That's a good question.
UI being bland is because it needs to be usable for as wide an audience as possible.
Handful of companies tracking everything is because a platform this big requires massive regulation and control.
Also with so many eyes and ears on the internet, it became a very valuable tool to push agendas and make money, which causes the ragebait phenomenon.

I disagree with exploration being dead. There is still a lot of unique and out of the way content on the internet.

where tho? i mean, there's a ton of small personal websites and shit because anyone can make one these days, but there are no more communities outside of reddit, 4chan, discord and a couple alt-chans that are on their way to death.

I miss old sites like newgrounds, pown.it, even /f/ on 4chan. The content there wasn't high quality, but that somehow made it more relatable. It was made by young people fascinated by the internet and just starting to learn how to create animations and games and stuff, but their ideas were unique and full of soul. Nowadays the new content on the internet seems like it's all made through a small number of templates, just different flavors of the same thing.
