Dungeon Meshi is pretty good but if you go into it expecting more Frieren you'll be disappointed. Relatedly Laios is also autistic coded but (and I don't get why so many people online say otherwise) Marcille is definitely not.

I read the manga all the way to the last chapter released, I think the initial run was cool, had a kind of serene, surreal, dream like quality to it, like the story was about the journey of life and the meaning that it comes with, the people you met and stuff, now the couple of last chapter become a political thing about mages vs empire, or something, became "grounded", kind of lost the dream like serenity that it had, same time happend to Attack on Titan when they introduced a fucking whole new modern country, it was cool when is it was this mysterious fantasy setting and we know nothing about the world outside the walls.

Avoiding a piece of media because people you hate enjoy it, is nothing adbnormal. I don't watch things popular with blacks and most people I know are the same. What truly makes Frieren special is its emotional depth and nuanced character development. The story emphasizes the fleeting nature of human life compared to Frieren’s long existence, making every encounter and relationship feel precious. Characters, even those who appear briefly, are memorable and well-defined, giving the world a lived-in, authentic feel.

One thing about Frieren that doesn't get mentioned enough is just how red pilled the series is. Not only is it one of those animes where it's a clear case of the longstanding Japanese fascination with Europe (Miyazaki is another example of this), but elves in the series are also an obvious metaphor for Europeans themselves.

Elves (literally "white beings") are a metaphor for Europeans, while demons are the ethnic Other and in particular black and brown immigrants. Early on in the series it is revealed that demons wiped out Frieren's elf village and that the Demon King had led a war of extermination against elves in general. This clearly represents the replacement of Europeans. And whereas Frieren found herself the only elf in Graf Granat's Domain, surrounded by humans who are openly welcoming demons into their city, how many Europeans today feel like strangers in countries their own ancestors built.

Frieren's own story is one of growing out of youthful naivety, to one where she understands the importance of extreme prejudice against demons. As someone with embarassingly progressivist views in my youth, I personally found this extremely relatable. And honestly I would say that Frieren helped me to come to terms with my own racism and understand why racism is important. Multiculturalism is like Graf Granat welcoming demons into his city, only to have them ultimately betray him, plot to destroy the magical barrier (a symbol for barriers to mass migration?), and openly seek the destruction of the city. Without Frieren as a series with its highly relatable autistic elf MC, I don't know if I would have realized this myself. But now when I'm on public transit in my city and I realize I'm the only white person around me (in a region that is supposed to be ethnically British), I remember this episode of Frieren and I understand that we too have welcomed demons into the Northern Lands with open arms.

I find it really interesting how much of the online discourse surrounding demons is "Nonono, Frieren is being racist, nothing can just inherently be bad." And just a LOT of wishful thinking about how Frieren is going to be proven wrong.
However, not once has Frieren been proven wrong in her account on demons in the show. It makes sense from a writing pov: she has been around for centuries following others who've been hunting demons, and ALWAYS sees the samd behavior. With that much timeline backing her up, you'd have one helluva plothole if they tried to write in, "They were just misunderstood/defending themselves!" But online discourse just WANTS the writers to pull a Nadesico plotline so bad. I find it more interesting how much of the audience falls for the demons' tricks, and they aren't in the same universe!

I mean look, I'm not a fan of the show and most modern animes are just crap to me, even if I like the character designs, but with Frieren, she's not just made to look sexy, she's not just made to look kawaii either, she actually makes you use your two bracrabls to try and find a reason why she looks the way that she does and blandness in terms of not being visually poppy is not always a bad thing and in many ways is a good thing if the character is still well designed regardless. Which is to say, it's a good thing (if there's actual subtlety) because the design isn't crude and obnoxious. Eventually the eyes get tired of all the bright colors being overused etc. She's a beautiful character and she's the only reason I have the slightest interest in that anime, is the characters visual designs and animation overall. A lot of modern animes are well drawn even if boring as hell

Although let me be clear, it's not just modern, most anime is boring asl, it's just there have been some insane leaps in quality that mostly happened in the 90s, I don't actually discriminate in time. Koe no Katachi was pretty good and really fucking well drawn.

TL;DR most/all modern anime is crap and the only REAL value of it is the visual art and Frieren is one such example of really great visual character design.

And for me she's the most cool for the fact that she's understated. Doesn't even look beautiful at first glance, but the more you look the more you appreciate. That's rare and almost never seen in anime. Like a succubus who you first thought was meh, but the more you look at her, the more you see something beautiful there. It's a real life phenomena, that's almost never replicated in fiction. Frieren captures it very very well.
