Hiro was somehow making money off of 4chan, but didn't give a fuck about maintaining it. He must've been making money because he was bizarrely refusing to sell it to Notch, a multi-millionare. Yet nobody can really work out how it's making money because Moot himself was on the record saying it basically broke even its entire existence. 4chan almost died a few times due to Moot going broke. If it was breaking even, why not sell it off to a gift-horse who wants to buy it and would offer potentially a million for it? It certainly wasn't a passion project because Hiro was hands-off and didn't seem to give a shit about it.
RapeApe (Head Admin) has a salary of $50,000 per year, which is actually pretty decent for the role. Apparently the administration was being discretely seeded with /pol/tards by RapeApe, and it was /pol/ chuds de-facto running the site. Hiro never checked in. I think Rapeape got the salary and promotion after Moot's time, back then it was run on a volunteer basis. I could be wrong about this part, but I don't remember the admin positions being paid jobs back then. That's another major expense for the website.
Here's my speculation though.
I think Hiro was making a significant amount of money off glowies paying him for access to user data, probably in the form of making a glowie an admin and then running a script trawling that information off elsewhere. The reason I think this is because…

If there's basically no far right extremists to root out, and you have to dedicate time and money to it, what better way to burn through a million or two than to bribe the admin for a backdoor? I’ve been on the site since 2007. It’s was a good ride, and I learned a lot on it, ranging from tech to culture, to everything in between. It was a very good source of information and news, if properly filtered.
I met some people there, truly good people.
There was the bad parts of course, the huge amount of porn (not bad per se), and in the later years all the Troon stuff which was becoming honestly unbearable.
Even /pol/ could be very fun sometimes, and had one or two good generals (again, if properly filtered), mostly pertaining to recurring current events/wars.
I felt a huge blow to the quality of the site during the orange man’s election, but that was when moot also sold everything, so it might be totally related.
Lately, a lot of boards were crawling and the amount of people was noticeable lower.
I’ll miss /int/, /his/, /vr/, /mu/, /out/, /diy/, etc.
I’ll also dearly miss the usual suspects that I talked with, they were the best, true friends.
I guess the “you’re here forever” doesn’t ring as hard anymore. Good riddance, and let’s see what happens next!

Thinking about other imageboards now that 4chan is dead and I remembered something that happened a long time ago regarding 7chan. It was fucking gay at the time but in hindsight it's pretty funny. I think this might have been in 2007 or so. Anyway, someone found out that if you went to one of those porn image websites, I think it might have been ImageFap, and searched for "lolita" it would give you a search result screen that said you were searching for illegal content and that your IP address had been sent to the FBI or something. So of course there were a bunch of posts on 4chan getting people to try searching for that. Anyway, I guess one of the people in charge of 7chan got hit by it, so they set 7chan so that anytime anyone went there, it would run a background query to ImageFap for "lolita" with the user's IP address, lol. Not really related to the thread but I thought someone might find this amusing or possibly remember it.
