I sometimes watch an anime or read a manga about MMO video games of some sort and it has made me interested in the concept. Obviously as NEETs we should have advantages that other players wouldn't have that come from being able to spend a lot of time playing. I've never really played any multiplayer games, and when I did, I never interacted with anyone in them, just playing them like single player games. I wonder if MMOs could be a decent substitute for actual human interaction and companionship. Does anyone have any experience with these? What do you think about them? Worth playing for a wizard?

I've spent most of my teenage years playing Ultima Online back in the day. The fondest memories I have from video games mostly come from UO. I say give it a shot. I don't know what game people are playing nowadays though, I'm sure somebody here will know more about it.

Play LOTRO
Be wizzard

I think an experience closer to what you see in anime would be the .hack games
these games are jrpgs in which you play a fictional MMORPG, obviously it's not as authentic as playing an actual online game but it removes the social aspect of the games

As someone who spent a large portion of my late teens and early 20s playing them I can tell you from experience that it ain't worth it and is a huge waste of time.

Unlike other games the moment to moment game play of mmo aren't even fun. You are basically just doing a shit job for no pay for the promise that it will eventually be fun later. But the fun never comes.

You will have a much better time playing a bunch of other games rather than burning your time on a mmo being addicted but not having fun and not even having good memories at the end of it.

anything that ensnares your focus away from life is good

I disagree.
The thing ensnaring you should be more enjoyable than the life it's pulling you away from.

Pain can pull someone away from life, but I wouldn't say such a thing is better.
But a actually enjoyable fantasy experience isn't just better, it's enriching and more likely to lead to a state of self-actualization.

i lump pain into the definition of life
and so it is that drinking ensnares focus from pain, even if not enjoyable

I have MMORPG Stockholm Syndrome and it's my favorite genre. The games themselves generally are not very fun but something about the vast worlds are deeply appealing to me. The mechanics can be fun to learn, too. That being said, they are like an endless treadmill if you don't care about the world and solely seek fun gameplay.

OP I'd say give one a shot. For you I would recommend you stay away from any live official servers and play on private servers as generally they are free from MTX crap. Maybe give Turtle WoW a shot as vanilla WoW is easily the most accessible but not watered-down MMORPGs you can play. Project 1999 EverQuest is a major timesink that is focused around group play and communication, so if you are up to the socialization aspect this could be a good one. The Lord of the Rings Online is not a bad MMORPG but is deeply watered down from what it used to be. It has one of the best game worlds though and has a lot of interesting, if dated systems. There are a lot of interesting games to look into and I could list a lot more, but I will cut it short and say you should at least try one.

And while not necessarily MMORPGs, there are also games like Dungeons & Dragons Online and Guild Wars 1 which I think are more fun gameplay-wise, but there is not much of an open world to explore, and socialization is confined within city hubs and guilds.

yeah it's better than working for goldshekelstein

 No.61443

>>61442
anything is better than working for goldshekelstein. MMORPGs is for people who have a slave mentality and love to trick their brains into thinking that they are working and accomplishing something great, what's more funny is that the userbase is mostly wagies, so after long hours of work, they cope by being in some fantasy scenario doing mindless chores and quests.

you can stop playing any time
you can't just quit wageslaving
therefore mmorpgs>wageslaving when it comes to "work"
the enjoyment you get from playing is worth more than any amount of money you can get from working

Funny you should mention .hack. I just decided I would start watching the TV series. I'm not sure I'm gonna make it though. I'm part way through episode 2 but damn it is shit so far. Feels like the producer took too much acid or something. This might be a good thing to try before I get into an actual mmorpg.
