That one bit in the movie was the most relatable moment in film. Absolutely.

I think the point of Ichi's story is that the midget who hires him manufactured most of the memories. the manga is kinda complex to really understand, but its heavily implied Ichi's life was rather meh and normal, and the midget hyped up all minor bad stuff that happened unto huge abuse from bullies.
Ichi is genuinely a sadist but he has a child's mind so he doesnt understand sexuality.

Always wondered how much of the pilot manga was canon. I assume he was in jail prior to the actual series due to how badly he is treated by his coworkers.
