years at this point. I don't even remember when I got them, they still work fine.

it's got 100s of games, it's enough to keep someone busy for a long time , I'm currently using it to play through the Yakuza series which is like a ten games alone

can't miss out on something you don't care for
playing at 1080p and i couldnt care less about 4k. my monitor is supposedly 144hz but i wouldnt be able to tell what a damn difference it makes in most games

it's better to be satisfied with less/what you already have than to perpetually worry over upgrading when you can't be arsed staying up to date with the latest tech fads

that just sounds like retarded ignorance, I have more fun playing PC games with a mouse and keyboard, I use my PC all day so it makes sense to spend a lot of money on it, why would I buy something cheap when it's essential to my lifestyle

Nice, nice nekopic. It is fun to emulate old games on an old computer. Thank you for saving a dusty old system from the bin. The gods of obselesense sile upon you!

How much does a ps plus subscription cost? Wouldn't it compound over the years? It's still probably cheaper to get a budget pc and pirate stuff not to mention that a pc can do other things than gaming. Isn't ps4 pretty old hardware anyway? Doesn't sound comparable to a new 2000 dollars pc setup.

not true. you can use old ass gpus when you stick to 1080p. you can play moderng ames with 1660s for like <$120 used

$15 NZ a month which is like $8-9 US a month. But I don't really see myself having it in a year's time as I'd have basically played everything I want by then. You basically only keep it to play a release you want, it's probably cheaper than buying off steam in all honesty. Pirating I still do but mostly for older releases, typically abandonware like Rise of Nations : Rise of Legends.

Hum, didn't know this. I'll keep on shopping around.

don't know where to post this… has anyone used a ps5 controller? how do they compare to ps4 ones?

 No.60487

Just get a Xbox Series X and game pass, honestly that's all you need to play games for cheap for like 5 years.

If you go all out for a PC you will play the exact same games but spend much more money doing so.

They are alright. I use them all the time now, but I think I still like the older design more. Dualsense feels a bit more weighty than dualshocks.

The technological gap between PC and consoles has closed enough that for the average person the cost-benefit analysis favors getting a console. The PS5 has a graphics card that is more or less the equivalent of an RTX 2070. On the PS5's release, the RTX 2070 alone was just as expensive as an entire PS5.
The days when getting even a budget gaming PC marginally more expensive than a console guaranteed you significantly better graphics and performance are over. You can even play console games at 4k or 60fps these days (on some games both).
Same goes for PC exclusives; these days it's the other way around. All the cool exclusives are on console, the only exclusive to PC is indie shit you can play on your mom's laptop (with some exceptions).

I don't even own a console, but it's easy to see the appeal. The only reason to get a gaming PC is if you're some turbo autist that wants to play the latest games at 144fps in 4k with everything on ultra settings, and you're willing to pay a premium for it.

 No.60523

>>60504
Uh, what cool exclusives? Microsoft legitimately has none and Sony is just gay shit movie games.

 No.60781

I bought a $1000 mid-range PC in 2011 (usd), and I upgraded the graphics card in 2014 for $200 and 2017 for $400. I can still play all the latest games. I haven't run into one that I can't. Currently playing Armored Core 4. It also handled 99% of the VR games I've thrown at it, the one exception being Phasmophobia since it's made by an amateur indie dev. $1000 with another $800 in upgrades/replacements is still a big number, but I've got 12 years out of it so far and it's still going. CPUs really haven't come all that far in recent years.

The controls are completely different. Mouse especially compared to joystick is a big difference because you can pan much faster and more controllably. You have many more buttons which can be mapped to stuff on PC. Graphics aren't everything.

High frame rate monitors aren't a meme.
you can't see more than 60fps but you can feel it. It moves so smooth that its like it's 3D. like you can reach inside the screen.
gaming keyboards on the other hand are a meme and are for aesthetics only.

My $200 PC is a refurbished Windows 10 office PC and the internal graphics is enough to play any PS2/PS3-era game on high settings. That's all I want, as I see few modern games that are worth playing, on PC or console.

you realise that sensation of smoothness you experience at high frames is just a trick of the mind. The human eye is better at sensing motion than frames.
Anyone can experience smooth fps at their monitors refresh rate. So a locked 60 fps is enough for a lot of people.
The issue with gamin now, is if you go for a bigger hd screen with higher refresh, you need a better pc.

There are some genres that benefit from a gamepad over KBM, but usually those games are multi-plats where even the PC version will instantly recognise your Xbox or PS controller when you plug one in, complete with the appropriate button icons. That being said I completely agree with your comments on mouse aim, I don't understand how I played FPS or TPS games with a controller back in the day.

>>61047

Personally it feels like motion is smoother going from 60 to 90, but obviously it's not as big a jump going from 30 to 60. I can't notice a difference going beyond 90, but unfortunately most displays jump from 60 to 120.

 No.62443

>>62442
imo playing under 60 is totally unacceptable for modern games, though it depends, You want a minimum of 60 fps for fast pace action games like fps. It has a noticeable difference when the fps drops below 60 in shooters, as in it becomes increasingly impossible to shoot multiple enemies quickly.
For slower games its really not as important but can still be visual unpleasing in a slower paced game with good graphics.

High fps over 60 has diminishing returns and is really only a requirement to match the refresh rate to stop tearing.

>Can anyone tell me why you need to bother with proper PC gaming?
Mods, fangames, better performance (if you can afford it), and free online. You can pirate everything you'd want to play on the various online and streaming services the consoles offer. Games you'd want to keep forever are dirt cheap if you can wait a few months, assuming you even buy them in the first place, as you can just back up the pirated ones. That first bit is slightly less relevant since everyone has big Steam-like sales now, though. The only real downside to a "proper" gaming PC is the upfront cost. Also,
>Buy a PS4 with controllers and games for $250 NZ from an old flatmate
You got pretty lucky there, I'd probably just stick with that if I didn't already have a PC too. Game stores charge way more for newish consoles like that, even for one a generation behind, so most people are gonna be shelling out for what you have. I look at it like buying a nice car, any clunker can get you to work or the grocery store, but you pay for it in gas and parts you have to replace more often.

It feels more responsive to mouse movements.
After playing a shooter game in 120fps and then going back to 60 it feels like something drags your mouse and so you put more effort to look around.
You won't understand until you try.

no. Your eyes can only see 13 fps. Your eyes detect motion you dumbass. The "feel" is an illusion in your brain. You aren't seeing 200 fps you moron. It's a placebo basically tickling your tiny unevolved brain

What is this garbage? We can see only 13fps? There are people who can be shows 30 words per minute flashing in front of their eyes one by one who can memorize and recite them. And studies have found that the answer is between 7 and 13 Hz. After that, our sensitivity to movement drops significantly. “When you want to do visual search, or multiple visual tracking or just interpret motion direction, your brain will take only 13 images out of a second of continuous flow, so you will average the other images that are in between into one image.”

Discovered by researcher Rufin vanRullen in 2010, this literally happens in our brains: you can see a steady 13 Hz pulse of activity in an EEG, and it’s further supported by the observation that we can also experience the ‘wagon wheel effect’ you get when you photograph footage of a spinning spoked object. Played back, footage can appear to show the object rotating in the opposite direction. “The brain does the same thing,” says Chopin. “You can see this without a camera. Given all the studies, we’re seeing no difference between 20hz and above. Let’s go to 24hz, which is movie industry standard. But I don’t see any point going above that.”
