No.320417
Looking through my hard drive and seeing files I save years back when I am at a very different spot and have different thoughts trigger a weird nostalgia in me. Nostalgia is probably not the right word. It's like a sadness adjacent feeling that you only get when you're suddenly aware of the passage of time. I just thought it's interesting how as someone with no societal interaction or life experiences computer files has taken the role of photos and memorabilia for me. I have comfy anime pictures, editing software I thought I'd use but was too lazy to learn, screencaps of imageboard posts I thought were deep then but is idiotic to me now. I don't know it's just a really weird feeling where you're sad but not really.

Thinking of getting water proof shoes because the heavy rains have started up again.
Pros are they can handle the rain like a champ.
Cons are they could make my feet ultra sweaty and stinky.
They aren't particularly expensive. It's more of if wearing them is more uncomfortable then having to do a whole shift with wet feet/socks. Which is hard to tell without actually buying them and wearing them.
Anyone have exp with water proof shoes?

I *still* wear them now and then as they got worn and stretched around my feets to the point that anything else I find uncomfortable. I have 2 pairs of these of 4 purchased over the same time period, they have been a major net positive in my foot health and comfort as they are waterproof but not as sweaty as equivalents.
Have a quick look at the "Boots theory of socioeconomic unfairness" which is why I bought these specifically.
No.320440
>>320439>Boots theory of socioeconomic unfairnessI see your boots theory and raise you enshittification, where even big brands and pricey products still fall apart as quickly as cheap products now days.
One of the worse examples are cars, which current cars are so hard to repair and maintain that they are almost considered consumable products.
Or literally anything made by Nike. Not only are their shoes now uncomfortable but they fall apart when used for their intended purpose instead of being treated as delicate fashion accessories.
Interesting suggestion on boots btw.
I will bookmark them in case I am in the market for decent work boots.

If you can't afford a home that can accommodate a large freezer, you pay more for "fresh" food and have to buy it more often.
If you then don't have a car, you are limited to transporting what you can carry or what is supported by public transport - meaning lower bulk savings.
If you then have to schedule specific shopping expeditions for food instead of having the option to fold it in to a return commute or other value creating task, you are wasting potential labour hours on survival.
If you then have to recover from the physical exertion, you are consuming more food and resources.
If you then have to pay on demand instead of by standing order for utilities, you pay more for the same service.
If you then can't afford a mortgage down payment, because you're spending more on survival costs, you will pay more in 10 years than a 10 year mortgage, without any real estate at the end of it.
and so on.
Poverty is the default. Work as hard as you like, it doesn't matter if you're in a gridlock of expenses.

>>320440Now this is situationally valid, it's explicit business strategy in a number of industries.
*however* there are still worthwhile 'plant' investments out there - usually well designed ones made of superior materials. The major profiteers know this and that's why they make things harder to repair (John Deere is a good example) - hence the whole Right to Repair thing in Europe which appears to actually be going somewhere.
But by all means, know which minimum viable products are valuable at a given price point - especially when it comes to consumables.

The especially dumb thing is tit tok doesn't really pay out much of anything even for millions of views with tons of engagement. So this slop is mainly just for attention and wanting numbers to go up.
To make proper money on tit tok you need private brand deals and/or to be selling something.
Then again it could be some 3rd worlder where $2 bucks for several million views is somehow a profitable use of their time compared to a real job.

>>320458There's canned fish, you can easily have a serving of canned fish with vegetables and rice. You can do two grocery shops a week, having one fresh meat meal, one preserved meat meal and one canned meat meal.
Cars are expensive and require repairs. My battery will cost $300 to replace, you need a new $100 tyre a year typically, there's other parts that need replacing. You should put aside $1,000 NZD a year for car repairs, registration, WOFs, etc. You might save $10-20 a week on bulk item savings.
Mortgages are always more expensive than renting in the short term. If you invest the difference between mortgage and rent on the stock market, it comes to about the same as buying a house with a mortgage. And again, there's repairs with homes, and property tax, and insurance.
The advantage of having money is with dealing with problems before they get out of hand, that's where you save money. Getting a filling prevents a dental cap, stopping a leak prevents water damage. Getting your oil done on your car prevents the engine from burning out.
I'm right about boots. A good pair is $300 NZD and a cheap pair is $60 NZD. The cheap pair here lasts like half as long as the good pair. I know this because I go through many pairs of boots, you burn through them working demolition.

>>320518NZ has rents *lower* than mortgages?
Well congrats, you're the minority.
default in EU/UK is anything up to 50% less on a 15 year term mortgage with a 2 year fixed rate for the same grade of property (trust me bro, i've been working to break into landlording for the last year). Even factor in repair costs you come out ahead on mortgages - and can then do your suggested stock market idea.
Public transport - in most of my experience so far - work out more expensive than private car ownership. This is a big reason why big cities are having to artificially hinder car ownership since they cannot or will not reduce rail fares.
Boots in your case are a consumable then - clearly. Work boots in the context of, say, warehouse work would select in favour of quality, especially if there's an orthopaedic advantage. But fair enough - if you've got a consumption profile that genuinely doesn't benefit from a premium material/design, that's legitimate.
As for canned fish, that's highly geo dependent. The same weight of meat for the same fish can vary wildly depending how close to a shore you are. Having the option to exploit whatever is the optimal for the local economy is the relevant wealth advantage.
