Violence is a weapon of the institutions that govern this theater. It is just that, theater, play-pretend of animals based on a commonly agreed upon fairy tale that people conform to. If you don't follow the script, you'll get punished.
Petty threats to people or their property is answered by police, military, or just bystanders trying to score points by acting in accordance to the script.
The threat of violence is always there, ever present and it affects the likes of us more than the average person.

It gives their abuse legitimacy, grounds for further and more brazen abuses and violations of this fantasy aggro wizard.

People might have had to be polite to us then due to social norms that were enforced by proximity, but that is no longer the case. We are on of 8 billion in the new globally connected world. You are replaceable not only to your boss, but to your social contacts and family as well.
